quest: plan follow-ups from the 2026-10-31 /quest-complete merges - #7440
Plans the follow-ups handed back by the 2026-10-31 /quest-complete run. The source list had ~178 items.
Summary
64 new quests: m0 10, m1 18, m2 33, m3 3 (66 planned; two dropped on 2026-11-02 as covered on main, below). Each is linked from its milestone or epic README.
20 existing quests extended with the parts they already own: backport-release-hardening, migrate-audit, audit-interop, upstream-reports, wasm-bindings, drop-set, one-port/rtc-feed, one-port/srt-demux, mux-vr-ambisonic-fmp4, uniffi-fork, ietf-cluster-peers, audit-lints, quic-dev-dep-path, rtc-pacing, webrtc/dtls-after-ice, e2ee/README, spawn-audit, perf/stream/driver, qmux-receive-lease and ietf-fill-refill.
Planned elsewhere: the quest-tool follow-ups (land fixer triage, fixer crash, head_moved, queue checks, mergeability, status, merge driver, gate priority) are in a separate PR, moq-dev/quest#318.
Not planned, because something already covers them:
backport-release-hardening grew from [S] to [M]. It now also covers moq-dev/moq#7210 and moq-dev/moq#7414, and requires their quests.
No quest for a YAML duplicate-key check (moq-dev/moq#7202). actionlint already fails on duplicate keys in workflows and actions; this was tested.
New quests built on open PRs link differently. Where the PR's quest is a real blocker, they list it under Required, and quest rm drops the link when that PR finishes. Otherwise they say "start after #N lands".
Decisions
Goal: new quests + edits to owning quests, quest-tool bugs into moq-dev/quest's tree, no quests for merge-order notes/user actions; stale worktree cleanup now. ✅ Also cleanup now
Optional items: ✅ go through them one at a time (user)
Land blame: user: the fixer should run on each failing batch before ejecting, instead of spending CI on bisection.
Land fixer (moq-dev/quest host-land): ✅ as restated. The fixer reads a failing batch, finds the PR that caused it (or a red base, which halts), and ejects only that PR. If it can't tell, it ejects the whole batch as today. No bisection. The fixer crash on ejection is fixed first.
Quest-tool follow-ups: ✅ separate quest-plan PR in moq-dev/quest
14 compressed-stream: ✅ m1. User: "we still need compressed size on the wire, so we don't need to uncompress to learn it." -> keep the declared compressed size; drop only the 32 MiB guard; stream decompression bounded against zip bombs
Merged origin/main (conflict-free). Since this branch was cut, merged PRs finished six quests it linked, so their links were removed: cli-modes (moq-dev/moq#7261), mesh/sign (moq-dev/moq#7092), ordered-owed-wait (moq-dev/moq#7403), obs-multitrack (moq-dev/moq#7333), mpeg2-open-gop-export (moq-dev/moq#7365) and workflow-security (moq-dev/moq#7317). The Required entries on them are gone, which unblocks ordered-owed-holes, obs-multitrack-check, pes-hold-open-gop and workflow-audit-followups. mesh-key-codec still requires mesh/enroll. Prose mentions now link the PR or name the finished quest.
Duplicates: main added no new quests since the branch point (38566f5a84). Its edits to existing quests (five-minutes, log-secrets, perf/stream, fanout-lock, ...) don't overlap the new quests, so nothing was folded.
Pullfrog: completed the README index bullets this PR added that stopped mid-clause.
CodeRabbit: all 16 plan findings accepted and folded into their quests. Each thread has a reply.
Merge with main (2026-11-01)
The land queue ejected this PR for a merge conflict. I merged origin/main locally; the head is now 05c3349c58.
Conflicts:
quest/m1/drop-set.md: kept this PR's "Untimed fills below a resolved start" note and main's new Required entry, fill-linear.
quest/m1/eager-encode/README.md: moq-dev/moq#7238 finished raw-audio, so the epic now requires only audio-across-stop, and audio-across-stop no longer requires raw-audio.
Finished blockers removed. Main finished 30 quest files that this PR's new quests required or linked: the 28 below, where pipeline-requests counts its README and two children. 17 were already gone at the previous head 38411248e0, but its mechanical merge left their links behind. The other 13 were deleted by the 59 commits merged now. All of their Required and Related entries are gone, which unblocks those quests. The prose now links the merged PR or names the finished quest:
No new quest was dropped. For each new quest whose source or blocker PR has merged since, I checked that PR's merged code or body to see whether the follow-up was already done. None was:
cmsg::LEN still sizes Apple's IPv4 arm for in_addr, although moq-dev/moq#7418 landed in_pktinfo sends.
spawn_tcp_loop still builds tls:// sessions without the ALPN.
readFetched still collects each group slice.
Rewritten to what remains:
tls-link-alpn: moq-dev/moq#7362 already sets the ALPN on the relay's shared TCP port. Only the tls:// listener's own loop is left, and it should share the read.
cmsg-len-send: both PRs have landed, so it now says to move Apple to the in_pktinfo arm here, rather than "whichever lands second".
Review threads. All 8 open threads are answered and resolved; 7 are fixed and 1 is partly declined:
CodeRabbit, m0 index bullet for backport-release-hardening: fixed.
CodeRabbit, code-scanning dismissal field names: fixed.
CodeRabbit, load-timing-bounds summary is not only about wall-clock bounds: fixed.
CodeRabbit, connection-panic-isolation's fail-fast option contradicts its Goal: fixed. The option is now "Not chosen", with that reason.
CodeRabbit, read_buffer_size is an allocation, not a cap: fixed.
CodeRabbit, lite05-subscribe-end should name one outcome: fixed. It is now a clean end in both languages. This follows the plan's own rule: match what a current lite-05 publisher's SUBSCRIBE_END produces.
CodeRabbit, mkv-input-coalesce partial readability: partly declined. The Goal now states the real bound: readers lag by at most the buffer. I refuted the per-call flush, because it would bring back the cost the quest removes.
Pullfrog, dangling links: fixed by this merge.

