Summary

Engine fixes for the CSS WPT reftests run by the simulator rig (simulator/test/wpt). There is one commit per fix; fix 05 is three commits. Each commit message names the tests it fixes and gives the full-run numbers before and after.

The rig changes ride in geastack/simulator#7: fonts, named colors, and transport for more display values and elements. The WPT numbers below need both PRs.

"Now" is this PR plus geastack/simulator#7 (dea97af + 8e4ee84), a full 1,100-case run:

PASS FAIL BLOCKED SKIP ERROR
Start: core e6115c3, rig main (497 tests run) 433 62 1 603 1
Now: the same 497 tests 497 0 0 603 0
Now: the 157 tests the rig PR un-skips 105 52 0 – 0
Now: all 1,100 cases 602 52 0 446 0
  • All 64 tests that did not pass at the start (62 FAIL, 1 BLOCKED, 1 ERROR) now pass. No test that passed at the start stopped passing. After every fix I ran all 1,100 cases and compared them test by test.
  • 5 of those 64 pass only together with the rig PR: border-image-outset-003 needs its named-color change (8617f81), and line-clamp/block-ellipsis-023, -024, -034 and -037 need its monospace font (53a06d5).
  • The 52 remaining fails are all in the 157 tests the rig PR un-skips.

Behavior changes apps can see

These make the engine match browsers, but app layouts can shift:

  • Inline-level display values. display: inline, inline-block, inline-flex and inline-grid used to lay out as blocks (inline-flex as block-level flex, and so on). They now lay out inline (0fdbdf6, d0a7d48). The compiler plugin (geatsc-plugin-gea/src/utils.ts) and build-gea-vite-geatsc.mjs encode the new display values.
  • text-align encoding. left and end get their own values (3 and 4) so start can follow direction (8347666). The plugin and the engine have to ship together.
  • Block flex items in a row without a width size to their content instead of filling the row (02bea8e). Native nodes default to display: block, so this reaches apps.
  • Bare flex text is drawn on its baseline unless the container centres it vertically. align-items: center buttons keep ink centring; other flex text moves up 1–2px (bfe7496).
  • Sibling combinators. + and ~ now match, also in the compiler's static selector plans (56fde5f). Before, build-gea-vite-geatsc.mjs parsed + as a tag name.
  • RAM. Box width/height is 32-bit (dea97af), so Node grows from 388 to 400 bytes on 32-bit targets: +6 KB at 512 nodes. Display-list commands did not grow; rects that overflow int16 saturate when they are recorded.

A native test expectation changed

021d0c0 changes one expectation in test_css_block_and_flexbasis_main.cpp. The abspos baseline fallback's end side follows the grid, not the child's own direction or writing mode, which is what WPT grid-abspos-staticpos-*-002 require.

Validation

  • WPT: a full run after every fix, compared per test with the previous run.
  • Natives: the affected native tests after every fix, and the same 12 standard natives on every fix from fix 32 on. The full list under packages/core/test after fixes 41 and 45 (55 scripts in the last run): only fixed-text-local-refresh and gea-style-viewport-metrics fail, with the same messages as on e6115c3.
  • App pipelines (run from examples): app-launcher, stopwatch, todo, tic-tac-toe and weather fail with the same messages on e6115c3. The rest pass.

Not fixed (52)

  • Vertical writing modes in inline layout: 24 (multicol/*-in-multicols, static-position/vlr-*, vrl-*)
  • static-position/htb-* (Ahem antialiasing, RTL): 4
  • Inline-block baseline row: 3
  • line-height: 0 (stored like normal down to the host measure API): 2
  • border-shape: 2
  • Rig-3 leftovers: 13, among them margin-trim with orthogonal items or auto-fit, floats inside inline boxes, new formatting contexts next to floats, and individual-transform-3. That last one conflicts with the rig's transform-scale-z prerequisite.
  • One each: clip-border-area-text, 3d-rendering-context-and-inline, vertical-align-top-bottom-padding, align-items-static-position-001.tentative

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds CSS property parsing and sibling selector behavior. It expands text and multicolumn layout support, and updates display recording and raster replay for borders, shadows, clips, gradients, and input handling.

Changes: CSS Layout and Rendering

Layer / File(s) Summary
CSS declarations and selector matching
packages/engine/ui/node_model.h, packages/engine/ui/style.h, packages/engine/ui/style.cpp, packages/engine/ui/style_values.h, packages/engine/ui/tree_style.cpp, packages/engine/ui/tree_nodes.cpp, packages/engine/ui/tree_internal.h, packages/geatsc-plugin-gea/src/utils.ts, packages/core/scripts/build-gea-vite-geatsc.mjs
Adds storage, parsing, and application for logical properties, line clamping, columns, text alignment and emphasis, border images, background blending, display flags, and sticky positioning. Selector parsing and matching support adjacent and general sibling combinators. Tree mutations and relevant class changes recompute following sibling styles.
Layout state and positioning
packages/engine/ui/layout.cpp, packages/engine/ui/tree_state.h, packages/engine/ui/node_model.h, packages/engine/ui/node_lifecycle.cpp, packages/engine/ui/layout_snapshot.cpp, packages/core/test/test_css_block_and_flexbasis_main.cpp
Layout adds line clamping, multicolumn flow, sticky offsets, margin trimming, inline fragments, vertical alignment, and physical text alignment. Layout dimensions use wider storage and explicit extent clamping. The baseline alignment test changes its fallback expectation.
Text recording and drawing
packages/engine/ui/text.cpp, packages/engine/ui/input_render.cpp, packages/engine/ui/internal.h, packages/engine/ui/input.cpp
Text drawing and commands carry physical and last-line alignment, line limits, ellipses, and emphasis marks. Input commands initialize added text fields. Hit testing and scroll discovery skip line-clamp-hidden nodes.
Display command recording
packages/engine/ui/view.cpp, packages/engine/ui/tree_render.cpp, packages/engine/ui/display_invalidation.cpp, packages/engine/ui/style_values.h, packages/engine/canvas.cpp
Recording adds blend modes, border images and rings, outer shadows, inline fragments, and shaped overflow clips. Dirty-region guards use border-image outsets and current or previous shadow extents. Rounded-rectangle strokes use scanline spans.
Display command replay and refresh
packages/engine/ui/render.cpp, packages/engine/ui/root_scroll_refresh.cpp, packages/engine/ui/internal.h
Replay handles transformed rounded-rectangle rings, shaped clips, blended gradients, text-clipped backgrounds, and multicolumn copies. Root-scroll translation is rejected when sticky elements or column copies are present.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 5 (Critical) | ~120 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: dashersw

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 3652b

Several rendering and style issues remain. Bordered rounded boxes under a translate transform paint solid. Changing text-align at runtime leaves lines misaligned. Content in clamped containers can stay hidden after the clamp is removed. Some blend modes produce wrong pixels. Some feature-disabled builds may not compile. These should be fixed before merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 3652b

Complex styles can leave a partially rendered screen when drawing resources run out. Existing visibility checks remain in place, and no added access to sensitive data or privileged actions was demonstrated. The remaining risk is concentrated in screen-update failure containment and compatibility between compiled styles and their runtime.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: New multicolumn replication and border-image clip/paint/pop sequences commit incrementally into the shared display list. Command exhaustion can leave an incomplete sequence, while initial mount still replays that list and marks the update clean. This extends an existing failure policy to the added paint features and can affect rendering beyond the originating node within the same frame. External attacker control was not established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated failure scope is the shared display list and rendered UI tree. Application-controlled style complexity reaches layout and paint-command generation. A remote content source, cross-tenant exposure, credential access or privilege gain was not established by the inspected paths.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The canonical security input contains no retained findings or verifier candidates, but its completeness is unknown and tree_internal.h is explicitly excluded. The rendering failure-containment concern is not a verified security exploit.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — InputController remains the inspected event and scroll-selection gate. Layout owns production and recomputation of line-clamp state; input consumes that state as an additional rejection condition. No new privileged downstream consumer was identified in this trace.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Border-image tiling falls back to stretching for oversized tile spans, and display commands are capacity-bounded. Shaped-clip replay restores its saved state on exit. These are useful containment controls, but they do not guarantee completion or rollback of an overflowed frame.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make multi-command paint scopes transactional, or reject an overflowed recording before presentation and preserve dirty state for recovery. This would prevent resource exhaustion from being treated as a completed screen update.

Widen the stored box-shadow extent.

layout_snapshot.cpp clamps boxShadowExtent() to 32767. When the actual extent is larger, previous-bound invalidation uses the smaller stored value. Old shadow pixels outside that range can remain uncleared.

Preserve the border width when border-style is none.

The declaration-order failure does not occur because setComputedBorderWidth also applies the none rule after width updates. However, a relief-only update from none to solid can leave the width at zero because the relief setter does not restore the previous width. Store the width and apply the none rule only when reading the computed width.

Keep the authored border width when border-style: none is set.

This code still sets the computed side width to 0 when a relief value has kBorderStyleNone. A later relief-only update from none to solid does not restore the authored width. After that update, the side still renders with width 0. Store the authored width. Apply the none rule only where the computed width is read.

Store the saved width in int32_t in ColumnWidthScope.

This PR widens layout.width to int32_t. ColumnWidthScope still saves the width in an int16_t and writes it back in the destructor. For a multicol container wider than 32767 px, the destructor restores a truncated width after layoutColumns or repositionChildren runs. This is the 16-bit narrowing that the 32-bit box change set out to remove.

Clear line-clamp state when the container stops clamping.

When clampsLines(node) becomes false, both layout paths skip applyLineClamp, so stale line_clamp_hidden and line_clamp_lines values remain. Rendering and hit testing continue to reject hidden descendants. A moved descendant can retain the same stale state.

Use a separate ownership marker. Do not store it in line_clamp_hidden, because existing assignments overwrite that field. Reset each node’s clamp state before layout, then clear owned descendants when clamping stops.

Preserve the disabled-feature build contract.

The new unconditional RareStyle members make RareStyle nonempty even when every family in GEA_CSS_RARE_STYLE is disabled. The static assertion at Line 524 then fails, so that configuration cannot compile.

Guard the new members with their feature families and provide static defaults for disabled configurations. Include those families in GEA_CSS_RARE_STYLE.

Fix the division by zero in BlendDrawer::setSat when all channels are equal.

The guard if (lo == hi) does not detect an achromatic color. The index loop uses < for lo and >= for hi. For an input such as {0.5, 0.5, 0.5}, the loop ends with lo = 0 and hi = 2, so the guard does not return. Then c[hi] - c[lo] is 0, and c[mid] becomes NaN (0/0).

Triggers:

  • Mode 12 (hue) calls setSat(out, sat(cb)) with out = cs. A grey gradient stop makes cs achromatic.
  • Mode 13 (saturation) calls setSat with out = cb. A grey backdrop makes cb achromatic.

White, black and grey are common values for stops and backdrops. The NaN then passes through setLum. Line 5579 casts it with static_cast<int>, which is undefined behavior. The result is wrong pixel values in the blended layer.

