feat(js/net): list a broadcast's tracks over lite-07 TRACKS - #6158
Conversation
broadcast.Consumer.tracks() reports each track with its info, one synced, then adds and removals until the broadcast ends, mirroring Rust's broadcast::Consumer::tracks. A session opens one TRACKS stream per consumed broadcast while it has readers and answers a peer's TRACKS for a broadcast it publishes with the tracks its producer created. Older versions reset the stream type, a covering prefix route answers NOT_FOUND, and listed tracks count toward the announce cap. Adds Rust/JS interop for the Tracks Stream in both directions and retires the tracks-js quest. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…rigin A route claiming a prefix names no broadcast, so the handle a dynamic route serves beneath its prefix lists nothing: tracks() throws NotFound on it and every clone, and an epoch-pinned front serving it aborts its listing with NotFound, as Rust's front does. Local reads now match sessions, and the publisher's separate covered() check is gone. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Yield while draining TRACKS events
A hostile peer can send an arbitrarily long sequence of alternating TRACKS_ADD/TRACKS_REMOVE events for one name, so the announce cap never fires while this loop repeatedly consumes already-buffered reads through the microtask queue. Unlike the Rust receiver's cooperative budget, this path has no task-boundary yield; a large WebSocket/QMux chunk can therefore monopolize the browser event loop and multiply work across every local listing reader. Poll a cooperative Budget before processing each event, as other backlog-sensitive paths do.

Agreed. Fixed in c7eb3f5: the receive loop polls a cooperative Budget before each event, as stream writes do. The new regression test a flood of a peer's listing churn yields to the host's tasks buffers 20,000 add/remove pairs of one name in a single chunk. It fails without the poll.

A peer can buffer an unbounded churn of adds and removals of one name, which never reaches the announces cap and decodes without a task boundary. Poll a cooperative budget before each event, as stream writes do, so the flood cannot starve the host. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Close the session when TRACKS carries trailing data
When a peer appends data after the sole TRACKS request, reader.done() resolves false, but this callback only aborts the stream and then cancels the operation with Cancel. Since runTracks catches that cancellation internally, the surrounding #runBidi rejection handler never calls closeViolation, so the malformed peer keeps the session and can repeat the violation. Propagate the ProtocolViolation to the connection or close the session here.

Agreed. Rust closes the session here too. Fixed in e97b166: trailing bytes now close the session with ProtocolViolation, and the new test data after a TRACKS request closes the session covers it. The TRACK (0x6) answer path has the same pre-existing shape. It is outside this PR, so I'm leaving it as a follow-up.

Close the request half after a clean listing FIN
When the peer cleanly FINs a TRACKS response, this branch ends the local listing but returns without closing stream.writer. The publisher is waiting on its request reader to finish, so the bidirectional stream remains half-open and retains stream credit and its pending reader.done() state; a peer that repeatedly ends listings for different broadcasts can eventually exhaust available bidirectional streams and make later requests time out. Close the request half before returning, as the other completed bidirectional request paths do.

Agreed. Fixed in e97b166: a listing the peer FINs now FINs the requester's half too. The existing session test now waits for that FIN, and it times out without the fix.

…ed listing Bytes after a TRACKS request are a protocol violation that closes the session, as in Rust, rather than only resetting the stream. A listing the peer ended with FIN now FINs the requester's half too, so the stream does not linger half-open holding stream credit. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Discard results from a replaced listing source
When an epoch-equivalent route takes over while the old source's pending next() settles, this race can return the old result even though #changed has fired. The code then applies that stale result without rechecking listing.source !== this.#source, so an old source's FIN or error can finish or abort the front's listing after the new source is already serving it. Recheck the source after the await and discard the result when it was replaced.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.

Valid, fixed in 9d87824: after the race settles, #list now drops the result when listing.source !== this.#source, so the new source's listing supersedes it. The regression test a listing follows the source that took over as the old one's listing {fails, ends, changes} in js/net/src/resume.test.ts triggers the takeover from the moment the old source's listing settles; all three cases failed before the fix (the front's listing aborted, ended, or showed the old source's add).

