Problem

JS ordered subscriptions skip missing groups that their feed may still deliver, unlike Rust after moq-dev/moq#7403.

Approach

Use the existing arrival ledger to wait only for subscription-owed groups. Reuse the buffered-group drift verdict: finite budgets stop waiting at the first media-time or wall-clock deadline, while unlimited readers wait until the hole resolves. Local tracks keep skipping gaps. Wake parked reads on arrivals, datagrams, drops, feed changes, frames, ledger folds, and budget updates. Keep an older route copy's buffered candidate ahead of newer copies while it waits, and advance copy cursors past groups handed out elsewhere. Frame notifications are limited to sinks parked at an owed hole.

Port the Rust cases with JS manual time, update the affected session tests, and extend the existing drift benchmark over publishers, readers, and retained history. Remove the completed quest.

Impact

  • Public API: no signature changes. Ordered subscriptions now honor the settled owed-group rule. Zero still waits for nothing; null leaves only publisher retention as a limit. An unlimited moq-transport SUBSCRIBE can wait until track end because it signals no gaps. Migration guidance is under Unreleased.
  • Wire: none.

Overlap and choices

  • Inspected moq-dev/moq#6949: it changes range admission and retention in these same cursor paths, but adds no owed-hole wait. This PR retains the current single-range surface and does not port its range work.
  • Inspected moq-dev/moq#7486: it fixes clean-close completion, not owed holes. Its completion changes are not duplicated here.
  • Keep one private subscription marker, set by both wire subscribers, so local producers never owe groups.
  • The header-only IETF stream test uses arrival reads to test framing independently of the lower groups its positive budget now owes. Its expected sequences remain unchanged. The lite tail test now asserts that ordered reads park before their budget expires, then deliver the same content and end cleanly.

Alternatives

A fixed grace cap would violate the unlimited-budget decision. A separate timer or ledger would duplicate existing drift and arrival accounting. Range and close-completion rewrites belong to the overlapping PRs.

Validation

  • Before the fix, the manual-clock cases reproduced immediate gap skipping and premature delivery. Likewise, the new datagram case of the owed-wait wake test stayed parked before its fix, as did the new stale-skip case ("an ordered read skipping a stale group stops waiting on holes below it") before 2236e48c09.
  • Head 2236e48c09, after merging origin/main at 608e63421e: quest gate nix develop --command just check origin/main passed every lane except one @moq/net test. That test, "a version without a boundary syncs once the request is out" in js/net/src/lite/subscriber.test.ts, is an announce-sync test this PR does not touch. It passed 5 of 5 isolated reruns, and a full @moq/net rerun passed 2,713 tests with 0 failures, so it is a flake under parallel load.
  • Head dbb3f78bb5 only merges origin/main at 30d6f63571 without conflicts. That range changes no js/ file. quest check --base origin/main and git diff --check: passed.
  • Earlier, just ci origin/main hit mbx E2BIG in the tooling lane's two test_unexecuted_bench_is_not_compiled cases. That upstream limitation is unrelated to this port, and the full gate was not rerun.

Review

  • Claude Code, claude-opus-5-5, medium effort, via quest review --harness claude --base origin/main, session 551d00c8-bc84-44f6-911b-0b8e1566cf97.
    • Round 1, 4ce37a18e16e435e441df797bd5143a22a0f1c34: two findings, both fixed. A newer route could pass an older copy's blocked candidate. The resumed cursor now preserves that candidate and shares the logical ordered floor across copies, with four manual-clock cases. Per-frame timeline notifications also woke unrelated arrival readers. They now target sinks parked on owed holes, and the original arrival notification behavior is restored.
    • Round 2, 50aea47d898b50ca9bb0a84ba1f21ed8ae0fa0c0: no findings.
  • CodeRabbit on 50aea47d89: a datagram filling an owed hole did not wake a parked ordered read. Fixed: #groupChanged subscribes to datagrams while waitingOrdered is set, and the wake test gains a datagram case.

