Concurrent single-member ZADD, ZREM and ZINCRBY requests against one large grouped zset can overlap page IO when their groups do not conflict. The key retains IX while ordered group locks protect both indexes through publication; structural or unsupported plans release those holds and re-execute under whole-key X protection. Point routing and post-lock revalidation binary-search resident (max_score, max_key) boundaries in O(log G); undecidable member prefixes fall back to X without reading unlocked ordered pages.

Dependent commit decisions append in order within one physical block and share a flush. The append path rechecks the block after data waits and flushes the predecessor prefix before a dependent append can cross blocks. This removes the per-decision flush bottleneck while preserving crash recovery order and the existing on-disk format.

Builds on the prepared-publication foundation merged in #431. This PR targets main and contains only step 5 and dependent commit batching. Benchmark scripts and results remain local.

Validation:

  • Debug and Release builds and formatting checks passed.
  • Core concurrency/commit validation at 1cdba3cb1: all 1,176 unit tests through CTest, six focused zset E2E tests and eight dependent-commit E2E scenarios passed.
  • Routing validation at a098a6ea2: two new E2E tests verify logarithmic probe counts for 16,384 equal-score members and X fallback for ambiguous prefixes, including cold recovery of both indexes. Twelve existing concurrency, score-movement, boundary, failure and recovery E2E tests also passed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Performance Improvements

    • Eligible single-member Sorted Set additions and removals can proceed concurrently when they affect separate groups, improving throughput for independent updates.
    • Related updates are coordinated to preserve consistent Sorted Set results.
  • Reliability

    • Dependent writes are committed in order, including when commit batches span storage blocks.
    • Recovery and shutdown handling support dependent writes, concurrent updates, and commit failures. Validation also covers conflicting reads and writes, fallback behavior, and recovery after concurrent updates.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

Eligible standalone Sorted Set point writes can use IX and group-level locking when they meet bounded-publication requirements. Dependent commit decisions can append in order within one physical block and flush together. Tests cover concurrent writes, fallback paths, rollover, crashes, shutdown, and commit failures.

Grouped Sorted Set writes and commits

Layer / File(s) Summary
Point-write arbitration and group validation
docs/architecture/03-transaction-coordination.md, docs/architecture/09-grouped-collections.md, include/lavik/storage/sorted_set.h, src/storage/engine/impl.h, src/storage/engine/grouped/*, src/storage/engine/sorted_set_api.cpp, src/storage/engine/grouped/zset.cpp, tests/grouped/zset_write_e2e_test.cpp
Eligible standalone point writes use IX and lock member and ordered groups. The implementation refreshes locked group metadata, validates routes, and falls back to whole-key X when a plan is ineligible or needs an exclusive retry. Tests cover lock conflicts, concurrent updates, transaction behavior, routing, and recovery.
Dependent commit batching and recovery
docs/architecture/03-transaction-coordination.md, docs/architecture/09-grouped-collections.md, src/storage/engine/impl.h, src/storage/engine/write.cpp, tests/tx_commit_retry_e2e.py, CMakeLists.txt, scripts/ci_test_durations.json
Commit draining appends dependent decisions within a retained block prefix and flushes before retrying when the prefix cannot be extended. Capacity retries remain separate. Tests cover batching, rollover, crashes, shutdown, and commit failures. CTest registers six cases with duration estimates.

Explanation

The description provides clear context, before-and-after behavior, implementation details, and test results. It does not explicitly cover design alternatives, documentation confirmation, risk assessment, rollback, reviewer guidance, or follow-up work, but the core information is sufficiently complete and directly related to the changes.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 14.29% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 21 functions across 10 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Replace the linear equal-score scan in locate with a binary search.

The locate lambda advances one page at a time across every page whose maximum score equals the target score. It continues while each cached last member sorts before the target member. Its cost grows with the number of tied pages, and it runs without yielding on the owner worker. Search the equal-score range with cached LessThan probes instead, and return nullopt on an undecided probe.

Coverage note: locate only walks when the cached boundaries are warm and decide the comparison. Cold or ambiguous caches stop at the first page and fall back to X, so the cost stays small in those cases.
