Wave 4 of the R5 review: child processes and the process registry (A6, A7, P25, P26, D3), with one finding of our own (F8) and the tests wave 3 left out for the three interrupt-time clocks. Seven signed commits, each one change.

What changes for a tester

  • A program the application starts under its own debugger (DEBUG_PROCESS, DEBUG_ONLY_THIS_PROCESS) no longer stalls the start for ten seconds, no longer reads the real clock at its start, and is no longer reported uncovered while the hook is in it (R5-P25).
  • A child Windows ended while loading it (a missing library, say) is no longer reported as a process that ran on the real clock with a partial verdict. It never ran (R5-F8).
  • The audit follows 4096 processes in a session instead of 256 (R5-P26). Slots are still never reused (R2-S9), so the limit is a session's whole history.
  • Start-up refusals say what happened (R5-D3): six more Windows codes named, another version's control block told from a foreign one, codes on every failure, and a look at the hook library when LoadLibraryW returns NULL.
  • A process of the session that cannot be watched is named with the new warning key session.member_unwatchable (R5-D3). It used to count as ended, silently.

Commits

  1. refactor(mech) R5-A6: prepare owns what it holds (ControlView, SuspendedTarget in the new held module), every way out is a plain return. No change in behaviour.
  2. fix(hook) R5-A7 + R5-F8: one reading of a remote load in chrono_ctl::inject, shared by the core and the hook.
  3. fix(hook) R5-P25: a debugged child is followed by a thread of its own in the parent, which resumes the child once the hook is in.
  4. feat(ctl) R5-P26: MAX_COV_PIDS 4096, CTL_LAYOUT_VERSION 12.
  5. fix(mech) R5-D3: messages, the other-version block, the hook library check, session.member_unwatchable.
  6. test R5-F4: the odd-address and session-end probes cover the three interrupt-time clocks.
  7. chore: the length ceiling down to 147 (it had room after describe_warning was split), and wire_keys.rs reads the new gloss function.

Measured

  • P25, a parent that debugs its child, x64 and x86: CreateProcessW 10 002 ms before, 2.5 to 3.7 ms after. The child read the real year in 3 runs out of 4 before, the session's year in 16 out of 16 after. With the new path switched off the 10 s, the real clock and the uncovered child come back.
  • F8, a child whose import is missing, x64 and x86: before partial, exit 10, the child named uncovered. After works, exit 0. With the early return taken out, partial comes back.
  • P26, five alternating pairs per bitness against the build before: time to the first coverage event, the core's CPU over an idle session and its private memory unchanged within the noise. Harness S23 spawns 4200 processes and finds the warning with the new number.
  • D3, A6, F4 tests: every new or extended test was made red by breaking what it guards, and green again on restore.
  • Local gates: clippy, clippy-pin, metrics-pin, format-cs, build-debug, x64 and x86 builds, site, test-rust 1027 passed, test-cs 875 passed. Harness S17, S20, S21, S34 on x64 and x86: 50 of 50 each, S22 and S23 on x64: 10 of 10 (one earlier run had the under-limit control of S23 red once, not reproduced).

Not done here

  • S23 with 4200 processes was run on x64 only.
  • A debugger that asks for its child suspended and resumes it itself can still start it before the hook is in. Said in the changelog.
  • session.member_unwatchable carries no count, like the other session keys.

Review round (e18b8cb)

Three inline comments and four pre-merge warnings, each checked against the code before anything changed.