  • CodeRabbit on 79913c2f14: a stale skip left #waitOwed checking holes below the advanced cursor. Fixed in 2236e48c09. Wall-clock staleness is not monotone in sequence: a group arriving after its successor can go stale while a lower hole, succeeded by that late group, is still spared. start now advances with each stale skip, which also lets the same pass's done check see the advanced cursor. A new manual-clock regression case covers it.
  • Codex, gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort, via quest review --base origin/main, session 01a19d76-6d3a-7753-9b7d-4a7f3aafe607. This is a new session: AGENTS.md changed on main, so quest review did not resume 01a19ab1. The previous round's state was passed to it as responses.
    • Round 1, 2236e48c0932d85b3dd426baca4965265e0b2557, against origin/main at 30d6f6357153b22067306e0bb18cf6ed585290a3: no findings.
  • dbb3f78bb5: no new review needed. This head only merges origin/main at 30d6f63571 into the reviewed 2236e48c09 without conflicts. git diff origin/main...dbb3f78bb5 matches git diff 30d6f63571...2236e48c09, apart from the index hash and hunk line numbers of the quest/m1/README.md link-list context.

Follow-ups

The upstream mbx limitation remains outside this port; no bypass was added. No new follow-up quest is proposed.

Reviewed commit: 50aea47d898b50ca9bb0a84ba1f21ed8ae0fa0c0.

No actionable bugs found in the changed code and relevant surrounding subscription, ordered-read, and resume paths. Reusing the arrival ledger and existing media/wall-clock budget is a sound direction: it preserves local-track skipping without introducing a separate timeout policy. Keeping the lowest buffered copy ahead of newer copies and sharing the ordered floor addresses the route-switch ordering risk; limiting frame notifications to owed-hole waiters keeps the added machinery scoped.

Verification: static GitHub review only; I did not run tests or benchmarks. The new manual-clock and resume tests cover the key wait/release transitions, but I have not independently verified the reported test results or the disclosed gate failures. No earlier published review findings to carry forward.

Walkthrough

Ordered readers on subscribed tracks now wait for missing groups that the feed still owes, subject to media-time or wall-clock limits. Local tracks continue to skip missing groups. The change adds feed-state tracking, gap detection, wakeups, and sequence floors for resumed copies. Tests cover timing limits, gap resolution, drops, track closure, and reads across resumed copies. Migration guidance describes the maxDelay behavior.

Merge Risk: Low · up to 79913

Some ordered reads may pause unnecessarily after skipping a stale group. The delay is bounded by the configured budget; correcting the cursor floor is advisable before merging.

Reviewed changes

This ports Rust's owed-group rule (moq-dev/moq#7403) into js/net, reviewed at head 50aea47 across all four commits.

  • Wait on owed holes — Subscriber#waitOwed parks a sequence-order read when the feed may still deliver a missing group, reusing the existing drift budget (media time + wall clock). Local tracks and a zero budget skip; maxDelay: null waits until the hole resolves.
  • Owed-hole detection — Producer.#mayLand becomes #landable, returning the first landable { sequence, folds? }, plus a new owedGroup hook. Only wire-subscribed copies (hooks.receiveTrack) owe.
  • Wake coverage — parked reads wake on arrivals, drops, feed/start changes, budget updates, ledger folds, and frames/close; frame wakes are gated on waitingOrdered, so non-waiting readers pay nothing per frame.
  • Route-copy floor — resumed readers pass a shared logical ordered floor (#newest + 1) into peekGroup/tryNextGroup, and hold the lowest copy's buffered candidate while it waits on a hole.
  • Tests, bench, docs — Rust cases ported with the manual clock; affected session tests updated; drift benchmark extended with an owed-hole park probe; quest removed and a MIGRATE entry added.

I verified the flaky js/net/src/lite/connection.test.ts close cases the body reports also reproduce intermittently on unmodified main; they are pre-existing and not introduced here. Focused track/resume/tail suites (392 pass) and tsc --noEmit are clean at this head.

Reviewed commit: 574bd5a626b7ae46bd23f6507e1de42a4e3e0c03, against my prior review at 50aea47d898b50ca9bb0a84ba1f21ed8ae0fa0c0, separating the merged main changes from the new fix.

No new actionable bugs found. CodeRabbit's datagram wakeup finding is addressed: js/net/src/track.ts now watches datagrams while an ordered read is waiting on an owed hole. Publication accounts the sequence before notifying that signal, so the retry sees the resolved hole; the added manual-clock test exercises this without advancing time. This is the appropriately narrow fix, retaining the existing ledger/budget design. The merged clean-close handling remains compatible with the owed wait.

My prior review had no findings to carry forward. Verification was static GitHub inspection of the delta and relevant wake/close/resume paths; I did not run tests or independently verify the reported passing gates.

