fix(net): pass lite-05/06 timestamps through - #6996
moq-dev/moq#6150 made receivers drop every timestamp read over moq-lite-05/06, because an untimed origin stamps send times there. As a result, a lite-06 reader of a timed feed (such as a stats feed) saw untimed frames. moq-dev/moq#6300 also served moq-transport tracks to moq-lite untimed unless the ietf extension was negotiated. Maintainer decision (2026-10-25): pass the timestamps through instead.
Approach
Rust:track::Info gets back a crate-private unchecked flag. The lite subscriber sets it on a lite-05/06 copy. TrackState::neighbors skips the moq-dev/moq#5803 rewind check for unchecked or moq-transport-provenance tracks. Frame, fetch, and datagram ingest keep the timestamps they read.
Publishing:Info::lite_timescale and group::Consumer::lite_timescale are gone. Every lite hop serves the track's own timescale and timestamps, including to TRACKS_ADD, lite-07 without the extension, and lite-05/06. An untimed track on lite-05/06 still carries its send time in milliseconds, as published.
JS:@moq/net mirrors this. The @internaltrack.Info gains unchecked, mirroring Rust's: lite-05/06 TRACK_INFO maps to a timed copy with unchecked, and the rewind check skips an unchecked or ietf (moq-transport) copy. frameDecoder/readFrames lose their timed flag, and liteTimescale is gone.
Specs and docs:draft-lcurley-moq-lite (receiver text and changelog), draft-lcurley-moq-ietf (timestamps without the extension), doc/concept/moq-lite.md, and doc/setup/upgrade.md.
a timed track crossing a lite-06 (and moq-transport) hop between two origins with its values, served on over lite-06, lite-07, and moq-transport;
send times from an untimed origin passing a lite-06 relay unchecked, with lite-07 refusing the out-of-order group;
out-of-order fetches on lite-05/06 being accepted with their send times.
Interop finish clients: they no longer assert that the .health frame is untimed. A lite-06 browser publisher's untimed health track now reaches every reader with send times.
Choices made without asking
track::Info equality (Rust PartialEq, JS resume compatible) ignores unchecked. It records how a copy arrived, not what it holds, so same-epoch copies over lite-06 and lite-07 still splice. Before this change they mismatched on timescale.
The JS Info.ietf field stays, since resume compares it as Rust compares properties: a moq-transport copy does not splice beside a native one or another draft's. An earlier head renamed it to unchecked, dropping that comparison; pullfrog caught it (review thread).
has_media_time stays as the version predicate. It now means "set unchecked", and resolves_anchors keeps requiring it.
Takeover merge of main (2026-10-31): the lite-07 draft was trimmed to what a peer observes on main (moq-dev/moq#7040), so the receiver text here keeps that trim and only replaces the relay rule (serve timestamps on as received) and its changelog entry.
Public API: none in Rust (unchecked is crate-private). In JS, the @internaltrack.Info gains an @internalunchecked.
Wire: no format change. Receiver behavior changes:
A track received over moq-lite-05/06 arrives timed with the TRACK_INFO timescale. That is the publisher's media time, or send times in milliseconds for an untimed origin. Its groups are not rewind-checked.
A relay serves those, and moq-transport timestamps, on over every version. A lite-07 receiver still checks them, so a send-time origin's out-of-order group (or a moq-transport rewind without the ietf extension) may be refused downstream. This cost was accepted in the quest.
A wire flag telling lite-07 receivers a track is unchecked. The quest rejected it: rewinds are unsupported.
Keeping Info equality derived. Simpler, but it would refuse a same-epoch lite-06 copy beside a lite-07 one.
Checks
After merging origin/main (c04f777): just ci origin/main passes inside nix develop, as does just test interop --all. The merge needed two follow-on fixes for code main added: the group-ingest fuzz harness (moq-dev/moq#7320) now expects lite-05/06 tracks timed, and widened_max_age (moq-dev/moq#7168) now expects a lite-06 copy's narrow reader to skip a re-offer as stale by media time, as lite-07's does.
After the provenance fix (a2a7097): just ci origin/main passes inside nix develop.
Review
mechanical fix by codex / Codex: Merged base; preserved timestamp intent across clock API rename, fetch pipeline refactor, and removed WASM suite. (head 91c72e0)
Pullfrog's online review asked whether dropping ietf from JS resume compatibility was intended. It was not; fixed in a2a7097 (see Choices).
Codex gpt-6-astra, medium effort (quest review --deep, a wire-behavior change), round 1 on head a2a7097: no findings. (An earlier round 1 on ef4f230 also had none.)
Taking over this draft: its starter session went quiet about 3 days ago without a ## Decisions needed section, and the maintainer authorized the takeover (2026-10-31).
Merged origin/main (c04f777). Conflicts resolved in the lite-07 draft (kept the moq-dev/moq#7040 trim and swapped in this PR's relay rule), lite/subscriber.rs (main's wait! machine, with FrameIngest::new keeping this PR's version-free signature), model/group.rs, lite/ietf.rs, moq-tokio broadcast tests, and the C/C++ probes.
The group-ingest fuzz harness from moq-dev/moq#7320 now expects lite-05/06 tracks timed.
widened_max_age now expects a lite-06 copy's narrow reader to skip a re-offer as stale by media time, as lite-07's does.