Compare the channel values, not the indices:

🐛 Proposed fix
-				if (lo == hi) { c[0] = c[1] = c[2] = 0.0f; return; }
+				if (c[hi] - c[lo] <= 0.0f) { c[0] = c[1] = c[2] = 0.0f; return; }
 				const int mid = 3 - lo - hi;

lo == hi cannot occur after this loop for three channels, so the new check also covers that case.

Accept a color-only text-emphasis shorthand.

The text-emphasis shorthand grammar is <'text-emphasis-style'> || <'text-emphasis-color'>. A color alone, such as text-emphasis: red, is valid. It sets the style to its initial value none.

The current code has two problems:

  • The shorthand rejects a color-only value. The check if (mark < 0 && open < 0) return 0; runs for the shorthand as well as the style longhand.
  • As a result, the whole declaration is dropped. The color is not applied, and an earlier mark set by the cascade is not reset.

🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Trigger sibling restyles only when a sibling key is added or removed.

classTokensTouchSiblingSelectors returns true in two cases:

  • The node's tag is in siblingTags.
  • Any old or current class is in siblingClasses.

A class mutation cannot change the tag. It also cannot change a class that is present both before and after the mutation. Neither case can change a + or ~ match. The function still calls recomputeSiblingsFrom(next_sibling), which restyles the full subtree of every following sibling.

Example: a common separator rule is li + li { border-top: ... }. With that rule, each .active toggle on any li restyles every later li subtree. Outside a mount batch, this is O(siblings × subtree) per toggle. Long lists on embedded targets pay this cost on every interaction.

Test only the symmetric difference of the old and new class sets. The tag parameter is then no longer needed. Update the call at Line 16796 to match.

Limit the native shadow rounded rect to the int16 range, or fall back to spans.

appendShadowRoundedRect writes x, y, w and h into the int16 fields cmd->bx/by/bw/bh, fillRoundedRect.* and strokeRoundedRect.*. It does not saturate these values first. Box dimensions are now 32-bit, so a tall card can exceed 32767 px. For example, a page wrapper with an opaque background, box-shadow: 0 4px 0 #000 and height: 40000px does this.

  1. outerShadowKnockoutHidden returns true for this box.
  2. shadowContourInside(shape, box) fails because of the offset.
  3. The command therefore records h = 40004, which wraps to a negative int16.
  4. The shadow is dropped, or painted with wrong geometry, on every refresh.

The span path does not have this problem, because appendFillRectRaw now calls saturateRect16.

A fix: in recordOuterBoxShadow, turn off the native path when the shadow contour, including blur, goes outside the int16 range.

Proposed fix
 	bool native = outerShadowKnockoutHidden(node, parentAlpha);
 	for (int i = 0; i < 4; ++i) native &= std::fabs(shape.rx[i] - shape.ry[i]) < 0.5f;
 	const int blur = std::max<int>(0, r.box_shadow_blur_radius);
+	// Native rounded commands carry int16 geometry; spans saturate per rect.
+	native &= shape.x - blur >= -32768 && shape.y - blur >= -32768 &&
+	          shape.x + shape.w + blur <= 32767 && shape.y + shape.h + blur <= 32767;

Clamp the final blur band to the blur radius.

outerShadowAlphaAt returns nonzero alpha beyond blur. When band does not divide the blur span, the final contour can exceed the configured radius. The existing one-pixel dirty-region guard does not cover every overshoot.

Clamp the final blur-band width in the loop using offsetShadowContour and
outerShadowAlphaAt: compute the step as the smaller of band and the remaining
distance to blur, then use it for the contour offset and alpha sample. Pass the
same step to appendShadowRoundedRect so the final band’s geometry and thickness
stay within the configured blur radius.

Mark Property::TextAlign as a layout property.

setStyleValue sets layout_dirty only when isLayoutProperty(prop) returns true. Property::TextAlign is missing from that switch. The same write marks the display list dirty, but it does not request layout.

The layout path uses physicalTextAlign(node_) to compute line shifts and inline static positions. A setStyle call can therefore redraw stale positions. Line-aligned runs then keep their previous placement.

Reject border rings in UniformRoundedRectBatch::append.

The change keeps rings out of drawAxisAlignedTransformedRoundedRect (Line 1680), so the ring-aware rasterizers handle them. The batch path does not have the same check. append converts any axis-aligned FillTransformedRoundedRect through transformedRoundedRectToScreenSpan and passes it to fillRoundedRectBoxesRgb565, or to drawCircleLikeScreenSpan for a circle. Neither one knows about r.ring.

The full replay and the dirty-region replays call roundedRects.append(*c) before DisplayCommandDrawer::replay. As a result, a bordered rounded box with an axis-aligned transform (for example a pure translate) paints its whole outer shape. The padding-box hole gets the border colour.

Saturate the native shadow rounded rect, or fall back to spans.

appendShadowRoundedRect still writes unsaturated x, y, w and h into the int16 fields cmd->bx/by/bw/bh, fillRoundedRect.* and strokeRoundedRect.*. recordOuterBoxShadow still selects the native path from outerShadowKnockoutHidden and the radius check only. There is no int16 range check.

Example: an opaque box with height: 40000px and box-shadow: 0 4px 0 #000 records h = 40004. That value wraps to a negative int16. The shadow is then dropped, or painted with wrong geometry. The span path does not have this problem, because appendFillRectRaw calls saturateRect16.

Clamp the last blur band to the blur radius.

The loop still steps by a fixed band. If band does not divide 2 * blur, the last contour reaches past blur. For example, in span mode blur = 16 gives band = 3. The last band then reaches offset 17. That band paints outside boxShadowExtent, and the dirty-rect guard can miss those pixels.

Keep background-layer fields independent of gradient support.

The new fields are inside the gradient feature block. With both gradient macros disabled, unguarded comparisons, setters, accessors, and border-image consumers can reference missing members.

Move these fields to the GEA_CSS_BACKGROUND_LAYERS block. Provide static defaults only when that background-layer feature is disabled. Do not add defaults to the gradient #else branch while background-layer setters remain enabled.

Preserve border widths when applying none, and record none in the border shorthand.

style.cpp:8729 stores zero as the side width. A later border-style: solid update changes only the relief, so the declared width cannot be restored. CSS requires the earlier width to remain effective when the final style is not none.

compileBorderShorthandValue also sets border: none and border: hidden to width 0 but leaves compiled.values[2] at 0. The shorthand then records a normal relief. A later border-width can therefore enable the border, although CSS keeps the border disabled.

Keep the declared width independent from the relief. Resolve none and hidden to an effective width of zero when the width is read, or recompute the effective width when either property changes. Also record kBorderStyleNone for shorthand none and hidden.

Update border width handling so applying `Property::BorderRelief` with `none`
preserves the declared width while the effective width remains zero whenever the
relief is `none` or `hidden`. In `compileBorderShorthandValue`, record
`kBorderStyleNone` for shorthand `none` and `hidden` so later `border-width`
updates cannot enable the border.

An absolutely positioned box shares no baseline, so `baseline` and
`last baseline` use their fallback edge. The static-position path resolved
that edge in the box's own direction/writing mode; Chrome, Firefox and
Safari resolve it to the grid's start/end. In-flow grid items keep the
self-start/self-end fallback.

The native baseline regression pinned the old child-relative edge for an
LTR child in an RTL or vertical-rl grid; it now expects the grid's end.

Top/right/bottom/left are stored as int16 with kUnset (-32768) meaning
auto. Resolved lengths saturate at int32, and storing them truncated the
low 16 bits: -65536px and -99999999999px became 0, 99999999999px became
-1 and -40000px became 25536, so "hidden far off-screen" content painted
at the page edge. Both offset sinks (class/selector rules and inline
style) now keep kUnset and clamp every other length to [-32767, 32767].

A resolved length of exactly -32768px still reads as auto, as before.

Baseline alignment needs baselines that cross the cross axis. When a flex
item's inline axis runs along the cross axis instead (a column, or a row
of a vertical container), CSS Align uses the fallback alignment: safe
self-start/self-end in the item's own writing mode, which wrap-reverse
does not flip. Gea still ran baseline alignment there, so a lone item
stayed at the flex-relative cross start and wrap-reverse moved it to the
wrong edge.

Such items now resolve through baselineFallbackAlignment, stay out of the
line's shared baseline, and skip the wrap-reverse baseline mirror. Only
real flex containers are affected; inline formatting rows are unchanged.
Chrome and Safari pass both tests; Firefox does not.

When an absolutely positioned box takes its static position from inline
layout, its static-position rectangle spans the line box's block extent
(CSS Position 3, 4.1), and align-self aligns the box within it. Gea kept
only the line's top edge, so the box stuck to the top of the line for
every align-self value.

Inline layout now records the line box height with the static position
(0 for a line that is not laid out yet), and alignedAbsoluteOffset
applies an explicit align-self along the block axis of horizontal-tb
containers. align-self: auto keeps the previous start placement.

ViewRenderer::recordBox accepts boxes outside the tree, for which
ViewGeometry::nodeIndex returns -1. backgroundPlacement still read
treeState().nodes[nodeId] for local attachments and non-border-box
origins, i.e. nodes[-1]. The css-3d-cube native test paints such a box;
depending on memory layout the out-of-bounds read raised SIGBUS
(KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE in backgroundPlacement, via
recordBackgroundGrid). Detached boxes now skip the scroll and edge
adjustments.

Evidence: run-gea-css-3d-cube-pipeline.sh no longer crashes (5/5 runs);
it still reports the same positive-z assertion as e6115c3.

A background-attachment: local layer scrolls with a scroll container's
contents, so its painting area is the scrollport: border-box clipping
behaves as padding-box, while content-box is unchanged (upstream
attachment-local-clipping-color-1/2/3). backgroundClip now resolves that
for hidden/auto/scroll overflow, so color and image layers, and the
opaque-border fast path, all see the padding box.

Before, a translucent border of such a box blended over its own
background. With the next commit this passes
css/css-backgrounds/background-attachment-local-hidden.html
(Chrome and Firefox pass it; Safari does not).

The non-antialiased Canvas::strokeRoundedRect drew four edge rectangles
and four corner arcs that overlapped where they met, and the arcs
included the pixel on the inner radius. Translucent borders therefore
blended twice at the joins: a square 10px rgba border had dark corner
squares, a rounded one had dark seams, and the ring bulged 1px into the
padding area at each tangent point.

Each row is now painted once as the outer shape's span minus the inner
(padding-edge) shape's span, using fillRoundedRect's scanline, so the
ring is the exact complement of a fill of the inner box. Opaque borders
only change along the inner curves (about 25 pixels per corner for a
34px radius and 10px width), where the ring now keeps its width. The
antialiased and percent-radius paths are unchanged.

The keyword was rejected, so the declaration was dropped and the color
filled the whole border box. Clip value 4 now paints the color along the
border's own geometry: the same stroke for a uniform width (radii
included), the side rectangles otherwise. Gradient layers still ignore
background-clip, as they already did for padding-box and content-box.

text-align-last is a new inherited style field, stored in ComputedStyle
padding so the struct keeps its size. A DrawText command now carries it:
the drawer applies it to lines a forced break ends and, when
LayoutEngine::endsFormattingLine says the run closes its paragraph
(a <br>, a block box or the container end follows), to the run's final
line.