Reviewed changes

This re-reviews the delta since the prior pullfrog review at 50aea47, at head 574bd5a.

  • Woke owed ordered reads on a datagram — the direct branch of #groupChanged now subscribes to the datagram signal while a read waits on an owed hole, since a datagram draws from the group sequence namespace and can account for the hole. The raised track.test.ts case fills a parked hole with insertDatagram and verifies the read resolves without advancing the clock (passes locally).
  • Merged origin/main — 574bd5a merges d8288e6934; the range-diff shows no branch-side changes from the merge, so the resolution was clean.

I verified the resume branch needs no matching change: it delegates through #resume.changed → Reader.changed (js/net/src/resume.ts:1055), which already subscribes to datagrams.changed on each copy.

An ordered pass that skips a stale group moves its cursor past every hole
below it, but kept checking those holes for owed waits. Wall-clock staleness
is not monotone in sequence: a group arriving after its successor can go
stale while a lower hole, succeeded by that late group, is still spared, so
the next candidate parked on a hole it can no longer deliver.

Reviewed commit: dbb3f78bb58fd3897fd4e316573861645bb44474, compared with my last published review at 574bd5a626b7ae46bd23f6507e1de42a4e3e0c03, separating merged base changes from the branch delta.

No new actionable bugs found. CodeRabbit’s advanced-cursor finding is addressed: js/net/src/track.ts:2903–2935 now advances the effective start after each stale skip, so subsequent owed-hole checks and the same-pass end check cannot use the obsolete floor. Updating that shared local is a suitably narrow solution without adding another ledger or timer. The added manual-clock regression isolates the out-of-order arrival case with a wider subscriber keeping the gap owed.

My prior review had no open findings; the previously fixed datagram wakeup remains present. Verification: static GitHub inspection of the delta and surrounding cursor/wait/completion code only; I did not run tests or independently verify reported gates.

Reviewed changes

This re-reviews the delta since the prior pullfrog review at 574bd5a, at head dbb3f78.

  • Advanced the pass floor on a stale skip — #tryNextBuffered's start is now a let reset to #nextSequence after each stale skip, so the same pass's #waitOwed and the completion check cannot consult holes below the abandoned cursor (2236e48c0). This addresses the CodeRabbit stale-skip finding correctly: wall-clock staleness is not monotone in sequence, so a lower hole can outlive its successor that already went stale, and once the ordered cursor advances past the skipped group the hole is undeliverable by construction.
  • Added a manual-clock regression case — late out-of-order arrival followed by a stale skip: the read stops waiting on the hole below the skipped group and delivers the next group.
  • Merged origin/main at 30d6f63571 (7c3cb89b0, dbb3f78bb) with no branch-side JS changes; only the quest README link list moved.

Verified locally at head: bun test src/track.test.ts -> 224 pass / 0 fail (the new case also passes in isolation), and bunx tsc --noEmit is clean.

…nto main's cursors

Decided 2026-11-03 (maintainer): re-port in place. Main rewrote the JS
cursor paths this PR changed (#7486 clean-close completion, #7597
`Delay { min, max }`, #7609 owed-hole waits, #7542 Rust window walks),
so the ranges, window, and lite-07 serving go on top of main's versions.

- Bounded reads end, as Rust's do since #7545 and #7625, replacing the
2026-10-31 decision to park: a plain reader judges its window as Rust's
`Cursor::is_exhausted` does, and a reader following route copies judges
it on the serving copy as Rust's `Reader::exhausted` does. Wire
publishers and route copies park through `hooks.parked`.
- Main's `delay: { min, max }` replaces this PR's `maxDelay`, with
  `NO_MAX_DELAY`/`maxDelayOf` as the no-limit value.
- The arrival grace is no longer capped at CACHE_EXPIRY: main bounds it
by the publisher's max age instead, and an unlimited ordered reader
waits for its hole (#7609, #7169).
- Owed holes count only inside the reader's ranges.
- lite-07: a SUBSCRIBE goes out alongside its TRACK, as on main, unless a
time anchor needs the track's timescale, as the Rust `pipeline` does.
The covered FIN without SUBSCRIBE_END stays lite-07 only, now that
  `waitsForSubscriberFin` covers lite-05+.
- Rust: the waiting time start is ported onto main's window walks as a
placeholder span, as a lookup is.
