feat(net)!: separate publication control from broadcast filling - #6464
Every broadcast producer currently exposes announcement methods, including standalone and Prepared fill producers on which those methods can only fail. The fill role does not establish an origin publication capability.
Approach
Add origin::Publication as the origin-owned record combining a fill broadcast and real announcement control. Native creation, immediate publication, and successful Prepared publication return it; standalone and Prepared fill producers have no public announce, unannounce, or route methods.
The record borrows its fill through broadcast() and forwards immutable fill operations. It deliberately does not implement DerefMut, which would let a caller replace its fill with an unrelated standalone producer. Publication clones and fill clones retain the established broadcast lifetime. There is no finish(): a broadcast has no finished state since moq-dev/moq#6660.
Migrate actual Rust holders, including the TS demuxer, RTMP/SRT ingest, HLS import, transcode, stats, media encoders, relay fixtures, and benchmarks. Importers and encoders receive fill clones; holders needing advertisement control keep the publication. Private C/UniFFI adapters retain the real capability beside their existing fill handle, including after Prepared admission. C admission checks underlying broadcast identity, allowing valid fill clones and rejecting a different prepared broadcast. Admission and capability attachment share the existing adapter lock. A fill leaves the adapter registry only on close. A present mismatched fill is rejected before native admission; actual closed fills keep the native admission failure.
Impact
Breaking native API (moq-net): origin::Producer::{create_broadcast,publish} and Prepared::publish return origin::Publication. To migrate:
Call announce, unannounce, and route on the publication; a standalone producer and Prepared::broadcast() no longer have them.
Use publication.broadcast() for a borrowed broadcast::Producer fill surface (clone it for fill-only consumers); Publication also forwards fill operations.
Cloning a publication shares its broadcast and route. A cloned fill producer keeps the publication alive after the control handle drops; call unannounce to retract sooner.
To end content, finish each track and hand publication.broadcast().clone() to moq_mux::Linger (or close it yourself), as for any broadcast after moq-dev/moq#6660.
A claim answer (request.prepare(epoch)?, fill prepared.broadcast(), then prepared.publish()?) now gets an origin::Publication back; only publish announces it.
Native standalone and Prepared fill producers no longer expose public announcement control.
The @moq/net, C, and UniFFI public role split lands in follow-up PRs (see Decisions). Current bridge signatures and generated wrapper surfaces remain unchanged; their adapters are private.
No wire format, version negotiation, or package version changes.
Decisions
✅ Publication shape (maintainer, 2026-10-23): approve origin::Publication as proposed: an origin-owned record with immutable fill access through broadcast(), no DerefMut, finish() handing off to broadcast::Finish, and the existing fill/Finish lifetime (the last Publication dropping does not retract on its own). finish() was later dropped when main removed broadcast::Finish (moq-dev/moq#6660); the rest stands.
Alternative not taken: a literal (broadcast::Producer, origin::Announcer) pair, which makes every media holder and finish/linger path retain and transfer both.
Alternative not taken: an independent last-announcement-drop policy, which changes existing fill-clone retention.
✅ Rollout split (maintainer, 2026-10-23): three PRs. This PR lands the native origin::Publication with private binding adapters and finishes the announce-owner quest. @moq/net mirrors Publication in its own PR, startable now. moq-ffi, the C ABI, and every wrapper mirror it once this merges, replacing the private adapters. The full rollout would otherwise add about 55 TypeScript and 45 binding files in nine languages to the 85 native files here, and the C ABI needs its own publication handle.
Alternative not taken: two PRs, folding moq-ffi, the C ABI, and wrappers into this one.
Alternative not taken: one PR with everything, about 185 files in nine languages.
Kept separate: the JS Prepared lifecycle proposal and the claim request type quest. The binding route-input change is on main; binding publication control will consume its MoqAnnounceRoute. Request::prepare and admission are unchanged; Prepared::broadcast stays fill-only and Prepared::publish wraps its admitted result in the publication.
Quests
Deletes quest/m1/api-audit/announce-owner.md: this PR finishes its native scope.