Aligning a line also stops counting the collapsible spaces that hang at
its end and the leading space the inline flow trims from line 0. Both
put right- and center-aligned text a space off before.

Outer layers were dropped at parse time, so only inset shadows ever
painted. A value's first inset layer still wins; otherwise its first
outer layer is kept (var() values now parse at runtime instead of
compiling outer-only shadows to none).

recordOuterBoxShadow grows the border box by the spread with the CSS
Backgrounds outset-adjusted radii (a circle stays a circle), offsets
it, and approximates the Gaussian blur with constant-alpha bands.
Nothing paints inside the border box: over an opaque border-box
background each band is one native rounded fill or ring and fully
covered parts are skipped; otherwise rows are painted as spans with
the box knocked out. A sharp shadow (blur 0) with no radii on the
shadow or the box is at most four FillRects for the parts outside the
box under one alpha scope, or one rect when it misses the box, instead
of a fill under the whole box that the background paints over again.
A shadow whose contour, blur included, leaves the int16 range takes
the saturating span path.

recordBox tests the rare-style shadow alpha byte inline and calls
recordOuterBoxShadow only for a box that has an outer shadow. Node
bounds grow by the shadow's reach, and the reach at the last snapshot
is kept in RenderState as 32 bits, so dirty regions cover both the new
and the old shadow.

A blurred shadow on the span path (translucent background, transform
or elliptical corner) emits commands per band per corner row, about
670 for a radius-12, blur-16 card. Desktop harness, box-shadow-24 (24
cards alternating a sharp and a blurred rounded shadow): the strip
path paints the same pixels as the full fill. Not measured on the
board yet.

A gradient whose stops share one opaque colour, such as the common
linear-gradient(c, c) image layer, went through the dithered gradient
rasterizer. On RGB565 that speckled a colour a plain fill paints flat
(#008000 alternated between two greens), so the same colour differed
between background-color and background-image. Such gradients now fill
directly, which is also cheaper.

line-clamp and its longhands were not parsed. A block container with
continue: collapse now walks its content after layout: past its
max-lines'th line, or without max-lines past the last content that fits
its used height, every box is hidden from painting and hit testing, a
text run the clamp point cuts paints only its first lines, and an
automatic height ends at the clamp point. Lines inside inline wrappers
and plain blocks count; independent formatting contexts are units. A
container that stops clamping clears the hidden and line-count state
its last clamp left on its descendants (line_clamp_owner marks it).

As in CSS Overflow 4, inline boxes, flex and grid containers, and
multicol containers never clamp, so columns / column-count /
column-width are tracked for that alone. -webkit-line-clamp is the
legacy form, which only clamps display: -webkit-box, so it never
collapses here. block-ellipsis is parsed but not painted yet.

GEA_CSS_LINE_CLAMP (default on) gates the family and joins
GEA_CSS_RARE_STYLE. Off, the RareStyle fields and the three LayoutBox
fields (line_clamp_hidden, line_clamp_owner, line_clamp_lines) are
static constexpr 0, so the render, input and text reads fold away, and
the clamp walk and the clamp blocks of layoutNode and
repositionChildren are not compiled; clampsLines stays outside the gate
and folds to false. An app that does not use it pays a byte test per
node: no cross-unit call, no allocation, no per-pixel work. The gate
off saves 4 bytes of LayoutBox and Node (host). The analyzer and CLI do
not report the family yet.

applyLineClamp walks the subtree twice and measures each text node, for
clamp containers whose layout is dirty only.

vertical-align was not parsed, so every inline item sat on the
baseline. One-line inline items now shift for middle, text-top,
text-bottom, sub and super, and top/bottom items align to the line box
edges. As in CSS, non-replaced inline boxes align by their line-height
box, which differs from Gea's layout box when the line-height is below
the font size, and a line holding aligned items is sized from the
block's strut and every item's reach, negative ones included.

The strut is only applied to lines with aligned items for now:
applying it everywhere is correct CSS but would lengthen lines of
small inline text that current layouts rely on.

sticky parsed as static. It is now its own position value: the box
stays in flow and, while absolute coordinates are resolved, shifts just
enough to stay inset by its top/right/bottom/left from the nearest
scrollport (a scroll container's padding box, or the viewport) without
leaving its containing block. Sticky boxes contain absolute descendants.

The offset depends on scroll positions, so the root scroll-only refresh
re-sticks the boxes instead of dragging them along with the content:

- The absolute-coordinate pass records each sticky box it places, the
offset it added and where it left the box, in a 32-slot table in
TreeState; a subtree pass forgets its own boxes before writing them
again. The fast path rejects a frame whose box is not where the table
says; more than 32 boxes set stickyOverflow until the next root pass.
- After the content shifts by the scroll delta, the boxes whose
scrollport is the scroll node or above it get their offset taken back
  and applyStickyOffset applied again (stickyBoxesScrolledBy,
restickScrolledBox). A box whose scrollport is below the scroll node
moves with the content; a sticky box inside one of them rejects the
  frame.
- The commands of a re-stuck box's subtree move by its extra shift,
node by node for up to four inner nodes.
- A box that keeps its place and covers the scrollport across the
scroll axis from one edge keeps the pixels of that band:
DisplayList::regionPaintedOnlyBy proves that after the last node
covering the band opaquely nothing that scrolls, and nothing outside
the box, paints into it. The blit and the revealed strip leave the
band out; the box's paint outside the band, and the old thumb
  position inside it, are repaired.
- A box without a band (pushed or let go) repaints where the blit
dragged its last paint and where it sits now.
- The esp32 software scroll register rotates the rows of the rect it
scrolled last and restarts at zero for a new one, so a frame where
bands appear or go away resets it and repaints its rows and the
  scrollport once (board only).

At most four boxes move in a frame; more record the list afresh and
repaint the scrollport. A dirty node inside a sticky box, virtual-list
slots and nested sticky boxes in one scrollport still reject the frame.

GEA_CSS_STICKY (default on) gates the family. Off, sticky parses as
static, the sticky helpers, scrollport tracking and the table are not
compiled, and TreeState::stickyPresent is static constexpr false. An
app without sticky boxes reads one bool per scroll frame; DisplayCommand,
Node, ComputedStyle and LayoutBox keep their sizes, TreeState grows by
322 bytes. The analyzer and CLI do not report the family yet.

Desktop harness: sticky-scroll-96 (scroll-96 plus a sticky header)
about 50 us a frame and sticky-sections-96 (32 sections, headers pushed
out) about 59 us, the level of scroll-96 without sticky; a full record
and replay of the same frames costs 306 and 390 us. Frames 1-72 of both
are bit-identical to that full path. Not measured on the board yet.

A float inside an inline wrapper now joins the enclosing block's float
context, the way blocks inside inlines already do, instead of being
confined to the wrapper's box.

Floats end inline runs in this layout, so a float anchored where the
line cannot break (inside a word or nowrap text) split the line. Move
such a float to the next soft wrap opportunity, which places it after
the line holding its anchor as CSS does.

Line breaking now honours soft wrap opportunities between items: an
overflowing item only starts a new line where the line may break, and
items glued together start the next line as one unit. Collapsible
spaces of atomic text collapse across items, are removed at the start
of a line, and hang at its end instead of opening another line.

block-ellipsis was parsed but never painted. A custom string from
line-clamp or block-ellipsis is now interned as a CSS atom in RareStyle
padding; an empty string paints nothing, like none.

The clamp walk marks the text run whose line immediately precedes the
clamp point; a block in between takes the ellipsis away, as in CSS
Overflow 4. Phantom content (collapsible spaces, empty inline boxes)
neither counts as a line nor introduces a clamp point.

DrawText carries the ellipsis and the room up to the end of the line
box. The painter drops trailing characters until the ellipsis fits,
removes the spaces before it and appends it. The default ellipsis is
U+2026 when the font has it and "..." otherwise.

A uniform border on a rotated or scaled box was not painted at all
unless the box was a full ellipse. FillTransformedRoundedRect gains a
ring mode: the rasterizer paints inside the border box and outside the
padding box, whose CSS inner radii it derives from the border widths.
A ring never joins the uniform rounded-rect span batch, whose
rasterizers do not know about the hole.

Overflow clips now carry their shape: the padding box with its inner
radii, and for a transformed box the screen parallelogram, which is also
clipped now (perspective projections stay unclipped as before). Display
clips are rectangles, so replay saves the pixels the shape's bounds may
expose (only the four corner boxes of an untransformed box), lets the
clipped content paint, and restores every pixel outside the shape,
blending partly covered edges. The stream replay, the node-range
dirty-region replays and the simple dirty-region replay all do this, and
record-time culling uses the same clip bounds.

The cost is bounded:

- A shaped clip stays open across consecutive nodes under it inside a
dirty-region pass (ShapedClips::PassScope / reconcile), so the corners
are saved and restored once per clip per region, not once per node.
- The stream replay saves only inside the union of the draw bounds
between a PushClip and its PopClip (paint order wraps each row of a
scroll container in its own scope of the container's clip; most of
them paint nothing near a corner), opens no entry for a scope that
paints nothing, and computes the inverse matrix only when there is
  something to save.
- Saved boxes are cut to the dirty region; an untransformed corner is
restored through a cached coverage mask that samples exactly as the
per-pixel path does (bit-identical on 349 million corner pixels),
by per-row spans: a memcpy for the uncovered run, a blend for the
antialiased band, nothing for the covered run.
- A clip whose exposed area exceeds kMaxSavedPixels stays a plain
rectangle instead of saving a screenful; overflowClipShape answers an
untransformed box without radii before computing borders and radii.
- In the simple dirty-region replay the list's distinct shaped clips
(up to four) are cached against the list serial; the corner boxes in
each region are first filled with the mount-time clear colour, and a
clip stays open across the nodes under it.
- Each render core has its own clip stacks for the parallel band
  replay.

GEA_CSS_SHAPED_CLIPS (default on) compiles the shape fields and the
save/restore machinery out; off, every overflow clip is a rectangle and
a transformed box does not clip, as before. The border-ring painting for
transformed boxes is unaffected by the gate. No struct changes size;
CornerMask holds two bytes of spans per row, at most four masks of 64
rows, in apps with shaped clips only.

Desktop harness: rounded-scroll (a full-screen scroll container with
border-radius: 24px over 96 rows) about 260 us a frame where saving
every scope's corners took 8.6 ms (on this base the scene repaints at
its mount position, as on main before e8c197e); rounded-update-96 (rows
changing class under a full-screen rounded clip, the simple
dirty-region path) 44 us. Not measured on the board yet.

The text-clip mask painted the background with glyph coverage and the
text then painted over it with the same coverage, so the background bled
through every partly covered edge pixel. Glyphs with no opacity between
them and the clip owner paint over that background completely; leaving
them out of the mask removes the fringe and matches CSS, where no part
of such a background shows. Transparent and translucent text keep
showing the background as before.

columns, column-count and column-width now keep their values instead of
only whether they are set, and column-fill, column-span and
continue: discard are parsed; the fields sit in RareStyle padding. The
line-clamp shorthand, its none value and its inline removal reset
continue: discard as well.

