docs(drafts): trim moq-lite-07 to what a peer observes - #7040
An audit of the lite-07 wire changes between release and main found that much of the draft prescribes things no peer can observe or enforce:
The session error table lists seven moq-transport codes that only rs/moq-net/src/ietf/ and the JS IETF handshake raise. They entered it in moq-dev/moq#5800 because both protocols share one SessionError enum.
Roughly a dozen sentences say how a lite-07 endpoint maps onto lite-05/06 or moq-transport peers, such as Warm/Cold cost, the Max Age sentinel, untimed send times, END+START for RESTART, and code bridging. These are implementation choices, not lite-07 wire.
Relay internals are spelled out as MUSTs and SHOULDs, including per-reader queue collapse and drain rules, TRACK_INFO cache keys, upstream group requests, upstream group order, GOAWAY route costing, and refusal caching. So are deployment MUSTs on standby cost seeds (H * C < S) that no peer can check.
Setup Stream and Probe rules are restated, the Handshake section only points elsewhere, and the Rationale and Appendix B are stale.
Approach
Kept rules a peer can observe, and deleted or reduced the rest to the observable outcome. Announce and listing queues become "MAY coalesce changes not yet sent, and SYNCED follows no more events than the initial set". A publisher MAY, rather than MUST, reset an older Tracks Stream for the same Broadcast.
Removed the moq-transport-only session codes (MALFORMED_AUTH_TOKEN stays), the cross-version and bridge mapping rules, and the standby-ordering paragraph.
Compression in TRACK_INFO is no longer marked optional, since this draft is lite-07.
Changelog: trimmed the "earlier versions do X" clauses from in-progress lite-07 entries, and added bullets for the removals.
Hop ID and Spread Hash text is left for the routes rewrite.
Quests: time-addressing/lite07 now lists Wanted Group, the SUBSCRIBE_OK sequences, and the removal of Timescale 0 once every track is timed. routes reruns the moq-dev/moq#4196 bench before keeping Path Base/Path Keep on path-less ANNOUNCE.
Impact
Wire: no encoding change. Rules relaxed: coalescing is a MAY, and resetting an older Tracks Stream is a MAY. The Rust and JS implementations already satisfy both forms.
Draft: lite-07 no longer specifies interop with lite-05/06 or moq-transport. Implementations keep their mappings as implementation choices.
Public API: none.
Alternatives
Collect the version mappings in one "Earlier Versions" section. The maintainer chose deletion: the draft shouldn't over-specify multi-version handling.
Follow-ups
SUBSCRIBE_OK Group folds into moq-dev/moq#6951 (in progress). Conflicts are expected with moq-dev/moq#6996 on the lite-05/06 timestamp lines, which this PR deletes.
…ules
Drop the moq-transport-only session codes from the lite registry, the
moq-transport draft history, the empty Handshake section, and duplicated
Setup Stream and Probe level rules. Fix stale Rationale and Appendix B
claims. Record lite-07 gaps in the time-addressing and routes quests.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
No actionable bugs found in the changed documentation. Consolidating Setup and Probe rules in their owning sections is a sensible simplification: the required Setup stream and Report-only padding restriction remain explicit. The time-addressing follow-up aligns with the model's timed tracks and strictly increasing starts, and remeasuring compression before retaining its complexity is a sound direction.
Verification: static review of the diff, surrounding draft rules, and linked planning context; no builds, draft checks, benchmarks, or interoperability tests were run. This does not independently validate the claim that no implementation emits any removed error code.
The moq-lite draft changes session setup and error-code descriptions, Probe guidance, and related routing, subscription, and track rules. It revises changelog, compatibility, and security text. The cluster-routing plan records a measured saving from hop chains, requests a benchmark rerun with path-less ANNOUNCE, and makes removal of Path Base and Path Keep conditional. The time-addressing plan clarifies group addressing, timestamp requirements, expiry rules, and group-start ordering.
Priority: Low
Merge Risk: Low · up to 7de59
This is a documentation-only change that trims the draft to observable behavior. Two small follow-ups remain. The session-code table and the encoder should agree on which codes lite sends. The changelog should state that TRACK_INFO Compression is now required. Neither blocks merging, but both are worth fixing for spec accuracy.

No new actionable bugs found. Restricting this draft to lite-07's externally visible contract, rather than prescribing legacy adapters and relay data structures, is a reasonable direction. The relaxed queue rules retain bounded SYNCED delivery and listing validity checks; making TRACK_INFO Compression unconditional matches the draft's version scope. These are deliberate specification relaxations, not just equivalent wording changes.