Merge with main (2026-11-02)
The PR had conflicted with main since 2026-11-01. I disabled its stale auto-merge and merged origin/main three times, up to e25f6266df, about 180 commits. Main finished 149 quests and added 90 in that span. Every new quest and every part this PR adds to an existing quest was re-checked against today's tree: whether its work landed, whether a quest on main plans it, its links, and its path:line references (now pinned to be39188000 where they moved).
Conflicts:
quest/m0/interop-green/README.md: main finished stale-browser-tests (moq-dev/moq#7060) and sized the README [XS] as if no child remained. js-pause-resume is still a child, so the README is an epic again, with no size.
quest/m1/drop-set.md: kept this PR's note on untimed fills. Dropped the Required entry on fill-linear, which moq-dev/moq#7542 finished.
quest/m2/audit-lints.md: kept both bullets, this PR's fetch_update and main's set_var.
quest/m2/ietf-fill-refill.md: main's link for join after finish (moq-dev/moq#7306), plus this PR's refreshed Fill line references, re-pinned.
Three quests this PR extended were finished on main. Their additions moved to the quests that still own the work:
moq-dev/moq#7296 added the closing-side wait on lite-05/06. Its recorded decisions keep lite-01..04 on the ACK drain and accept mock-only reproduction, with no real-WebTransport harness.
moq-dev/moq#7553 forces mid-drain accept yields in the drain tests.
center-play-audio (m2): main's audio-only-play (2026-11-01) plans the same fix. This quest's real-browser AudioDecoder.isConfigSupported test was folded in, and audio-only-play grew from [XS] to [S].
tls-reload-supervision (main's quest, from the local review): it planned the reload watcher and qmux supervision that connection-panic-isolation also plans. Its qmux hook was superseded once feat(qmux)!: a session is one caller-spawned driver that owns its socket #7494 left qmux spawning nothing. connection-panic-isolation absorbs both spawns and records the 2026-10-30 plan.
Trimmed to what remains:
check-selection, now "[XS] A jq error in the Rust selection fails the run". This fixes the OpenAI review's P2 on 05c3349c58. moq-dev/moq#7473 moved send-depth to Nightly, and moq-dev/moq#7475 removed test/wasm/uniffi/. The command-substitution -e loss in sh/rs/select.sh:112 remains.
hakari-followups: cargo-hakari is in the dev shell. hakari.md is now Related, not Required.
shared-target: moq-dev/moq#7594 fixed the Argument list too long part.
js-pause-resume ([M] to [S], "stays fixed"): the cell passed on drafts 18, 20 and 22 in scheduled Interop 41317901057. What remains is to confirm it on another run, bisect to name the fix, and add the regression test.
raw-consume-warmup ([S] to [XS]): the pre-encoded rung disable is planned in main's api-gaps.
test-inventory-followups: JS bench coverage stays with main's js-bench-inventory, from the local review.
Corrected against today's code:
server-machines: the second method is Handshake::ok.
ordered-owed-holes: JS now has the same problem since moq-dev/moq#7609.
connection-panic-isolation: qmux's tasks are now one caller-spawned driver.
sim-credit-open: it now covers transport::memory's existing credit.
load-timing-bounds: epochs is now instances.
ffi-exporter (main renamed uniffi-fork): the cancelled-Go-result fix targets the exporter's generator.
str0m/dimpl is "not to be filed", which matches the WebRTC epic.
mux-vr-ambisonic-fmp4: the exporter already writes family-2 dOps, so it needs a round-trip test.
backport-release-hardening: moq-dev/moq#7599 landed its original two items.
obs-multitrack-check and transcode-parallel-open follow the merged moq-dev/moq#7029 and moq-dev/moq#7375. transcode-parallel-open is now unblocked.
archive-lookup-withdrawal (main's quest) now links archive-time-followups directly, instead of this PR.
All other new quests are unchanged in scope. Each still has its problem in today's code, cited in its file.
Seen while checking, not changed here:
Nightly's Miri job fails at setup: cargo-miri finds no rust-src, as in 41483654426. miri-nightly-budget records the fix: components: miri, rust-src in nightly.yml.
moq-dev/moq#7596 (open) rewrites backport-release-hardening and will conflict with this PR's additions.
quest/m2/performance-survey/mkv-fragments.md still describes the removed WebmIterator.