A multicol container lays its content out as one column (the flow
thread) of the used column width (CSS Multi-column 3.4). Its column
height is the definite height under column-fill: auto, else the
shortest height that balances the flow over the columns without a
column boundary cutting a line box or an image. column-gap separates
column boxes only; it no longer spaces the content's lines.

Painting records the flow thread once and copies it into every further
column box, translated along the inline direction (from the right edge
in rtl) and up by the column heights, each copy clipped to its column's
band. The first band stays open above and the last below, so ink
crossing fragmentation edges shows, which is box-decoration-break:
slice. continue: discard drops overflow columns. A multicol container
paints its whole subtree so the copies cover it, and text-clipped
backgrounds in a copy take their glyph mask from the same copy. Node
range dirty-region replays, in-place translation and the root scroll
fast path cannot follow the copies, so a list holding them is recorded
in full.

A container with a column-span: all child keeps a single column, since
column sets are not implemented.

An app without columns pays one inline test: styleHasColumns() in
node_model.h checks column-count and column-width before the
cross-unit multicolContainer call or the rare-data lookup in isContext,
canReplayDirectDirtyRegions and recordNode. GEA_CSS_MULTICOL (default
on) gates the family and joins GEA_CSS_RARE_STYLE: off, the style
fields are static constexpr, and MulticolLayout, the column copies and
the column layout are not compiled; NodeRareData is 16 bytes smaller
(host). The analyzer and CLI do not report the family yet.
Column balancing allocates in layout, for multicol containers only.

The selector engine knew only the descendant and child combinators; a +
or ~ was read as a tag name and the rule never matched. Selector plans
now record a sibling relation per part: + requires the previous element
sibling to match the part on its left, ~ any earlier element sibling.
Text nodes and generated content are not element siblings.

Restyling follows: a class mutation restyles the siblings after the
node when it adds or removes a class used in a + or ~ selector, and
inserting, moving or removing a node restyles the siblings after its old
and new positions. Generated pseudo nodes are skipped, and so are the
children of a subtree being removed, whose siblings go next. All of it
is skipped unless some rule uses a sibling combinator.

The static selector plans generated by the geatsc build carry the same
relation, as they share the selector plan cache with runtime rules.

aspect-ratio: auto <ratio> applies the ratio to the content box whatever
box-sizing says (CSS Sizing 4); the transfer used the border box when
box-sizing was border-box. The stored ratio's sign already marks the
auto form.

A flex item's content size suggestion is now clamped by its definite
minimum and maximum cross sizes converted through its preferred aspect
ratio (CSS Flexbox 4.5): a min-height widens a row item, a max-width
caps a column item whose content is taller.

When a block formatting context contains a float anywhere, its normal
blocks, including those inside non-BFC wrappers, are placed by the float
path, which ignored auto margins: a single float left every
margin: 0 auto block in that context at the start edge. Block placement
now shares blockInlineOffset between the block and float paths, and a
block formatting context beside floats centers with auto margins in the
space between them.

WPT: unchanged (599 pass / 55 fail).

A text node that is a flex item was always ink-centred in its line
advance, a deliberate optical-centring choice for UI boxes. CSS wraps
bare flex text in an anonymous block, so it sits on its baseline exactly
like the same text in block flow; the engine drew it 1-2px lower.

Flex text items now get the baseline flag unless the container centres
them vertically (align-items/align-self: center in a row, justify-content:
center in a column), which keeps optical centring where the author asked
for centring: buttons and labels.

Evidence (simulator WPT rig):
- FAIL -> PASS at 0 differing pixels:
  css/css-flexbox/anonymous-flex-item-002.html
  css/css-flexbox/anonymous-flex-item-004.html
- Full 1,100-case run: 601 PASS, 53 FAIL, 0 BLOCKED, 446 SKIP, 0 ERROR
(previous 599 PASS, 55 FAIL); no other test changed pixel counts
- 12 native tests pass; app pipelines unchanged (same 5 known fails)

Declared and laid-out width/height were int16: `width: 40000px` wrapped
to a negative length, so a huge box scaled down by a transform lost its
content and painted as its borders alone. ComputedStyle::width/height,
LayoutBox::width/height and previous_width/height are now
layout_extent_t, bounded by kMaxLayoutExtent (2^24, exact in the float
projection math); the layout writes that clamped to int16, the flex
automatic minimum included, use clampLayoutExtent instead.

Display commands still carry int16 rects. Rather than grow every
command, recording saturates what overflows: overflow clip shapes,
untransformed overflow clip rects (both bounds) and FillRect/SetAlpha
rects clamp to the int16 range, which no screen exceeds, and a
transformed border ring whose local box passes int16 or whose ring
passes 255px paints as four transformed side quads.

GEA_CSS_LARGE_BOXES (default on) selects layout_extent_t: int32 and
kMaxLayoutExtent 2^24 when on, int16 and 32767 when off, where boxes
are int16 as before. On, Node grows by 12 bytes (+6 KB at 512 nodes);
off (host), ComputedStyle is 172 bytes instead of 176, LayoutBox 56
instead of 64 and Node 356 instead of 368.
The analyzer and CLI do not report the family yet.

Evidence (simulator WPT rig):
- FAIL -> PASS at 0 differing pixels:
  css/css-transforms/huge-length-tiny-scale.html
- Full 1,100-case run: 602 PASS, 52 FAIL, 0 BLOCKED, 446 SKIP, 0 ERROR
(previous 601 PASS, 53 FAIL); no other test changed pixel counts
- All 55 native/pipeline scripts in core/packages/core/test: 53 pass,
fixed-text-local-refresh and style-viewport-metrics fail with their
pre-existing messages; app pipelines unchanged (same 5 known fails)

wrapped-layout-96 changes the root's class every frame, and the root
class is an ancestor in selectors, so its ~290 nodes restyle. Alone the
scene takes 437 us on desktop; in the suite 2050 us, 83% of it selector
matching. The suite registers every scenario's CSS, so a row has about
180 candidate declarations (".X .row", ".X .label" of the other scenes;
each declaration of a block is its own rule), and each one walked the
ancestor chain to the root: about 52k selectorMatchesNode calls a
frame. Apps are in the same place (weather registers ~686 rules).

- Plan memo: building a node's plan matches each selector once, and the
declarations of one block share the result.
- Ancestor key filter: a subtree walk keeps the classes and tags of the
ancestors in a 512-slot counting Bloom filter, as WebKit's
SelectorFilter does. A plan whose ancestor parts are not all in it is
  rejected without the walk.
- Block skip: a selector that rejects a declaration skips the rest of
its block in one step. The filter slots of a plan and the rule flags
are computed once when the index is built.
- Signature: an id that no selector names leaves the signature (each
row-N id made its own), and a full candidate cache evicts the oldest
entry in turn (earlier screens' signatures held their slots forever).
- Shared plans: in a walk, nodes whose signatures and their ancestors'
signatures are equal pair by pair (a chain class, compared for
equality, not hashed) use one plan, so the 96 rows, labels and icons
each build theirs once. Only the outermost style recompute shares, so
a nested one cannot overwrite an entry the outer one is using.

Why the result is exact: the filter only gives false positives (a
saturated counter says maybe); the ancestor parts of a plan, except a
part matched against a sibling, must be ancestors of the node; the
filter answers only for a node whose parent is the top of the chain,
and a class or tag change (noteClassMutationForIncremental, setTagName)
turns it off until the walk ends; a candidate that looks at position,
hover or siblings is never stored for sharing; media queries do not
change during a walk. A diagnostic build ran the full suite for 240
frames, built a reference plan with the old algorithm at every plan
build and compared it rule by rule, and checked every filter answer
against direct matching: 524,924 plans (334,701 shared) and 32.6
million filter answers, 0 mismatches.

Restyles outside a subtree walk run without the filter and without
sharing; the memo and the block skip apply. Static memory is ~5.8 KB of
.bss (filter ~2.1 KB, four shared plans of ~612 B, 64 chain classes of
20 B), in internal RAM on the board; the capacities can shrink. Index
build (mutation tier): one flag byte per rule, a 3-byte memo and the
ancestor slots per plan. No allocation in the frame path; one 512-byte
memset per walk. No gate: this is the style engine's general path, not
a CSS family. No struct changes size.

Desktop harness against the previous commit, 7 rounds x 240 frames,
load ~3.5: wrapped-layout-96 2051.92 -> 392.63 us (-80.9%),
flex-layout-96 -82.0%, grid-layout-64 -72.5%, flex-layout-16 -57.9%,
dashboard-mixed-96 -57.5%, class-update, matching-sibling-update and
selector-cascade-256 -47 to -48%, box-shadow-24 -61.8%,
text-emphasis-24 -52.7%, border-image-24 -49.8%, line-clamp-24 -39.2%,
rounded-update-96 -37.2%; 29/29 same. Scenes that do not restyle stay
within +-4%, +-2.5% on a second run; horizontal-swipe +3.4% (0.08 us)
and vertical-drag +2.4% are inside their 11-12% spread and 0% on the
second run. The same path is in main and could land there on its own.
Not measured on the board yet, where matching reads nodes and rules
from PSRAM.

A small opaque fillRect read every pixel, wrote the ones that differed
and marked each differing run dirty, one markDirty (a scan of the dirty
rect list) per run. A row background whose colour toggles differs
everywhere, so its 13 rows x 410 px compared one by one were half of a
200 us flex-layout-16 frame, and text over old text paid one markDirty
per glyph stroke.

Each row now finds its first and last differing pixel and writes the
span between them with fillSpanColor, at store speed. Rows with the
same span share one dirty rect; a row without a change is still read
and skipped. The pixels are the same. The dirty rect may also cover
pixels inside the span that already had the colour; that does not
happen in the harness, where flush_pixels is identical in all 29
scenarios. Packed (e-paper) and large fills keep their paths.

Pixel tier, every app's row and card backgrounds. The worst case is an
unchanged row, read whole as before; a changed row costs two scans from
the ends and a memset-speed write. No cull changes. No gate: a general
raster path. Canvas::fillRect grows from 1728 to 2304 bytes on desktop
(64-byte alignment included; the scan loops get unrolled), to be
checked in the board build. Static checks in the default, RGBA8888,
GRAY4 (packed), rotated and rotated GRAY4 configurations: warning
counts unchanged.