Taken

  • A debugged child's handles (crates/hook/src/lib.rs, inline, and the first half of "No Resource Leaks"): right. The two duplicates were taken side by side, so when one failed the other stayed open in the application under test, once for every such child. own_handles now takes both or neither. A unit test counts this process's handles over 256 failed pairs: the old form leaves 256 open, the new one none.
  • The probe's numbers in session_end.rs (inline): right that a writer and a reader disagreeing about the layout read as "the probe wrote nothing". measured() now says why it cannot read the file and quotes it. With the tail left out of the writer the test says "12 numbers where 13 belong".
  • Tests For Changed Behavior, P25 and F8: right, both were measured only by probes outside the repository. Two session tests hold them in CI now, and pass locally on x64 and x86:
    • debugged_child.rs: the test binary starts two copies of itself under its own debugger, one per flag, answers their debug events and times the start. Starts of 5-6 ms, both children on the session's moment, works on three processes. With the debugged-child path switched off both starts stand 10 007 ms, and with one flag dropped from DEBUG_FLAGS that flag's child stands 10 007 ms.
    • loader_failure.rs: the application starts a copy of the test binary with an imported library renamed, which its loader ends with 0xC0000135. The session stays works with no uncovered child. Counting such a child again gives one uncovered child and a red test.
  • Clear User-Facing Text, the changelog heading: "A child process that Windows could not start".

Not taken, with the reason

  • session.member_unwatchable as a reason to doubt the evidence file (inline, Major): the warning says the session may have ended while a process still ran, not that the substitution failed while the session ran. It is the same kind of fact as session.left_running (an application on the real clock after its session), which deliberately does not undo a works verdict as evidence, and the banner's own sentence, "the time substitution did not fully take effect", would be false here. The key stays in the report and in the evidence file built from it.
  • Tests For Changed Behavior, the rest: the refusal that makes a member unwatchable is classified by a unit test, and counting it is one line. A test of the count needs a member process that refuses the core, which the test would have to create with a security descriptor of its own - left as a candidate. The 4096-slot registry is exercised by harness scenario S23 (4200 processes, about three minutes per bitness, outside CI).
  • System Changes Are Reversible: the hook stays loaded and its detours stay in place by design (ADR-14). A process that outlives its session is handed back the real wall clock and its duration axes go on at rate 1, measured, and unhooking under the running threads of somebody else's application is the riskier choice. The page a stuck load may still read is left on purpose (R4-N10), because freeing it under LoadLibraryW is a use-after-free in the application under test.
  • No Resource Leaks, the page after a timed-out or failed wait: the old reading freed it only when the thread happened to finish in the microseconds between the timed-out wait and the read of its exit code. The shared reading treats such a wait as "may still be reading", the rule the core has used for its own target since R4-N10. A thread waiting without limit on a wedged loader in somebody else's process, to give back a few hundred bytes, costs more than it saves.
  • Clear User-Facing Text, the refusal clauses: they name the cause in the style of the clauses before them (the file or the path does not exist, access denied, in use, not runnable), and 740 already says what to do. The advice proposed for 216, "use the matching chrono.exe build", would mislead: the core is already picked by the target's bitness, and 216 means the program cannot run on this Windows at all. A foreign control block cannot say who holds it.

After the round: test-rust 1030 passed (1027 plus the three new tests), test-cs 875 passed, harness 229 of 229 on x64 and on x86, clippy, clippy-pin, builds for both bitnesses. The new and changed tests also pass on i686.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Process auditing now supports up to 4,096 processes. Processes beyond that limit receive the session clock but cannot be audited.
    • Session reports now warn when access-denied processes cannot be monitored and may continue running on the real clock.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved launch-refusal messages with clearer details about common causes.
    • Debugger-related child-process waits no longer prevent the caller from servicing debug events.
    • Processes Windows could not start are excluded from real-clock and partial-verdict reports.

prepare released the control block's view and mapping, and the still
suspended target with its two handles, by hand on each of its six ways
out. Every new resource meant a new line on every one of them, and a way
out that missed one left a target suspended for good or a view mapped in
the core.

Two owners in the new held module now do it when they go out of scope:
ControlView (unmap, then close the mapping) and SuspendedTarget (end the
process, close both handles, then drop its job), disarmed by
into_session and into_running once nothing can fail any more. Every way
out of prepare is a plain return. The order of release is the old one.

