fix(test-gate): a TS/JS test in a subdirectory package gets a runnable run= hint (#335) - #442
Problem. A TS/JS test in a subdirectory package got a run= hint that could not run. The path was root-relative. From the root, the runner found no package config. From the package, the path was wrong. A bracketed path (app/[slug]/page.test.ts) had -- before it, and vitest reads -- as the end of its options, so the row ran the whole suite.
Change.
The hint starts with cd <package> &&. The path after it is package-relative.
A multi-root run has no root= and keeps the plain command.
vitest and jest get one quoted path, without --. jest escapes bracket and parenthesis bytes, because it reads its argument as a regular expression.
Two cases get run_unknown="1" because no safe command exists: a path that starts with -, and a bracketed path under node --test (the runner globs its file arguments and exits 1).
Limits (in the changelog fragment). jest escapes a path only when it has a byte a shell would quote. A plain dot stays a regex dot, so the filter can also match a sibling such as route/test.ts. The cd stays in a shell that is reused.
Checks. Adversarial review ran 3 rounds until no new bugs. Rebased on current main. On Linux (g++-14) these pass: testgatecheck (new fixture test/testgatenestedfix, case n5 and others), docscommandscheck, changelogfragcheck, manifestcheck, langidentitycheck (ratchet stays 335). I did not re-run the full suite after the rebase. changelog.d/335-ts-js-run-package-dir.md added.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
TypeScript and JavaScript test commands now run from nested package directories and use paths relative to those packages. Paths with special characters are handled according to the test runner; commands are omitted or marked unknown when paths cannot be safely determined.
Documentation
Updated command guidance to explain how test commands are derived from available runner and package evidence, including when no command can be determined.

Walkthrough
TS/JS test command generation now accounts for packages below the crawl root. It uses the package directory and a package-relative test path, with runner-specific quoting and filtering rules. The change also updates command documentation and adds regression checks.
PackageManifests now records the directory depth of the manifest that determines the runner.
Construct package-relative test commands src/jsrunner.h, src/testmap.h, test/testgatecheck.sh, docs/COMMANDS.md, src/cli.h, changelog.d/335-ts-js-run-package-dir.md
For a nested package under a single root, commands change into the package directory and use package-relative paths. The command builder quotes unsafe shell arguments, escapes Jest regex metacharacters, and omits commands for specified unsupported paths. Regression checks cover nested Vitest, Node, and Jest cases. Documentation and the changelog describe the command behavior.
A nested Jest hint may run an additional test file. The issue is narrow and can be fixed before merge or accepted with owner awareness.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title names the primary change: a TS/JS test in a subdirectory package now gets a runnable run= hint, which matches the raw summary and the objectives (cd into the package directory, package-relative path). It also cites the linked issue #335. The title is specific and single-sentence, and it uses the conventional fix(test-gate) scope. It does not mention the secondary changes (bracket quoting, regex escaping, run_unknown handling), which is acceptable for a title.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #335 requires runnable TS/JS hints for packages below the declared root and correct filtering for bracketed paths. The change adds cd <package> && with package-relative paths, preserves the existing command at root=, removes Vitest/Jest --, and applies Jest regex escaping. It marks unsafe Node and leading-dash cases as run_unknown="1". The reported regression checks cover nested packages and bracketed paths. The exit-code note in #335 is informational and does not add a coding requirement.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed documentation, help text, comments, changelog, runner metadata, command generation, and regression checks support the #335 behavior. The evidence shows no unrelated functional change. The excluded fixture files are test inputs and do not establish an out-of-scope change.

One more CodeRabbit point reached this PR by way of #460 (it showed these commits): it asked for rw::relForHash instead of rootRelativeUri in the TS/JS path. I did not change this. rootRelativeUri is the one relativizer that every p= uses, and the Python and Go paths beside it use it too. A root spelled with extra separators would break them all alike, so that is a separate change. Also fixed: the changelog now says a path that starts with - gets no run=, and gives the manual spelling ./-suite.test.mjs.
…rectories (redhat-et#335)
The hint now starts with cd into the package directory. Bracketed paths run
only their own file. Bracketed node --test paths and paths that start with -
get run_unknown, because no safe command exists.