Desktop harness against the previous commit, under load from Spotlight
but with the base within 1% of earlier clean runs and the candidate
within 0.5% of a second run: suite total 10497 -> 8990 us (-14.4%),
29/29 same. flex-layout-16 201.6 -> 94.3 us (-53.2%), class-update,
matching-sibling-update and selector-cascade-256 -51%,
minimal-text-12 -39.3%, rounded-scroll -39.1%, text-update -36.6%,
momentum-flick -33.7% (the scroll strips fill through here),
line-clamp-24 -26.9%; vertical-drag +0.6% (0.04 us), nothing else
above zero. In the flex-layout-16 profile fillRect falls from 110 us to
~15 us (9.5 us loop, 5.6 us memset), close to desktop store bandwidth.
Not measured on the board yet; with the framebuffer in PSRAM the old
path read every pixel from it.

treeState() is called per rule and per node in style, layout and paint
order (257 call sites). Out of line it took about 10% of a desktop
layout frame's samples. The pointer is now declared in tree_state.h and
treeState() is inline: one load and a branch, and only the first call
leaves the caller for createTreeState(), which keeps the lazy PSRAM
allocation unchanged. Initialising the pointer statically would drop
the branch but needs the state to exist before the first access, which
static initialisation order does not promise.

Static checks of tree_state.cpp, style.cpp, layout.cpp, render.cpp,
tree_render.cpp and tree_nodes.cpp in the default, new-gates-off and
refresh-perf configurations: warning counts unchanged. No other
translation unit declares treeState().

Desktop harness against the previous commit: 29/29 same, flush_pixels
unchanged, suite total 8999 -> 8870 us (-1.4%). flex-layout-96
261.7 -> 244.8 us (-6.4%), wrapped-layout-96 -6.2%, vertical-drag
-6.0%, nested-scroll -5.5%, grid-layout-64 -5.3%, almost every other
scenario -1 to -5%.

line-clamp-24 is +1.2% (372.6 -> 377.2 us; 372.8 -> 377.4 us over 7
interleaved rounds, the ranges do not overlap). Counting builds show
the same work on both sides: 388,986 textWithTransform and 213,655
measureTextLayoutForNode calls. The time goes into libc's strpbrk, the
same calls on the same text about 40% slower each, while treeState
itself drops 9.4 us in the same profile. An elimination build that
keeps text.cpp on the out-of-line call does not remove it (375.8 us),
so it is code placement elsewhere acting on the branchy strpbrk loop.
Not scanning the whole text with strpbrk/strstr on every measure and
draw (about 389k scans a suite run) would remove both this and the
scan itself.

Desktop __text grows by 4.5 KB (+0.14%, 3,291,852 -> 3,296,332 B).
Not measured on the board yet; its code size needs checking against
the flash limit.

textWithTransform scanned the text with strpbrk and strstr on every
measure and every draw to decide whether white-space collapsing would
change it: about 389k scans in one run of the desktop CSS suite, and in
line-clamp-24, 24 paragraphs long enough for the scan to show, 40 us of
a 377 us frame. The answer depends on the text alone.

NodeText::assign now computes it once (hasCollapsibleWhitespace) and
keeps it in the top bit of the pool handle, so a node stays four bytes
and reading it is one load. The paths that measure or paint a node's
text read the bit (textForNode); the draw path, which only sees the
command, gets it from the recorder in DisplayCommand::text.collapsible
along with the text's byte count. Text without a node keeps the scan:
projected labels through TextRenderer::prepareText, and the long
drawWrapped the tests call. The DrawText fields are ordered by size so
the command keeps its size in every pixel format: DisplayCommand
80/88/80 bytes and Node 368/384/364 in the default, RGBA8888 and GRAY4
builds, as before; NodeText 4.

The line-break cache keyed a text by its pointer and a hash of its
first 16 bytes. A text assigned into the same buffer with the same
prefix and a different rest hit the entry and painted the previous
text's line breaks, cutting its last line. The key is now the byte
count and the first and last 16 bytes (the whole text up to 32); the
count comes from the command, so no strlen. The desktop suite registers
no font asset and paints every text through the 8x16 bitmap path, where
the cache does not exist, so the harness cannot show the fix: a
wrapped-text-update-24 case built for it (24 wrapped paragraphs whose
text alternates between a short and a long version sharing a prefix)
compares same against a build whose cache never hits. Board apps with
TrueType fonts run that path.

Static checks of text.cpp, render.cpp, tree_state.cpp, input_render.cpp,
layout.cpp and tree_nodes.cpp in the default, new-gates-off,
refresh-perf, RGBA8888, GRAY4 and no-generated-fonts builds: warning
counts unchanged.

Desktop harness against the previous commit, 7 rounds x 240 frames:
29/29 same, flush_pixels unchanged, suite total 8871 -> 8783 us (-1.0%).
line-clamp-24 377.0 -> 333.1 us (-11.7%), minimal-text-12 -6.3%,
multicol-3 -4.1%, text-update -2.6%, rounded-scroll -2.0%,
wrapped-layout-96 -1.8%; the new wrapped-text-update-24 308.3 -> 272.1 us
(-11.7%) in a 30-case run (9211 -> 9059 us, 30/30 same). vertical-drag
+3.2% (0.21 us, base spread 37%) and horizontal-swipe +1.8% (0.04 us)
in the first run are +0.0% in the second; sticky-scroll-96 +1.9% in the
second run is -0.3% in the first with equal p95. Desktop __text grows by
512 bytes. Not measured on the board yet.

The CSS comparison had no scene for the features of geastack/core#59,
so a change to them could only say "same" by never running them.
Eleven cases, each sized like the existing list scenes:

- border-image-24, blend-mode-24, multicol-3, line-clamp-24,
box-shadow-24 and text-emphasis-24: 24 rows (12 for multicol) of the
feature; row 0 (the column container in multicol-3) toggles a class
  every frame.
- blend-modes-15: all 15 background-blend-mode values over a
translucent gradient stop, row 0 toggling a class every frame.
- sticky-scroll-96: scroll-96 with a position: sticky header, so the
difference to scroll-96 is what sticky costs the scroll fast path.
- sticky-sections-96: 32 sections of three rows, each headed by a
position: sticky; top: 0 header, scrolling back and forth between 0
and 160 px, 5 px a frame. Near the top of that range the next section
pushes the first header out, so the case reaches what a single header
never does: headers pushed and let go, and many sticky boxes in one
  scrollport.
- rounded-update-96: 96 rows under border-radius: 24px and
overflow: hidden with rows 0 and 12 changing class every frame. It
reaches the simple dirty-region replay under a full-screen rounded
clip, which rounded-scroll (scroll frames only) never does.
- wrapped-text-update-24: 24 wrapped paragraphs whose text alternates
every frame between a short and a long version that share their first
16 bytes, ending on the long one. text-update only changes single-line
nowrap labels; this case measures re-wrapping on text updates, and
with a rasterized font it reaches the line-break cache under the key
a css-fix bug lived in. The desktop suite registers no font asset, so
there it paints through the bitmap path.

Each case's check requires its update or scroll to happen. Main lacks
most of these features, so those cases DIFF there by design;
box-shadow-24 and wrapped-text-update-24 draw the same on both.

geastack/core#59 (css-fix, rebased on main) against main dae2333 on all
30 desktop cases, with the compiler 1.0.29 stack this repository locks:
two timing runs, --verify-only, --instrumented, --minimal and the
feature-profile size check. css/results/ holds the report and the raw
harness records; css/README.md links them, and prettier skips the
directory like the node results.

css-fix takes 9243 us per frame over all cases against 17218 us on
main. It is slower only where it draws a feature main lacks
(background-blend-mode, multi-column layout). With feature stripping a
box-only app is faster on css-fix, but its node grows from 72 to 104
bytes until the analyzer and CLI map css-fix's eight new families.

skyturkish and others added 14 commits October 20, 2026 20:44
The fix-loop line-clamp commits (ed5bdb7, 81feabb, be5f43c, ee9a7a6,
5346811, 8ecf111, b4f0d2a and the continue: discard part of ce3f631)
were left out of css-fix when its history was rewritten. Without the
U+2026 glyph the block ellipsis in every reference drew as "?", so most
line-clamp reftests failed by exactly 56 pixels. They are ported onto
the current API (computedStyle(), the one-argument drawWrapped, the
GEA_CSS_TEXT_EMPHASIS and GEA_CSS_LINE_CLAMP gates):

- Runtime TrueType fonts rasterize U+2026 (one more glyph per slot).
- The ellipsis goes at the last soft wrap opportunity that fits, and
keeps preserved spaces in pre text.
- The ellipsis is drawn in the style of the line's root inline box,
after the end edge of the last inline box. DrawText carries it as
BlockEllipsisStyle; the two ellipsis drawers are noinline and point
at the command's style rather than copying it.
- A preserved newline ends the line. An absolutely positioned box after
the clamp point stays while its containing block precedes or contains
  that point.
- line-clamp: <n> auto (Property::LineClampAuto, appended before Count
so existing ids keep their values).
- When clamping by height, content overflowing a block no longer
extends it. contain: size makes a block's automatic height ignore its
  content (under GEA_CSS_CONTAINMENT).
- An inline box cut by the clamp paints only its kept fragment.
- continue: discard in multicol places the ellipsis.

Two new fixes:

- A block that contains the clamp point ends there: its background and
border are painted only down to the kept content (clampBlockFragment).
layout.height is left alone so the layout memo keeps hitting; the
shorter box is one inlineParts fragment tagged kLineClampPart, which
clearLineClamp removes on every pass. Only a box that paints a
background colour or border, has no declared height and can be drawn
as a plain fragment (no radius, image, background-clip, relief,
shadow or border image) gets one.
- A block inside an inline box cut by the clamp counts with its kept
height, not its full height (LineClampWalk::clampedBlocks).

The line-clamp shorthand already writes five properties, which fills
CssCompiledValue::values. Instead of a sixth write that clears
LineClampDiscard, the LineClampAuto write clears it: only the shorthand
writes LineClampAuto, and the shorthand resets continue. No compiled
value grows.

Cost when unused: everything except the glyph, the DrawText field and
the containment check runs only inside a clamp container. Recording
DrawText writes 8 more bytes; replay passes one pointer, and the
separate style is read only when an ellipsis is drawn. The pre newline
check is behind the white_space test. contain: size costs a node-type
check and one rare-style read per View in layout. LineClampWalk's
std::vectors (open, cutInlines and the new clampedBlocks) still grow
during a clamp container's layout. That is left unoptimized for now: it
happens only in clamp containers, and only on mutation.

Sizes: DisplayCommand 80/88/80 bytes (RGB565, RGBA8888, GRAY4) as
before; the DrawText member grows from 48/56/48 to 56/64/56 and stays
inside the union. Node 368, ComputedStyle 176, LayoutBox 64 and
RareStyle 364 are unchanged. Desktop -O2 stack frames:
TextDrawer::drawWrapped 1088 -> 1104 B, TextRenderer::record
528 -> 544 B.

Static checks of rasterized_font.cpp, input_render.cpp, layout.cpp,
style.cpp, text.cpp, tree_style.cpp and render.cpp in the default
build, with line-clamp off, with containment off, with both off and
with multicol off: no errors and no undefined GEA_CSS_* macros.

