fix(net): finish the browser backend baseline on moq-transport-22 - #7135
Nightly hit two bugs in the IETF cell, both between a JS publisher and the Rust relay.
1. Timed objects arrived without timestamps (the MoqError.Internal failure in run 40698329026). Already fixed on main, so this PR no longer changes it. When the relay filled a cache miss, its FETCH sent INCLUDE_PROPERTIES=0. The JS publisher then sent objects without Timestamps, and the relay treated them as a malformed track and aborted it. On main, the relay's range FETCH (moq-dev/moq#6999) and its resumed SUBSCRIBE (moq-dev/moq#7085) both ask for properties on a timed track, so the objects come stamped.
2. The relay sometimes FETCHed a group head its own subscription was already bringing (an intermittent hang). When the relay subscribes partway through a group, its upstream SUBSCRIBE also asks for that group's head. A downstream reader that wanted the same head also queued a cache-miss FETCH. If the FETCH's objects arrived first, the relay cached the group as fetched. It then refused the live tail stream that ends the group as duplicate, and live readers waited on the group until the sample timed out. Locally this happened about once every one to three focused runs (216 samples each).
A cache miss for the joined group waits until the subscription's own head arrives or its request settles. Then the cache answers the miss.
If the head request fails, the miss still falls back to a FETCH.
Only that group waits. serve_fill splits it off into its own run, as it already does for the live group. Fill::next_run_except serves every other owed run first, so older history is FETCHed right away.
The wait follows the subscription's current fill, including one a widening requested.
The wait ends as soon as no reader wants the group or the track aborts.
Choices made without asking
The relay waits for the subscription's head instead of letting the tail stream join a group a FETCH already cached. Joining would have meant one producer per group with two owners. Waiting removes the extra FETCH altogether.
A head that never arrives costs only its own group. CodeRabbit asked for a fallback FETCH when the fill stream resets before its header. I declined it in the thread. The Fill docs already accept that cost, and a FETCH there would bring back the duplicate race. A reader that gives up on the group releases the wait.
While a widening's REQUEST_OK is outstanding, every miss waits for it. Until the answer names the group, the relay doesn't know which group the new fill will head. The wait is one control round trip, and cancellation still ends it.
A fill that main requests during TRACK_STATUS (moq-dev/moq#7328) does no head wait. That path has no subscription, so no head is on its way.
The nightly epic is sized [S] and stays an epic. This PR removes its last child. Its README still holds its own work (multi-step jobs continue past a failed step, and a scheduled run is confirmed to pass), so quest check needs a size there. I didn't flatten it into a single file.
Impact
Public API: none.
Wire: no message format changes. The Rust relay sends fewer FETCHes: none for a group head its own SUBSCRIBE is already bringing. Neither publisher changes, so fix(net): honor the Track Properties opt-out on IETF SUBSCRIBE #7085's INCLUDE_PROPERTIES=0 rule still holds on both.
Decisions
Where the @moq/net fix ships. Decided 2026-10-28 (maintainer): ✅ no bump and no backport. This is now moot, since the PR no longer changes JS.
The JS publisher half contradicted main.moq-dev/moq#7085 implemented the maintainer's 2026-10-27 decision: an INCLUDE_PROPERTIES=0 SUBSCRIBE or FETCH gets no TIMESCALE and unstamped objects. This PR's old fix 1 made the JS publisher stamp anyway. Decided 2026-11-01 (maintainer):
Recorded in the design change comment. The quest file this PR deletes has no Plan left to record it in. quest/m0/backport-fill-head-race.md now notes it.
cargo nextest run -p moq-net --all-features passed 3309 tests. That includes this PR's regression tests:
a_miss_waits_for_the_subscriptions_own_fill
a_miss_is_answered_by_the_head_its_fill_lands
a_miss_for_older_history_skips_the_fill_wait
a_miss_follows_the_fill_a_widening_requested
a_run_passes_over_a_skipped_group
Still needed on today's main: with serve_fill's wait disabled, a_miss_waits_for_the_subscriptions_own_fill, a_miss_is_answered_by_the_head_its_fill_lands and a_miss_follows_the_fill_a_widening_requested fail. In each, main still sends a cache-miss FETCH for the head its own SUBSCRIBE is bringing. moq-dev/moq#7625, moq-dev/moq#7631 and moq-dev/moq#7382 don't change that path.
