feat(relay): count inflated bytes and prove compressed catalog fan-out end to end - #7162
The epic still owed two things: an end-to-end proof through moq-relay, and a guide. The proof: a Rust publisher's compressed catalog.json reaches a JS player over lite-07 compressed, and lite-06 and plain IETF subscribers inflated, from one inflate on the relay. Existing coverage stopped short of that. The raw-track compress tail lanes cross lite-07 and lite-06 one reader at a time, and the moq-net integration tests use mock transports. Nothing checked the relay's inflate count, and the relay had no way to report it: /metrics didn't export the inflated counter moq-net already keeps.
Approach
Relay metric./metrics now exports moq_relay_inflated_bytes_total{tier,role}, moq-net's existing inflated counter. A unit test has two plain egress sessions read one compressed group and checks the counter equals one copy.
Interop lane: compressed catalog. A new Rust example, interop-catalog, publishes one hang catalog on catalog.json with hang::Catalog::default_track_info() (so it is compressed) through a moq_json snapshot producer, over moq-lite-07-wip alone. Three native JS readers (catalog.ts) then read it at the same time, pinned to moq-lite-07-wip, moq-lite-06, and moq-transport-22. Each uses Json.Snapshot.Consumer with Catalog.RootSchema, which is how @moq/watch reads the catalog. The lane checks:
each reader decoded the catalog;
only the lite-07 reader saw compress: true;
the relay negotiated exactly those versions;
the relay's moq_relay_inflated_bytes_total grew by exactly the catalog's inflated size. The publisher reports that size from a local plain read.
It runs for node and bun in the auto pass, after the existing compress lanes.
Harness. In-tree runs give the relay an [internal] listener on a reserved port and set [stats] enabled = true. Without stats the relay's registry is Registry::disabled(), so every traffic counter on /metrics stays empty. Compat runs (released relays) are unchanged.
Guide. New page doc/concept/compression.md covers when to set compress, what each session receives (lite-07; IETF with Flate, which only Rust offers; everything else inflated), and what it costs the relay (one shared inflated copy per group, billed to the cache, with the metric to watch). The moq-lite paragraph shrinks to a pointer, and hang/stats links go to the page. doc/bin/relay/http.md lists the new series and now says session-fed counters need [stats] enabled.
Quests.quest rm removed the epic and its list links. Inline mentions now point at moq-dev/moq#7046 (the migration) or the new doc page (the concept).
Impact
Wire: none.
Relay: new Prometheus series moq_relay_inflated_bytes_total{tier,role}. Additive.
API: none. The new example and JS client are test-only.
Choices made without asking
The "JS player" is a native JS reader. It runs the same catalog consumer as @moq/watch (node and bun) rather than headless Chromium, which keeps the lane fast and deterministic. The browser matrix already reads catalog.json on every pass.
A dedicated catalog publisher, not the moq CLI. The CLI's catalog gets republished as renditions and estimates arrive, so the inflate total would vary from run to run. One fixed snapshot gives an exact expected count.
Concurrent readers with an exact byte count. I chose this over sequential readers checking "first > 0, then 0". It exercises the shared copy under concurrency and catches a double inflate inside a single read.
Stats on for every in-tree lane's relay. Other clients filter announcements by exact path, and the default and --tail passes are green with it.
The guide lives under doc/concept/, next to moq-lite and stats, rather than doc/setup/.
Checks
just check passes. A first run hit an unrelated @moq/net failure, "a server refuses a client offering only IETF versions in the moql SETUP" (an unhandled rejection). It's selected here only because a workspace client changed, the open moq-dev/moq#7083 targets it, and it passed on rerun.
just test interop --tail (Rust plus node and bun) passes, including both new compressed catalog cells: moq-lite-07-wip moq-lite-06 moq-transport-22; one 424-byte inflate.
The default just test interop passes with the relay's stats on.
cargo test -p moq-relay --lib internal::tests::metrics passes, and quest check --base origin/main passes. I re-checked the build and relay tests after merging main.
Not run locally: --all and --versions ietf, since the lane runs only in auto.
Suggested follow-ups
Relay /metrics is empty without [stats].moq_stats::Producer::new returns Registry::disabled() when no origin is configured, so a relay with [internal] but without [stats] enabled = true reports no traffic, session, wire, or control counters. Keeping a live registry whenever /metrics is served, and publishing broadcasts only with stats.enabled, would remove that trap. This PR only documents it.
JS does not offer the IETF Flate extension. JS-to-moq-transport sessions therefore always get the inflated copy. That's low priority while lite-07 carries compression for JS, but it's the remaining gap in the "what each session receives" table.
A Rust publisher's compressed hang catalog fans out through moq-relay to
native JS readers on lite-07 (compressed), lite-06, and moq-transport-22
(inflated) at once, and the relay's new moq_relay_inflated_bytes_total
must grow by exactly one copy of the catalog. Adds a compressed-tracks
guide under doc/concept and finishes the compress epic.