Simulator WPT rig, all 1,100 tests with --force: 753 -> 865 PASS,
347 -> 235 FAIL, nothing went from PASS to FAIL. Line-clamp tests that
render without forcing: 29/95 -> 108/16. The remaining 16:
- 7 need text-wrap: balance.
- 3 (block-ellipsis-007/008/009) need ::first-line fonts.
- block-ellipsis-039 is a float pushed by the ellipsis.
- line-clamp-015 is a clamp on an inline-block.
- block-ellipsis-032, line-clamp-013, line-clamp-auto-041 and
discard-multicol-003 are not yet looked at.
Five forced tests that already failed gained differing pixels:
- block-ellipsis-030: U+1680 is not a break opportunity.
- line-clamp-with-abspos-017: its reference uses display: -webkit-box.
- line-clamp-026/027/028: +2 pixels, ruby.
The final full run predates the block-in-inline change. That change
runs only in applyLineClamp, and no test outside line-clamp uses
clamping. The line-clamp tests were rerun with this exact code.

Desktop harness, measured on 1fe1294 (css-fix with main b2b1ac1 merged;
css-fix itself does not build with the harness's compiler 1.0.37)
against the same tree with this change:
- --verify-only: 30/30 same.
- With GEA_CSS_LINE_CLAMP and GEA_CSS_CONTAINMENT flipped off in
  css_features.h: 30/30 same.
- Suite total over four runs: -0.07%, -0.00%, -0.07% (7 rounds) and
  -0.06% (21 rounds, 10636.0 -> 10629.9 us).
- 21 rounds per scenario: -1.2% (multicol-3) to +0.4%
  (sticky-scroll-96); line-clamp-24 370.96 -> 371.42 us (+0.1%).
- horizontal-swipe +4.3% and vertical-drag +1.4% in the 7-round runs
are -0.0% and -0.5% at 21 rounds (spread 10-20%, on battery).
No harness case reaches the block-fragment path: line-clamp-24's labels
paint no background or border. Desktop __text was not compared. Not
measured on the board yet.

…r grid transforms

background-clip: border-area applied only to the background colour; a
linear-gradient or image layer still painted the whole box. And a rounded
overflow clip under rotate(90deg) tried to save its whole border box
(220x220 = 48,400 px), passed kMaxSavedPixels (16,384) and silently fell
back to a rectangle.

- A linear-gradient layer clipped to the border area is recorded once
per border side that has a width: the gradient box is the whole
painting area, its bounds are that side, boundsClip = 1. No
PushClip/PopClip, because dirty-region replays skip clip commands.
Placed backgrounds (background-position/size/repeat) paint the same
  side rectangles.
- background-clip: border-area text (both keywords, CSS Backgrounds 4)
parses as clip value 5: the border area plus the layer clipped to
text. hasTextBackgroundClip and TextBackgroundClipScope treat 5 as a
  text clip.
- Under a transform that keeps the pixel grid (quarter turns, mirrors,
  scales), only the four corner boxes of a rounded clip can be exposed;
exposableBoxes maps them to the screen and saves only those.
- A pure translation is normalized to screen position when the clip
shape is recorded (overflowClipShape), so the cached corner masks are
used exactly; exactlyAxisAligned and the identity branch also require
the local box to coincide with the screen. Before, the corner boxes of
a translated clip were written back at the untranslated position.

Gates: background-clip is already in the GEA_CSS_BACKGROUND_LAYERS
family, which the analyzer reports and the CLI maps; the new layer code
is under it. gradient.boundsClip is now under GEA_GRADIENT_BOUNDS_CLIP
(GEA_CSS_BORDER_IMAGE || GEA_CSS_BACKGROUND_LAYERS). The clip fix is in
the shaped-clip path (GEA_CSS_SHAPED_CLIPS), not a new family.

Cost when unused: one command per side only on layers with clip 4 or 5;
the new record templates are noinline. recordBox checks the radial and
overlay flags before calling into them and no longer looks the clip up
twice for a colour-only box (2,432 -> 2,304 B). The translation
normalization is six comparisons on a transformed overflow box; the
grid branch runs only for transformed clips, after the untransformed
check. Worst case: quarter-turn corners are sampled per pixel (the mask
cache covers the identity mapping only), radius^2 pixels per corner,
bounded by kMaxSavedPixels; before, those clips were not applied at
all. Mirroring the cached mask for quarter turns is left unoptimized.

Known limits: with an inner radius the small sliver inside the curve is
not painted; radial gradients and transformed boxes still paint the
whole box for border-area; border-area text paints the overlap twice.

Sizes: DisplayCommand unchanged in every configuration (desktop 80,
wasm32 76; RGBA8888 88/84). With GEA_CSS_BORDER_IMAGE=0 the gradient
member grows 34 -> 36 B (40 -> 44 B RGBA8888) inside the union. Node
368, ComputedStyle 176, LayoutBox 64, RareStyle 364 unchanged. Desktop
__text +3,840 B (+0.08%).

Static checks of view.cpp, render.cpp and style.cpp in the default
build, with GEA_CSS_BACKGROUND_LAYERS=0, GEA_CSS_BORDER_IMAGE=0, both
off and GEA_CSS_SHAPED_CLIPS=0: no errors, no undefined GEA_CSS_*.

Simulator WPT rig, all 1,100 tests with --force: 865 -> 869 PASS,
nothing went from PASS to FAIL. css-backgrounds 81 -> 85; all four of
its unforced failures pass with 0 differing pixels
(border-radius-clipping-with-transform-001,
clip-border-area-border-shape, -overflow, clip-border-area-text).

Desktop harness (compiler 1.0.37), 483f222 against this change, with
two new cases, border-area-24 and transformed-clip-24 (DIFF by design:
the base paints the whole row / leaves the corners unclipped):
- --verify-only: the 30 existing cases same. With GEA_CSS_BACKGROUND_
LAYERS and GEA_CSS_BORDER_IMAGE flipped off: 31 same,
transformed-clip-24 DIFF (the clip fix is outside those gates).
- Counters identical in all 32 cases.
- 30-case total: -0.10%, +0.01%, +0.47% (load ~5) at 7 rounds; -0.67%
and -0.27% at 21 rounds. momentum-flick and horizontal-swipe moved up
to +1.3% in single runs and were -1.0% / -0.3% in the last 21-round
run; their functions are byte-identical, only moved.
- border-area-24 634 -> 296 us, transformed-clip-24 1,361 -> 1,253 us.

…btrees by their own nodes

Three layout fixes for absolutely positioned boxes in inline content:

- A block-level absolute box placed after content on its line takes its
static position on the next line at its block's inline-start edge
(CSS 2.2 10.3.7). In a right-to-left block that is the right content
edge; it was always the left one.
- An inline box whose content fits one line no longer applies
text-align inside itself: the line that holds it aligns it as a whole.
A direction: rtl span in a left-to-right line had right-aligned its
content across the whole available width, about 290px past its box.
- A contentless inline box on a line (nothing in flow, nothing painted,
no authored size) spans its font's content area (CSS 2.2 10.6.1), so a
position: relative one gives its absolute children the right
containing block. Its own pass sizes it (autosizeEmptyNode) when its
parent lays it out in lines; as a flex or grid item it is blockified
and stays empty. As before it adds no height to its line, and on a
zero-height line (9.4.2) it starts at the line's top.

Runtime TTF fonts get a weak hook, generated::runtimeTtfFontAntialiased,
true by default. When a family returns false, its glyph coverage is
thresholded at 50% once per rasterized glyph. The WPT rig uses it for
Ahem, as browser reftest harnesses do; no app font is affected.

DisplayList::translateSubtreeCommands walks the moved subtree in
pre-order instead of testing every node's ancestry. Moving a two-node
row cost a walk over all nodes and their ancestors: in the new
inline-abspos-24 case the rtl rows' contentless spans now move as
subtrees, the calls doubled (1,092 -> 2,184 in a 32-sample run, counted
with lldb) and the case ran 10% slower until this change. The clip-scope scan
over the command list is unchanged.

Cost when unused: contentlessInlineBox leaves on the node type and a
non-zero width, so text and boxes with content pay one or two loads per
line item; placeLineItems asks only on zero-height lines. The rtl branch
runs only for a block-level absolute box placed by a line. The font hook
is one weak call per rasterized glyph. No struct changed. Desktop __text
+1,280 B (+0.025%); the changed functions are the layout ones above and
translateSubtreeCommands.

Static checks of layout.cpp, render.cpp, rasterized_font.cpp and
root_scroll_refresh.cpp in the default build and with
GEA_CSS_WRITING_MODE, GEA_CSS_FLOATS, GEA_CSS_FIRST_LINE,
GEA_EMBEDDED_TTF_RUNTIME_FONTS, margins/padding/border widths,
GEA_CSS_SHAPED_CLIPS, GEA_CSS_TRANSFORMS or GEA_CSS_MULTICOL off: no
errors, no undefined GEA_CSS_*.

Simulator WPT rig, all 1,100 tests with --force: 869 -> 874 PASS,
nothing went from PASS to FAIL. css-position 44 -> 49:
static-position/htb-ltr-ltr, htb-ltr-rtl.tentative,
htb-rtl-ltr.tentative, htb-rtl-rtl and
nested-inline-abspos-child-with-siblings pass with 0 differing pixels.
The other 24 css-position failures use vertical writing modes, which
need vertical inline layout, writing-mode-aware logical properties and
vertical multicolumn fragmentation; this engine has none of them.

Desktop harness (compiler 1.0.37), ec59fa0 (the css-backgrounds
candidate) against this change, with a new case, inline-abspos-24:
rows whose label changes every frame, each with a contentless relative
span holding an absolute dot and a split span whose block-level
absolute badge takes the next line's inline-start edge; odd rows rtl.
- --verify-only: the 32 existing cases same. inline-abspos-24 DIFF by
design; frame dumps differ in that case only (2,640 px: the dots move
from the baseline to the content area's top, the rtl badges to the
  right edge).
- Counters identical in all 32 existing cases.
- 32-case total: -0.25%, +0.13%, +0.55% at 7 rounds; +0.57% and -0.00%
  (12,171.3 -> 12,170.9 us) at 21 rounds.
- wrapped-text-update-24 -2.9 to -3.1% in every run; inline-abspos-24
  315.0 -> 302.3 us (-4.0%).
- multicol-3 +0.0 to +1.9%. It runs no layout per frame and none of its
functions changed; ec59fa0 with only a 1,200-byte unused function
added to layout.cpp moves it by +2.4% and +3.2%: code placement.

…lement

Vertical flows. A vertical-lr or vertical-rl block container with inline
content or columns, whose subtree holds only elements and text in that one
writing mode, now lays out as a vertical flow (layout.cpp, VerticalFlow).
On entry its subtree turns into the logical frame: boxes, and each node's
computed style (width/height with their percentages, minimums, maximums and
expressions, overflow axes, margins, paddings, insets, auto margins, rare
side widths and margin/padding expressions; aspect ratios invert). The
horizontal block, inline, float and multicolumn code lays it out unchanged.
finish() places the out-of-flow boxes whose containing block is in the
flow, restores the styles and transposes the subtree back, marking each box
with RenderState::vertical_flow. Flex and grid containers, line clamps,
replaced content and mixed writing modes keep the previous path. A relayout
scoped to a subtree inside a flow starts from the flow's root.