No change in behaviour. Three tests pin the owners themselves, since the
job ends a refused target on its own and no session test would notice a
lost TerminateProcess: each one fails when its release is taken out.

The core and the hook both load the hook into a process on a remote
thread, and both have to say afterwards whether it loaded, whether the
process ended meanwhile and whether the page holding the path may go.
They did it in two copies. The core read the target's own exit code
first and never took a loader status for a module. The hook did not
look at the process at all and took any non-zero thread code for a
loaded library.

So a child that Windows ended while loading it, a program whose library
is missing say, was taken for one the hook had loaded into, did not sign
in, and the report listed it as a process that ran on the real clock,
with a partial verdict. It never ran an instruction. Measured with a
child whose import is missing, on x64 and x86: before, verdict partial,
exit 10, the child named as uncovered. After, works, exit 0, nothing
named. With the early return taken out again, partial comes back.

The reading lives once now, in chrono_ctl::inject with no Windows types:
STILL_ACTIVE_CODE, one INJECT_TIMEOUT_MS for both sides, the wait and
process states, outcome, page_released_safely, and the tests that were
in mech's loader. The hook splits its injection into starting the remote
load and reading how it ended, and counts the child in one place.

…5-P25)

A child started with DEBUG_PROCESS or DEBUG_ONLY_THIS_PROCESS has the
caller as its debugger. The remote thread that loads the hook is the
first thread to run in it, so it raises the child's first debug events
and stands until the debugger answers them - and the debugger is the
thread that called CreateProcess, waiting in the detour for that remote
thread. Measured on x64 and x86 with a parent that debugs its child:
CreateProcess stood 10 002 ms, the child was resumed before the hook had
loaded and read the real clock (3 runs out of 4), and the report named it
uncovered while the hook loaded a moment later.

For such a child the detour now starts the load and returns at once. A
thread of its own, holding its own handles to the child, waits for the
load, counts the child the way the synchronous path does and only then
resumes it. After: CreateProcess 2.5 to 3.7 ms, the child on the session
clock in 16 runs out of 16 on both bitnesses, exit 0, nothing named
uncovered. With the new path switched off again the 10 s, the real clock
and the uncovered child come back.

Children that are not debugged keep the synchronous wait: one started
with CREATE_SUSPENDED is resumed by its caller right after the call, and
a load waited for elsewhere could lose that race. A debugger that asks
for its child suspended keeps it too, and the changelog says so.

…-P26)

A session's registry of processes never reuses a slot, on purpose: the
slot is the process's evidence and outlives it (S-9, R2-S9). So what
fills it is the session's whole history. An application that starts a
short helper every ten seconds went past 256 in about 43 minutes, and
every process after that ran on the session clock but outside the audit.
4096 takes that to about eleven hours.

The block grows from about 141 KB to 2.3 MB, mapped by every process of
the session and committed only where it is written. Measured on x64 and
x86, five alternating pairs each against the build before: the time to
the first coverage event (405.6 against 386.5 ms on x64, 390.5 against
389.5 ms on x86), the core's CPU over a 9 s idle session and its private
memory did not move past the noise. Harness S23 now spawns 4200
processes and finds the warning, with the new number in the report.

CTL_LAYOUT_VERSION goes to 12, since covs starts later and the block is
larger. The test helper allocates the block zeroed on the heap: built on
the stack it overflowed the test threads. The notes name 4096 on the
command line and in the window, and a mirror test reads the constant out
of the control block's source and fails when a note names another
number.

…atch (R5-D3)

Start-up refusals read as a bare number or as Windows's own sentence in
the system's language. win32_detail now names six more codes: a program
that asks to run as administrator (740), a path or command line too long
(206), a program built for another processor (216), a file antivirus
blocked (225) or removed (226), and a system policy (1260), meanings from
MS Learn. The number stays in every message.

