Completes quest/m1/quic/shard.md (deleted here, with its references). Sharding stays opt-in. Flipping the relay default waits on a saturating benchmark, tracked in the new quest/m2/perf/shard-default.md quest.

What changes

  • moq-quic names the shard itself. RandomConnectionIdGenerator::set_shard(index, count) starts every CID with a byte congruent to index mod count, which is the byte the SO_REUSEPORT filter reads. It also sets fix(sock): steer only recognizable QUIC packets #5638's non-SRT marker (0x18 in the fourth byte), which the filter checks on short headers. This replaces moq_sock::shard::cid and its wrappers (moq-tokio's ShardIdGenerator, moq-uring's Cids), so one generator owns the whole encoding.
    • The encoding is the same as fix(sock): steer only recognizable QUIC packets #5638's. Every other bit stays random, about 54 bits per shard, so a client that steers every connection to one shard can't exhaust its IDs.
    • validate refuses a CID without the shard's prefix or the marker. A stray packet is dropped instead of drawing a stateless reset for a connection that a sibling owns.
  • moq-sock forms the group in one call. shard::bind(addr, count) -> Bound replaces Group / Member / Claim. Both runtimes ran the same acquire/bind/complete loop on one thread, so the cross-thread ordering machinery and its out-of-order checks are gone. The port lock, the bind probe and fix(sock): steer only recognizable QUIC packets #5638's BPF filter are unchanged.
  • moq-tokio's worker group shrinks. SocketRetainer is gone, since Bound already keeps every member socket in the kernel array.
  • A stopped worker sends its closes. A worker used to drop its runtime as soon as it was told to stop, and the endpoint driver went with it. Any close still queued, such as a drain's abort, never reached the wire, so the peer only noticed at its idle timeout. The shared server avoids this by awaiting Listener::close. Each worker now closes its endpoint and waits for every connection to send its close before the runtime drops. This surfaced as moq-cli's fails_when_the_session_ends timing out in CI while test relays ran on workers.
  • Workers default to unpinned. runtime.pin and moq_tokio::worker::Config::new now default to off. Every group pins worker i to the ith core, so two groups on one host would crowd onto the first cores, and so would one limited to fewer CPUs than the host has. Pinned and unpinned runs were already within noise.
  • Benchmark. just bench-shard [SHARDS] [CONNECTIONS] sweeps the shard count (0 = the shared runtime) against the connection count, for the room (video) and fanout workloads. It reports CPU per connection, so a cost that grows on either axis shows up as a slope. It runs nightly.

Public API and wire impact

  • moq-quic: adds RandomConnectionIdGenerator::set_shard, whose validate checks the shard's prefix and marker. HashedConnectionIdGenerator is unchanged from upstream.
  • moq-sock (breaking):
    • removes shard::{Group, Member, Claim, cid, CID_LEN};
    • adds shard::bind and shard::Error::{Bind, Steer};
    • moves rand to dev-dependencies.
  • moq-uring (breaking): removes quic::endpoint::CID_LEN. Endpoints still issue 8 random bytes, sharded or not.
  • moq-tokio (behavior): worker::Config::new(count) is unpinned; with_pin(true) restores pinning. No signatures change.
  • moq-relay (behavior): runtime.pin defaults to false. runtime.workers is unchanged: unset or 0 keeps the shared runtime.
  • Wire:
    • No MoQ wire change, and QUIC CIDs stay 8 bytes.
    • The CID layout is unchanged from main: a sharded CID is the prefix, random bytes, and the marker in byte 3; an unsharded one is 8 random bytes (moq-uring) or quinn's hashed CID (moq-tokio, as before).

