Problem

  • Single-file HTML pages that fill empty containers from inline script data (JS objects, JSON blocks) indexed as almost nothing: the DOM walk sees empty divs.
  • The preview also lost structure for ordinary HTML: callouts, inline code, code languages, list numbering, table cell markup.

Change

  • Static reader (_js_data): reads JS data literals without running them.
    • var/let/const name = …, bare name = … and X.name = …; numbers including decimals, negatives and exponents.
    • An assignment counts only at a real {/[ token, so commented-out code and strings never swallow later data.
    • Shared references resolve under an expansion budget.
  • Evaluator (_js_eval, macOS only): runs the page script in a confined JavaScriptCore child to resolve computed values.
    • sandbox-exec: no network, no fork, no file writes, no reads of user data. No sandbox means no evaluation.
    • Empty environment, CPU limit, wall-clock limit, memory cap (polled), streamed 8 MB output cap, watchdog that outlives a killed parent.
    • Each data literal is kept where it is built (top level, IIFE, window.X); literals inside functions that do not run at load are left alone. The page runs through eval in a try, so a throw part-way keeps what was built.
    • The DOM stub answers getElementById / querySelector('#id') with the page's own <script id=…> islands; storage returns null.
    • Only starts when a script has computed values and prose. FND_HTML_EVAL=0 turns it off. Other platforms keep the static path.
  • Renderer (_script_text): steps, code, output, tables, chips and citations as markdown and index text.
    • Placed at the DOM node whose non-empty id/data-* names the data; a JSON island is placed where it sits (a large one gets sections below its own); the rest under Script text.
    • Per-file budgets: nodes, characters, a 15 s render deadline, one 10 s evaluation budget.
  • Shared walker (_html, also used by EPUB): callouts, inline code, code languages, ordered and nested lists, table cells with inline markup, stage banners, spacing for minified markup, one-pass block detection.

Behaviour to decide

  • Evaluation is on by default where jsc and sandbox-exec exist. Easy to flip to opt-in.
  • SCHEMA_VERSION is not bumped. A file picks this up when its mtime changes or on reindex --rebuild.

Known limits

  • The memory cap is polled every 0.2 s, so a fast allocation can overshoot briefly.
  • A leading-block list item with a nested list renders flat in the preview; a table caption inside an <li> is not indexed.
  • A word split mid-way across two spans inside an <li> gets a space.
  • Data a page builds only inside event handlers or render functions is read statically, not evaluated.
  • Large tables are chunked with empty body_md (existing sectioner behaviour).

Testing

  • Five new test files (components, structure, text, eval, bounds). Regression tests carry negative controls: each fails on the code before its fix.
  • make batch-close green: full suite, 12 tmux scenarios (1 skipped), ruff and pyright clean.
  • Checked against 13 real single-file pages: every readable script string present in the output, no raw HTML or entities leaked, every load-time computed literal evaluated.
  • Walker compared with main over hundreds of ordinary HTML files and fuzzed pages: no visible-text loss apart from the limits above.

Single-file HTML pages that fill empty containers from inline script data indexed as almost nothing. Their data is now read, rendered and placed where the page shows it.

- Read JS data literals without running them (_js_data); shared references are resolved under an expansion budget.
- On macOS, evaluate computed values in a confined JavaScriptCore child (_js_eval): sandbox-exec (no network, fork or writes, no reads of user data), empty environment, CPU, wall-clock, memory and streamed output caps. Without the sandbox nothing runs. FND_HTML_EVAL=0 turns it off.
- Render steps, code, output, tables, chips and citations as markdown and index text (_script_text), with per-file node, character and time budgets.
- Shared walker (also used by EPUB): callouts, inline code, code languages, ordered and nested lists, table cells with inline markup, stage banners, spacing for minified markup, linear block detection.

Findings

Minor An empty id/data- value claims the loose-prose blocks.
Minor This test does not start the evaluator, so it does not test the per-file budget.
Minor The module docstring promises bare name = {...} assignments, but ASSIGN does not match them.

Walkthrough

The web extractor now parses inline script data, renders readable content from static and eligible computed values, and combines those blocks with HTML-derived sections. HTML rendering also handles additional block structures, formatting, and attached script content.

Changes: Inline script extraction

Layer / File(s) Summary
Parse and evaluate script data
fnd/extract/_js_data.py, fnd/extract/_js_eval.py, tests/test_web_script_eval.py, tests/test_web_script_bounds.py, tests/test_external_sinks.py
JavaScript-like assignments and strings are parsed without executing scripts. Eligible unresolved values can be evaluated in a confined process. Tests cover evaluation limits, sandbox restrictions, and parser bounds.
Render script data as content blocks
fnd/extract/_script_text.py, tests/test_web_script_text.py, tests/test_web_script_structure.py, tests/test_web_components.py, tests/test_web_script_bounds.py
Script values are rendered as prose, code, links, tables, and walkthrough views. Tests cover rendered structures, text association, and bounded extraction.
Integrate blocks with HTML extraction
fnd/extract/_html.py, fnd/extract/_sectioner.py, fnd/extract/web.py, tests/test_web_components.py, tests/test_web_script_structure.py
The HTML walker handles richer document structures and attaches script blocks by matching element attributes. Unclaimed blocks are added under a Script text heading.

The change recovers content from script-built pages. The remaining issues are small. Loose script prose can appear under the wrong heading on pages with empty data attributes. One test does not exercise the evaluator time budget it claims to. One docstring overstates which assignments are parsed. The PR is mergeable once these are addressed or accepted.

Explanation

The pull request description is specific and relevant to the changeset. It describes the static JavaScript data reader (_js_data), the macOS-only JavaScriptCore evaluator (_js_eval) with sandbox-exec limits, the script text renderer (_script_text) with placement and budgets, and the shared HTML walker changes in _html that also serve EPUB. It also lists the test files, known limits, and behaviour to decide, which matches the raw summary of changes across the listed files.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 29.22% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 154 functions across 12 files.

A rabbit reads the page with care,
And finds the script’s words hiding there.
It sorts each list and labels code,
Then joins the blocks along the road.
“The text is found,” it thumps with cheer,
And leaves the plain page bright and clear.

…ilt, place islands in place

- Parser: decimals, negatives and exponents are data; an assignment counts only at a real { or [ token, so commented-out code and strings no longer swallow later data; bare NAME = {...} is read.
- Evaluator: each data literal is kept where it is built (top level, IIFE or window.X) and the page runs through eval in a try, so a later render helper or a throw no longer loses the data; the DOM stub answers getElementById and querySelector('#id') with the page's own script islands, and storage returns null.
- JSON islands are placed in the section where they sit; a large one gets sections below it.
- An empty id or data-* value no longer claims script blocks.
- A lead-in dropped by the budget no longer takes an earlier block with it.