Walkthrough
Lite-05 and Lite-06 receivers now retain timestamps, including send-time timestamps on untimed tracks, and mark timestamps unchecked when the protocol version does not provide media-time semantics. Relays preserve timestamps across versions. Lite-07 receivers check timestamps unless the IETF extension preserves unchecked provenance. JavaScript and Rust implementations, documentation, and tests now reflect these rules.
Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review a2a70
JavaScript clients that receive very large timestamps (above 2^53) over moq-lite 05/06 can have the group aborted, where before the timestamp was ignored. Typical media timestamps are far below this limit, so impact is limited to edge cases. The spec and docs also need small wording fixes. Resolve the decode limit before merging, or explicitly accept it.

No actionable bugs found. The direction is coherent: retain received timestamps across ingest, fetch, datagrams and relay publishing, while limiting the internal unchecked flag to rewind enforcement. Removing the timestamp-dropping branches is simpler than adding wire negotiation, and ignoring this per-copy flag in compatibility checks avoids rejecting equivalent timed copies across versions. The documented lite-07 rejection of relayed send-time rewinds is an explicit trade-off, not an overlooked regression.
Inspected Rust and JS changes with relevant surrounding code, protocol/migration text, and changed tests, including an independent Rust pass. Static review only; I did not run tests or interop checks, and have not independently verified the author's reported passes.

ℹ️ No critical issues. One question inline about JS/Rust resume parity.
Reviewed changes
Rust receive path. A lite-05/06 copy now sets the crate-private track::Info::unchecked instead of dropping the timescale; TrackState::neighbors skips the rewind check (as it already did for moq-transport properties). Frame, fetch, and datagram ingest all keep the timestamp they read.
Rust serve path.Info::lite_timescale/group::Consumer::lite_timescale are gone; TrackInfo::serve and Stamp::new use info.timescale on every version, including listings and TRACKS_ADD.
JS mirror.track.Info.ietf becomes @internal unchecked; lite-05/06 #toModelInfo sets unchecked and keeps the wire timescale; frameDecoder/readFrames lose the timed drop and liteTimescale is removed.
Specs/docs. Both drafts, doc/concept/moq-lite.md, doc/setup/upgrade.md, and the two MIGRATE.md notes are rewritten for pass-through.
Tests. Expectations reversed across moq-net, moq-tokio, moq-relay, moq-cli, the C/C++/Go/Python/JS interop clients, e2ee, and test/wasm; received_rewind.rs now covers a timed track across a lite-06/moq-transport hop, descending send times refused only by a lite-07 reader, and out-of-order lite-05/06 fetches. The completed quest file is deleted with its links.
The rename of track.Info.ietf to unchecked dropped the draft version
from the resume comparison, so JS would splice a moq-transport copy
beside a native one, or another draft's, where Rust's properties
equality refuses it. Restore ietf as compared provenance and keep
unchecked for lite-05/06 copies only, as in Rust.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Reviewed the update since ef4f230. No new actionable bugs found. Pullfrog's provenance concern is addressed: ietf survives normalization and participates in resume compatibility, while the lite-only unchecked flag remains excluded. Both still bypass rewind checks. Restoring the existing provenance field is a small, appropriate fix rather than adding special-case resume logic; the added tests distinguish rejected provenance changes from accepted unchecked-only changes.
Static inspection of the five changed files and relevant acceptance/compatibility paths; tests and interop were not run.
Landing summary: this PR passes moq-lite-05/06 timestamps through (unchecked) in Rust and JS, and a relay serves them and moq-transport timestamps on over every version, per the 2026-10-25 maintainer decision. The merge pass fixed pullfrog's finding in a2a7097: JS resume compares moq-transport provenance (ietf) again, as Rust compares properties, and only unchecked stays out of the comparison. just ci origin/main passed on that head inside nix develop, a Codex gpt-6-astra review reported no findings, and quest check passed. No decisions are open.

