build(ffi): define moq-ffi's default build once - #7055
Finishes quest/m1/ffi-build-flags.md: moq-ffi's default build is now defined once, as the cargo build-ffi alias in .cargo/config.toml (build --locked --package moq-ffi --features openh264). A build with other features gets its own target directory.
moq-dev/moq#6716 found that a cdylib's file name carries no feature hash, so builds with different features overwrite each other's libmoq_ffi.so. Besides the five call sites the quest listed, this PR found two more writers that had already drifted:
sh/api-diff/ffi.sh built debug moq-ffi withoutopenh264 into target/debug, the directory kt, swift, go, and cpp read from.
sh/size/collect.sh built --no-default-features into target/release, which collides with CMake's release build and MOQ_FFI_PROFILE=release.
Changes
.cargo/config.toml: adds the build-ffi alias, with a comment on the rule: callers add a profile, --target, or --lib, never features.
Callers that now use the alias: sh/kt/generate.sh, sh/swift/check.sh, sh/go/stage.sh, cpp/moq/cmake/moq-ffi.cmake (covers c, cpp, obs), rs/moq-ffi/build.sh (host and cargo-ndk paths), sh/dart/generate.sh plus dart/moq_ffi/hook/build.dart (build-ffi --features testing), sh/api-diff/ffi.sh, and just rs android.
Cargo resolves aliases from the working directory, not from --manifest-path. So every shell caller runs it in a (cd "$WORKSPACE_DIR" && …) subshell, and the Dart hook passes workingDirectory. A caller outside the checkout fails loudly with no such command: build-ffi.
CI selection: sh/dispatch.sh now runs the kt, swift, go, dart, c, cpp, and obs_compile checks when .cargo/config.toml changes. release-gate.yml adds the same path to its c, cpp, interop, obs, release-dart-ffi, release-go-ffi, and release-kt-lib filters, since the alias now defines what those build.
Updates sh/dart/build.test.py for the new invocation and the server_smoke.py usage comment, and removes the quest and its link from quest/m1/README.md.
Choices made (please review)
I chose a Cargo alias over a shared shell helper. CMake and the Dart hook also run on Windows, where they can't source a bash file. All three kinds of caller already shell out to Cargo. A missing alias fails loudly.
cargo-ndk goes through the alias too. I read cargo-ndk v4.1.2's source, the version CI pins. It passes the subcommand through to cargo unchanged, and build.sh keeps --manifest-path, so it finds the package the same way as before. I couldn't run it locally because cargo-ndk isn't installed. The Android workflow (just rs android) exercises it on this PR.
api-diff now compiles OpenH264. That makes its CI job compile the vendored C++ once more. In return, a local just api-diff ffi stops replacing the binding builds' library, and it reuses the cached build when there is one. The UniFFI metadata it reads is the same either way.
I left sh/swift/simulator.sh alone. It runs cargo tree and cargo check with --features openh264, which build nothing into the target dir. It is checking that specific feature on purpose.
I left pyproject.toml alone. maturin can't use a Cargo alias, and py builds into its own target dir.
Checks
cargo build-ffi from kt/, the CMake -P script mode, and cargo build-ffi --lib (api-diff) all resolve to one fresh unit. Cargo reported fresh: true after sh/kt/generate.sh built it.
bash sh/kt/generate.sh and bash sh/dart/generate.sh both pass.
I ran rs/moq-ffi/build.sh against a stub cargo for the host, --no-default-features, and Android. Each passed the expected alias, --target-dir, and working directory.
python3 sh/dart/build.test.py, python3 sh/gh/ffi.test.py, and python3 sh/dispatch-query.test.py pass.
shellcheck, shfmt, actionlint, dart format, and quest check pass.
I ran quest gate just ci origin/main, which selects every module because .github/ changed. Every module passed except check flake. Under CI_STRICT, it tried to build the github-runner VM images and hit unshare: write failed /proc/self/uid_map: Operation not permitted, because this host's Nix builder can't create user namespaces. Without CI_STRICT, the dispatcher's own probe skips that check. The flake's other checks, package-source-assets and github-runner-vm-config, build when run on their own.
Suggested follow-ups
Dart's checkout build is isolated only because of --target <host>. Giving it an explicit --target-dir would make that deliberate rather than accidental. It touches the hook, generate.sh, check.sh, and bench.sh together.
kt, swift, and go repeat the same block for the profile, the Cargo build, the target dir, and the cdylib path. A shared sh/ffi/host.sh that prints the library path would remove about 30 lines from each.

Walkthrough
Adds a build-ffi Cargo alias for the locked moq-ffi build with openh264. Updates build scripts and tools to use the alias. Builds with no default features use a separate target directory. CI path filters now include .cargo/config.toml. Removes the quest text about centralizing FFI build flags.