cargo nextest run -p moq-relay passed 420 tests.
quest check --base origin/main passed for 547 documents.
I didn't rerun just test wasm-baseline --uniffi on this head. It passed all 411 samples on earlier heads, but those still had the JS fix. Without it, bug 1 depends on main's relay-side fix, which nightly will exercise.
Merge history
2026-10-29 to 2026-11-01: several merges of main. They resolved conflicts with moq-dev/moq#7204, moq-dev/moq#7036 (Fill::next became Fill::wanted, so this PR's helper is wanted_except), moq-dev/moq#7322 (Fill::Failed means no head is pending) and moq-dev/moq#7284.
2026-11-01: merged main at bf4e726f66, then de6c6d703e. serve_fill takes main's Later<Option<Timescale>> along with this PR's heading. main's TRACK_STATUS fill passes None. The new tests use kio::test, matching main's move away from moq_clock::test. The JS files went back to main in the same merge commit.
2026-11-02: merged main at 41f60ec46e (b9d8633d91). It resolved without hand edits, since the quest merge driver handles the link lists. Removing this quest left the nightly epic with no children, so its README is now its remaining work and is sized [S] (5ff6e7ee60). Auto-merge, left on from the old landing flow, is disabled. The PR goes back in the queue at the reviewed head.
Review
Reviewer: Codex (quest review), gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort, against origin/main at 622d7bc0c5. The session is new: the earlier post-design-change session (round 1 on d013b57502, no findings) belongs to a local branch another worktree still has checked out, so it couldn't be resumed. It had no open findings to carry over.
Round 1, reviewed head 5ff6e7ee609bcaa53e9f989be378cd2dd8caafc0: no findings.
Earlier sessions: Codex found that the Rust publisher should also stamp objects under INCLUDE_PROPERTIES=0, as the old JS change did. Refuted. It contradicts the maintainer's 2026-10-27 decision in quest/m1/subscribe-timestamps.md, which moq-dev/moq#7085 implemented and doc/concept/standard.md (Timing) documents: an INCLUDE_PROPERTIES=0 request gets no TIMESCALE and unstamped objects. The maintainer reaffirmed it on 2026-11-01. With the JS half gone, both publishers follow that rule.
Online reviewers (none unresolved):
Codex P2 and CodeRabbit said only the joined group should wait. Fixed, apart from the declined fallback above, and CodeRabbit agreed.
Say why a relayed track ended. When the relay aborts a malformed track, it still ends the downstream subscription with PUBLISH_DONE INTERNAL_ERROR. That is why bindings showed Internal and not a malformed-track error. Check whether draft-22's PUBLISH_DONE registry has a code that fits.
Capture page consoles in the baseline harness. The run directory keeps no publisher or consumer page logs, so the binding's error reason is lost. Keeping them would have made this much quicker to diagnose.
The release backport and the cancel-wait test already have quests (linked above).
A Rust relay fills a cache miss with a draft-22 FETCH that sends
INCLUDE_PROPERTIES=0, since it already learned the track from SUBSCRIBE_OK.
The JS publisher read that as opting the track out of timestamps and sent
untimed objects on a timed track, which the relay rejects as a malformed
track and aborts for every subscriber. That is the browser backend
baseline's IETF failure: downstream it surfaces as PUBLISH_DONE
INTERNAL_ERROR, and through moq-ffi as MoqError.Internal.
INCLUDE_PROPERTIES=0 only empties the answer's Track Properties. A timed
track stamps every object, as the Rust publisher already does and
draft-lcurley-moq-timestamp requires.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A relay joining a moq-transport-22 track mid-group subscribes with a
fill for the head of that group. A downstream join that misses the same
head also queued a cache-miss FETCH for it. When the FETCH's objects
landed first, they cached the group as a fetched one, and the live tail
stream that ends the group was refused as a duplicate. Live readers
then waited on that group until they timed out, which the browser
backend baseline hit intermittently on its IETF relay.
The miss now waits until the subscription's fill has headed its group
or settled without it. The cache then answers it, and a fill that
failed still leaves the miss to a FETCH.