Reviewed changes
This run re-reviewed the delta since the prior pullfrog review (ef4f230): the JS-side restoration of moq-transport provenance in resume compatibility. The prior inline question (dropping ietf from JS resume compatibility) is addressed and its thread resolved.
ietf provenance restored and compared.track.Info regains the @internalietf (moq-transport draft) field and resume.tsINFO_FIELDS compares it again, so a moq-transport copy no longer splices beside a native or another draft's copy. This matches Rust's Info::eq over properties; unchecked stays excluded from the comparison.
Rewind skip matches Rust.Producer.#unchecked() now returns true for either unchecked or a set ietf, mirroring the info.unchecked || info.ietf().is_some() predicate in model/track.rs.
moq-transport subscriber.ietf/subscriber.ts sets ietf: version again instead of unchecked: true.
Tests.resume.test.ts routes the track-properties and moq-transport-provenance mismatch cases through one loop (both refused once the old copy runs out) and adds an unchecked-only difference that takes over; track.test.ts covers both fields surviving normalization and skipping the rewind check.
Verified locally: bun test src/resume.test.ts src/track.test.ts (328 pass, 0 fail) and bunx tsc --noEmit clean.

Limit the relay claim to versions that carry timestamps.
Lite01–04 cannot carry track timestamps. The version gates in js/net/src/lite/version.ts:599-611 and rs/moq-net/src/lite/version.rs:374-385 omit them. A reader using one of those versions will not receive the timestamps promised here. Qualify this claim and the matching claims in js/net/MIGRATE.md:156 and rs/moq-net/MIGRATE.md:372. As per coding guidelines, “State a claim's conditions with it: opt-in or experimental versions, and the paths it does not cover.”

Unless a negotiated extension specifies otherwise, a publisher MUST NOT start a timed Group's frame 0 earlier than that of any lower-sequence Group it publishes.
A receiver MAY check a received Group against this rule, refusing a violating Group's stream (STOP_SENDING) with TIMESTAMP_MISMATCH.
A relay that cannot vouch for a Track's timestamps, such as ones received over another protocol, MUST serve the Track untimed unless a negotiated extension identifies their unchecked provenance.
A relay serves a Track's timestamps on as it received them, including ones it did not check, unless a negotiated extension specifies otherwise.

Reconcile relay forwarding with the publisher rewind rule.
If a Lite05/06 peer fetches an older group later, that group's send-time timestamp can exceed a higher-sequence group's timestamp. Line 193 requires a relay to forward both timestamps unchanged. Without a negotiated extension, Line 191 prohibits the relay, as publisher, from publishing that timed sequence. State the relay exception in the publisher rule so an implementation can satisfy both requirements.

Accept the full wire timestamp range.
A valid Lite-05/06 timestamp can exceed Number.MAX_SAFE_INTEGER. For example, 10_000_000_000_000_000 nanoseconds fits the Rust and wire ranges, but Timestamp throws here. The subscriber then aborts the group. Previously, this path discarded the timestamp and delivered the frame. Support the wire range in the timestamp model. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