No new actionable bugs found in the delta since 0179661 (base unchanged). The SYNCED edits distinguish the event cap from completion: Announce retains its initial-set completion rule, and Tracks explicitly requires every initial Track still listed. Removing obsolete relay policies from the changelog makes it consistent with the narrowed draft. These address the existing comments r4398641780 and r4398641788.
Direction: this remains a focused clarification of observable protocol behavior. The previous review had no findings; I found no new evidence to reopen the author's response on the unchanged compression-benchmark quest.
Verification: static delta and surrounding draft inspection only. No draft build, tests, benchmarks, or implementation-conformance checks were run.

Convert the lite-07 group fields to starts.
The plan says that lite-07 has no group sequence numbers, but it retains sequence-valued Wanted Group, Group, and Largest Group. The model also says that Demand::wanted and other sequence + 1 consumers must follow previous-start links instead.
A sequence-to-start mapping would preserve the old contract, but it would violate the model's removal of producer-side group numbers. Update the draft, codecs, and consumers to use starts for these fields.

Invalidate cached TRACK_INFO when an announcement is retracted.
ANNOUNCE_RESTART can replace the broadcast at a path, and new requests must use the replacement. However, the draft still permits reusing one fetched TRACK_INFO lookup and skipping the Track Stream after TRACKS_ADD. A subscriber can therefore parse the replacement broadcast with stale properties, such as an old Timescale, and reject valid frames or interpret their timestamps incorrectly.
Suggested fix
The properties are fixed for one track, not for the path it arrived on: a different broadcast reaching the same path brings its own, so TRACK_INFO learned through a retracted announcement no longer applies.
+Anything cached against a path, on either side, is therefore scoped to the announcement that carried it and MUST be discarded when that announcement is retracted.+If FRAME messages cannot be decoded against the cached TRACK_INFO, which a race with a retraction can leave stale, the subscriber MUST reset the affected stream with a protocol violation and re-request it.

Probe target scoped to Increase: agreed. Rather than scope it, I'm dropping the clause "the publisher MUST treat each PROBE as a new target to attempt". The Increase sentence already pads to "the most recent target bitrate", and Report already reads and ignores the target.
Invalidate cached TRACK_INFO on retraction: not restoring. This PR removed that text on purpose: how a subscriber keys or discards its cache is internal and not observable. The draft keeps the observable outcome: TRACK_INFO learned through a retracted announcement no longer applies. A FRAME that fails to decode is already covered by the general malformed-GROUP/FRAME rule.
Convert lite-07 group fields to starts: out of scope. This PR only adds those fields to quest/m1/time-addressing/lite07.md, whose plan already says they "change with the rest" to address by start. The draft, codec, and Demand::wanted changes belong to that quest's own PR.

Reviewed 7de5957 against the last reviewed d56a877; base unchanged. No new actionable bugs found.
Removing the unconditional PROBE target-attempt clause resolves the Report/Increase contradiction noted in the existing review. Increase still targets the most recent bitrate, while Report ignores targets and only reports. Deleting the conflicting duplicate rule is the simpler direction. My previous review had no findings to carry forward.
Verification: static review of this one-line delta, surrounding Probe rules, and the author's responses only. No draft build, tests, or implementation-conformance checks run.
d56a877: Announce and Tracks now state the SYNCED event count as a cap ("sends no more events before SYNCED than ..."), and the completion rule stays explicit. Dropped the stale relay-policy clauses (upstream frame-0 widening, descending upstream order) and the KEY_VALUE_FORMATTING_ERROR rationale from the lite-07 changelog.
7de5957: dropped the Probe clause that required every publisher, Report included, to attempt each target.
Declined, with replies: a numeric threshold for the routes benchmark (CodeRabbit withdrew it), restoring the TRACK_INFO cache-invalidation rules, and implementing start-addressed group fields here (that belongs to quest/m1/time-addressing/lite07.md).
just drafts check and quest check pass. Codex and the OpenAI review cleared 7de5957 with no findings.

Map the removed shared session codes to INTERNAL_ERROR in lite encoding.
The head session table in drafts/draft-lcurley-moq-lite.md no longer lists INVALID_REQUEST_ID (0x4), INVALID_PATH (0x8), AUTH_TOKEN_CACHE_OVERFLOW (0x13), UNKNOWN_AUTH_TOKEN_ALIAS (0x17), INVALID_AUTHORITY (0x19), or TOO_MANY_REQUEST_UPDATES (0x1B). The shared Rust and JavaScript registries still define all six. The lite encoder passes these values through unchanged. A lite close that carries one of them, for example a received shared code returned through from_transport, can therefore send a code the lite table does not define. Lite should send INTERNAL_ERROR for these values, as it already does for unknown codes that are not application codes.