The JS timestamp fix addresses the source of the interop failure. The Rust coordination is too broad and loses cancellation while waiting. I verified the two existing findings against poll_headed, serve_fill, the range-fetch cancellation checks, and Join::drop; referencing them rather than duplicating inline comments:
P1: canceled fills retain queued work at rs/moq-net/src/ietf/subscriber.rs:3695-3697. The new wait cannot observe abandoned requests, so repeated request/cancel cycles accumulate tasks while the upstream head is stalled. Keep cancellation observable throughout the wait. Existing finding.
P2: unrelated history waits on the join head at rs/moq-net/src/ietf/subscriber.rs:3694-3696. A fill reset before its header can remain outstanding indefinitely, blocking historical misses unrelated to the overlapping group. Coordinate only overlapping work rather than serializing all cache misses. Existing finding.
No additional actionable findings. Static GitHub review only; I did not execute tests or reproduce the browser baseline.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
Timed objects retain timestamps when properties are not requested, while FETCH_OK properties remain empty in that case. Subscription cache-miss group FETCH work waits for a relevant subscription fill to become headed or settled. The Nightly browser backend baseline requirement and its related document are removed.

Explanation
The title names the change as finishing the browser backend baseline on moq-transport-22 under a fix(net) prefix. The changeset does contain the browser-baseline fixes: the JS publisher now stamps timed-track objects when INCLUDE_PROPERTIES=0, and the Rust subscriber waits for a joined group head instead of issuing a duplicate FETCH. It also deletes the baseline doc. The title is broad and does not name either specific fix, but it is related to the main change.

Explanation
The description is detailed and directly related to the changeset. It explains the two bugs (timed objects missing timestamps from the JS publisher, and the relay FETCHing a group head its own subscription was already bringing) and the fix in rs/moq-net/src/ietf/subscriber.rs and rs/moq-net/src/model/track/fill.rs, along with tests, impact, and merge history. The description also says the JS publisher half was dropped and publisher.ts and its tests were restored to main. The raw summary still lists JS publisher and test edits, so the description and the summary do not agree on scope. That mismatch is outside the scope of this lenient check, which only asks whether the description relates to the changeset.

A cache miss waited for the subscription's fill before any FETCH, so a
head that never arrived held back unrelated history, and a cancelled
request kept its task until the head settled. Split the joined group off
into its own run, wait only that run, and stop waiting once no reader
wants it or the track aborts.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Both findings referenced in my previous review are addressed:
P1 canceled fills retaining work: the wait now observes aborts and per-run demand, including the last reader leaving, so abandoned work can exit without the head arriving.
No new actionable bugs found. Direction: moving coordination inside serve_fill is appropriately narrower than the original global wait. The joined group itself can still wait while its promised head remains outstanding; this is the documented existing contract, not a new finding here.
Verification: base-aware comparison against the prior reviewed head, excluding merged main changes, and static inspection of cancellation, run splitting, lock/wakeup ordering, and tests with an independent cross-check. I did not run tests or the browser baseline; there is no dedicated cancellation-wait regression in this update.
Merging at d5346312fcebbae21cf2699ba1d65fa52bd6d9ee.
Changes
JS publisher: a timed track now stamps every object with its Timestamp, even when the subscriber sent INCLUDE_PROPERTIES=0. This covers SUBSCRIBE, fills, and FETCH, and fixes the MoqError.Internal / malformed-track abort in the nightly IETF cell.
Rust relay: when a cache miss is for the group the subscription joined, it waits for the subscription's own head instead of FETCHing it. This fixes the intermittent duplicate-group hang. Only that group waits, and older history still FETCHes right away.
Deletes quest/m0/nightly/browser-baseline.md and its link from the nightly epic.
Decisions
No version bump and no backport for @moq/net, per the maintainer. The fix reaches npm with the next cut.
Declined CodeRabbit's fallback FETCH for a head that never arrives. CodeRabbit withdrew the request.

main's Fill::Failed (#7322) means the head is never coming, so
the fill wait stops holding that group back and the cache miss FETCHes it.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Not re-landing. The 06:07Z batch failure was this PR's: moq-net failed to compile against moq-dev/moq#7322's new Fill::Failed. That is fixed in d94527ec38, along with a fresh main merge, and just ci passes locally.
Merging main turned up a conflict that needs a maintainer decision. moq-dev/moq#7085 landed the 2026-10-27 rule: an INCLUDE_PROPERTIES=0 request gets unstamped objects from both publishers. This PR's JS change does the opposite. The relay now asks for properties on timed tracks, so bug 1 is fixed without the JS change. I recommend dropping the JS half and keeping the relay fill-wait fix. The options are under ## Decisions needed in the body. I've released the merge hold.