Vertical text. A run in a vertical flow records one DrawText with
DrawText::vertical set (TextRenderer::recordVertical, chosen by the record
loop). The drawer breaks lines as the horizontal drawers do and paints each
as a column, glyphs turned a quarter clockwise, one drawImage per glyph
through a 256-pixel tile (one per render core). It handles the run's
rasterized font and the 8x16 bitmap fallback. No decorations, emphasis marks,
ellipses or text-clip coverage. Multicolumn clips become x bands and column
copies move across, from the right in vertical-rl.

Flow-relative properties. Stylesheet longhands such as inset-inline-start,
margin-block-end or inline-size keep their value text (no compiled value)
and map per element with its own writing mode and direction (CSS Logical
4, 2; style.cpp, flowRelativeDeclaration), and so do the pair shorthands.
writing-mode and direction are now applied in the cascade's first (metrics)
pass. Without vertical or rtl content the horizontal-tb ltr mapping is kept
as before. Inline styles and the compiler's static mapping still use it.

Horizontal corrections the same tests need:
- An absolute box's static position moves with a relatively positioned
  inline ancestor (relativeShift).
- A split inline's containing block covers the fragments of its child
inlines (recursive containsOutOfFlow; rtl extremes over the first and
last line's items) and takes the block's direction.
- Collapsible spaces that end a run hang instead of wrapping it.
- A word that continues across inline items does not split between lines
(gluedAfter), and a whitespace-only item never wraps.
- text-align start and end resolve with the block's direction
(physicalTextAlign; the ancestor walk is out of line).
- An orthogonal inline-block takes a synthesized baseline.
- An absolute vertical box with both vertical insets lays out its lines at
  that height.
- Wrapping bitmap-font text takes the bottom of its first line box as its
baseline, not its last: the items beside its first line had dropped to
its last line. One-line runs are unchanged.

Cost when unused. TreeState::verticalWritingSeen (set when a vertical mode
is applied, in TreeState padding) gates writingMode() and the flow check,
one load per layout pass. rtlSeen gates the logical mapping and the
text-align walk. The record loop, the DrawText replay wrapper and setText
each test one field per text. Registering a rule adds up to four strstr
calls on its property name. RenderState::vertical_flow shares its byte
with inline_baseline and DrawText::vertical sits in padding:
DisplayCommand 80, Node and CssRule (26) unchanged. The flow's saved
styles live in vectors shared by every flow (flows never nest), cleared
and never freed. The flow, its text drawer and its tile bank are under
GEA_CSS_WRITING_MODE; the logical mapping also serves rtl and is not.

Unoptimized: vertical text does not use the text raster cache that
horizontal lines use, so each glyph is filled into the tile and blitted on
every replay, roughly 0.1 us per glyph on desktop. Only vertical runs pay
it; a cache of turned runs is the next step if an app needs more.

Static checks of the changed files in the default build and with
GEA_CSS_WRITING_MODE, GEA_CSS_MULTICOL, GEA_CSS_SCROLLING, margins/padding/
border widths, size axes or generated fonts off, the position split, rare
style inline, shared styles and RGBA8888: no errors, no undefined GEA_CSS_*.

Simulator WPT rig, all 1,100 tests with --force: 874 -> 900 PASS, nothing
went from PASS to FAIL. css-position 49 -> 73: the 24 vertical
static-position, multicol static-position and in-multicols tests pass with
0 differing pixels, as do align-self-static-position-004 and margin-trim
flex-column-orthogonal-item. Five failing baseline-rules tests differ in
fewer pixels.

Desktop harness (compiler 1.0.37, Apple clang 17), af68095 (79cf109 with
main b2b1ac1 merged, so the compiler's runtime builds) against this change,
with a new case, vertical-text-24: 24 boxes, vertical-rl and vertical-lr
in turn and every fourth rtl, whose label changes every frame.
- --verify-only: the 33 existing cases same. vertical-text-24 DIFF by
design: the base ignores the writing mode and draws one horizontal line
per box; this change draws two columns of turned glyphs.
- Gate off (GEA_CSS_WRITING_MODE 0 in both): all 34 cases same.
- Counters identical in the 33 existing cases.
- 33-case total: -0.20%, -0.35%, -0.34% at 7 rounds; -0.30% at 21 rounds
  (12,413.6 -> 12,375.9 us).
- minimal-text-12 +0.6 to +0.9% (19.46 -> 19.63 us). It runs no layout.
The functions it runs per frame (TextRenderer::record, Tree::setText, the
DrawText wrapper, physicalTextAlign) are instruction-identical in two
candidates that measured +0.2 to +0.9% and +0.9 to +1.5%, so the swing
is code placement. The work it gains is three one-bit tests per text.
Two placement findings shaped the code: a record-time vertical branch
inside TextRenderer::record outlined blockEllipsisCommand from it, and
the walk inside physicalTextAlign made it save five register pairs on
every call (+0.2 us here). Both hooks now sit outside those functions.
- vertical-text-24 129.0 -> 181.5 us, not like for like (see above). It
  re-records no whole frame (240 -> 0) and flushes 25% fewer pixels.
- __text +19,392 B (+0.37%); +3,776 B (+0.07%) with the gate off.
Not measured on the board.

Known limits: no bidi reordering, margins do not collapse through a
vertical flow root, and absolute boxes whose containing block lies outside
a flow keep their static position only.

Background layers now paint url() images (GEA_CSS_BACKGROUND_IMAGES, on
whenever GEA_CSS_BACKGROUND_LAYERS is). A layer resolves its image once per
stylesheet through the host's asset lookup, the path <img src> takes; the
stylesheet holds a reference to each image until its compiled backgrounds are
cleared. The layer sizes the image by its natural size, contain, cover or a
length with the other side following the ratio, and records one blit per tile
inside the painting area. Tiles clip to their own bounds, because the
dirty-region replays skip the layer's clip commands. Image layers are not
clipped to rounded corners, do not blend and are not painted on transformed
boxes.

No shared struct grows. The blit commands carry the bounds flag in existing
padding: DisplayCommand stays 80 bytes, blit 32 and scaledBlit 40. RareStyle
gains an int32 image-list handle under the gate.

Images also size by their natural aspect ratio (CSS 2.2 10.3.2, 10.3.4). A
given width or height sets the other side, and a stretched flex item takes its
main size through the ratio. A block-level image keeps its natural width
instead of filling its container.

DisplayList::pruneImageReferences now looks up each run of commands that share
one pixel buffer once. Before, every command called ImageStore::idForPixels,
and each image command took the store's lock and scanned its 96 slots. With
about 300 background tiles that was 21% of the frame, and it also helps every
full-record scene.

The native test host keeps synthetic image pixels across resets. disposeAll()
keeps a referenced image until its last release, and a stylesheet's url()
images are still referenced.

Desktop benchmark: base af68095 with 51d1864, candidate with this change, two
timing runs on battery. All existing cases are same and none is above +1%.
text-update -6.5%, vertical-text-24 -5.0%, class-update, matching-sibling-update
and selector-cascade-256 -3.2%: they skip the per-command image lookup. The new
background-image-24 is +9.5% (177.6 -> 194.6 us). It is DIFF because the base
paints no url() layers and stretches the <img> to 36x16 instead of 16x16. The
remaining cost is the tile pixels. The gate-off verify has 34 cases same;
background-image-24 differs only by the <img> ratio, which the gate does not
cover. __text grows 6400 bytes, 640 with the gate off.

WPT: the complete forced run moves from 900 PASS, 200 FAIL to 920 PASS, 180 FAIL
with no regressions in conformance.

The compiled CSS pipeline cannot name an image yet. A library build inlines a
url() file as a data: URI, which the static rule registration cuts at ';', and
it rejects a gea-asset URL. The WPT rig and runtime rules are not affected.

After every full record, DisplayList::pruneImageReferences walked every command
to find the images the list still uses. It now counts the references it holds
and returns at once when there are none, which covers every scene without an
image. In the profile of table-24 the walk had taken 5% of the frame.

Measured together with the next commit (desktop, two runs of five rounds, on
AC power with 5-10% spreads): text-update -3.3%/-2.7%, class-update
-1.7%/-3.6%, matching-sibling-update -3.9%/-1.4%, vertical-text-24
-2.9%/-2.9%.

display: table and its parts (GEA_CSS_TABLES, CSS 2.2 section 17), for tables
without spans:

- Row groups are placed header first, then bodies and rows in document order,
then footers. Cells directly in a table or row group form an anonymous row,
and any other box among cells is laid out as its own anonymous cell.
- Columns take automatic widths (17.5.2.2) from their cells' min- and
max-content widths, measured as if the cell width were auto. A specified
cell width raises the maximum. A table with an auto width shrinks to fit,
and block or flex-column parents do not stretch it.
- Min-content widths are measured only when the max-content ones do not fit.
A table keeps its column measures for the rest of the layout pass, so the
scoped relayout's repositioning measures no cell again.
- Rows take their tallest cell or their specified height. Cells stretch to
their row and align their content top, middle or bottom; baseline aligns as
top. Row groups and rows span the columns.
- border-spacing and border-collapse are new properties. Collapse removes the
spacing but does not resolve border conflicts.
- Tables and their parts establish block formatting contexts, multicol does
not apply to a table, and a scoped relayout on a part moves up to its table.
- A relative offset on a part resolves percentages against its parent's
specified height, or 0 when that is auto.

Not implemented:
- inline-table;
- captions outside the table box, and caption-side;
- colspan and rowspan;
- collapsed border conflicts;
- column backgrounds;
- baseline alignment in cells;
- distributing a table's extra height;
- overflow other than hidden on a table;
- placing a table beside floats by its minimum width.

Storage: the role is one bit in ComputedStyle's display byte (ComputedStyle
stays 176 bytes, Node 368, DisplayCommand 80) plus RareStyle::table_role,
border_collapse and border_spacing_x/y under the gate. RareStyle grows from 368
to 376 bytes. A box that is not a table part pays one bit test in layout. Rows
and columns sit in fixed stack arrays (128 rows, 32 columns), and the per-pass
measures in a 4-entry static bank. Nothing is allocated.

Desktop benchmark: base 5a63a6c merged onto af68095, candidate with this commit
and the previous one. Two runs of five rounds on AC power, with 5-10% spreads
while system services ran.
- All existing cases are same. flex-layout-96 is the only one above +1% in
both runs (+1.7%, +2.7%). Alone in a one-scene suite over 11 rounds it is
  +0.8%, with spreads of 7.5% and 9.1%.
- The new table-24 has 24 rows of three cells and a label that changes length
every frame, so the table is laid out again each frame. It takes 358 us,
against 735 us for the base, which lays the same markup out as blocks; it is
  DIFF.
- Before the measures were kept per pass and the minimums taken lazily,
table-24 took 544 us: the profile showed every cell measured three times,
  twice per frame.
- The gate-off verify has all 36 cases same. __text grows 14016 bytes; with
the gate off it is within 704 bytes of the base.

WPT: the complete forced run moves from 920 PASS, 180 FAIL to 940 PASS, 160 FAIL
with no regressions.

The analyzer does not report the family yet, and the CLI does not map
GEA_CSS_TABLES. That matches the other css-fix families; wiring them all needs
one css-analysis-v20 bump.