Round 1 (head 7e1cdc9662) reported 2 findings, both fixed:
medium: connection-panic-isolation duplicated main's tls-reload-supervision, whose qmux-hook plan is now stale. Folded into connection-panic-isolation, and the old quest was removed.
low: test-inventory-followups duplicated main's js-bench-inventory on JS bench coverage. That part was dropped in favor of js-bench-inventory.
66 new quests (m0 11 -> 10, m1 19, m2 33, m3 3) and edits to 20 existing
quests, from the follow-ups the 2026-10-31 /quest-complete run handed
back. Decisions and their prompts are in the PR body.

No actionable bugs found in this documentation-only planning change. Overall direction is sound: follow-ups stay narrowly scoped, extend existing owners where appropriate, and spell out prerequisites, regression tests, and API impacts rather than bundling implementation changes into the plan.
Verification: reviewed the changed plans, with an independent m2/m3 pass, and sampled relevant current implementation (demand cancellation, catalog-gated demand, splitter resets, compressed-frame limits, and transcode probing). No tests were run; historical PR claims and every proposed implementation were not independently reproduced.

I verified every /quest/...md link in the diff resolves, title-checked all 97 cited moq-dev/moq#NNNN references against gh (all match their quest's claim, including #7027 for the CodeQL false-positive judgement), and spot-checked the code-path references (center-play.ts:16, producer.rs:1073, publisher.tsreadFetched, terminal.ts:76, subscriber.rsFill/claim_fill). None are wrong. The only finding is cosmetic and noted inline.
No actionable comments were generated in the recent review.
Walkthrough
The pull request updates milestone quest indexes and adds or revises planning documents and recorded findings across m0, m1, m2, and m3. The documents cover release backports, CI and test work, transport and media follow-ups, audits, and tooling. They describe planned work or observed status; they do not implement the described features.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 0b186
The backlog updates are mergeable with a bounded documentation follow-up: clarify compressed-input storage before implementing removal of the frame-size guard. The other previously reported planning inconsistencies and deleted-document references are addressed.

Expose or specify the frame arrived parity contract.
The parity table names frame arrived time as missing, while moq_net::Frame already records when its last byte enters the cache through Frame::arrived(). MoqFrame exposes only payload and presentation timestamp_us, so the binding drops this value at the boundary. Define how JavaScript observes the same instant and units before closing this row. Clock agreement alone does not define the observable value.

