What was wrong

held::tests::a_view_is_unmapped_unless_the_session_takes_it (crates/mech/src/held.rs) dropped a ControlView and then asked VirtualQuery whether anything was mapped at the view's address. The 129 tests of the chrono-mech binary run in parallel and map memory and start processes, so memory another test took at that address after the drop made the question answer "mapped". Red with no change of its own:

Locally it was green 40 of 40, so the weekly mutation run (first one from cron on Friday 2026-10-23, red at anything but caught or NOT HERE) would have been red for no reason.

What changes

The question is put to the view, not to the address:

  • each view gets a random marker at its start (never zero, because a fresh page file backed view reads as zeros)
  • holds(address, marker) reads only from a committed MEM_MAPPED region, through ReadProcessMemory on this process, which checks the whole range before it copies and fails instead of faulting
  • before the question about the dropped view, the test maps a new view at the same address with MapViewOfFileEx (succeeds only when the region is free), so the case CI ran into happens in every run instead of by chance
  • before the drop, the test checks that the question sees a live view, so a question that always says "no" cannot pass it

a_target_dropped_before_it_runs_is_ended now ends the target through its own handle when the guard fails, so a red run leaves no suspended PING.EXE behind.

Registry

crates/mech/src/held.rs had no entry in tests/mutation/entries.json. Six new r5-a6 entries, all caught with mutate.ps1 -Only "r5-a6 ":

Entry Red at
a dropped view is never unmapped "the view outlived its guard"
the view handed to the session is unmapped anyway "the guard unmapped a view it handed over"
a target dropped before it runs is left suspended "the target outlived its guard"
the hand-over leaves the guard armed "the guard ended a target it handed over"
any view at a dropped view's address is taken for it "the view outlived its guard"
the question about a view sees nothing "the question does not see a view that is there"

The last two are the revert probes of this fix.

Measured

  • going back to a question about the address (|| for && in holds): red in 50 of 50 runs of the test alone and in 10 of 10 runs of the whole library, every time at "the view outlived its guard"
  • the fixed test: green in 100 of 100 runs alone and 20 of 20 runs of the whole library (129 tests)
  • tools/gates.ps1 -Changed: 10 of 10, Rust 1075 tests (the same count as on main), C# 875, harness 229 of 229 on x64 and x86
  • no PING.EXE left after the six entries

Test-only change, nothing for CHANGELOG.md.

Review round (2622f11)

One CodeRabbit comment, on held.rs line 231, valid and fixed.

  • The replacement view could be skipped without a word. When a test running beside this one took the released address first, page_view(Some(address)) gave None and the run went on, so in that run the question never met a view in the dropped one's place. Valid for a run of the whole library. Overstated for the registry: an entry runs the test with an exact filter, so no other test competes for the address (the || entry was red 50 of 50). Fixed as suggested, with one change: the test drops a new marked view and tries again, up to 16 times (PLACE_TRIES), and is red with "no try in 16 put a new view in a dropped one's place" when none gets the address. It still asks about the dropped view in every try before it decides to try again, so a view that is never unmapped stays red on the first try with "the view outlived its guard" (checked by hand), not after sixteen.
  • Revert probe: with no view ever put in the place, the test is red with the new message, and green once the new assertion is taken out as well, which is the case the comment described. A seventh entry, r5-a6 no new view is ever put in a dropped view's place, holds it.
  • Measured after the round: all seven r5-a6 entries caught, the test green in 100 of 100 runs alone and 20 of 20 runs of the whole library, tools/gates.ps1 -Changed 10 of 10 (Rust 1075, C# 875, harness 229 of 229 on x64 and x86), no PING.EXE left.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Strengthened Windows test coverage for mapped-view ownership, handoff, and cleanup, including cases where views share an address.
    • Improved checks that suspended processes are terminated when their guard is dropped, including when waiting for the process times out.
    • Expanded mutation testing to cover failures in view cleanup, process termination, ownership handoff, and view-content validation.

…y its address

`held::tests::a_view_is_unmapped_unless_the_session_takes_it` asked VirtualQuery whether anything
was mapped at the address of a view it had just dropped. The tests of the chrono-mech binary map
memory in parallel, so memory another test took there made the question answer "mapped" - red in
the Gates job of #112 and in two parts of each full mutation run on #113, with no mutation applied.

The test now writes a random, never zero marker into each view and reads it back through
ReadProcessMemory on its own process, which fails instead of faulting when the page is gone, and
only from a committed mapped view. Before the question about the dropped view it maps a new view at
the same address, so the case CI ran into happens in every run. Going back to a question about the
address is red in 50 of 50 runs of the test alone and in 10 of 10 runs of the whole library, the
fixed test green in 100 of 100 and 20 of 20.

A guard failing in `a_target_dropped_before_it_runs_is_ended` no longer leaves a suspended ping
behind.

Six registry entries for held.rs, which had none: the view never unmapped, the view handed to the
session unmapped anyway, the target left suspended, the guard left armed after the hand-over, any
view at the address taken for ours, and a question that sees nothing. All six caught.

