The second half of wave 5: the time shim of a Chromium session, and the gate that runs it.

What changes

 • The shim is run in the gate (R5-A10). crates/cli/src/cdp/shim_exec.rs puts the shim and the expressions a session sends, as the Rust code builds them, in a JS scope whose clocks and timers the test drives (shim_harness.js), and runs it with Node: twelve scenarios. The harness reads a delay as a browser does, floors a nested timer at 4 ms past a nesting level of 5 (measured on Electron 44 from the seventh), and makes frames out of realms of their own (node:vm). Node is on the windows-latest image, and a machine without it fails these tests with a message. tests/network.rs lists the spawn with its reason.
 • Frames (R5-P5). A jump, a change of speed, the audit and the release used to reach the page's own document only: every frame of the page kept the clock it started with, and its calls were not counted. They are now handed down to every frame the page's JS reaches, and the audit counts their calls in the page's row and says how many it reached. The core asks a page for its frame tree before each audit (Page.getFrameTree lists the frames in the page's own process), and a page that reached fewer two audits in a row gets chromium.frames_unreached: a frame of another origin of the same site, a sandboxed one, or one that was there before the shim.
 • A frame of another site had no shim at all (R5-F11). It is a target of its own, attached paused before its first document, so the shim's evaluate found no context (Cannot find default execution context) and the injection was taken back - the frame read the real clock and the verdict said partial. With the new-document hook in, such a frame now takes the shim from the hook, and is counted covered only once its audit answers from the shim. Until then a move or a release it cannot take is no miss, and at the end it counts as not covered.
 • Timers (R5-P6). setInterval with a function is a chain of setTimeout, each aimed one step at the rate of now past the last tick: a change of speed takes from the next tick, a tick's lateness is made good at the next, and a tick missed whole is not made up. A delay is rounded, not cut - at x60 a one-second timer ran 4% fast. Under the 4 ms floor the chain hands over to the browser's own setInterval, which keeps the floor's cadence best, until a tick finds the speed changed. A timer the floor held back is in the audit (capped) and the report (chromium.timer_rate_capped). chromium.rate_change_affects_running_timers now says what is left: a one-time timer already waiting.
 • performance.timeOrigin (R5-P8) is a getter, so timeOrigin + now() is Date.now().
 • The clock is closed over (R5-B8). __chronomock is a frozen object of methods (set, schedule, release, audit, zoneRead) on a property that is neither enumerable, writable nor configurable. A shim of an older build left in a page is still moved, released and read.
 • Rest parameters, and a one-value Date built directly (R5-WY3).
 • Protocol (R5-P18, R5-P19). Every answer to start carries the start's id (both built-in clients send 1), the last-resort error line carries PROTOCOL_VERSION, a relative jump in a Chromium session steps on FILETIME as natively, an unknown kind is moment.unsupported_kind in both mechanisms, and a change of speed is a caveat only when a context was there.

Measured (Electron 44, Chromium 152)

 • Nesting floor, no core, two runs: the first six links of a chain and ticks of an interval run unfloored, from the seventh 4 ms.
 • Frames, two runs on the new core: after a jump of ten days and a change to x60, every frame of the page's origin (nested, added later, srcdoc, scripted about:blank) and the frame of another site follow the clock. The frame of the same site on another port stays, and the session says chromium.frames_unreached. Before: only the page itself moved, and the frame of another site read the real clock.
 • Interval cadence, old and new core alternating, the browser's background throttling off: x60 and 1000 ms went from 960 to 999.8-1000.1 ms of session time a tick. Under the floor (x60 and 100 ms, x1440) the cadence is unchanged at 3.99 ms, now with the warning. A first version that kept the chain under the floor ran 210 ticks a second against the browser's 250 - hence the hand-over.
 • On a live page: __chronomock is not in Object.keys(window), is frozen and holds only the methods, and timeOrigin + now() - Date.now() is 0.

Verified

 • Every change has a revert probe that went red, two batches of six mutations, each caught by a named check.
 • cargo test: 534 in the binary (522 before this branch's new tests, two source-pattern tests replaced by execution), 1072 in the workspace. C# 875. Gates 10/10, clippy at the pinned ceilings (cdp_session 140 of 147).
 • The GUI texts were checked on the render: the two new warnings lay out as their neighbours do, two lines at the list's width.

Review round

All three CodeRabbit comments were valid and are addressed.