[P2] Resolve the library path in the same working directory as the build — sh/kt/generate.sh:40–43 (also the corresponding changes in sh/go/stage.sh and sh/swift/check.sh). The build now runs from WORKSPACE_DIR, but the following cargo metadata still runs from the caller's directory. For example, cd kt && CARGO_TARGET_DIR=build bash ../sh/kt/generate.sh builds into <repo>/build but looks for the library in <repo>/kt/build. This fails on a clean checkout or, worse, copies an older library if one exists there. Run metadata from the same workspace directory too (or capture Cargo's emitted artifact path), and add a non-root/relative-target-dir regression case.
Direction: a Cargo alias is a sensible shared definition for shell, CMake and Dart callers; separating minimal artifacts avoids feature collisions without another build-wrapper layer. The working-directory change needs consistent artifact discovery.
Verification: static review of the diff and relevant build/staging code only. I did not run builds or tests, including cargo-ndk or Windows paths.
Re the P2 review finding: agreed, and fixed in 8eb91ab. sh/kt/generate.sh, sh/swift/check.sh, and sh/go/stage.sh now cd "$WORKSPACE_DIR" before the build. So cargo build-ffi and the cargo metadata that finds the library run in the same directory, and a relative CARGO_TARGET_DIR resolves the same way for both. Nothing later in those scripts depended on the caller's directory: go's --output is made absolute first, and swift already cds into swift/ before swift test. rs/moq-ffi/build.sh already passed the metadata's absolute --target-dir to the build, and sh/dart/generate.sh hard-codes $WORKSPACE_DIR/target, as it did before this PR.
I didn't add a regression case. None of these three scripts has a test harness, and with one working directory there's no second resolution left to drift. I re-ran sh/kt/generate.sh from kt/ and sh/go/stage.sh from the root, and both pass.
The previous P2 finding is fixed: Kotlin, Go and Swift now run the build and metadata lookup from the same workspace directory, so relative CARGO_TARGET_DIR resolves consistently. Go also normalizes its output directory before changing directories, preserving caller-relative output paths.
No new actionable bugs found in this update. This is a small, direct fix that keeps the shared Cargo alias approach simple.
Verification: compared the one-commit, three-file delta against the last published review with an unchanged base, and inspected surrounding path/staging logic. Static review only; I did not run builds or tests. The suggested non-root/relative-target-dir regression test is not included in this delta.

sh/api-diff/ffi.sh now builds the FFI interface with cargo build-ffi. (raw.githubusercontent.com) A release backport that changes only .cargo/config.toml therefore skips API diff, even if the alias removes exported features. Add .cargo/config.toml to this filter so the release gate checks that interface.

No new actionable bugs found in the one-line update since 8eb91ab. Adding .cargo/config.toml to the release gate's api-diff filter correctly addresses CodeRabbit's existing selection finding: changes to the shared FFI build alias now select the API compatibility job. The earlier build/metadata working-directory fix remains unchanged.
Direction: the narrow filter addition is the simplest appropriate fix; no extra workflow machinery is needed. Verification was static inspection of the commit delta, filter and dependent job wiring against an unchanged base. I did not run workflows or tests.
The OpenAI review's P2 finding on 4800ad7: cargo metadata resolved the library from the caller's directory. Fixed in 8eb91ab: kt, swift, and go now run the build and the lookup from WORKSPACE_DIR. No regression test was added (reason in the earlier reply).
CodeRabbit's finding on 8eb91ab: the release gate's api-diff filter didn't cover .cargo/config.toml. Fixed in 520cf5b.
Codex had been stuck on 8eb91ab since 09:19 UTC. After one @codex review, it reviewed 520cf5b with no findings. The OpenAI review of this head also found nothing.
CI passes (10/10), quest check --base origin/main passes, and it merges into main cleanly. The design is unchanged across 3 review rounds.
The PR body's "Choices made" section is still accurate. Its suggested follow-ups (an explicit --target-dir for Dart, a shared sh/ffi/host.sh helper) go to /quest-plan.

Update the Dart check recorder to recognize the Cargo alias
When just dart check runs, its record_cargo() wrapper in sh/dart/check.sh still intercepts only invocations whose first argument is build. Switching the generator and hook to build-ffi therefore bypasses both environment recording and the hook's --verbose injection. If the hook rebuilds the library, the drift check subsequently reads nonexistent generate.env and hook.env files and cannot report the differing variables or Cargo's rebuild reasons. Update the recorder predicate alongside these callers so the existing rebuild diagnostic remains functional.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Fixed in 162466d: the recorder in sh/dart/check.sh now matches build-ffi. Both callers under it, generate.sh and the hook, use the alias, so it again records both environments and passes --verbose to the hook. just dart check passes.
The recorder matched only `cargo build`, so after the switch to the
alias it skipped the environment snapshot and the hook's --verbose,
leaving the rebuild diagnostic without inputs.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
No new actionable bugs found. The one-line change in sh/dart/check.sh:71 fixes Codex's existing recorder finding: both host callers use build-ffi, so the wrapper again records their environments and adds --verbose for the hook's rebuild diagnostics. The earlier working-directory and release API-filter fixes remain unchanged.
Direction: matching the actual shared alias is the simplest appropriate fix; no additional wrapper machinery is needed.
Verification: static inspection of the recorder, generator, hook and diagnostic consumers. Compared against the last published review at 520cf5b, separating the equivalent main-branch merge from this one-line fix. I did not run builds or tests.
Re-landing after the merge queue dropped this PR (failed_checks, run 40725094730).
The failure was a flake unrelated to this PR.check toml failed with ERROR operation failed error=No such file or directory. taplo globs every *.toml and then reads each match. Meanwhile test gh ran sh/rs/test-lints.test.py, which creates and deletes a fixture .tmp/tmpXXXX/Cargo.toml inside the checkout (confirmed with strace). The race has existed on main since 8eedc45e10. moq-dev/moq#7114 (open) fixes it by excluding .tmp/ from taplo; I added this evidence there. Until fix(ci): exclude scratch trees from TOML formatting #7114 lands, the race can still hit queue runs.
Merged main (98f362f). The GitHub conflict was the quest/m1/README.md link list, which the local quest merge driver resolved. Neither moq-dev/moq#7044 (merged) nor moq-dev/moq#7046 (open) overlaps this PR's files.
Fixed Codex's finding (162466d): sh/dart/check.sh's Cargo recorder now matches build-ffi, so the Dart rebuild diagnostic gets its env snapshots and --verbose again. just dart check, taplo format --check, just gh test, and quest check pass locally. The OpenAI review of 162466d found nothing new.