📝 Walkthrough

Windows tests now verify mapped-view contents during release and session handoff. The suspended-target test terminates the target if it does not exit within five seconds. Mutation entries cover changes to view cleanup, handoff ownership, and target termination.

Changes: Held Resource Tests

Layer / File(s) Summary
Mapped-view ownership checks
crates/mech/src/held.rs, tests/mutation/entries.json
The test checks committed mapped memory and reads a marker to verify view presence. It checks that dropping the view releases its mapping and that handing it to the session preserves it. Mutation entries cover view cleanup, handoff ownership, and marker checks.
Suspended-target cleanup
crates/mech/src/held.rs, tests/mutation/entries.json
The suspended-target test terminates the target after a five-second wait timeout, then asserts that it exited. Mutation entries cover target termination and guard creation during handoff.

Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only test code in crates/mech/src/held.rs after #[cfg(test)] and adds mutation-test registry entries. It does not change non-UI runtime behavior. Existing tests are not deleted or skipped, and their assertions are not weakened; the view test adds marker-based positive and negative checks, while the process test preserves the exit-code assertion and adds failure cleanup.

Full details: No Secrets Or Debug Leftovers

Explanation

The pull request changes only crates/mech/src/held.rs and tests/mutation/entries.json. No added CLAUDE.md, CLAUDE.local.md, AGENTS.md, .claude/, or .env files exist. Added lines contain no credentials, private URLs, local absolute paths, machine or user names, internal IPs, personal emails, or debug output/breakpoint calls.

Full details: No Hardcoded Ui Styling

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only Rust test code in crates/mech/src/held.rs and mutation metadata in tests/mutation/entries.json. It does not add or change XAML, Slint, Fyne, Tkinter, WPF, or other GUI code.

Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems

Explanation

No clear performance problem is introduced. The changes are limited to Windows test code and mutation metadata. They add a bounded number of MapViewOfFileEx, VirtualQuery, and ReadProcessMemory calls for a few test views, plus existing process-wait cleanup. No UI-thread work, large collection processing, per-item expensive calls, or polling loop is added.

Full details: Desktop Robustness

Explanation

The PR changes only crates/mech/src/held.rs test code and mutation-test metadata. The changed code is inside #[cfg(test)] and uses local Windows mapping/process APIs to verify cleanup. It does not add working-directory asset loading, settings/data persistence, culture-sensitive parsing, user-facing long operations, confirmation-sensitive actions, window-lifetime background work, admin requests, or user-facing network calls.

Full details: Safe File Parsing

Explanation

No unsafe file parsing is introduced. The Rust diff only adds Windows memory APIs (VirtualQuery, ReadProcessMemory, MapViewOfFileEx) for test memory checks. The six new tests/mutation/entries.json objects contain fixed relative paths to crates/mech/src/held.rs and fixed string replacements; they do not parse external files, execute content, deserialize arbitrary types, or write formula-bearing files. The existing registry reader is unchanged.

Full details: System Changes Are Reversible

Explanation

PASS — The PR changes only Windows test code and mutation metadata. It creates temporary test processes and memory mappings, then terminates or unmaps them. It does not add or change network rules, proxy/firewall settings, system time, process hooking/injection, Windows services, registry, or drivers.

Full details: Clear User-Facing Text

Explanation

PASS — The pull request changes Windows test code and mutation-registry entries only. The added strings are test assertion diagnostics, comments, and mutation names; no user-facing control, icon, error, confirmation, or product terminology is changed.

Full details: No Resource Leaks

Explanation

PASS. The pull request changes only Windows test code and mutation metadata. The new test closes a failed CreateFileMappingW mapping handle, relies on ControlView to unmap views and close mapping handles, explicitly releases the handed-off view and handle, and uses SuspendedTarget to terminate and close process handles. No long-lived application resource path changes or unbounded accumulation were introduced.

Full details: Scope, Duplication And Docs

Explanation

The PR changes only crates/mech/src/held.rs tests and six matching mutation entries in tests/mutation/entries.json. The marker-based view checks, same-address replacement mapping, and cleanup on wait timeout are all described in the title and PR description. The diff adds no public API, CLI, configuration, persisted format, build requirement, or user-facing behavior. Repository searches found no existing duplicate helpers or equivalent patterns, so no README or CHANGELOG update is required.

Comment thread crates/mech/src/held.rs Outdated
…w's place in one of sixteen tries, or the test is red

When a test running beside this one took the released address first, the view meant for that
address could not be made and the run went on without it, so in that run the question never met a
view in the dropped one's place. The test now drops a new marked view and tries again, up to 16
times, and is red when no try gets the address. It still asks about the dropped view in every try,
so a view that is never unmapped is red on the first try with "the view outlived its guard".

Measured: with no view ever put in the place, the test is red with the new message, and green once
the new assertion is taken out as well. A seventh registry entry holds that case. All seven r5-a6
entries caught, the test green in 100 of 100 runs alone and in 20 of 20 runs of the whole library.