 • window.length decided the frame walk. It is [Replaceable], so a page's own length = 0 hid every frame from the moves and the audit, and a huge value looped the walk once a second. The shim now takes the engine's getter at install, before the page's scripts, and holds the count under a ceiling of 1024 - a frame past it is counted as not reached from the frame tree. The harness gives the page's window a [Replaceable] accessor, and two checks cover a page that sets length to 0 and a frame with a page-chosen length of 1e9. A scenario now runs under a 30 s limit, so a shim caught in a loop fails the test instead of holding the gate. Checked again on Electron 44: the frames follow the jump and the change of speed.
 • A frame that goes before its shim showed already stayed uncovered, with nothing to guard it - a regression test detaches such a frame before its first audit and checks that it is still counted as not covered.
 • Node.js as a prerequisite is now in CONTRIBUTING.md, with the versions the tests run on.

Every fix has a revert probe that went red, the ceiling's through the new time limit. cargo test 1073, gates 8/8 on the changed areas.

…er its clock, and run it in the gate (R5 wave 5b)

The time shim is now run, not only read: twelve scenarios execute the shim and the expressions a
session sends in Node, on a scope whose clocks and timers the test drives, with the browser's 4 ms
floor and with frames as realms of their own (R5-A10). Node is on the CI image.

- Frames (R5-P5): a jump, a change of speed, the audit and the release reach every frame of the
page's own origin. The core counts the frames in the page's process from Page.getFrameTree before
each audit, and a page whose shim reached fewer two audits in a row is said as
 chromium.frames_unreached.
- A frame of another site got no shim at all (R5-F11): the evaluate found no document, and the hook
was taken back. With the hook in, the frame now takes the shim from it, and is counted covered once
 its audit shows the shim.
- Timers (R5-P6): setInterval is a chain of setTimeout aimed one step at the rate of now, so a change
of speed takes from the next tick, and a delay is rounded rather than cut - x60 and 1000 ms went from
960 to 1000 ms of session time a tick, measured. Under the browser's 4 ms floor the chain hands over
to the browser's own setInterval, which keeps the floor's cadence, and the audit says
 chromium.timer_rate_capped.
- performance.timeOrigin is a getter, so timeOrigin + now() is Date.now() (R5-P8).
- __chronomock is a frozen object of methods on a property that is neither enumerable, writable nor
configurable, and the clock is closed over (R5-B8). Rest parameters, and a one-value Date built
 directly (R5-WY3).
- Every answer to start carries the start's id, and the protocol's last-resort line its version
 (R5-P18).
- A relative jump in a Chromium session steps on FILETIME as natively, a kind of moment neither
mechanism knows is refused alike, and a change of speed is a caveat only with a context to feel it
 (R5-P19).

📝 Walkthrough

The Chromium clock shim now handles timer-rate limits, same-origin frame propagation, unreachable-frame reporting, and pending injection contexts. The PR also changes relative jump resolution, startup response IDs, protocol fallback versions, and related warnings and tests.

Changes: Chromromium clock and coverage

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shim clock, timers, and jump behavior
crates/cli/src/cdp/session.rs, crates/cli/src/cdp_clock.rs, crates/cli/src/cdp/shim_*
The shim changes clock and timer handling, propagates updates to reachable frames, and supports release through its API. Relative jumps preserve milliseconds, and unsupported kinds return moment.unsupported_kind. Node-backed tests cover these behaviors.
Frame injection and coverage tracking
crates/cli/src/cdp/session.rs, crates/cli/src/cdp_attach.rs, crates/cli/src/cdp_requests.rs, crates/cli/src/cdp_session.rs
Injection can report a context as awaiting its first document. Frame-tree and shim-audit results track reached frames, confirm awaiting contexts, and update coverage outcomes.
Timer and frame audit warnings
crates/cli/src/cdp_audit.rs, crates/cli/src/embedded_bridge.rs, crates/cli/src/cdp_session.rs, crates/cli/src/report.rs, gui/ChronoMock.App/Localization/*, gui/ChronoMock.App.Tests/LocalizationTests.cs, CHANGELOG.md
Audit and reporting paths add warnings for timer intervals capped by the 4 ms floor and frames the shim could not reach. Rate-change warnings distinguish repeating timers from pending one-time timers.

Start response identifiers and protocol versions

Layer / File(s) Summary
Start identifiers and fallback error versions

Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems

Explanation

The new shim execution tests launch an external Node process for every scenario. run_scenario calls Command::new("node").arg(&file).output() at crates/cli/src/cdp/shim_exec.rs:44, and the test module invokes it 19 times. This adds repeated process startup and blocking output collection to the test suite, although the scenarios use the same harness and can be batched. The production CDP audit work does not show a clear matching performance defect.