Tests

  • moq-quic: a shard CID reduces to its shard at every group size up to 256, carries the non-SRT marker and validates. Shards refuse each other's CIDs and CIDs without the marker, and out-of-range shards or CIDs too short for the marker panic. A shard of a 256-way group keeps 54 varying bits, and an unsharded CID keeps all 64.
  • moq-sock: the existing tests run against bind: steering (short, v1, v2), non-QUIC flows, overlap, ephemeral ports and retention. A reuseport address that is already held is refused with AddrInUse instead of being joined. Off Linux, a group is refused with Unsupported.
  • moq-tokio: stopping_the_group_closes_its_sessions checks that a client with a 600s idle timeout sees the close within 5s of Group::shutdown. It fails without the worker close.
  • moq-relay: the existing worker and io_uring relay tests pass, and they can only pass if the generator's encoding matches the filter.

Benchmark

just bench-shard ran on a 24-core shared host at load average 24 to 52, so the numbers are noisy. At these loads the relay never uses even one full core, so the sweep shows no cost growing with either axis, but it also can't show the multi-core win. That gap is why the default stays shared.

workload conns shared CPU 1 shard 4 shards 16 shards
video 16 0.092 0.071 0.100 0.114
video 256 0.946 0.737 0.837 0.970
fanout 16 0.022 0.016 0.020 0.025
fanout 256 0.169 0.171 0.165 0.201
  • Throughput, fps and loss match across all shard counts. Loss is 0 everywhere.
  • 16 shards costs about 15 to 25% more CPU than the shared runtime at low load, from the idle per-core runtimes.

Decided

  • Sharding stays opt-in, and the default flip is a follow-up quest.
  • runtime.pin is off by default, and worker::Config matches it.
  • The CID encoding lives in moq-quic's generator, while moq-sock's filter reads it.
  • moq_sock::shard::Error::{Bind, Steer} are public.

…batim

Unmodified copies, not yet compiled, so a reviewer can diff the adaptation
that follows against upstream:

- quinn-rs/quinn 7616e6b2782722f3ce4a1b181ef08817d7f545e4 quinn/src ->
  rs/moq-tokio/src/quic/driver (lib.rs -> mod.rs), the commit moq-quic
  forked from.
- moq-dev/noq e27c0ce00741d81c8620b98e345d4f2c88e0768c web-transport-moq/src ->
  rs/moq-tokio/src/quic/web (lib.rs -> mod.rs).

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Drop every moq-noq dependency. moq-tokio's QUIC backend now drives moq-quic
through quinn's async layer (`quic::driver`) with web-transport-moq folded in
as `quic::web`; moq-uring's sans-IO driver moves from moq-noq-proto to
moq-quic. Upstream noq stays only behind moq-tokio's `iroh` feature.

- The `noq` cargo feature is `quic` everywhere it was forwarded.
- `moq_tokio::noq::Error` is `moq_tokio::quic::Error`; `Error::Noq` is
  `Error::Quic`.
- moq-quic takes `moq_clock::Instant` and raises a once-per-connection
  Draining endpoint event, which backs the driver's `wait_all_draining`.
- qlog writes one trace per endpoint (per dial on moq-uring's connect side),
  since moq-quic holds one sink per transport config.
- Session stats report the congestion controller's bandwidth estimate.

The capsule reader maps a lost stream to UnexpectedEnd, so every ordinary
session close warned "failed to read capsule". A read error while the
connection is closed is now debug; one on a live connection still warns.

Relay peak RSS on the fanout workloads matches moq-noq on origin/main, which
was the last open part of the Goal.

moq-quic now issues shard-naming connection IDs itself
(HashedConnectionIdGenerator::set_shard), replacing the custom generators
in moq-tokio and moq-uring, and refuses a sibling shard's IDs so a stray
packet is dropped instead of reset. moq_sock::shard::bind forms a steered
group in one call, replacing the Group/Member/Claim API both runtimes looped
over, and moq_sock::shard::per_core picks the default size. The relay runs
one QUIC worker per core on Linux unless runtime.workers says otherwise
(0 keeps the shared runtime), and runtime.pin now defaults off.