Adds quest/m1/api-audit/js-publication.md ([M], startable now): mirror Publication in @moq/net and migrate its callers.
Adds quest/m1/api-audit/binding-publication.md ([L], ready once this merges): MoqPublication in moq-ffi, a C publication handle (moq_origin_create_broadcast returns it and writes the fill handle to broadcast_out; moq_broadcast_prepared_publish returns one; announce and unannounce take it), and every wrapper, replacing the private adapters.
Both are linked from the API-audit epic README, the broadcast-lifecycle quests now link them instead of the deleted announce-owner quest, and a dead link to the finished binding-state quest is dropped; a stale broadcast::Producer unannounce mention in quest/m2/stats/preflight.md now names origin::Publication.
Validation
Merged origin/main three times (no rebase). The merges needed Publication migrations in tests and callers main added: moq-mux TS export and moving-rendition tests, the moq-stats producer-tick bench, moq-relay cluster-drain fixtures, moq-gst sibling-source tests, moq-cli HLS import (including main's joined-then-ended playlist tests) and transcode, and a moq-ffi test now on MoqAnnounceRoute. A fourth merge, after MIGRATE.md moved to the release cut, dropped this PR's rs/moq-net/MIGRATE.md hunks in favor of the Impact notes above, and retargeted broadcast-lifecycle quest links from the deleted announce-owner quest to the JS and binding publication quests.
cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets --all-features -D warnings, just check, and just test interop --all passed on head 9c9c7856ce05814b0074448617cc33f90bffd625.
The queue dropped 3a4c639f80 for two tests main added that still held a broadcast::Producer (moq-clitests/integration/epochs.rs and a moq-hls sibling-denial route test); both now hold origin::Publication. On head 318da1444bc163d7ba600c0b1373f0e8a4005d80: just check passed every module (including test rs, test js, test py) on the merge before main's last three commits, and after them moq-hls/moq-cli tests compile, moq-hls tests pass, and quest check passes.
On head 3a4c639f8031ea804084873cc1fe1b6afe61cd9f (after the MIGRATE.md move): just test interop --all passes except rust -> js-native-node and rust-swapped -> js-native-node, the known opus timestamp-gap flake under host load (interop timestamp gap).
quest check --base origin/main passes.
The queue dropped 318da1444b for a main conflict. A fifth merge adapted main's TS program start (moq-muxprograms.rs) and moq-cli's new instance-following transcode loop and its test to origin::Publication, kept main's cli-flags PR link beside the publication quest links in broadcast-lifecycle, and dropped a binding-publication link to the wrapper-config quest main finished. On head 2d912f75280957841f821a9a8784f0a80fb3f34d's first parent: just check passed every module (including test rs, test js, test py) and just test interop --all passed in full; after main's last commit, moq-mux, moq-c, moq-ffi, and moq-video tests and clippy pass.
The queue dropped 2d912f7528 for a main conflict. A sixth merge exported Publication beside main's new origin::Link, moved the publication quest links into main's api-audit list (main finished unpublish), adapted main's rewritten TS program start, and handed moq_mux::Linger (moq-dev/moq#6636) each publication's broadcast() in moq-mux, moq-cli, moq-gst, moq-rtmp, and moq-srt. On head 4615438e9586242d4c6a4b99edbcec51dffd646a's first parent: just check passed every module (including test rs, test js, test py); just test interop --all passed in full one merge earlier; the last merge was drafts and quests only, and quest check passes. cargo check --benches fails on main itself (moq-mux bench decode_clock after moq-dev/moq#6453), unrelated to this PR.
The queue dropped 4615438e95 for failed checks: the merge group's test rs stopped compiling on moq-cli's a_moved_audio_rendition_plays_its_new_track, a test main added that still borrowed a broadcast::Producer from create_broadcast (main itself passes). A seventh merge, through 55f6ed2292, moved it and the tests moq-dev/moq#6649 added (moq-rtc WHEP/Opus restart and moved-rendition tests, moq-rtmp dial and server restart fixtures, and the moq-hls restart route test) onto origin::Publication fill clones, kept moq-cli and moq-gst readers follow a broadcast's restarts #6649's @{instance} route tests and run() epochs beside this PR's fill clones, and dropped the finished sink-restart-follow link from the api-audit README. On the merge before main's last two commits: just check passed every module (including test rs with 8882 tests, test js, test py) and just test interop --all passed in full (172); after them (fMP4 edit lists and quests), moq-mux tests and quest check pass.
