feat: add image reference support to MOSS-Image - #2203
I've called the preset "moss_variation" because it acts mainly as an image variation model: the reference mostly obliterates the prompt adherence. So the name 'moss_reference' stays available for a true edit mode / LoRA.
The with_reference1 example above is kind of a best case, because the reference and the edited images used the same model and seed; but it is possible to make bigger changes with really strong prompt weights, as in the with_reference1_vector_43 result.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.

Walkthrough
MOSS-Image now detects and configures QWEN3-VL vision support. Its conditioning path processes reference images, expands image markers, and adjusts the prompt token limit and attention-weighted range.
QWEN3.5 weight detection selects QWEN3-VL architecture and multimodal position handling. MOSS-Image visual tensor names use the existing Qwen3-VL name conversion.
Large reference images may consume excessive resources during generation. Resolve or explicitly accept that risk before merging; the logging mismatch is narrower.

Explanation
The title "feat: add image reference support to MOSS-Image" matches the main change. The raw summary shows reference-image handling for VERSION_MOSS_IMAGE, a new moss_variation preset, and Qwen3.5 vision wiring. The title is short, specific, and follows the conventional commit style.

Explanation
The description follows the template. It has a Summary that explains the reference image input, the reasoning behind the moss_variation preset name, and a link to the inspiration source. It has an Additional Information section with generation examples and sample images. The Checklist is checked. The Related Issue / Discussion section is missing. The PR objectives show related discussions (issue #1679, PR #1690, PR #1692), but the author did not link them in the description.

LOG_VERBOSE forwards its arguments to vsnprintf without type normalization or format checking. The %d conversions do not match size_t i or int64_t height and width, so this reachable call can produce incorrect log output.
The repository does not establish a supported -Wformat -Werror failure. log_printf has no printf-format attribute, and the inspected build configuration does not enable those flags for this target.

- LOG_VERBOSE("resize conditioner ref image %d from %dx%d to %dx%d", i, height, width, h_bar, w_bar);+ LOG_VERBOSE("resize conditioner ref image %zu from %" PRId64 "x%" PRId64 " to %dx%d", i, height, width, h_bar, w_bar);

Limit MOSS-Image reference-image size before VLM conditioning.
With RefImageResizeMode::NONE, resize_image_dims does not apply the 1024-pixel defaults. A 4096×4096 reference image therefore reaches encode_image_outputs at 4096×4096 and contributes 16,384 vision tokens when the factor is 32. This can substantially increase memory use and conditioning time, or cause allocation failures.

# Qwen3.5
Qwen3.5 is Qwen’s natively multimodal foundation model family, trained from scratch on interleaved text, image, and video tokens. It uses a 3:1 hybrid attention stack — three Gated DeltaNet (linear attention) layers for every one Gated Attention (full attention) layer — so long context and vision tokens can be served without paying full quadratic cost on every block.
This page covers the dense Qwen3.5 and Qwen3.6 variants (Qwen/Qwen3.5-9B, Qwen/Qwen3.5-27B, Qwen/Qwen3.6-27B). Qwen3.6 checkpoints share the same architecture and `model_type` as Qwen3.5 and are loaded with the same classes. For the sparse mixture-of-experts variants see Qwen3.5 MoE. The text backbone reuses Qwen3-Next’s linear-attention decoder with a three-component multimodal RoPE; the vision tower reuses the Qwen3-VL encoder.
Strix Halo | `Qwen/Qwen3.5-9B` | `False` | 1.33 s | 5.77 tok/s
Strix Halo | `Qwen/Qwen3.5-9B` | `True` | 1.16 s (1.15x faster) | 6.23 tok/s
* Multimodal RoPE splits the head dimension into three components (temporal, height, width) via `mrope_section` on the text config. If you replace the rotary module, preserve this split or position encodings for image and video tokens will be misaligned.
* Use Qwen3_5ForCausalLM for text-only generation with Qwen3_5TextConfig; use Qwen3_5ForConditionalGeneration with the full Qwen3_5Config and a processor (from_pretrained()) to feed interleaved image/video + text via apply_chat_template().
* Use left padding for batched generation. See Padding side.

## Qwen3.5 Highlights
Qwen3.5 features the following enhancement:
* Unified Vision-Language Foundation: Early fusion training on multimodal tokens achieves cross-generational parity with Qwen3 and outperforms Qwen3-VL models across reasoning, coding, agents, and visual understanding benchmarks.
* Efficient Hybrid Architecture: Gated Delta Networks combined with sparse Mixture-of-Experts deliver high-throughput inference with minimal latency and cost overhead.
* Scalable RL Generalization: Reinforcement learning scaled across million-agent environments with progressively complex task distributions for robust real-world adaptability.
* Global Linguistic Coverage: Expanded support to 201 languages and dialects, enabling inclusive, worldwide deployment with nuanced cultural and regional understanding.
* Next-Generation Training Infrastructure: Near-100% multimodal training efficiency compared to text-only training and asynchronous RL frameworks supporting massive-scale agent scaffolds and environment orchestration.

Use Qwen3.5 multimodal RoPE for MOSS-Image reference images.
MOSS-Image now reaches the Qwen3.5 vision path for ref_images, but QWEN3_5 still uses ggml_rope_ext with one sequential position per token. Qwen3.5 uses interleaved three-component RoPE with sections {11, 11, 10}. Its image tokens require temporal, height, and width coordinates.
Update the attention RoPE and the position layout together. Do not apply a position-only change.

Review comment at @src/model/te/llm.hpp at line 390:
Update the QWEN3_5 attention RoPE path to use interleaved three-component RoPE
with sections {11, 11, 10}, and update the image position layout so ref_images
receive temporal, height, and width coordinates. Make both changes together; do
not change only the position layout.

We retain a dedicated reference-index axis 𝑟 to allow future extensions to reference-conditioned generation. In the current setting without reference inputs, all tokens use 𝑟 = 0, so its associated feature subspace remains unrotated, while the other axes encode sequence and spatial positions. This supports more references without changing the positional encoding.
This is only mildly related.
Also calling it variation isn't the right way IMHO.
I think we should introduce a generic way to include images in prompts, rather than adding image-prompt construction specifically for MOSS.
For example, a marker such as <image:path/to/image.png> could specify where an image appears within the prompt. A shared parser could turn the prompt into an ordered sequence of text and image inputs, while each supported multimodal LLM handles its own image encoding, special tokens, and position IDs.
This would support interleaved text and multiple images through a common interface reusable across models, with MOSS as one consumer. The existing ref_images behavior could remain compatible with editing workflows.
Also calling it variation isn't the right way IMHO.
I'm open to suggestions; I just don't want to make it sound "too official" right away.
Heh, yea naming is hard. In the pipeline are various "embedding" or references.
img -> vit/vision-tower -> llm -> layer-extracted-embedding . Future edit finetunes might put it as vae latents in the condition context etc.

Summary
Adds basic reference image input to MOSS-Image, leveraging Qwen 3.5 vision support.
I've called the preset "moss_variation" because it acts mainly as an image variation model: the reference mostly obliterates the prompt adherence. So the name 'moss_reference' stays available for a true edit mode / LoRA.
Inspired by https://github.com/ThetaCursed/ComfyUI-MOSSImageTextEncoder .
Additional Information
The
with_reference1example above is kind of a best case, because the reference and the edited images used the same model and seed; but it is possible to make bigger changes with really strong prompt weights, as in thewith_reference1_vector_43result.Checklist