A control block left by another version of the tool was refused as
"held by something that is not this tool", or, when that version's block
was smaller, as "MapViewOfFile returned null" before its header could be
read. The section is mapped whole now and read by its size, magic and
layout, so another version is told apart and the message says to close
the applications it started. MapViewOfFile and VirtualAllocEx carry
their codes, and so do the process snapshot and a failed wait.

When LoadLibraryW returns NULL in the target, the core looks at the hook
library on that path only: a file it cannot open is named with its
reason, a file built for another machine is called a mixed package, and
otherwise the plain message stands.

A process that signed in to the session and would not let the core wait
on it counted as ended, so the session could end under it without a
word. The failed open is now read by its code, and the session verdict
carries session.member_unwatchable, explained on the command line and in
the window in English and Polish. No count on the wire, as for the other
session keys. describe_warning gave its session keys to
describe_session_warning to stay under its length ceiling.

…obes (R5-F4)

Wave 3 put QueryInterruptTime, QueryInterruptTimePrecise and
QueryUnbiasedInterruptTimePrecise on the duration axis, and two probes
that hold every duration detour to its promises did not know them.

hook_integrity reads the three through a buffer at an odd address under
a session, as it reads the rest (R4-N3). session_end samples them beside
the tick count, QUIT and QPC past the end of the session and requires
each to have been scaled during it and none to step back when the
application is let go (ADR-14, untouchable rule 3). Both link the three
from kernelbase, which alone exports them.

Measured by breaking each: a plain store through the pointer in the
interrupt-time detour took the probe down at the first of the three, and
handing back the real value after the session stepped all three back by
139 s. Both tests went red, and green again with the hook restored.

…ew gloss (R5-D3)

describe_warning handed its session.* keys to describe_session_warning
and went from 149 to 144 lines, so the length ceiling stood two above
the longest function, which is cdp_embedded_probe at 147 now
(tools/margin.ps1 -Rust). Down to 147, and the tightened copy to 146.

wire_keys.rs looks for the words of every key on the wire in a fixed
list of report.rs functions, and did not know the new one: it named
session.left_running, session.followed_family and
session.member_unwatchable as printed raw. With the function on the
list the guard is green again.

📝 Walkthrough

The changes update child-process injection and session startup handling. They raise the process registry limit to 4096, report session members that cannot be watched, improve startup diagnostics, and extend clock interception tests to cover six clock axes.

Changes: Process lifecycle and reporting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared injection outcomes and child loading
crates/ctl/src/inject.rs, crates/ctl/src/lib.rs, crates/mech/src/loader.rs, crates/hook/src/lib.rs, CHANGELOG.md
The control crate now defines shared injection outcomes and page-release rules. The hook uses them to load child processes, account for outcomes, and follow up on debugged children using a worker thread when possible.
Session startup ownership and diagnostics
crates/mech/src/held.rs, crates/mech/src/lib.rs, crates/mech/src/tree.rs, CHANGELOG.md
Owning guards manage control mappings and suspended targets during startup. Startup and process-enumeration errors use detailed Win32 messages, including recognized refusal reasons.
Process capacity and session warnings
crates/ctl/src/lib.rs, crates/mech/src/family.rs, crates/mech/src/lib.rs, crates/cli/src/core.rs, crates/cli/src/report.rs, crates/cli/src/cdp_attach.rs, crates/cli/tests/wire_keys.rs, gui/ChronoMock.App/Localization/Strings.*.json, gui/ChronoMock.App.Tests/*, CHANGELOG.md, clippy.toml, .github/clippy-tight/clippy.toml
The process registry limit increases from 256 to 4096, and the control layout version changes to 12. The session counts signed-in members that could not be watched and adds a warning when that count is nonzero. CLI messages, localization, and related tests reflect the updated limit and warning.
Clock interception verification
crates/cli/tests/hook_integrity.rs, crates/cli/tests/session_end.rs
The probes add QueryInterruptTime, QueryInterruptTimePrecise, and QueryUnbiasedInterruptTimePrecise. Session-end checks now measure startup rates and step backs across six axes.

Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior

Explanation

The PR changes substantial non-UI runtime behavior, but it does not add or update tests for several changed paths. crates/hook/src/lib.rs adds the asynchronous DEBUG_PROCESS/DEBUG_ONLY_THIS_PROCESS path (inherit_into_debugged_child, debugged_child_proc, and child resumption), yet its test module is unchanged and no debug-child test was added. crates/mech/src/family.rs changes refresh to count access-denied members, but the new test only checks error classification, not the count or emitted session warning. The 4096-slot runtime behavior also has no changed runtime-capacity test; the new C# test checks only that notes contain the constant. The shared injection outcome behavior is covered by new unit tests, ownership and refusal behavior have tests, and the interrupt-clock tests were strengthened. No test deletion or weakened assertion was found.

Resolution

Add tests for each changed runtime path. Add a Windows integration test for a debugged child that checks prompt process creation, session-clock reads, coverage, and both suspended-flag cases. Add a child loader-failure integration test. Add Family::refresh/Session tests for access-denied counting and session.member_unwatchable. Add a registry-capacity and layout-version compatibility test for the 4096-process change.

Full details: System Changes Are Reversible

Explanation

The PR adds process injection and does not restore all changed state. crates/hook/src/lib.rs:2647-2795 starts LoadLibraryW in child processes, and its timeout or wait-failure path deliberately leaves the remote path allocation in the child. The new debugged-child path starts this work on a worker at lines 2881-2924. Session stop only marks the control block ended and closes handles (crates/mech/src/lib.rs:862-875). The hook watcher changes behavior to real time but does not disable or remove MinHook detours; disable_all_hooks is used only for an installation failure (crates/hook/src/lib.rs:3477-3498, 3908-3921). A pinned hook DLL remains loaded until process termination. Therefore normal stop, core crash, and next-start recovery do not restore the injected module, detours, or timed-out remote allocation. App exit provides only incidental OS cleanup.

Resolution

Add one idempotent teardown path for every injected child. Save the original detour state and remote allocations, then stop and join asynchronous load workers, wait for remote loaders before freeing their pages, disable and remove MinHook detours, and unload the hook module when safe. Invoke this path on normal session stop, target close, core crash, and stale-session recovery at next start. Keep the operation limited to the user-selected process family, expose it through the visible stop flow, and report any restoration failure instead of leaving state active.

Full details: Clear User-Facing Text

Explanation

Startup refusal text is visible on stderr through diag!("chrono core: {detail}") in crates/cli/src/core.rs:235-244, but six new Win32 explanations in crates/mech/src/lib.rs:1845-1850 only state the cause. They do not tell the tester what to do for an overlong path, bitness mismatch, antivirus block/removal, or policy block. The new foreign control-block refusal at 1647-1650 also says only that reuse is refused. The changelog title “A child process Windows could not start” is also unclear; it omits “that”.

Resolution

Add an action to each refusal. For example: “the path or command line is too long - shorten it and try again”; “the program uses a different processor type or Windows version - use the matching chrono.exe build”; “antivirus blocked/removed the file - allow or restore it, then try again”; and “a system policy blocks this program - ask an administrator to allow it, then try again”. For a foreign control block, say how to identify and close the owning process, then retry. Change the changelog heading to “A child process that Windows could not start...”.

Full details: No Resource Leaks

Explanation

The PR can leak native handles and remote memory. In crates/hook/src/lib.rs:2884-2886, if either own_handle call fails, the other successfully duplicated handle is discarded without CloseHandle. Repeated debugged-child creation can accumulate leaked process or thread handles. Also, end_remote_load leaves RemoteLoad.page allocated at lines 2778-2786 for timeout or wait-failure outcomes. The new shared outcome logic broadens this path: the base code could free the page when a terminal thread exit code was readable after such a wait.

