fix(net): a widened max age re-offers skipped cached groups - #6717
A reader that widens its max age now gets the cached groups its cursor skipped as stale, the ones the wider budget covers. Before this change, those groups were gone for good.
Rust (rs/moq-net/src/model/track.rs, new skipped.rs):
Each plain cursor records the groups it skipped as stale, as runs, along with the budget each run was judged under.
When a poll's budget is wider than a run's, the cursor owes that run again. The run reuses the moq-dev/moq#5929 owed path, so nothing already handed out goes out twice.
A skip at the track's max age bound is final, so it is never recorded.
forget_past_budget stops folding at the lowest skipped or still-owed group.
A pending Old drop inside a re-offered run is withdrawn. A drop already reported stays dropped: lite-05+ TrackRun::served filters it out.
Re-offer order.next_owed now follows the subscription order: newest first, unless ascending. This also applies to the moq-dev/moq#5929 range-widening re-offer, which used to go lowest first.
JS (js/net/src/track.ts, lite/publisher.ts):
Same skipped record and re-offer in the JS track.
Sequences already reported in SUBSCRIBE_DROP are never re-offered.
A re-offer withdraws a stale drop not reported yet, as Rust does, including the budget skips a drop-reading resumed copy (moq-dev/moq#6758) queues.
At SUBSCRIBE_START, the stale skips below the start are unreported, since they were never sent, so a widening can re-offer them.
Today, a warm lite-07 relay already fills a wider newcomer's gap by range, through moq-dev/moq#6171. This PR covers the rest:
a reader widening its own max age;
a direct subscriber;
the upstream half of a relay copy.
Public API and wire impact
Public API: none.
Wire: no encoding change. A publisher now opens streams for cached groups it skipped as stale when SUBSCRIBE_UPDATE widens the max age. Groups it already reported in SUBSCRIBE_DROP stay out.
Tests
New tests:
Rust model unit tests:
widened budget, newest first;
ascending, lowest first;
a skip outlives the fold of its delivered neighbours;
a skip at the max age bound folds;
an evicted skip is forgotten;
a widening that covers only the newer of two skips keeps the older one owed;
a newest-first range re-offer never folds the older groups it still owes.
skipped.rs unit tests.
Lite publisher: a reported stale drop survives a widening (lite-05/06/07).
Integration widened_max_age, lite-07, over mock sessions:
direct and through a relay; the relay case fails on main;
a warm relay matches a cold one;
the same max age sends no SUBSCRIBE_UPDATE.
JS: model tests (re-offer, a parked read woken by a widening, a raised floor in the same update, a partial widening, an unreported stale drop withdrawn, an evicted skip releasing the delivered gaps) and a lite-07 wire test.
Nine existing tests changed expectations from lowest-first to newest-first re-offer order.
The new track_budget_widening bench sweeps readers (1, 64) × cached (64, 1024, 16384) × skipped runs (1, 16, 256). Per re-offered group:
cached
runs
cost
64
16
~0.75 µs
16384
256
~1.7 µs
With one run, 64 → 16384 cached goes from ~1 µs to ~10 µs. About 4 µs of that is Subscriber::update itself, which is unchanged by this PR. The rest looks like log-depth lookups on a cold cache, not a scan: a scan would grow 256x.
Checks:
Passed: just check, cargo nextest run -p moq-net (3212 passed), bun test in js/net, quest check.
Not run: just test interop --all, since there is no wire encoding change.
Choices made
The skipped record lives only as long as the cache holds its groups. This replaces the plan's pool-billed record with TooFarBehind on eviction:
A run with no cached group left can never be offered again, so it is pruned. A full prune runs once the runs outnumber twice the cached groups.
The record is boxed on the first skip, so cursors that never skip pay 8 bytes.
Delivered stays as it is. TrackRun::served and the JS #reported are not absorbed.
The ordered cursor (poll_next_group) gets no re-offer: it never returns a group below one it delivered.
The JS buffer is ascending, so its re-offer stays lowest first.
Decisions
Settled by the maintainer on 2026-10-25:
✅ Skipped-record lifetime: (a) keep the cache-tied record in this PR. The full pool-billed disposition record (replace Delivered, absorb served/#reported, TooFarBehind on eviction) moves to Drop set, which this PR updates.
✅ Order of the range-widening (moq-dev/moq#5929) re-offer: (a) follow the subscription order, newest first by default.
✅ JS re-offer order: (a) lowest first for now, since the buffer is ascending.
Quest
This PR finishes quest/m1/resolved-demand.md and deletes it. quest/m1/drop-set.md now owns the deferred work: the pool-billed per-cursor record and the warm/cold equivalence after an edge loss.
Checkpoint: the arrival cursor records the cached groups it skips as stale with the
budget it judged them under, and a wider budget owes them again through the
widening re-offer path, now in the subscription's order.