Specify per-track fan-out for SUBSCRIBE_TRACKS.
“Resolves per namespace” can be implemented as one source per namespace. That loses tracks when one namespace spans multiple relays. State that the request reaches every source under the prefix, deduplicates by namespace and track name, keeps non-selected sources paused, and uses FORWARD=0 on cluster-peer requests. Otherwise peers can send every track's objects unnecessarily. The referenced PR’s final direction specifies these rules. (github.com)

codex / Codex land fixer: quest check fails on seven deleted quest targets introduced by #7440: relay-http, cli-modes, mesh/sign, ordered-owed-wait, obs-multitrack, mpeg2-open-gop-export, and workflow-security; six are Require. Recommendation: Review completed prerequisites against base and #7210, reconcile the Required sections and historical references without restoring completed quests, then run quest check and resubmit.

Reviewed commit: fab75e461b9e62e6af23fb142649a32f89792cf2, compared with my previous review at 1c88b99edc78a8bbf9c377fa6763186fff14f40c, accounting for merged base changes.
No new actionable bugs found. The substantive plan refinements improve the direction: explicit dispatch gates, codec-specific reset handling, and newest-only transcode resolution with regression coverage. The plans address the independent dispatch-gate and stale-resolution findings; these are planned fixes, not implemented behavior. My prior review had no findings to carry forward.
Verification: static review of changed plans, independent m2/m3 pass, and sampled surrounding code. No tests run; proposed implementations and historical reproductions were not exhaustively verified.

Reviewed changes
Merged origin/main and removed the stale ## Required entries for six quests whose PRs landed since the branch point (mesh/sign#7092, ordered-owed-wait#7403, obs-multitrack#7333, mpeg2-open-gop-export#7365, workflow-security#7317, cli-modes#7261), confirming all six are merged and no dangling prose references remain.
Repointed prose links to the finished-quest PRs (e.g. audio-across-stop now names #7261, obs-multitrack-check and pes-hold-open-gop name their PRs instead of the removed quests).
Completed the milestone/epic README index bullets that previously stopped mid-clause, so every bullet this PR adds is a self-contained description.
Folded the CodeRabbit plan findings into their quests (audit-interop, audit-lints, mux-discontinuity-headers, relay-inflight-replay, release-py-dispatch, pcr-stall, backport-mkv-buffer, shared-target, ffi-future-size, hls-stalled-segment, pes-hold-open-gop, probe/viewer-followups, watch-test-waits, workflow-audit-followups, transcode-parallel-open).
I re-verified the load-bearing claims the delta introduces against the tree: av1::Split keeps no parameter-set cache (rs/moq-mux/src/codec/av1/split.rs:7-8), health.tick runs only on the PCR-bearing packet path (rs/moq-mux/src/container/ts/import.rs:554) while Health::pcr checks only on a PCR (health.rs:232), and release-py.yml's ffi-gate/ffi-pypi are gated to push (:98-112) so build.outputs.publish (:52) never passes on a workflow_dispatch. All accurate. The remaining README truncation artifact is a known generator behavior, not worth filing.

the Goal that client callers receive the terminal error.

- Around line 21-24: Update the fixed-buffer payload write policy so a short
payload becomes readable before it ends, rather than waiting for the buffer to
fill or the payload to complete; flush at an input boundary that preserves
partial readability. Add a test that feeds a short payload one byte at a time
and verifies readers can observe bytes before payload completion, while
retaining the bounded-buffer behavior.

Important
The base merge reconciled the README indexes and ietf-fill-refill.md for the quests main finished, but left 19 /quest/...md links in this PR's own quest files pointing at paths the same merge deleted. quest check runs in the landing gate and rejects dangling links, so this fails the merge until the links are pruned.
Reviewed changes
Merged origin/main (08e71cd3df) and retained main's deletion of the obsolete quest/m2/rs2ts/wasm-bindings.md (WASM removed in #7475).
Repointed quest/m2/ietf-fill-refill.md's headless-groups link from the deleted ietf-headless-group.md to PR #7322.
I re-derived every /quest/...md link in the tree: fab75e4 and main (08e71cd3df) are both clean, but this merge leaves 19 broken, all in files this PR owns. The reconciliation stopped short of the hand-written references.
codex / Codex land fixer: This maintainer pick already used its mechanical fi·x attempt. Run /quest-iterate to diagnose the repeated failure, then pick it again.
Merge-order note: moq-dev/moq#7541 finishes and deletes /quest/m2/js-bench-inventory.md. This PR's new quest/m2/test-inventory-followups.md links to that quest twice: in the Plan's last bullet ("JS bench scripts are left to …") and in ## Related. Whichever of the two PRs lands second drops both. The bullet becomes obsolete once #7541 lands, and ## Related goes with its only entry. quest check fails on the merge result until that happens.

