feat(mux)!: TS export follows by cause, and --linger is --follow - #6656
container::ts::Follower now follows publisher instances through moq_mux::follow::Instances, the way moq play, moqsrc, and transcode already do, instead of watching the path's announcements and resolving each return itself.
--follow (was --linger) only bounds how long the export waits for a publisher after the broadcast ends. A stitched replacement's first catalog is awaited until it arrives or the replacement goes, with no deadline of its own. So --stitch --follow 0s now switches to a cold remote replacement, and during a mid-stream switch the old instance keeps playing until the replacement's catalog is subscribed.
CLOSE_GRACE (1 s) is gone. A track failure is classified by its cause:
The publisher left: Unroutable (what a moq-lite relay resets a copy with once its upstream session ends, since #5729), a session or transport error, or an unregistered moq-transport code (see Decisions). The follower follows.
Anything else, such as a codec TS cannot carry, Cancel, or MalformedTrack, is the export's own failure and exits right away.
If an instance ends before its catalog delivers a first snapshot, it never served. A return carries on waiting until the original deadline. A mid-stream switch fails.
Publishers that go offline now end their open tracks with a cause the follower accepts. Before, several paths dropped tracks unfinished, which readers see as Dropped (Internal on the wire) and the follower took as a failure:
moq-cli: on a shutdown signal, or when any stage ends, the MoQ side detaches before the stages drop. Before, an interrupted moq import dropped its tracks while its session was still up, and the relay passed not found / internal on to readers. That made just rs cli-export fail 2 of 14 (a_restarted_publisher_*). Now the tracks end with the session, which a relay reports as Unroutable. This covers every stage: stdin, capture, rtsp, hls, archive, and the --connect gateways.
moq-rtmp: a hangup without an unpublish finished the media but dropped the catalog. A failed publish aborted the media but also dropped the catalog. Now the catalog finishes on a hangup and aborts with the same cause on a failure (server and dial).
moq-rtc: a WHIP/WHEP ingest whose peer disconnects, or whose offer never connects, left its tracks to drop, and every abort skipped the catalog. Now any end other than a DELETE aborts the media and the catalog with the session's cause.
moq export ts --linger is now --follow, and export srt takes the same flag. The released spelling on export ts stops the run with --linger -> --follow. The other stdout formats keep their hidden --linger only so they can refuse a nonzero value, and the refusal now points at export ts --follow.
Docs: doc/bin/cli.md (it now also says a return routed through a dead session is no return, rather than an exit with that session's error), doc/bin/srt.md, doc/setup/redundancy.md, and the unreleased moq-cli MIGRATE.md entry.
Impact
moq-mux (breaking): container::ts::Follower::with_linger is now with_follow, and it bounds only the wait after an end. Migrate: rename the call. A stitched replacement no longer fails when its catalog misses that bound, so drop any retry you built around that error. A non-route failure now fails at once instead of after 1 s.
moq-srt: Subscribe::with_follow and Client::with_follow (renamed in #6636) no longer bound a stitched replacement's first catalog. Only the docs changed.
moq-cli (breaking): moq export ts --linger is now --follow. Migrate: rename the flag; the old spelling stops the run. moq export srt gains the same --follow (it never had a released --linger). Behavior: Ctrl-C on a live import now closes the session gracefully before the stages stop. Live tracks never drain, so this can take up to the session's 1 s close deadline.
moq-rtc: MediaSink::abort is now also called when the session ends by a peer disconnect or an ICE timeout, not only on a genuine failure. A custom sink should abort its catalog there too.
moq-rtmp: no API change. The catalog now ends with the media.
Wire: none.
Decisions
Decided with the maintainer, relayed by the coordinator:
Where to fix a publisher that drops tracks without a cause:
✅ At the publisher: going offline ends every unfinished track with a cause left() accepts, and left() stays narrow.
Widen left() to Stream(NotFound | Internal) and Dropped.
Bring back a short announcement check for non-left causes.
Made without asking:
The route at the publisher is to detach first, not to add a new cause. For moq-cli, closing the session before the stages drop covers every stage in one place and needs no new error variant. I considered two alternatives:
Make broadcast::Producer::close() abort its unfinished tracks with Unroutable. This would change relay copies: a withdrawn broadcast keeps its source error (pinned by fix(net): consumers see the source's real error, never Dropped #5729), and resume treats Unroutable as a verdict, not a route failure. It would also still race the stages' drop order.
Add GoingAway to left(). This still needs every publisher to abort explicitly.
moq-rtmp and moq-rtc already had abort and finish paths; they only missed the catalog or the disconnect.
