fix(ietf): cancel an unclaimed fill head when a subscription ends - #7382
When the publisher ended a subscription with SUBSCRIPTION_ENDED while a fill head was still unclaimed, Rust's moq-transport subscriber finished that head (Fill::end). The group can still be open upstream, so a reader saw a clean end for a group it only got a prefix of. The JS subscriber already cancels in this case, since moq-dev/moq#7089.
Change
rs/moq-net/src/ietf/subscriber.rs: after PUBLISH_DONE settles, the subscriber calls Fill::end only on TRACK_ENDED. Any other end aborts the head with that end's error. A head still being written when this happens is cancelled when it lands (Fill::Done → install cancels).
Docs on Fill::Ready, Fill::Ended, Fill::release, and Fill::end now say that only a track end publishes the head.
Deletes quest/m1/ietf-fill-end-cancel.md and its link.
Testing
New an_unclaimed_head_finishes_only_when_the_track_ends (draft 18, simulated clock, deterministic). A joining-FETCH head lands whole with no tail to claim it, then PUBLISH_DONE ends the subscription. On TRACK_ENDED the group ends cleanly. On SUBSCRIPTION_ENDED (0x3) it errors. I checked that the SUBSCRIPTION_ENDED case fails when the old fill.end() is put back.
quest gate just check passes.
Choices made without asking
The abort error. The head is aborted with the PUBLISH_DONE's own end error, the same one the track copy gets, rather than a generic Error::Cancel. A head that is still being written gets Error::Cancel when it lands, as other teardowns already do.
The end statuses this covers. It applies to every non-TRACK_ENDED end, not only 0x3. That matches the existing track handling, where only TRACK_ENDED finishes the copy.
The test's draft. The test runs only on draft 18. SUBSCRIPTION_ENDED doesn't exist in draft 22, and the change does not depend on the draft.
Since then, every commit only merges main, so the review carries over:
158c5f2 merged main. The quest merge driver resolved its only conflict, in the quest/m1/README.md link list.
e9e3a56, the land fixer's merge, followed the moq_clock::test to kio::test rename and kept both sides of the doc-comment conflicts.
56bf8fb merges main again. Git merged it locally without conflicts. The diff against main is still this PR's three files.
Checks on 56bf8fb: quest gate just rs test -p moq-net passes, which is nextest with clippy as the wrapper (3222 passed, including an_unclaimed_head_finishes_only_when_the_track_ends). cargo fmt --all --check and quest check --base origin/main pass too.
Land ejection (18:20 batch, test rs failed): this PR's Rust did not cause it. Its only Rust change is in moq-net, and those tests and clippy pass on the merged head. The same batch held moq-dev/moq#7366, which later fixed its own Tokio-clock clippy ban in 44a8697 ("bound tenant matrix waits on kio::clock"). An earlier batch was ejected for the same reason, since test(relay): tenant matrix on Tokio and io_uring; refuse dot-segment paths #7366 failed to compile after the clock rename.
CodeRabbit's thread (abort with the publisher's error on error statuses): refuted and resolved (reply). Every PUBLISH_DONE status other than TRACK_ENDED already reaches fill.abort(err) through tracks::listing_end. The arm it targets is a request-stream failure that comes before any PUBLISH_DONE, and remove_subscribe already cancels the head there.
Pullfrog's check fails because of a billing outage, not this change.
Only TRACK_ENDED makes an unclaimed head its whole group. Any other end,
such as draft-18 SUBSCRIPTION_ENDED, leaves the group open upstream, so
the Rust subscriber now aborts the head instead of finishing it, as the
JS subscriber does since #7089.

Rust cancels an unclaimed fill head when a subscription ends
fix(ietf): cancel an unclaimed fill head when a subscription ends
Oct 30, 2026
The subscriber now calls Fill::end only after a clean listing_end result. For other outcomes, it aborts the fill head with the reported error. Updated comments describe how termination outcomes affect an unclaimed head. A test checks that TRACK_ENDED completes the group and that SUBSCRIPTION_ENDED causes the head read to fail. The related quest entry and plan document were removed.
Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 6fa10
Non-track endings now cancel incomplete heads. A stronger error assertion is recommended but does not block merging.

No actionable findings in the changed code. The fill now follows the same end classification as its track: listing_end succeeds only for TRACK_ENDED. Other statuses abort a ready head, while an active head transitions to Done so its later installation cancels rather than finishes it. TRACK_ENDED retains the existing late-head completion behavior, and the stream-settling logic is unchanged.
The new draft-18 regression distinguishes a readable prefix followed by an error from a clean group end. Also inspected the existing late-head installation and clean-track-end tests.
Scope and limits: GitHub-only static review of the full diff and surrounding status, fill, and settle paths. No build or tests were run; the new regression directly covers a ready, unclaimed draft-18 head rather than every timing or draft combination.

Assert the subscription's end error in the SUBSCRIPTION_ENDED case.
The false arm checks only end.is_err(). Any error passes, including Error::Cancel. The suggested matches!(end, Err(Error::Remote(3))) pattern type-checks in this module. Use it so the test fails if the head ends with the wrong error.

Update the false arm in `an_unclaimed_head_finishes_only_when_the_track_ends` to
assert that the result is the expected remote subscription-ended error,
`Error::Remote(3)`, rather than accepting any error. Preserve the existing
successful-end assertion for the track-ended case.

Review
mechanical fix by quest land watch:
merged main at 1f02db73afd41b484ace6d71c692d16edbea2fd4 with the quest merge driver(head 6fa10e5)quest review --base origin/main, round 1).main, so the review carries over:main. Thequestmerge driver resolved its only conflict, in thequest/m1/README.mdlink list.moq_clock::testtokio::testrename and kept both sides of the doc-comment conflicts.mainagain. Git merged it locally without conflicts. The diff againstmainis still this PR's three files.quest gate just rs test -p moq-netpasses, which is nextest with clippy as the wrapper (3222 passed, includingan_unclaimed_head_finishes_only_when_the_track_ends).cargo fmt --all --checkandquest check --base origin/mainpass too.test rsfailed): this PR's Rust did not cause it. Its only Rust change is inmoq-net, and those tests and clippy pass on the merged head. The same batch held moq-dev/moq#7366, which later fixed its own Tokio-clock clippy ban in 44a8697 ("bound tenant matrix waits on kio::clock"). An earlier batch was ejected for the same reason, since test(relay): tenant matrix on Tokio and io_uring; refuse dot-segment paths #7366 failed to compile after the clock rename.fill.abort(err)throughtracks::listing_end. The arm it targets is a request-stream failure that comes before any PUBLISH_DONE, andremove_subscribealready cancels the head there.(Written by Claude Opus 5.5)