Compressed tracks in moq-net
feat(relay): count inflated bytes and prove compressed catalog fan-out end to end
Oct 28, 2026
The changes add a compressed-tracks guide and update related documentation and quest links. The relay now reports inflated payload bytes through moq_relay_inflated_bytes_total. The interop harness adds a compressed-catalog test with a Rust publisher and native JavaScript readers using three protocol versions. The test checks catalog data, compression metadata, negotiated versions, publisher acknowledgment, and the relay counter.
Priority: Normal
Merge Risk: Low · up to d0a04
The compression and metrics documentation can mislead operators about protocol support, validation, and relay costs. The change is mergeable with awareness of these documentation issues.

It is specific and descriptive. It omits the compression guide and quest removal, which is acceptable because the title need not cover every detail. #7173 replaced `request(path, { announced: true })` with `follow(path)` in JS,
and #7172 renamed Rust's `request_broadcast` to `request`.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The merge queue dropped this at 52112d1 on failed_checks: run 40805111210 failed @moq/interop-native typecheck because catalog.ts still passed { announced: true }, which moq-dev/moq#7173 removed from request. After merging main, the Rust test in rs/moq-relay/src/internal.rs also needed request_broadcast renamed to request, after moq-dev/moq#7172.
d0a046e merges main with no conflicts and moves both call sites to the new names (origin.follow(path) in JS, egress.request(path, None) in Rust). Locally, just check passes, and interop.sh --tail passes the compressed-catalog lanes for rust → js-native-node and js-native-bun (one 424-byte inflate).
Re-landing d0a046e. The queue failure was a semantic conflict with main's request/follow renames (moq-dev/moq#7173, moq-dev/moq#7172), not a flake. It's fixed in d0a046e: local just check and the compressed-catalog interop lanes pass, CI is green, Codex gave the new head a 👍, and quest check is clean. main has since gained moq-dev/moq#7189 and moq-dev/moq#7191, which only touch js/watch and quests, so I didn't merge main again.

Include received compressed datagrams in the metric definition.
The counter also includes compressed datagrams inflated on ingress, even when the downstream session carries compression. The datagrams_meter_the_bytes_on_the_wire test checks this case. Update this description and the Prometheus HELP text in rs/moq-relay/src/internal.rs so operators can interpret the counter correctly. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Include negotiated moq-transport hops.
Compressed bytes can also cross a moq-transport hop when both peers negotiate Flate. The integration test covers a moq-transport-18 to moq-transport-22 relay path without lite-07. Correct this sentence and the same claim in doc/concept/moq-lite.md. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Clarify when the relay checks inflated size.
The relay checks the output size when it inflates a frame. A compressed reader can receive the stored slice without that check, and a failed plain read does not abort the stored group. Do not imply that the relay rejects the group for every reader. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