Earlier on the pre-merge head: the full native suite passed except two io_uring setup failures from host RLIMIT_MEMLOCK exhaustion (no source or assertion was changed for that host limit).
The queue dropped d4415dfa07 for a main conflict with moq-dev/moq#6660, which removed broadcast::Finish. A merge through 1404928d4c drops Publication::finish, the two a_finished_prepared_fill_can_still_be_published tests (moq-c, moq-ffi) that relied on a retained Finish, the follow-up quests' finish mentions, and feat(net)!: broadcasts have no finished state #6660's deleted stateless quest; it moves main's new TS export follower tests (feat(mux)!: TS export follows by cause, and --linger is --follow #6656) and the Rust interop finish client's Linger onto publication fill clones. On that head: cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets --all-features -D warnings, just check (every module, test rs with 8874 tests), and quest check --base origin/main pass. just test interop --all passed 171 of 172; the failure, python -> c with an audio timestamp gap (500000us after a frame ending at 393500us), passed 3 of 3 isolated --publishers python --subscribers c runs, so it looks like the full-matrix load flake, outside this PR's Rust publication change.
A clean merge of main through 4768fe341d brought in eight more commits with no conflicts. On that head: cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets --all-features -D warnings, just check (test rs with 8881 tests; just dart check rerun alone after one known RSS leak flake), and quest check --base origin/main pass. Codex reviewed 1404928d4c with no findings.
The queue dropped 4768fe341d for a main conflict. Merges through f76ccc735d reconcile moq-dev/moq#6496 (only sessions accept an origin request) with this PR: its claim answers and exact-path publishes now hold origin::Publication (moq-netdrained_claim, moq-mux TS export follower tests and the containers/export benches, moq-hls sibling-route export tests, the moq-cli media claim helper), its deleted claim-request-type quest's link leaves js-publication, and the api-audit README keeps both quest removals. They also take main's CLI-driven export --echo test (moq-dev/moq#6552), keep main's node-broadcast stats layout (moq-dev/moq#6428) with its broadcasts held as origin::Publication, and hand moq-dev/moq#6262's moq_archive::Consumer a publication fill in moq-cli archive import and the moq-hls replay test (its README and doc example now say the served broadcast is a publication's fill). No public API change beyond those mechanical moves. On the merge through feat(net)!: only sessions accept an origin request #6496: just check passed every module (test rs with 8901 tests, test js, test py). On the final head: cargo check --workspace --all-targets --all-features, workspace clippy with -D warnings except moq-quic, nextest for moq-stats, moq-archive, moq-hls, and moq-cli (626 tests), and quest check --base origin/main pass. moq-quic's benches fail clippy on main itself after moq-dev/moq#6635 (field_reassign_with_default in benches/common/mod.rs), untouched here.
CI passed on f76ccc735d (11 of 11 checks), and Codex reacted to it with a thumbs-up. One CodeRabbit finding on that head was declined in its thread. It asked to store the prepared publication before publish()'s second driver check. Once that check fails, every binding call returns the driver error before it reaches the publication, so storing it first changes nothing.
Propose an origin-owned Publication with immutable fill access and migrate current Rust consumers. Preserve finished Prepared publication and keep public JS/binding rollout open for the return/lifetime decision.
Checkpoint validation: 8289 native tests and 513 capture/playback tests passed before the final CLI play fixture migration. The current full CI rerun and all-language interop are still pending.

