fix(highlight): paint quoted stopwords and stopword proximity members - #235
javascript "OR" (and Java "OR") returned the right chunks, but every chunk matching only on the quoted "or" was flagged "match not shown here".
{10}javascript "OR" found the right chunks but never painted the "or" inside the window, and once it did, it painted it in the same colour as "javascript".
Cause
The highlighter and the search disagreed about a quoted stopword.
Uppercase "OR" was folded into the loose terms and read as the boolean operator; lowercase "or" was stripped as a stopword. Only an all-stopword query kept it.
A {N} or NEAR group's stopword member never reached the term set, so the painter never considered it. The unquoted {10}javascript or had the same gap.
Change
A quoted stopword stays in place in the loose query as a marked stem, so NOT, minus and field groups still scope it, and it paints as a one word phrase.
A group's stopword member is recorded on the spec (group_stopwords) and painted only inside a qualifying window, in its own colour slot.
text_has_any_match counts a group stopword only inside a window, so scrollbar markers, n/b stops, table cells and the evidence check agree with the paint.
Operator looking words in a group (OR, AND, NOT) are lowercased when collected, so they are no longer read as operators.
In context stopword pairs are built from the free part of the query only. A group stopword never pairs, and a free stopword keeps its connector.
A negation glued to a parenthesis ((NOT x), NOT(x), (-x)) is now read as a negation, as the search reads it, so the negated word no longer paints. DO-NOT and regex literals are left alone.
Queries without a proximity group or a glued negation are unchanged (28 queries diffed against main: phrases, colour order and painted output).
Visible effects
In group only queries such as {5}defence in depth, "in" now has its own colour and later terms shift one slot. An "in" outside the window no longer paints.
Not changed
javascript NEAR/10 "OR": NEAR does not accept a quoted operand, so it parses as a plain OR. Parser change, separate.
An unquoted stopword beside a quote (javascript "browser" the) is searched but not painted.
java NOT "wallet" loss: a quoted non-stopword single word is re-added to the term list with no negation scope, so wallet paints and loss does not. Existing behaviour; fixing it reorders every query with a quoted single word, so it needs its own change.
In a PDF or txt chunk, a {N} window that straddles a line break paints the stopword's line but does not make it an n/b stop (the scans ask one line at a time).
Tests
New cases in tests/test_stopword_highlight.py: quoted stopwords (upper, lower, punctuation), negated and field scoped forms, group members inside and outside the window, colour distinctness, no adjacency phrase, and free versus group stopwords. Each failed before its fix.
tests/test_every_result_can_show_its_match.py: quoted, negated, field scoped and all-stopword group queries now run through the real index and the TUI's evidence check.
make batch-close green: ruff, pyright strict, full suite (6606 passed), tmux workflow audit.
A quoted stopword beside a content word (javascript "OR") was searched but never painted: an uppercase OR was read as the operator and a lowercase one was stripped as a stopword, so every chunk matching only on it was flagged "match not shown here".
A quoted stopword now stays in place in the loose query as a marked stem, so NOT, minus and field groups still scope it, and paints as a one word phrase. A {N} or NEAR group's stopword member ("or" in {10}javascript "OR") is recorded on the spec and painted only inside a qualifying window, in its own colour slot. text_has_any_match counts it only inside a window, so markers, n/b stops and the evidence check agree with the paint.
In context stopword pairs are now built from the free part of the query, so a group stopword never pairs and a free stopword keeps its connector. Queries without a proximity group are unchanged.
Not changed: NEAR with a quoted operand still parses as a plain OR, an unquoted stopword beside a quote is searched but not painted, and a window straddling a line break in a plain chunk paints the stopword's line without making it an n/b stop.
The query parser now preserves quoted single-word stopwords as phrase stems and tracks proximity-group stopwords separately. The renderer recognises and highlights proximity-group stopwords inside qualifying windows. Tests cover quoted, negated, scoped, and proximity queries, along with highlighted spans.
Changes: Query matching and stopword highlights
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Parse quoted and proximity-group stopwords fnd/matching.py
MatchSpec now stores proximity-group stopwords separately. The parser preserves quoted single-word stopwords, derives stopword/content-word phrases from free terms, and adjusts phrase and term colour slots.
Render and test stopword matches fnd/render.py, tests/test_stopword_highlight.py, tests/test_every_result_can_show_its_match.py
The renderer recognises stopwords inside qualifying proximity windows and adds a coloured full-word highlight when ordinary word highlighting produces no runs. Tests cover query results and highlight behaviour, including line breaks and window limits.
Some searches can highlight a word from a negated clause. Results remain usable, but the displayed match evidence can be misleading.

The title names the main change: quoted stopwords and stopword proximity-group members are now painted by the highlighter. It matches the changeset in fnd/matching.py and fnd/render.py, which add group_stopwords and extend highlight logic. The title is specific and concise, and it follows conventional commit style.

I’m a rabbit with a query to chase, Quoted stopwords now keep their place. Through proximity windows, I hop, A matching word gets its colour on top. I nibble the tests, then bound away.

Keep parenthesised NOT terms out of the positive phrase set.
For java OR (NOT "or"), MatchSpec.from_query sees (NOT as one token. The exact NOT check runs before parentheses are removed, so "or" enters quoted_stopwords. phrase_char_spans can then highlight and count or, although the Boolean query excludes it.

The search negates (NOT x), NOT(x) and (-x), but the highlighter only saw NOT and - as whole tokens, so the negated word still painted. NOT is now split from adjacent parens and a leading paren no longer hides a - prefix.
The glued NOT split matched after any punctuation and rewrote regex literals, so DO-NOT negated the next term and /NOT(a|b)/ lost its highlight. It now splits only at whitespace or parens and skips regex literals, as the search tokeniser does.