Adds `just bench-shard`, a shard-count by connection-count sweep, nightly.

Carry #5638's steering changes onto the renamed moq-quic drivers: the
shard CID comes from moq_sock::shard::cid, and moq-uring stops greasing
the QUIC bit on sharded endpoints.

Endpoint::close now refuses attempts still queued for accept, and
wait_all_draining waits for accepts partway through Incoming::accept, so
a server shutdown cannot release the socket before those peers hear back.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Takes #5638's shard steering: the 18-instruction filter that steers only
v1/v2 long headers and marked short headers, its non-QUIC flow test, and
no QUIC-bit grease on sharded endpoints. moq-quic's
HashedConnectionIdGenerator::set_shard now sets the non-SRT marker
(0x18 in the fourth byte, the signature's first) that the filter checks,
replacing moq_sock::shard::cid and CID_LEN.

The server socket retried every failed recv, so a persistent error spun
the endpoint task while tokio kept readiness asserted. Only WouldBlock
retries now, matching the driver's tokio runtime.

Also cap moq_quic at info like noq was, fix the driver doc example, and
point the moq-uring README at the just recipe.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A worker broke out of its loop and dropped its runtime, and the endpoint
driver with it, so any close still queued (a drain's abort, a dropped
listener) never reached the wire and the peer waited out its idle
timeout. The shared server avoids this by awaiting Listener::close.
Each worker now closes its endpoint and waits for every connection to
send its close first.

Sharding by default put every test relay on workers, which is how
moq-cli's fails_when_the_session_ends started timing out in CI.

Main now carries the moq-quic switch as squash ef21a30 (#5664), with
content identical to the switch branch this one was stacked on, so each
conflict resolves to this branch's side.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
#5728 deleted quest/m1/quic/fork/README.md and the shard quest's fork
blocker; this branch completes the shard quest, so both stay deleted.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The maintainer kept sharding opt-in until a saturating sweep justifies
the flip, tracked in quest/m2/perf/shard-default.md. An unset
runtime.workers is the shared runtime again, and moq_sock::shard::per_core
goes with the default that used it.

runtime.pin and moq_tokio::worker::Config::new now default to unpinned:
every group pins worker i to core i, so two groups on a host, or one
limited to fewer CPUs than the host has, crowd onto the first cores.

Walkthrough

The change adds shard-aware QUIC connection IDs and replaces staged reuseport group setup with direct binding. Worker shutdown now closes and drains QUIC connections. Relay and worker pinning defaults change to off. A Linux-only benchmark sweeps shard and connection counts for video and fanout workloads, with a nightly workflow and performance quest documentation.

HashedConnectionIdGenerator::set_shard overwrote the first of its three
nonce bytes with the shard prefix, so a 256-way shard had only 65,536
CIDs. A client picks the Initial's destination CID and can steer every
connection to one shard, and once that shard's CIDs are taken,
Endpoint::new_cid spins forever. moq-uring's unsharded endpoints had
also dropped from 8 random bytes to the hashed generator's 3.

set_shard moves to RandomConnectionIdGenerator, which keeps every bit
but the prefix byte and the two marker bits random (about 54 per shard),
the same encoding #5638's moq_sock::shard::cid issued. Its validate
refuses a CID without the shard's prefix or the marker, so a stray
packet is still dropped rather than reset. HashedConnectionIdGenerator
returns to upstream, and moq-uring issues random CIDs sharded or not.

The relay config doc no longer says a worker's packets never cross
cores: they stay on one thread, and runtime.pin keeps it on one core.

Brings in reliable reset (#5690) and per-core sharding (#5688).

A reset stream with a Reliable Size now stays in its send group's
schedule for just the data below that size, and leaves the schedule as
soon as nothing is left to send: on reset, on STOP_SENDING abandoning the
prefix, and on removal once the reset is acknowledged. The schedule still
holds only streams with something to send, so the write loop and
can_send_stream_data need no reset special case.