The origin announces
feat(net): separate publication control from broadcast filling
Oct 23, 2026
The maintainer approved origin::Publication as proposed: an origin-owned
record holding the fill broadcast and its announcement capability, with
immutable fill access and the existing fill/Finish lifetime.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The maintainer chose three PRs: this one lands the native
origin::Publication and finishes the announce-owner quest, the JS mirror
can start now, and the binding rollout follows once this merges.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Checkpoint: work stopped here because usage ran out. The PR stays a draft.
Done (pushed at da86a4f64ad83ba7e883ca4c877ae1ff84aff577):
Recorded both maintainer decisions with ✅ in the PR body: the origin::Publication shape and the three-PR rollout split.
Split the quest work: this PR deletes quest/m1/api-audit/announce-owner.md (it finishes the native scope) and adds quest/m1/api-audit/js-publication.md, startable now, and quest/m1/api-audit/binding-publication.md, ready once this merges and carrying the proposed C handle shape. Both are linked from the API-audit epic README.
Merged origin/main twice (no rebase) and migrated the callers main added since the last push to Publication. The private binding adapters are kept.
Checks on this head:cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets --all-features -D warnings, just check, just test interop --all, and quest check all pass. GitHub CI has not been watched on this head, and no review has run yet.
Remaining, to resume:
Mark ready (gh pr ready 6464 --repo moq-dev/moq). That triggers CI and the automated reviews.
Wait for a non-Grok review of the final head (quest wait 6464 --timeout 3300), fix the findings you agree with, and reply to the rest.
From outside the checkout, run quest --root <head-checkout> check --base origin/main --branch quest/m1/api-audit/announce-owner.
Post the merge summary, then gh pr merge 6464 --repo moq-dev/moq --auto --squash --match-head-commit <full head SHA>.
The origin API now returns Publication handles that separate announcement control from broadcast filling. The C and FFI layers retain these handles and admit prepared answers through publication-aware paths. Application code, tests, fixtures, and benchmarks were updated to keep publication handles and pass cloned broadcast handles to fill operations. The documentation and API-audit plans describe the publication model and its migration.

feat(net): separate publication control from broadcast filling
feat(net)!: separate publication control from broadcast filling
Oct 24, 2026
Main removed broadcast::Finish (#6660), so Publication::finish goes too,
along with the finished-prepared admission tests and the follow-up quests'
finish mentions. Main's new TS export tests and the interop finish client
now take Publication fill clones.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The queue dropped d4415dfa07 for a conflict with moq-dev/moq#6660, which removed broadcast::Finish. Changes since:
origin::Publication::finish is gone with it, so a publication has no finish path; content ends with track FINs and moq_mux::Linger (or a manual close) over publication.broadcast().clone(), like any broadcast. The approved Publication shape otherwise stands; the PR body's decision record notes the drop.
Deleted the moq-c and moq-ffi a_finished_prepared_fill_can_still_be_published tests, which relied on a retained Finish, and fixed the adapter comments: a fill now leaves the binding registry only on close, which native admission refuses.
Main's new TS export follower tests and the Rust interop finish client take publication fill clones.
A second, clean merge of main brought in eight more commits.
Checks: workspace clippy (-D warnings), just check (8881 Rust tests), and quest check --base origin/main pass on this head. just test interop --all passed 171/172 on the first merge; python -> c (audio timestamp gap) passed 3/3 isolated reruns. Codex reviewed both new heads with no findings.

On the merge before main's last two commits:just checkpassed every module (includingtest rswith 8882 tests, test js,test py) andjust test interop --allpassed in full (172); after them (fMP4 edit lists and quests),moq-muxtests andquest checkpass.main, through d86d0c25e9, brought in moq-dev/moq#6517 and moq-dev/moq#6465. Merges through f76ccc735d reconcile moq-dev/moq#6496 (only sessions accept an origin request) with this PR: its claim answers and exact-path publishes now holdorigin::Publication(moq-netdrained_claim,moq-muxTS export follower tests and thecontainers/exportbenches,moq-hlssibling-route export tests, themoq-climedia claim helper), its deletedclaim-request-typequest's link leavesjs-publication, and the api-audit README keeps both quest removals. No public API change beyond those mechanical moves.