Direction: keep the relay coordination fix and drop the now-redundant JS timestamp change. I independently confirmed the already-recorded integration concern, rather than adding duplicate inline comments. At js/net/src/ietf/publisher.ts:696-697,2475-2478, an INCLUDE_PROPERTIES=0 request still receives stamped objects without TIMESCALE. Since #7085, main's documented contract and Rust publisher deliberately send unstamped objects for that request. The relay now requests properties for timed resumes and cache-miss FETCHes (rs/moq-net/src/ietf/subscriber.rs:3179-3182,5577), so retaining main's JS guards/tests removes this wire-policy divergence without restoring the original relay failure. This is a new base-integration concern, not a newly discovered defect in the unchanged JS patch; I have not established a receiver crash.
The new Fill::Failed handling at subscriber.rs:6176 correctly ends the pending-head wait: that state is terminal, and a late installed head is canceled. The prior cancellation-retention and unrelated-history blocking findings remain fixed. No additional actionable bugs found.
Verification: GitHub-only, base-aware static delta/context review with an independent cross-check. I did not run tests or the browser baseline or verify the reported CI results.
Resolves the serve_fill conflicts with main's `Later<Option<Timescale>>`
timescale: each call keeps this branch's `heading` argument, and main's new
TRACK_STATUS fill passes `None`, since it has no subscription head. The
branch's new tests move from `moq_clock::test` to `kio::test`, as main did.
Restores js/net/src/ietf/publisher.ts, publisher.test.ts and fetch.test.ts to
main, per the maintainer's 2026-11-01 decision: main fixed bug 1 from the
relay side (#6999, #7085), and #7085's rule stands that an
INCLUDE_PROPERTIES=0 request gets unstamped objects.

Design change: this PR drops its JS publisher half and keeps only the relay fill-wait fix. The maintainer decided this on 2026-11-01.
js/net/src/ietf/publisher.ts, publisher.test.ts and fetch.test.ts are back to main (d013b57502).
Bug 1 is already fixed on main from the relay side. The range FETCH from moq-dev/moq#6999 and the resumed SUBSCRIBE from moq-dev/moq#7085 both ask for properties on a timed track.

The previously noted JS wire-policy divergence is fixed: the publisher and both affected test files now exactly match the current base, preserving #7085's INCLUDE_PROPERTIES=0 behavior. Keeping only the relay coordination is the simpler direction. The prior cancellation and unrelated-history fixes remain intact; the new status-only fill call correctly has no subscription head to await. No new actionable bugs found.
Verification: GitHub-only static delta and surrounding-code inspection. Tests, interop, and the browser baseline were not run or independently verified.

Finishes quest/m0/nightly/browser-baseline.md by fixing the relay half of the nightly IETF-cell failures. It also unblocks quest/m0/backport-fill-head-race.md and quest/m2/fill-wait-cancel-test.md.
Summary
Nightly hit two bugs in the IETF cell, both between a JS publisher and the Rust relay.
1. Timed objects arrived without timestamps (the
MoqError.Internalfailure in run 40698329026). Already fixed onmain, so this PR no longer changes it. When the relay filled a cache miss, its FETCH sentINCLUDE_PROPERTIES=0. The JS publisher then sent objects without Timestamps, and the relay treated them as a malformed track and aborted it. Onmain, the relay's range FETCH (moq-dev/moq#6999) and its resumed SUBSCRIBE (moq-dev/moq#7085) both ask for properties on a timed track, so the objects come stamped.2. It then refused the live tail stream that ends the group as
duplicate, and live readers waited on the group until the sample timed out. Locally this happened about once every one to three focused runs (216 samples each).Fix (
rs/moq-net/src/ietf/subscriber.rs,rs/moq-net/src/model/track/fill.rs):serve_fillsplits it off into its own run, as it already does for the live group.Fill::next_run_exceptserves every other owed run first, so older history is FETCHed right away.Choices made without asking
Filldocs already accept that cost, and a FETCH there would bring back the duplicate race. A reader that gives up on the group releases the wait.mainrequests during TRACK_STATUS (moq-dev/moq#7328) does no head wait. That path has no subscription, so no head is on its way.[S]and stays an epic. This PR removes its last child. Its README still holds its own work (multi-step jobs continue past a failed step, and a scheduled run is confirmed to pass), soquest checkneeds a size there. I didn't flatten it into a single file.Impact
INCLUDE_PROPERTIES=0rule still holds on both.Decisions
@moq/netfix ships. Decided 2026-10-28 (maintainer): ✅ no bump and no backport. This is now moot, since the PR no longer changes JS.main. moq-dev/moq#7085 implemented the maintainer's 2026-10-27 decision: anINCLUDE_PROPERTIES=0SUBSCRIBE or FETCH gets no TIMESCALE and unstamped objects. This PR's old fix 1 made the JS publisher stamp anyway. Decided 2026-11-01 (maintainer):js/net/src/ietf/publisher.tsand its tests tomain, and keep only the relay fill-wait fix. Bug 1 is already fixed onmainfrom the relay side by fix(net): answer IETF FETCH as the JS publisher does #6999 and fix(net): honor the Track Properties opt-out on IETF SUBSCRIBE #7085.Recorded in the design change comment. The quest file this PR deletes has no Plan left to record it in.
