Problem

m1 mixed release correctness with optional features, experiments, and maintenance of the existing release. Stale prose and broad prerequisites also reintroduced deferred work as hidden gates.

Approach

Move 33 quest documents with their references: 3 maintenance quests to m0 and 30 feature/optimization quests to m2. Preserve the CDN/relay diagnosis completions that landed concurrently; their remaining Stitcher smoke follow-up belongs in m0. Also preserve the concurrently completed shard-steering and opaque-catalog quests. Keep release execution first in m2. Separate the main qmux pin from its old-release backport, narrow the federation guide, and reconcile stale identity, archive compatibility, browser identity, transport-test, and publication plans.

Maintainer decisions from the audit:

Decision prompt Selected option
Release scope ✅ Minimum safe breaking release; consider major features individually
1. P2P ✅ Punt the complete feature and prerequisites to m2
2. Watch worker ✅ Punt planning and implementation after explanation
3. AMD/Intel GPU input ✅ Punt implementation and multi-vendor publication
9. QoS lag and prefix stats ✅ Punt together
10. Active-active same-epoch importers ✅ Punt with epoch anchor and raw TS cuts
Other major features ✅ Keep takeover on lite/IETF, IETF passthrough, public model audit, broad clock conversion, endpoint sharding, archive correctness, and TS fidelity in m1
Existing-release maintenance ✅ m0 for lite SETUP backport, Kotlin POM publication, CDN smoke, and relay smoke
Independent optimization/experiments ✅ m2 for benchmark site/docs, C++ FFI reuse, rendition preference, BoltFFI/generator fork, payload bytes, binding benchmarks, Kotlin call performance, and poll-native spike
Audit workflow ✅ Apply fixes and settled decisions, remove the read-only requirement upstream
Delivery ✅ Create PRs, complete quest-merge, and include necessary cleanups

Impact

  • No runtime, public API, or wire changes. This changes priorities and records the existing contracts more accurately.
  • No m1 Required dependency reaches m2 or m3. Deferred features retain their validation requirements.

Alternatives

Keeping every potential API break in m1 would make independent features block the release. Dropping correctness validation would weaken the retained features; their proofs remain required.

Follow-ups

The upstream audit fix landed in kixelated/quest#131. Pin Quest to fa5f1fc9b49c8e7f5dd85af1aabead22f681ec01 and refresh the audit stub. This also adopts intervening upstream CLI/workflow improvements, including quest wait and ready-work ranking. Existing quest implementations remain open, including the newly separated qmux release backport and final C publication condition.

Validation: full just check passed in the pinned Nix shell, including the C++/OBS and flake checks selected by the pin update. quest check validates the tree; repository-wide stale-path search and Required-graph traversal pass. The pinned quest skill audit serves the corrected workflow. For local validation, disable the local Codex BASH_ENV bootstrap to prevent recursive temporary-directory nesting.

Walkthrough

The pull request revises quest milestone scopes and required-work lists, updates individual quest plans and their cross-references, and changes the pinned quest flake input. The documents now distinguish m1 work from deferred m2 work in areas including P2P, GPU support, QoS, archive compatibility, and transport streams. Several plans also clarify test requirements, release prerequisites, and responsibilities between related quests.

Automated review by review (OpenAI)

Reviewed commit: cd5003b

No new actionable bugs found. The independent stats, P2P, and qmux scope descriptions are corrected. The reviewed quest graph has no broken root-relative targets, Required cycles, or transitive m1 dependencies on m2/m3; the latest ordering keeps prefix stats ahead of QoS.

Direction: separating current-release maintenance, the bounded next cut, and deferred features is coherent with the stated decisions, without removing retained validation requirements. The Quest revision matches across flake.nix and flake.lock, and the audit stub consistently requires audit-and-fix intent.

Verification: GitHub-only source/graph review within moq-dev/moq. I did not independently inspect the external Quest revision or NAR hash, execute builds/tests, or verify external publication claims. Exact-head CI remained queued/running when inspected.

Applied the maintainer's release-scope choices: defer P2P, watch worker, AMD/Intel GPU input, QoS/prefix stats, and redundant same-epoch importers; retain the other major m1 features and their validation. Move current-release maintenance to m0 and independent experiments/optimizations to m2. Reconcile stale plans and dependencies, and pin the merged audit workflow fix from kixelated/quest#131.

All three review findings are corrected and replied to. The independent review of cd5003b found no new actionable issues. The subsequent merge only reconciles already-reviewed main changes and removes completed quest work; it preserves the agreed deferred scope. Full local just check passes on 34dedc8, and quest check validates 454 documents. No MoQ public API or wire changes.

Enabling auto-merge for that full head SHA, subject to required CI and the merge queue, as requested.

Automated review by review (OpenAI)

Reviewed commit: 5f0af16

No new actionable bugs found. The latest substantive planning fix makes AudioToolbox unconditionally own the shared zero-or-more output/flush seam needed by MediaCodec, addressing #5679 (comment). The remaining STUN and lag-sampler descriptions now consistently defer both to m2 (4291284654 and 4291284660). Earlier stats/P2P/qmux findings remain fixed.

Direction: explicit shared API ownership removes the satisfied-prerequisite gap while preserving deferred validation requirements. Intervening main merges and completed-quest removals do not warrant separate findings.

Verification: incremental GitHub source review against the last published review, accounting for base merges. No tests or builds executed; external repositories and publication claims were not inspected.

Merged current main into the branch and resolved the two conflicts by aligning quests:

Main's other completed quests (switch, ts-drift-startup, time/js-migrate, auth-serve-signals, rs2ts/spike) stay deleted. Main's edits to quests this PR moves (p2p/harness, p2p/udp-demux) merged cleanly into their m2 paths. quest check passes (438 documents). No dangling /quest/ links remain. No m0/m1 Required entry points into m2/m3. The quest pin is still newer than main's.

Scope is unchanged: 3 maintenance quests move to m0 and 30 feature/optimization quests move to m2. The open PRs #5717, #5718, and #5719 touch moved quests and will rebase onto these paths. Codex reviewed head 802a555e4 and found nothing.

Drop the completed hard-fork entry from m1 (#5728), describe the in-tree
QUIC stack instead of the switch, and note that the relay seam abstracts
over the server types #5664 left.

Main moved again (#5728, #5719, #5704), so I merged it a second time:

quest check passes (434 documents). No dangling /quest/ links remain, and no m0/m1 Required entry points into m2/m3. Codex reviewed head 52adc2ae1 and found nothing.

Merged main a third time. The only conflict was in quest/m1/import-declared-track.md. #5692 finished dropped-internal, so I dropped that Related link and kept the same-epoch importer link at its m2 path. quest check passes (435 documents). There are no dangling links, and no m0/m1 Required entry reaches m2/m3. Codex reviewed head 0201053b5 and found nothing.

Take #5709's Moxygen interop summary; the Stitcher smoke stays in m0.

Main moved during the queue run, which made the entry unmergeable, so I merged it twice more:

quest check passes (429 documents). There are no dangling links, and no m0/m1 Required entry reaches m2/m3. The diff since 0201053b5, which Codex reviewed with no findings, contains only these merge resolutions.

Check failed on the CI merge ref. The new quest/m1/ts-reliability/pes-import.md on main links /quest/m1/epoch-anchor.md, which this PR moves to m2. I merged main and repointed that Plan link to /quest/m2/epoch-anchor.md. The epoch anchor is not in that quest's Required, so no m1 work now waits on m2. quest check passes (429 documents).