Five changes to float placement, all in layoutFloatChildrenInContext and
collectFormattingChildren:

- A block formatting context that settles the hypothetical top of a wrapper
(its margin collapses through empty siblings into the wrapper's top, CSS
2.2 8.3.1) is first tried before its own margin, with the floats placed at
that top beside it. When they push it down, its margin is dropped like
clearance and the wrapper keeps the top without it; when it fits there,
the margin adjoins as before and the wrapper is placed again with it. This
is LayoutNG's rule, checked in Chrome: a float in an empty block followed
by an overflow: hidden box with a 300px top margin keeps the float at the
top and places the box right under it, while the same box as a direct
sibling of the float takes its margin.
- A float whose margin box has no area excludes nothing from a formatting
context, and beside a float a negative inline margin counts as zero on
both sides (Chrome's placement; CSS 2.2 9.5 leaves it open).
- A table with an automatic width shrinks to fit the opportunity beside
floats, its own layout taking the width; before it only moved down.
- A float inside a decorated inline box (padding, border or margin) is
hoisted to the enclosing block's float context, before the box when it
precedes the box's content and after it otherwise, and stored relative to
its parent. The inline box flows its other content. Undecorated boxes were
already split into their parent's list.
- Floats beside an inline run add their width to the block's max-content
  size.

Cost: a wrapper in a float context whose top collapses with its children
walks to the first descendant that settles it (a few nodes) and, when that
is a formatting context with floats before it, places its subtree twice
when the context fits beside them. An inline box with children in a block
container walks its inline descendants once for floats. No struct grows;
nothing is allocated.

Two float-context costs that predate this change go away, since the new
float-24 case made them visible (the first candidate took 4.3 ms a frame
against 2.4 ms for the base, which lays the case out wrong):

- A block whose width its parent assigns afterwards no longer measures its
max-content width in its float context: the parent sets gAssignedWidth
just before laying it out and LayoutEngine::layoutNode hands it to the
  pass. Such a block was placed three times (measure, assign, reposition);
  it is placed once.
- An inline run beside floats is laid out once, at the width the floats at
its top leave, instead of at the full width and then again. A taller
first line that meets more floats is laid out again, as before.

WPT: the complete forced run moves from 940 PASS, 160 FAIL to 947 PASS,
153 FAIL with no regressions: float-in-inline-001/002,
intrinsic-size-float-and-line, new-fc-separates-from-float and -2,
table-sizing-with-adjacent-floats and zero-width-floats pass.
new-fc-relayout still fails: line-height: 0 is stored as normal.

Desktop benchmark: base ac78a14 merged onto af68095, candidate with this
commit. Two runs of seven rounds on AC power.
- All 36 existing cases are same and within 1% in both runs (horizontal-
  swipe +2% at 13 us with 2-5% spreads). Gate-off (GEA_CSS_FLOATS 0): 36
  same.
- The new float-24 is DIFF (the base misplaces the inline float) and takes
896 us against 2574 us for the base: the two placements that went away
outweigh the hoisting and the second pass. Before them it took 4642 us.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- justify-self on a block-level box in a block container places it in the
free inline space: start, end, center, left, right, self-start,
  self-end, flex-start and flex-end, safe or unsafe (CSS Align 3, 6.1).
auto takes the container's justify-items; normal and stretch keep the
usual placement. A block formatting context beside floats aligns in the
space between them, as auto margins already did.
- The static position of an absolutely positioned box in a block container
takes the container's justify-items when its own justify-self is auto, as
a block-level box in flow would. align-items does not reach block-level
boxes, so it does not reach the block axis of the static position either.
- A block of inline content whose top a float reaches has its lines placed
in the enclosing float context, shortened by the floats beside them (CSS
2.2 9.5); before, only inline content directly in the context avoided
floats, and a paragraph after a floated image overlapped it. A block no
float reaches keeps its own row layout, so nothing else pays.
- An inline-block whose lines are clamped puts its baseline on the last
kept line, not on the last line of its text.
- A box with a zero scale renders nothing, with its subtree (CSS Transforms
2, 7: its matrix cannot be inverted); it painted at full size, so a scale
animation from 0 flashed its box. A zero z scale hides only a box outside
  a 3D rendering context: a preserve-3d box under a perspective parent still
paints its flattened subtree, as browsers do and the WPT rig's
transform-scale-z control checks. The test reads the scale from the rare
style the transformable ancestor already touches; the transform cache is
not consulted (a first version filled it for every node under a
transformed ancestor and cost 2-5% on layout scenes).

Cost: a block child in block layout reads justify-self from its rare style
(the zero entry when it has none) once per placement; nothing else runs
unless a float reaches a block, a box is absolutely positioned, lines are
clamped or a transformable ancestor exists.

Desktop benchmark, measured together with the previous commit (base
ac78a14 merged onto af68095, two runs of seven rounds): all 36 existing
cases same and within 1%; float-24 DIFF at 896 us against 2574 us.

WPT: the complete forced run moves from 947 PASS, 153 FAIL to 950 PASS,
150 FAIL with no regressions: align-items-static-position-001,
line-clamp-015 and individual-transform-3 pass. block-justify-self goes
from 21600 to 2400 differing pixels: its last red row is an absolutely
positioned 100px box whose "absolute parent" wraps to two lines in the

width: stretch and height: stretch (CSS Sizing 4, 5.1.1) are stored as the
kSizeStretch tag in the dimension expression slot, outside the intrinsic
keyword range, so every site that tests for min-content, max-content or
fit-content keeps treating the box as automatically sized.

- An absolutely positioned box with a stretch size fills its inset-modified
containing block in that axis, as a box with both insets set does; an
unset inset takes the containing block's edge, and with both insets auto
the box fills from its static position to the end edge (CSS Position 3,
3.5.1). A stretch width skips the shrink-to-fit measurement.
- A block child with height: stretch fills a definite container height less
its margins; an indefinite one leaves it auto. A block child's width
already fills; a block-level replaced box fills only when it asks to.

Cost: a block child in block layout reads one int from its style per
placement; nothing else runs without the keyword.

WPT: abspos-stretch-replaced-percentage-child passes (its stretched box
gives its replaced child's 100% height a definite basis);
abspos-stretch-indefinite-cb keeps passing.

Desktop benchmark, measured with the three companion commits together
(base 97477b1 merged onto af68095, candidate the four commits; seven
rounds a run, on battery). Runs 2 and 3: all 37 existing cases same and
within 1%, except horizontal-swipe (+1.8% and +2.8% at 14 us, inside its
8-12% spreads) and vertical-drag (+1.5% once at 39 us, inside its 6%
spread). Run 1 started on a load of 5 and moved every case by 2-7% in both
directions; it is not used. The new sizing-24 is DIFF (the base has no
baseline shift, no trimmed image margin and no stretched bar) at 285 us
against 257 and 250 us for the base. Gate-off (GEA_CSS_MARGIN_TRIM 0): 37
same, sizing-24 DIFF.

- A flex item that is an image takes its min-content size as its content
size suggestion (CSS Flexbox 4.5; CSS Sizing 4, 5.2.1): its natural size
in the main axis, or the size a definite cross size transfers through
its ratio. Before, the suggestion was zero and an image with flex: 0 0 0
and a definite height laid out at its natural width instead of the
  transferred one.
- ImageRenderer::layout takes which axes are automatic from the pass. An
axis the pass resolved stands: a length, a flex basis, or the final size
of an intrinsic keyword. width: min-content, max-content or fit-content
on an image with a definite height is the transferred width (CSS Sizing
4, 5.2.1); before, the natural width overrode every measured value.
- A replaced box displayed as a block is a block-level box of its block
container (CSS 2.2 9.2.1): it stacks among blocks, its margins collapse
with its siblings' (8.3.1) and margin-trim reaches them. It keeps its own
width (10.3.4); the other block children fill the container as before.
Before, one such image sent the whole container through the flex-like
path, where no margin collapses or trims.

Cost: blockBox adds one node-type compare for non-view nodes; the flex
minimum reads the image store once per shrinking image item.

WPT: flex-aspect-ratio-055, intrinsic-size-017, -018 and -019, and
margin-trim's block-container-replaced-block, -block-start and -block-end
pass; css-flexbox (131 tests) is unchanged.

Items with align-self or align-items: baseline that start in the same row
share that row's baseline (CSS Align 3, 9.1; CSS Grid 1, 10.3): each sits
lower by the distance from its own first baseline to the row's, measured
after the items are laid out for track sizing, and that shim joins its
contribution to an auto row. Before, baseline fell back to start, so two
fixed-height cells with inline-blocks of different heights lined up at
their tops. Last-baseline keeps the end fallback, and a vertical grid keeps
the start fallback of usedGridAlignment.

The baselines come from FlexLayoutPass::childBaseline through a probe pass
built only when a baseline item exists; a grid without one pays one
alignment read per item.

WPT: grid-align-baseline-explicit-placement passes.

- The background shorthand sets the placement longhands its layers carry
(CSS Backgrounds 3, 3.10): position, a size after the slash, repeat,
attachment and the first box as the origin. Each is compiled by its
longhand parser, with the initial value for layers that leave it out.
  Before, the shorthand reset them: `background: url(x) no-repeat center`
tiled its image from the padding corner, and the tiles around a box with
rounded corners showed at its corners.
- An image tile that covers the whole painting area of a box with rounded
corners carries the area's corner radii (the padding and content edges
take the outer radii less the edges inside them, CSS Backgrounds 3, 5.3)
and is drawn by the rounded scaled blit, in the bounded replays too.
Other tiles stay rectangular, as before.

Cost: a placed background on a box without a radius pays one flag check
per layer; a rounded one resolves its radii once per layer and its
covering tile takes the rounded blit that <img> with border-radius already
uses.

WPT: background-image-centered-with-border-radius passes; css-backgrounds
(126 tests) is otherwise unchanged.

A box with backface-visibility: hidden whose parent preserves 3D takes
part in the parent's 3D rendering context, and browsers then make it a
containing block for its positioned descendants and a stacking context
(the WPT test backface-visibility-hidden-003 names both). Before, an
absolutely positioned child of such a box resolved its insets against the
preserve-3d ancestor and painted in that ancestor's order: a green box
meant to cover its grandparent landed above the viewport and left the red
grandparent showing.

establishesTransformContainingBlock and ChildZSorter::effectGroup read the
backface bit first; a box without it pays that one test, as before.

WPT: the complete forced run moves from 960 PASS, 140 FAIL to 961 PASS,
139 FAIL with no regressions.

Desktop benchmark (base c8b9015 merged onto af68095, candidate this commit;
seven rounds a run, on battery): verify 38 same. Run 3, on an idle
machine: all 38 cases same and within 1%, except horizontal-swipe (-1.2% at
14 us, inside its 3-5% spread); transformed-clip-24, the one case with
transforms, is +0.1% with 0.2% spreads. Run 1 had transformed-clip-24 at
+2.0% and vertical-drag at -4.2% with 4-16% spreads; run 2 ran under an
outside load of 8 and moved every case by 4-20%. Neither is used. No new
gate, so no gate-off run.