Resolution

Refactor the shim tests to use one persistent Node worker, or one Node process per isolated test batch. Run each scenario in a fresh VM or reset harness state between scenarios, return per-scenario results, and remove the per-scenario Command::new("node").output() calls.

Full details: System Changes Are Reversible

Explanation

The PR changes process injection. crates/cli/src/cdp/session.rs installs non-restorable Date, timer, and performance overrides and propagates them to reachable frames (eachFrame and api.set/schedule/release), but cdp_session ends with attacher.settle() and launched.shutdown_with_residue(); it never calls Attacher::release(). The saved originals are only closed over, and no restore API exists. The normal Stop path therefore relies on killing the isolated browser. The crash path is not safe: cdp/launch.rs documents that a force-killed core can leave Electron running, while the next-start orphan sweep only removes dead profiles. A visible Stop and target-scoped isolated profile exist, but they do not satisfy restoration on crash and next start.

Resolution

Add one idempotent cleanup path for End, stdin EOF, app/connection close, attach failures, and normal shutdown. Call Attacher::release() before browser teardown; make the shim restore all saved Date, timer, performance, and __chronomock state and remove every new-document hook and timezone override, including frame contexts. Protect the launched browser with a guaranteed job or equivalent crash cleanup. On the next start, detect and terminate or reconnect to orphaned session browsers before deleting profiles. Add tests for Stop, app close, forced core termination, and next-start recovery.

Full details: No Resource Leaks

Explanation

Attacher.awaiting: HashMap<u32, bool> can grow for the session lifetime. The PR inserts an entry when a frame has no document at cdp_attach.rs:590-595 and removes it only when a later audit confirms the shim at :452-456. The detach path calls Requests::forget at :489, which removes the context and its requests but does not remove the corresponding awaiting entry. Repeated transient frames can therefore retain one map entry each, and failed() continues to count detached frames at :803-807.

Resolution

Remove awaiting entries when Target.detachedFromTarget or Target.targetDestroyed removes their contexts. Make Requests::forget return the removed context indices, or add an equivalent removal API, then call self.awaiting.remove(&index) for each index. Add a regression test that repeatedly attaches an awaiting frame, detaches it before its first audit, and verifies the awaiting state and failed count do not accumulate.

Full details: Scope, Duplication And Docs

Explanation

The pull request adds a new test runtime requirement without updating repository documentation. crates/cli/src/cdp/mod.rs:11-12 includes shim_exec in every test build, and crates/cli/src/cdp/shim_exec.rs:44-48 runs node; therefore cargo test --workspace now requires Node.js. The CI workflow still runs that command at .github/workflows/ci.yml:179-180, while CONTRIBUTING.md:110-112 only documents the command. The changelog documents the shipped Chromium behavior, not this contributor requirement. The feature scope otherwise matches the title, description, and changelog, and the changed CLI internals are not an external public API.

Resolution

Document Node.js as a prerequisite for cargo test --workspace in CONTRIBUTING.md, including the supported version or PATH requirement. Also make CI install or verify the same Node.js version explicitly, instead of relying on an incidental windows-latest image tool.

…ngth, a frame gone before its shim stays uncovered, Node is a prerequisite

- window.length is [Replaceable], so a page's own number decided the frame walk: 0 hid every frame
from the moves and the audit, and a huge value looped the walk once a second. The shim takes the
engine's getter at install, before the page's scripts, and holds the count under 1024 - a frame past
it is counted as not reached from the frame tree. The harness gives the page's window a
[Replaceable] accessor, and a scenario runs under a 30 s limit, so a shim caught in a loop fails the
test instead of holding the gate.
- A frame that goes before any audit showed its shim already stayed uncovered (R5-D46) - a regression
 test now guards it.
- CONTRIBUTING.md lists Node.js, which cargo test needs for the shim's execution tests.

…ies, and two tests made to prove what they say

The six R5 waves (donislawdev#103, donislawdev#104, donislawdev#105, donislawdev#109, donislawdev#110, donislawdev#111) added 137 tests whose revert probes were
measured by hand and kept nowhere the weekly run repeats them. Every one of them is named by an
entry now, r5-w1 to r5-w5b, each a mutation of the code its test guards, all caught with
mutate.ps1 -Only wave by wave. Three of the tests are helper processes, ten had entries already.

Two entries found a test that did not prove what it says. A C# test of the calculator's zone line
was red when run alone: it read the strings through an application only another test had started,
and asks through the shared WPF host now. The test of the PE header reader never gave it a header
without the PE signature, so a mutation dropping that check went unseen. It does now.