An interrupt closes the session gracefully. The detach keeps Connection::close, which withdraws the announcement first and waits for the transport to send the close. The cost is up to 1 s on Ctrl-C while the live tracks fail to drain. Aborting the session would be immediate, but it does not wait for the close to reach the peer before the stages drop, so it would race the very drops it exists to prevent.
moq-transport has no cause for a lost route. Its PUBLISH_DONE registry has no "upstream gone" code, so a relay ends such a copy with INTERNAL_ERROR, which reads here as Error::Remote(0). The follower treats any unregistered remote code as the publisher leaving. The alternative was failing at once, which would break the moq-transport-17 failover that doc/setup/redundancy.md documents. The cost: a real moq-transport internal error, with the broadcast still up, exits after --follow instead of at once (the default 0s makes those the same). moq-lite keeps the exact classification.
A stitched replacement whose catalog finishes before its first snapshot is followed like any other finish. The export exits 1 with the missing-catalog error if nothing serves by --follow (at once with 0s), and carries on if a later instance serves. Codex suggested failing at once; I declined in the review thread.
Removed tests. Tests that pinned the catalog deadline (*_expires_at_the_linger, a_midstream_stitch_bound_survives_route_updates, a_nested_stitch_restored_after_its_deadline_fails, a_midstream_stitch_catalog_after_the_linger_fails, a_midstream_stitch_catalog_within_linger_clears_the_bound) are deleted or rewritten to assert there is no deadline. New tests cover each failure cause, the old instance playing during a pending switch, and a zero-follow stitch onto a cold replacement.
Test publishers that leave now say so. Tests whose publisher leaves now abort its tracks with Unroutable, as a relay would. Previously they dropped the producers, which gives consumers Dropped, a producer bug per rs/AGENTS.md.
export srt --linger is not kept as a hidden alias. It was never released, so it is just an unknown flag now.
Audit
Every publisher path, after this PR:
moq-cli import (stdin, capture, rtsp, hls, archive, rtmp/srt --connect): an interrupt or a stage ending closes the session first. The rtmp/srt --listen ingests run outside the stage set, and already abort with Transport or finish.
moq-rtmp, moq-srt, moq-hls, moq-rtc ingests: finish on a clean end; otherwise abort the media and the catalog with the cause.
moq-gst sink: finishes every track and the catalog on stop, even without EOS.
js/publish: closes every track cleanly before the broadcast. An encoder fatal error closes with a plain Error (Internal), which is a real failure, not going offline.
moq-ffi / moq-c: MoqBroadcastProducer::close() and moq_publish_close() leave media and raw track handles open, so an app that closes its broadcast and then drops those handles while its session is up gives readers Dropped, which the follower does not follow. That is now the quest quest/m1/broadcast-lifecycle/ffi-close.md, planned in moq-dev/moq#6692. An app-chosen abort(code) sends App(code), which is the app's own failure.
Checks
just check: passes on aa23bd0 (after merging main; the merge only aligned quests, and the PR's code diff is unchanged).
just rs cli-export: 14/14 on aa23bd0 and on ec76596 (12/14 on ace514f). Since then, a_drop_exits_one_once_the_follow_expires also asserts the export waited out its follow from the interrupt; it passes on 43a56e6 and fails with the old teardown order. One earlier full run on this tree failed redundant_importers_switch_through_bufferbloat_on_lite_07 before its first output, with no interrupt involved. It passed alone and in the next full run.
New unit tests, all on a paused clock, each failing before its fix:
an_interrupted_stage_ends_its_tracks_as_the_session_closing (moq-cli): the old order gives Stream(Internal).
a_hangup_ends_the_catalog (moq-rtmp): was Dropped.
a_session_ending_without_a_delete_ends_its_tracks (moq-rtc): was Dropped.
Suggested follow-ups
moq import rtc --connect (WHEP) looks like it returns as soon as the session starts. Since the first stage to finish ends the process, that would end moq at once (rs/moq-cli/src/rtc.rs, rs/moq-rtc/src/client/mod.rs). Not confirmed.
redundant_importers_switch_through_bufferbloat_on_lite_07 timed out before its first output in one of three full runs.
just fix (clippy --all-targets) fails on main: rs/moq-mux/benches includes src/container/decode.rs from #6453, which refers to crate::codec and crate::Result. just check does not build that target.
If moq-transport failover matters beyond the redundancy doc, carry a lost-route cause there (for example, a relay retracting the namespace before it sends PUBLISH_DONE on draft 14-16's single control stream), so Remote(_) stops being treated as "left".
The TS export option and related API fields change from linger to follow. The TS follower now consumes publisher-instance events, distinguishes publisher departures from other errors, and handles return and replacement catalogs without a separate catalog deadline. CLI validation, SRT wiring, tests, migration guidance, and documentation are updated to reflect the new behavior.
Priority: Normal
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to f24b1
Stopping a publisher with Ctrl-C can now make moq export ts --follow exit with an error instead of waiting for the replacement. This affects the documented redundancy failover, and the author reports two export integration tests failing. Fix this before merging. The SRT --linger rename also lacks the required hidden migration flag, which is a smaller issue.