@llvm-x86, thank you. This fixes a real problem, and you checked it against what the runners actually do.
We ran your commands, not only read them. We used vitest 5.0.2, jest 30.5.2 and Node 26.9, with a fresh shell at the root for each row:
The cd <package> && <runner> <package-relative path> shape worked on every row that printed a command. That covers nested packages, a nested package inside a package, a directory with a space or a ', and a directory that starts with - (your ./ prefix).
Your hint for -- was right. On the old command a bracketed vitest route printed Test Files 2 passed (2), the whole suite. Yours prints 1 passed (1). The old jest command exited 1 with No tests found. Yours runs the one file.
Your climb count picks the right directory. A package with only a marker manifest under a root that names the runner keeps the plain root command, and it passes.
The honest cases are honest. A bracketed path under node --test and a path that starts with - now say run_unknown="1", and a mocha package stays run_unknown.
On real repos, all 175 changed rows name the right package. We read nest's samples, cockroach's pkg/ui/workspaces and vscode's scripts/code-oss-launcher. The cd directory plus the path gives the row's p= on every row. Non-TS repos are byte-identical.
You were right about relForHash. A root spelled sub// already breaks every p=, with or without this PR, so it belongs in a separate change. We will track it.
What's left. All of it is small, and we can do it on our side, with credit, if you prefer:
The changelog's manual spelling doesn't run on Node 26.9.node --test ./-suite.test.mjs exits 1 with bad option: -suite.test.mjs, because the runner drops the ./ when it starts the child. node ./-suite.test.mjs does work. We'd change the sentence to that spelling, or drop the example.
The heading needs your name. We'd make it (#335, #442, thanks @llvm-x86).
Two --quality-delta acks. These are the resolveJsVerb out-parameter and the TestRunnerIndex class-size row. Neither is a bug. We record intended changes like these in .ripwire_quality_acks, and we'll add the lines.
One question, and your call: would you be open to (cd web && npx vitest run src/lib.test.ts), in a subshell? Your changelog already notes that the cd stays in a reused shell. Some agent shells keep their working directory between calls, and there the second row fails with cd: web: No such file or directory. We reproduced that. The subshell costs two bytes per row, and the shell stays at root=, which is where the legend says to run from. If you'd rather keep your form, we'll make the change in the follow-up.
Once CI is green we plan to merge this and land the follow-up right after it. Thank you for the three rounds of adversarial review, and for writing the limits down where people will read them.
Thank you for running the commands and for the follow-up.
Changelog spelling: agreed. I did not run node --test ./-suite.test.mjs, and that was my error. Please use node ./-suite.test.mjs, or drop the example.
Subshell form (cd web && npx vitest run src/lib.test.ts): yes. The shell stays at root=, and two bytes per row is a small cost. Please make that change in the follow-up, and update the changelog sentence about the reused shell.
One conflict: test/printf_parity.manifest help_all. Both sides had moved the
--help bytes (the train's help additions; main's #442 sentence in the
--affected run= legend, src/cli.h). Re-pinned help_all to the merged binary's
bytes (4e405974...); it is the only label that moved (UPDATE_GOLDEN_EXPECT=
help_all matched). No src/ conflict; README, COMMANDS.md auto-merged.

redhat-et#442, redhat-et#330)
Follow-up to redhat-et#442. A vitest or jest command is now printed only for a file the runner's
default include collects: x.test.helper.ts (both runners) and a vitest __tests__/x.ts used
to get a command that exits 1 with "No test files found"; they are run_unknown="1" now.
The check reads the package-relative path, so a __tests__ directory above the package is not
jest's default. A vitest.config.* / jest.config.* include is not read (stated floor).
Also: pin arms n8a-d for the four spellJsRun predicates no gate covered, the substring
over-run limit and the corrected manual spelling (node ./-suite.test.mjs) in the changelog
fragment, and credits: @llvm-x86 (redhat-et#335, redhat-et#442), @rainhuang0220 (redhat-et#330).

@llvm-x86 confirmed on redhat-et#442 that the subshell form is wanted. A bare `cd <pkg> && cmd` leaves
a shell that keeps its directory between calls (an agent's) inside the package, so the next
pasted row fails with "No such file or directory". The row is now `(cd <pkg> && <runner> <path>)`.
Help text and the changelog fragment say so; arms n1-n3, n6, n8b follow the spelling and n9
runs a printed row with pwd to show the next command still starts at root=.