This run re-reviewed the delta since the prior pullfrog review (a2a7097): a merge of origin/main that resolved the timestamp-test conflicts and adapted the branch to main's refactors.
Base merge adapted to main's clock rename.moq_clock → kio::clock and #[moq_clock::test] → #[kio::test] across the Rust tests this PR touches; no moq_clock references remain.
Rust serve path kept its pass-through intent.TrackServeRun adopts main's ServeLoop::adopt / request.expect / known refactor while still setting info.unchecked = !version.has_media_time() on the accepted copy (info.clone() into adopt, then known.resolve(Ok(info))). FrameIngest::new call sites use the 3-arg signature and media_time is gone.
JS fetch refactor preserved the mirror.#fetchSetup follows main's alongside-TRACK fetch; #toModelInfo still keeps the wire timescale and sets unchecked for lite-05/06.
Removed the deleted test/wasm suite's expectations and refreshed the quest README (dropped announce-takeover, added ffi-ietf-run-end).
The prior inline question (JS resume dropping moq-transport provenance) remains addressed and its thread resolved.

Problem
moq-dev/moq#6150 made receivers drop every timestamp read over moq-lite-05/06, because an untimed origin stamps send times there. As a result, a lite-06 reader of a timed feed (such as a stats feed) saw untimed frames. moq-dev/moq#6300 also served moq-transport tracks to moq-lite untimed unless the
ietfextension was negotiated. Maintainer decision (2026-10-25): pass the timestamps through instead.Approach
track::Infogets back a crate-privateuncheckedflag. The lite subscriber sets it on a lite-05/06 copy.TrackState::neighborsskips the moq-dev/moq#5803 rewind check for unchecked or moq-transport-provenance tracks. Frame, fetch, and datagram ingest keep the timestamps they read.Info::lite_timescaleandgroup::Consumer::lite_timescaleare gone. Every lite hop serves the track's own timescale and timestamps, including to TRACKS_ADD, lite-07 without the extension, and lite-05/06. An untimed track on lite-05/06 still carries its send time in milliseconds, as published.@moq/netmirrors this. The@internaltrack.Infogainsunchecked, mirroring Rust's: lite-05/06 TRACK_INFO maps to a timed copy withunchecked, and the rewind check skips anuncheckedorietf(moq-transport) copy.frameDecoder/readFrameslose theirtimedflag, andliteTimescaleis gone.draft-lcurley-moq-lite(receiver text and changelog),draft-lcurley-moq-ietf(timestamps without the extension),doc/concept/moq-lite.md, anddoc/setup/upgrade.md.received_rewind.rsnow covers:.healthframe is untimed. A lite-06 browser publisher's untimed health track now reaches every reader with send times.Choices made without asking
track::Infoequality (RustPartialEq, JS resumecompatible) ignoresunchecked. It records how a copy arrived, not what it holds, so same-epoch copies over lite-06 and lite-07 still splice. Before this change they mismatched on timescale.Info.ietffield stays, since resume compares it as Rust comparesproperties: a moq-transport copy does not splice beside a native one or another draft's. An earlier head renamed it tounchecked, dropping that comparison; pullfrog caught it (review thread).has_media_timestays as the version predicate. It now means "setunchecked", andresolves_anchorskeeps requiring it.Impact
uncheckedis crate-private). In JS, the@internaltrack.Infogains an@internalunchecked.ietfextension) may be refused downstream. This cost was accepted in the quest.Alternatives
Infoequality derived. Simpler, but it would refuse a same-epoch lite-06 copy beside a lite-07 one.Checks
After merging origin/main (c04f777):
just ci origin/mainpasses insidenix develop, as doesjust test interop --all. The merge needed two follow-on fixes for code main added: the group-ingest fuzz harness (moq-dev/moq#7320) now expects lite-05/06 tracks timed, andwidened_max_age(moq-dev/moq#7168) now expects a lite-06 copy's narrow reader to skip a re-offer as stale by media time, as lite-07's does. After the provenance fix (a2a7097):

mechanical fix by codex / Codex:
Merged base; preserved timestamp intent across clock API rename, fetch pipeline refactor, and removed WASM suite.(head 91c72e0)Pullfrog's online review asked whether dropping
ietffrom JS resume compatibility was intended. It was not; fixed in a2a7097 (see Choices).Codex
gpt-6-astra, medium effort (quest review --deep, a wire-behavior change), round 1 on head a2a7097: no findings. (An earlier round 1 on ef4f230 also had none.)Follow-ups