The lite publisher and the JS track re-offer the cached groups a cursor
skipped as stale once SUBSCRIBE_UPDATE widens the max age, newest first
unless ascending. A drop already reported stays dropped; one still pending
is withdrawn. Covers the relay, direct, and JS wire paths, with a bench
swept over readers, cached groups, and skipped runs.

Walkthrough
JavaScript and Rust subscribers now track cached groups skipped as stale and can reoffer eligible groups after a max-age budget widens. Reoffers follow subscription order and respect range bounds and existing delivery tracking. The change adds tests for subscriber, publisher, and relay behavior, plus a benchmark for budget widening. It also updates milestone planning documents and scheduler benchmarks.

Independently confirmed two already-documented correctness issues:
JS range-floor violation #6717 (comment) : recalculate the buffer index after re-offering/sorting skipped groups.
Rust skipped-gap protection #6717 (comment) : retain protection until each owed candidate is processed. Partial widening can fold an older skipped group into Delivered, preventing recovery on subsequent widening.
Also replace the 100ms quiet-period test heuristic #6717 (comment) with deterministic synchronization; delayed delivery can produce a false failure.
Direction: reusing owed-group handling and preserving reported drops without wire changes is reasonable. Combined range/budget-update and repeated-widening coverage are needed.
Verification: static changed code, surrounding delivery/folding logic and tests inspection. No tests or builds executed.
…floor
A widening kept the skipped record only until it queued the re-offer, so a
newer re-offered group handed out first could fold an older skip into the
delivered floor. JS also found its buffer index before re-offering, letting
a re-offered group below a raised floor through. The wire test no longer
races a wall-clock timer.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Compute the lowest skipped sequence only when a gap is about to be forgotten.
#forgetPastBudget runs for every non-resume #handOut. It scans all of #skipped before checking whether the oldest gap is stale. Since #skipped can retain up to twice the timeline length, this adds avoidable O(skipped) work to each delivered group.
Move the scan into the stale-gap branch. This preserves gap retirement because the scan still runs before delivered.forgetBelow(...).

Move the scan of this.#skipped in #forgetPastBudget so it runs only after an
oldest gap is found to be stale, before delivered.forgetBelow(...) can retire
that gap. Scan at most once per call, preserving the existing skipped-sequence
calculation and retirement behavior while avoiding work when no gap is stale.
Skip the track read lock when a plain cursor has no skipped runs.
Subscriber::hand_out calls Cursor::prune_skipped for every group on the Inner::Plain path. prune_skipped acquires state.read() before Skipped::prune, although most readers never record skipped runs and the cursor is documented as hot. This creates an unnecessary lock acquisition on ordinary reads. The early check preserves pruning because Skipped::prune does nothing for None or an empty run set.