Specify streamed storage for compressed slices before removing the 32 MB guard.
The plan keeps each compressed slice whole until it completes. Peak receiver memory then grows with the declared slice size, not with the 32 MB tail. Specify bounded streaming storage, or a receive limit, and change the "memory held near the tail" test expectation to match.

Update the compressed-slice receive plan to specify bounded streaming storage or
an explicit receive limit before removing the 32 MB guard; do not leave
compressed slices buffered whole without a bound. Change the “memory held near
the tail” test expectation to reflect the selected storage or limit behavior.

quest land watch: the merge queue removed this pull request at ba7a364 because it conflicts with main (merge_conflict).
The land fixer works on it in the background, and the watcher re-enqueues it at the back of the queue once it is fixed or judged flaky, or hands it back here with what it needs.
quest land watch: armed auto-merge on this pull request at bb1adf1, so it joins the back of the merge queue once its required checks pass, with main at 25ff6e9 merged in by the quest merge driver.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Important
The base merge leaves one /quest/...md link dangling. quest check runs in the landing gate and rejects dangling links, so this fails the merge until the reference is pruned.
Reviewed changes
Merged origin/main (25ff6e975) through the quest merge driver, bringing nine main commits that deleted quests this PR referenced: quic-zero-rtt-leftovers (#7492), ffi-poll-migrate (#7497), export-idle-poll and single-delivery-write (#7504, #7508), spike-cluster (#7534, folded into the perf epic), and mkv-fragments (#7515).
Reconciled the affected milestone/epic indexes and ## Required/## Related entries in the PR-owned quests, and added the poll-first entry to quest/m1/README.md while dropping the completed quic-zero-rtt-leftovers bullet.
Main's JS subscription-ranges rework (#6949) and the cluster-spike results now in quest/m2/perf/kio-channel-contention/README.md arrive through the merge.
The reconciliation covered the README/Required references but missed one hand-written link, noted inline.

Important
The quest land merge of main (686644de9) finished two quests this PR linked, and the reconciliation left two hand-written /quest/...md links pointing at the deleted files. quest check rejects dangling links in the landing gate, so these block the merge until pruned.
Reviewed changes — the quest land merge of main up to 686644de9, and the quest-merge-driver reconciliation it drove.
Merged origin/main (686644de9) through the quest merge driver, bringing six main commits: the no-em-dash gate (#7501), IETF/JS range updates (#7551), shared request-token grants (#7211), the datagram-tracks plan (#7575), JS bench inventory (#7541), and UDP queue-loss attribution (#7529).
Reconciled the milestone/epic indexes and ## Required/## Related entries the completed quests invalidated: dropped the ietf-token-auth and em-dash-gate bullets from m1/README, js-bench-inventory from m2/README, and draft22-interop from m0/test-flakes-2/README; removed the ietf-token-auth## Related/## Required entries in auth-expiry-reset and auth-token-fetch; added main's new quest bullets (datagram-tracks, js-boundary-sync, hls-trailing-gap, quic-readable-dedupe).
Repointed auth-token-fetch's incoming-half note to #7211 and threaded datagram-tracks through lite07-finalize, subscription-delay, and lite-tail-drop-count.
The reconciliation covered the READMEs and the structured sections but missed two prose links, noted inline. The prior review's dangling link at quest/m2/quic-sim-mtu.md:32 is unchanged and still open.

The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
This merge landed #7211, which deleted quest/m1/ietf-token-auth.md, so [request tokens](/quest/m1/ietf-token-auth.md) now dangles and quest check rejects it. The same line also still calls #7211(open) though it merged; repoint the link and update the status.