Refuse compressed TRACKS entries before publishing metadata
When a lite-07 peer sends TRACKS_ADD with info.compress === true, this path accepts the event and passes it through #toModelInfo, which drops the compression flag. Local readers and downstream peers therefore see the track advertised as uncompressed, even though the same subscriber explicitly rejects it when opening the TRACK stream at #trackInfo. Reject the listing entry as unsupported, or represent compression in track.Info, instead of publishing incorrect immutable metadata.

Valid, fixed in 31a04c3. Until js/net inflates (quest carries compress into Track.Info), a peer's TRACKS_ADD with compress now fails that listing the same way a compressed TRACK_INFO fails its subscription: the listing's readers get "compressed tracks are not supported", the TRACKS stream is reset, and the session stays. Omitting the entry would have hidden unsupported input. Regression test: a listing naming a compressed track is refused, and the session stays in js/net/src/lite/tracks.test.ts.

Main's #6230 makes js/net read and write compressed lite-07 tracks, so the listing carries compression instead of refusing it: TRACKS_ADD answers the same TRACK_INFO as a TRACK stream, compression included, mirroring Rust's TrackInfo::serve. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

A listing opened the peer's TRACKS stream without the gate subscriptions pass: it never waited for an in-band token that could cover the broadcast (so the peer refused it), never checked our grant, and outlived a grant that stopped covering it. Both the JS and Rust subscribers now wait for the token before syncing readers or asking the peer, refuse a broadcast outside the grant with Unauthorized, and reset a live listing with UNAUTHORIZED once the grant shrinks, leaving the session up. Cancel listings when their selected instance retires
When a no-epoch announcement is replaced while this listing is blocked on an unanswered token, the wait is tied only to the session close, unlike subscribe and fetch setup, which use consumed.valid. Once the token settles, #listTracks sends a TRACKS request without an epoch, allowing the peer to answer from the replacement publisher and causing the old cached Consumer to report a different broadcast instance's tracks. Use the consumed instance's validity signal to cancel setup before opening the stream.

Valid, fixed in 86558ab. Until the TRACKS request is out, a listing now follows the consumed instance's validity, as track setup does: the token wait and the stream open are cut short when it retires, and a retired instance fails its listing with Unroutable instead of asking the peer. The Rust TracksRecv had the same gap and now checks RequestValidity (captured with start()) until its stream opens.
Regression tests, each failing without the fix: a listing of an epochless handle retired while its token waits never reaches the wire (js/net/src/lite/subscriber.test.ts) and a_listing_of_a_retired_instance_never_reaches_the_wire (rs/moq-net/src/lite/subscriber.rs).

A TRACKS request names no epoch for an epochless route, so a listing set up on an instance that was replaced while it waited for its token would list the replacement's tracks. Until the request is out, both the JS and Rust subscribers now check the consumed instance's validity, as track setup does, and fail the listing with Unroutable once it retires. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The unused watch is armed after the auth wait, and a signal subscription does not replay its value, so readers leaving in that gap went unseen and the listing opened TRACKS for nobody. Recheck after the wait. The docs now say a session listing syncs with what this side holds, as tracks() does. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Keep validity active through TRACKS request encoding
If the outgoing stream opens but either request write is flow-control-blocked, an epochless route can retire before these unguarded awaits complete; valid then aborts, but the code still sends TRACKS and the peer may answer from the replacement broadcast, mixing a different instance into the cached consumer. The follow-up guards only Stream.open; the fresh evidence is that both request writes occur after that guard without untilAborted or a validity recheck. Keep the validity cancellation active until the complete request is written and abort the stream if it fires.

Stop the request half when a TRACKS response ends
When the broadcast ends while a hostile requester leaves its send half open, this only FINs the response; the pending reader.done() callback retains the receive half and the bidirectional stream never fully closes. Repeating this with broadcasts whose listings end lets the peer retain stream state and exhaust its remote-initiated bidirectional stream credit. Close both halves on a clean end with stream.close() and likewise abort both halves on failures.