Since #6758 a JS cursor that #tryDrop reads queues its stale skips as
pending drops, so a widening now withdraws the unreported Old drop of each
group it re-offers, as the Rust cursor already does.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Compared with 263b317, accounting for main integration. Withdrawing pending Old drops when groups are reoffered is the right adaptation; the three previous fixes remain intact.
An existing P2 missed wake remains, independently reported at #6717 (comment): recvGroup waits on #groupChanged (track.ts:2606–2622), which omits #state.update. Widening maxDelay (track.ts:2881–2884) with an unchanged cursor therefore does not wake a parked reader to reoffer cached groups until an unrelated event. Include subscription updates in readiness and add a regression that updates while recvGroup is parked. This is not newly introduced by this delta.
Verification: static inspection of the update, signal dependencies, and surrounding stale-group/drop handling. No tests or builds run.
The previously referenced missed-wakeup finding #6717 (comment) is addressed: subscription updates now wake a parked group reader, and the regression starts the read before widening maxDelay.
No new actionable bugs found. Adding the missing readiness dependency is a focused fix that reuses the existing reoffer path without additional mechanisms.
Verification: static comparison against df1ce8d, both changed files and surrounding read/wait/reoffer logic. No tests or builds run.
CodeRabbit's two nitpicks are applied in 261b7f2: Cursor::prune_skipped returns before taking the track lock when nothing was skipped, and the JS #forgetPastBudget scans #skipped only once a gap is stale.
No new actionable bugs found. Deferring the JS skipped-record scan until a stale gap needs retirement and bypassing Rust's track read lock when no skipped runs exist are focused hot-path improvements; skipped-gap protection and the prior parked-reader wake fix remain intact.
Verification: static comparison against 84e19c1 and surrounding handout/pruning logic. No tests or benchmarks run.
The independently reported evicted-skip retention issue #6717 (comment) is addressed: JS removes skips no longer held by the cache before using them to block delivered-gap compaction. The manual-time regression exercises eviction followed by sparse delivery and checks bounded bookkeeping.
No new actionable bugs found. This focused correction preserves protection for recoverable cached groups and retains the deferred-scan optimization.
Verification: static comparison against 261b7f2, including cache membership, reoffer, and gap-retirement logic. No tests or benchmarks run.
Maintainer decisions (2026-10-25) recorded in the body: cache-tied skipped record here, full pool-billed record deferred to quest/m1/drop-set.md; range-widening re-offer follows the subscription order (newest first by default); JS re-offers lowest first.
This PR finishes and deletes quest/m1/resolved-demand.md. quest/m1/drop-set.md now holds the deferred per-cursor record and the warm/cold-after-edge-loss question.
Review fixes since ready: re-offered skips stay recorded until handled (Rust, JS); JS finds its buffer index after the re-offer; the wire test drops its wall-clock wait; JS withdraws an unreported stale drop on re-offer (after merging moq-dev/moq#6758); a parked JS read wakes on a budget widening; evicted JS skips stop blocking gap compaction; Rust never folds groups a widened range still owes; two hot-path perf nitpicks.
Checks: just check passed locally on each head; Codex 👍 and the OpenAI review found nothing on d149156.
#6809 removed Schedule::open_domain and open_group's domain
argument, which left this bench (it includes moq-quic's schedule.rs by
path) failing to compile on main.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
No new actionable bugs found. The schedule benchmark now matches the domain-free scheduler API introduced on main: all open_group calls use the new signature, and the obsolete domain sweep is removed while group-count and queued-datagram sweeps remain. This is a focused build-compatibility fix rather than a runtime scheduling change.
The previously reviewed owed-group compaction fix remains intact; the remaining update is main integration and documentation reconciliation.
Verification: static base-aware comparison against d149156, including the benchmark's included scheduler API and retained reoffer logic. No builds, tests or benchmarks run.
A later subscription update lowers floor, and withRange reoffers newly covered cached groups. The idle START path clears skipped without unreporting ranges below startSequence. #reoffer then removes those groups when they remain in #reported, so the subscriber does not receive them.
Suggested fix
startSequence = bounds.startGroup;
raiseFloor(bounds.startGroup);
+ for (const range of skipped) {+ if (range.start < startSequence)+ hooks.unreport(track, range.start, Math.min(range.end, startSequence));+ }
const start = new SubscribeStart(bounds.startGroup, largest);

The idle START path (a start past everything the track has) skipped
the unreport the group path did, so a later widening could not re-offer
a group given up below that start. Unreport where the skipped runs are
settled instead, once for both paths, matching the Rust publisher.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
CodeRabbit's outside-diff finding (idle START path in js/net/src/lite/publisher.ts skips hooks.unreport) is valid and fixed in 2dada1a: the unreport now runs where the skipped runs are settled at the top of the serve loop, once for both START paths, and the group-path copy is gone. It matches Rust, where pre-START skips below the start never enter served and so stay re-offerable.
The idle path only sees below-start skips when an update raises the floor between two pops before START, a race the wire tests cannot pin deterministically, so there is no dedicated test; the existing re-offer tests still pass.
Also on this head: merged origin/main (quest conflicts with moq-dev/moq#6707 and a dead link in quest/m1/relay-demand-gaps.md), moved the new publisher test to SubscribeUpdate::ranges, and fixed rs/moq-net/benches/schedule.rs, which moq-dev/moq#6809 left uncompilable on main by removing scheduling domains.
The independent idle-START finding in #6717 (review) is addressed: both START paths now unreport only the skipped portion below the resolved start before clearing the buffered skips. Settlement runs before subsequent updates, while drops at or above the start remain reported. My earlier review missed this idle-path case.
No new actionable bugs found. Centralizing this bookkeeping is simpler than duplicating it across START paths; earlier compaction and benchmark fixes are unchanged.
Verification: static comparison against f31a929 and surrounding control/START/skip settlement logic. No tests or builds run; this update adds no dedicated idle-START regression.
Landing 2dada1a after it left the queue on a merge_conflict. Since the previous landing summary: origin/main merged in (quest conflicts resolved, the finished quest's last link dropped), the new publisher test uses SubscribeUpdate::ranges, the moq-net schedule bench compiles again after moq-dev/moq#6809, and CodeRabbit's idle-START finding is fixed. The OpenAI review of this head found nothing new; required checks pass and quest check is clean.
Public API and wire impact are unchanged from the description.
Landing 8d943f0 after the second merge_conflict. Merged origin/main: the schedule bench now uses main's fix from moq-dev/moq#6824, so this PR no longer touches it, and the JS wire test announces through the Origin.Publication handle from moq-dev/moq#6795. moq-net clippy and tests, and js/net tests and tsc pass locally; required checks pass, Codex approved this head, and quest check is clean.