Three links introduced by this PR pointed to quest files removed by merged base changes. Repointed them to the completing PRs: #7492, #7541, and #7211, preserving the surrounding text and scope. Merged base without conflicts. Quest validation passed for all 604 documents, and every selected CI module passed across the initial run and the gh retry with locally installed PyYAML. No runtime code changed.

Merge with main (2026-10-31)
origin/main(conflict-free). Since this branch was cut, merged PRs finished six quests it linked, so their links were removed: cli-modes (moq-dev/moq#7261), mesh/sign (moq-dev/moq#7092), ordered-owed-wait (moq-dev/moq#7403), obs-multitrack (moq-dev/moq#7333), mpeg2-open-gop-export (moq-dev/moq#7365) and workflow-security (moq-dev/moq#7317). The Required entries on them are gone, which unblocks ordered-owed-holes, obs-multitrack-check, pes-hold-open-gop and workflow-audit-followups. mesh-key-codec still requires mesh/enroll. Prose mentions now link the PR or name the finished quest.38566f5a84). Its edits to existing quests (five-minutes, log-secrets, perf/stream, fanout-lock, ...) don't overlap the new quests, so nothing was folded.Merge with main (2026-11-01)
The land queue ejected this PR for a merge conflict. I merged
origin/mainlocally; the head is now05c3349c58.quest/m1/drop-set.md: kept this PR's "Untimed fills below a resolved start" note and main's newRequiredentry, fill-linear.quest/m1/eager-encode/README.md: moq-dev/moq#7238 finished raw-audio, so the epic now requires only audio-across-stop, and audio-across-stop no longer requires raw-audio.38411248e0, but its mechanical merge left their links behind. The other 13 were deleted by the 59 commits merged now. All of theirRequiredandRelatedentries are gone, which unblocks those quests. The prose now links the merged PR or names the finished quest:cmsg::LENstill sizes Apple's IPv4 arm forin_addr, although moq-dev/moq#7418 landedin_pktinfosends.spawn_tcp_loopstill buildstls://sessions without the ALPN.readFetchedstill collects each group slice.tls://listener's own loop is left, and it should share the read.in_pktinfoarm here, rather than "whichever lands second".path:linereferences.read_buffer_sizeis an allocation, not a cap: fixed.quest check --base origin/main: 677 documents ok.Merge with main (2026-11-02)
The PR had conflicted with
mainsince 2026-11-01. I disabled its stale auto-merge and mergedorigin/mainthree times, up toe25f6266df, about 180 commits. Main finished 149 quests and added 90 in that span. Every new quest and every part this PR adds to an existing quest was re-checked against today's tree: whether its work landed, whether a quest on main plans it, its links, and itspath:linereferences (now pinned tobe39188000where they moved).Conflicts:
quest/m0/interop-green/README.md: main finished stale-browser-tests (moq-dev/moq#7060) and sized the README[XS]as if no child remained. js-pause-resume is still a child, so the README is an epic again, with no size.quest/m1/drop-set.md: kept this PR's note on untimed fills. Dropped the Required entry on fill-linear, which moq-dev/moq#7542 finished.quest/m2/audit-lints.md: kept both bullets, this PR'sfetch_updateand main'sset_var.quest/m2/ietf-fill-refill.md: main's link for join after finish (moq-dev/moq#7306), plus this PR's refreshedFillline references, re-pinned.quest/m1/audio-across-stop.md. Its code is unchanged by feat(studio)!: encode the program whatever the demand; on-demand is an opt-in across docs and quests #7554.read_buffer_sizestopgap moved to perf/stream/codec, ahead of its gate.poll_reset. The note to re-balance paused reservations if a window shrinks moved to receive-pool.Dropped as stale (with
quest rm):AudioDecoder.isConfigSupportedtest was folded in, and audio-only-play grew from [XS] to [S].Trimmed to what remains:
05c3349c58. moq-dev/moq#7473 moved send-depth to Nightly, and moq-dev/moq#7475 removedtest/wasm/uniffi/. The command-substitution-eloss insh/rs/select.sh:112remains.cargo-hakariis in the dev shell. hakari.md is now Related, not Required.Argument list too longpart.Corrected against today's code:
Handshake::ok.transport::memory's existing credit.epochsis nowinstances.dOps, so it needs a round-trip test. All other new quests are unchanged in scope. Each still has its problem in today's code, cited in its file.