Explanation
The pull request description is detailed and directly related to the changeset. It explains that the TS export follower now uses moq_mux::follow::Instances, that --linger is renamed to --follow (with a stop-with-migration message on export ts), that CLOSE_GRACE is removed in favor of cause-based classification of track failures, and that publishers (moq-cli, moq-rtmp, moq-rtc) now end their tracks with a cause the follower accepts. It also lists the affected docs, the breaking API rename of Follower::with_linger to with_follow, the Stitch/Follow behavior changes, and the test and check results. The description matches the raw summary of changes across doc, moq-cli, moq-mux, moq-srt, and quest files.

Fail immediately when a stitched catalog ends without a snapshot
With --stitch --follow 10s, if the replacement's catalog closes cleanly before delivering its first snapshot while the broadcast remains announced, this branch turns the invalid replacement into another ten-second follow wait instead of reporting the failure. A subsequent replacement can even clear the error through carry_on, so it is never reported. This contradicts the new behavior that failures other than the publisher leaving exit immediately, and delays recovery by callers monitoring the export's exit. Return the missing-catalog error directly for this case rather than entering Settling; the existing a_midstream_stitch_catalog_closed_without_a_snapshot_fails test only checks completion within thirty seconds and therefore misses the delay.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
I disagree with failing at once here. A catalog that closes cleanly is a finish, and the follower follows a finish everywhere else: a clean end enters Settling and waits out --follow. The replacement that finished before its first snapshot is treated the same way, except its end is recorded as the missing-catalog error, so the export exits 1 if nothing serves before the deadline. With the default --follow 0s that happens at once.
A replacement that does serve within the window clearing the error is intended. The export recovered onto a working publisher, which is what --follow asks for. Failing at once would end an export the user asked to keep following, just because one publisher started and finished with nothing in between. Leaving as is.
The follower records only a refusal that is not the publisher leaving, so a
return routed through a dead session ends the export as the broadcast did,
not with that session's error.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Blocking: the nightly export process tests regress.just rs cli-export fails 2 of 14 on this branch: a_restarted_publisher_exits_one_without_stitch and a_restarted_publisher_is_a_program_switch_with_stitch. Both pass on main at de9ff79.
Cause: the tests stop the publisher with SIGINT, the way an operator does. moq import's shutdown aborts its tasks, which drops the track producers without finish() or abort(). The publisher then answers its live subscriptions with not found (media) and dropped (catalog) while its session is still up. The relay passes that verdict through, so the exporter sees Stream(NotFound) / Stream(Internal). left() doesn't count either one as the publisher leaving, so the exporter logs export failed, so not following and exits 1 at once. On main, CLOSE_GRACE covered this case: the announcement dropped within 1 s and the export followed.
So cause-based classification only works when every publisher's offline path ends its unfinished tracks with a cause that reads as "left". Today moq-cli's Ctrl-C path doesn't, and other publishers may not either. Possible fixes, each a design call:
Fix it at the publisher (recommended, in line with the quest's "add one at the source"). Going offline aborts unfinished tracks with a cause that left() accepts. Two ways: close the session before the stages drop, or have the moq-mux importers abort on drop. A dedicated cause such as GoingAway, added to left(), would also work. Every publisher path then needs the same audit (moq-gst, moq-ffi/moq-c, js/publish).
Widen left() to Stream(NotFound | Internal) and Dropped. This is cheap, but almost everything then counts as "left", and a real failure exits only after --follow.
Keep a short announcement check for non-left causes. That brings back the timer this quest set out to remove.
Also pushed a doc fix (57acf5d): doc/bin/cli.md said a return routed through a dead session exits 1 with that error. The follower now records only non-left refusals, so such a return ends the export the way the broadcast ended.

Preserve the SRT flag's hidden migration diagnostic
For existing moq export srt --linger 10s invocations, this rename removes the old argument entirely, so parsing rejects it as an unknown flag instead of naming --follow as its replacement. Unlike export ts, SRT has neither a hidden linger field nor a corresponding entry in Export::deprecated(). This violates the renamed-flag requirement in rs/AGENTS.md: retain the hidden spelling and report it through moq_tokio::cli::Deprecated, while still refusing startup. Add that migration handling for SRT too.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Declining the hidden alias. export srt --linger was never released: the last release's export srt took crate::srt::Args, which has no linger flag. So there is no released invocation to keep working, and an unknown-flag error is the right answer. The MIGRATE entry wrongly said otherwise; fixed in 43a56e6, which now only says export srt takes the same --follow.

Merged main (no rebase). Conflicts were quest-only: this PR finishes ts-follow.md and main finished sink-restart-follow.md in moq-dev/moq#6649, so both are deleted. The moq-ffi/moq-c handle question is now its own quest, quest/m1/broadcast-lifecycle/ffi-close.md, planned in moq-dev/moq#6692, so Decisions needed is gone from the body.