Resolution

Handle the two duplicated handles independently and close any successful duplicate when the other duplication fails. For RemoteLoad.page, retain ownership after timeout or wait failure and use a cleanup owner that waits for definitive remote-thread or process completion, then calls VirtualFreeEx and closes the remaining handles. Do not discard the page after closing only the remote-thread handle.

fails after the process handle succeeds, close the process duplicate with
`CloseHandle` before returning. Preserve the existing fallback behavior when
either acquisition fails.

228-228: The new assertions look sound.

The r > 10.0 head-rate check applies to all six axes at x60. The step-back check uses an exact == 0.0 comparison. That is correct because backs stores -w and worst starts at 0.0. The v + 0.0 in named normalizes -0.0. No change needed.

Mark evidence as unreliable when a session member cannot be watched.

If unwatchable_members > 0, the core cannot establish when every signed-in member stopped using the session clock. This warning reaches the report, but crates/cli/src/report.rs::session_is_reliable still accepts a works verdict with this warning. The evidence export can therefore present incomplete family coverage as reliable proof. Add this key to the evidence-reliability check and mirror that decision in the GUI. As per path instructions, “never report WORKS or PARTIAL beyond what was measured inside the process; uncovered channels are listed, not omitted.”

Review comment at @crates/cli/src/core.rs around lines 992 - 994:
Update `session_is_reliable` to treat `KEY_MEMBER_UNWATCHABLE` as making
evidence unreliable, and mirror the same warning check in the GUI reliability
decision so both report paths reject reliability when a session member cannot be
watched.

…uard R5-P25 and R5-F8 in CI

Review round on #109.

The thread that follows a debugged child duplicated the child's process and thread handles side by
side, and when one duplicate failed the other stayed open in the application under test, once for
every such child it started. `own_handles` takes both or neither and closes the first when the second
cannot be had. A unit test counts this process's handles over 256 failed pairs. Revert probe: the old
side-by-side form leaves 256 open.

The debugger fix (R5-P25) and the child its loader ends (R5-F8) were measured only by probes outside
the repository. Two session tests now hold them in CI:

- debugged_child.rs: the test binary starts two copies of itself under its own debugger, one with
DEBUG_ONLY_THIS_PROCESS and one with DEBUG_PROCESS, answers their debug events, and times the start.
Each child writes the wall clock it reads. Measured: starts of 5-6 ms, both children on the session's
moment, works on three processes, on x64 and x86. Revert probes: with the debugged-child path off both
starts stand 10 s, and with one flag dropped from DEBUG_FLAGS that flag's child stands 10 s.
- loader_failure.rs: the application under test starts a copy of the test binary with an imported
library renamed, which its loader ends with 0xC0000135. The session stays works with no uncovered
child. Revert probe: counting such a child again gives one uncovered child.

session_end.rs: the reader of the probe's numbers says why it cannot read them, so a writer and a
reader that disagree about the layout no longer read as a probe that wrote nothing.

CHANGELOG: "A child process that Windows could not start".

…ies, and two tests made to prove what they say

The six R5 waves (donislawdev#103, donislawdev#104, donislawdev#105, donislawdev#109, donislawdev#110, donislawdev#111) added 137 tests whose revert probes were
measured by hand and kept nowhere the weekly run repeats them. Every one of them is named by an
entry now, r5-w1 to r5-w5b, each a mutation of the code its test guards, all caught with
mutate.ps1 -Only wave by wave. Three of the tests are helper processes, ten had entries already.

Two entries found a test that did not prove what it says. A C# test of the calculator's zone line
was red when run alone: it read the strings through an application only another test had started,
and asks through the shared WPF host now. The test of the PE header reader never gave it a header
without the PE signature, so a mutation dropping that check went unseen. It does now.
