What

Mutation testing in CI. Every guard in this repository has been broken on purpose at least once to see that it notices, but those revert probes lived in throwaway scripts outside the repository and ran on one machine, a slice at a time. They are now one registry in git, run by GitHub:

  • weekly (Friday 02:07 UTC, and by hand from the Actions tab): every entry, in sixteen parts side by side. Red when an entry is not caught or a part does not finish.
  • on a pull request: only the entries the change reaches - a file an entry mutates, the file declaring its test, or a new or changed entry. A report in the run summary, never red, and not a required check.

Files

  • tests/mutation/entries.json - 745 entries, ASCII only, each with the text it breaks, the file, and the test that must go red. 31 are NOT HERE (a live browser, the environment harness, an elevated session, a virtual machine) and say so with their reason.
  • tests/mutation/mutate.ps1 - the runner, for Rust (cargo test, cargo clippy) and C# (dotnet test on Microsoft.Testing.Platform).
  • tests/mutation/report.ps1 - puts the parts together.
  • tests/mutation/json.ps1 - one JSON reader for both scripts, through System.Text.Json.
  • .github/workflows/mutation.yml - plan, sixteen parts, report. Actions pinned by SHA, contents: read, no persisted credentials.
  • crates/cli/tests/hygiene.rs, crates/cli/tests/names.rs - tests/ is read by the guards, the registry is kept out of the dead-code scan, and a new guard keeps its names English.
  • CONTRIBUTING.md - how an entry is run and added.

Verdicts

caught, MISSED, BROKEN (its own compile step, so a build failure is never read as caught), STALE (an anchor is not in its file exactly once), NO TEST, BASELINE RED (the named test is red before any mutation), TIMEOUT, ERROR, NOT HERE. Each part runs a Rust and a C# canary that must come back BROKEN, or nothing it says is believed.

Checked before opening

  • mutate.ps1 -SelfTest: green, and 12 of 12 planted breaks of the runner's own functions turn it red.
  • report.ps1 -SelfTest: 11 planted runs give the exit code and the words they must.
  • Local runs of named entries only: 9 real entries caught (Rust, C#, clippy, a hook build, both release builds), 3 NOT HERE with their reasons, both canaries BROKEN. Six planted entries with known answers came out 3 MISSED, 2 NO TEST and 1 STALE, so the runner can say a guard missed. The tree was clean after every run.
  • The dead-code scan: a planted dead definition quoted only by the registry is red with the registry left out and green without that - the reason it is left out.
  • cargo test for hygiene (22 to 23 tests), names, network, components and dry_run, clippy with all targets, and the PowerShell lint over the whole repository.

What to expect from this pull request's own run

The runner is new, so every entry is selected, and that run is the inventory. Findings - entries whose code or test moved on, and successor tests not yet measured on a runner - go into a second pull request.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Pull requests now receive mutation-testing checks for relevant changes. These checks report findings without blocking the pull request; scheduled and manually started runs can fail when issues are found.
    • Mutation tests run in parallel, with summaries highlighting incomplete or untrustworthy results.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance for contributors on mutation tests, including how to add checks and run them locally.

…in sixteen parts and reported on pull requests

- tests/mutation/entries.json holds 745 entries, each a text broken in a file and the test that must
  go red: the revert probes of every slice since R4, moved out of throwaway scripts outside the
  repository and named in English. Twenty whose code is gone were left out, and 31 that need a
  machine a runner is not (a live browser, the environment harness, an elevated session, a virtual
  machine) stay in as NOT HERE.
- tests/mutation/mutate.ps1 judges them in Rust and C#: a canary per language that must come back
  BROKEN, the named tests once on the unmutated tree, a compile step of its own so a build failure is
  never read as caught, a time limit per test command, and a recovery file that puts back what a
  stopped run left mutated. A run of every entry is refused unless asked for with -All.
- tests/mutation/report.ps1 puts the parts together. A part that never reported, did not finish or
  whose canary failed is a problem, never a smaller run. tests/mutation/json.ps1 reads JSON for both
  without turning a date-like string into a DateTime.
- .github/workflows/mutation.yml runs every entry on Friday 02:07 UTC in sixteen parts, red on
  findings, and on a pull request only the entries the change reaches, as a report that is never red.
- hygiene.rs and names.rs read tests/ too. The registry is left out of the dead-code scan, where its
  quotations of code counted as uses and hid a dead definition (measured with a planted one), and a
  new guard keeps its names and reasons English.
- CONTRIBUTING.md says how an entry is run and added.

The first run selects every entry, because the runner is new, and is the inventory.

📝 Walkthrough

Adds a PowerShell mutation-testing runner, a result-reporting script, and a Windows GitHub Actions workflow. The workflow selects and shards entries, runs mutations, and reports results. Repository guidance and hygiene checks now cover the mutation registry.

Changes: Mutation testing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Entry registry, selection, and planning
tests/mutation/mutate.ps1, crates/cli/tests/hygiene.rs, crates/cli/tests/names.rs, CONTRIBUTING.md
The runner validates entries, selects them by name or changed files, classifies CI exclusions, and creates shard plans. Repository checks scan the tests tree and validate registry descriptions. Contributor guidance describes local and CI usage.
Mutation execution and recovery
tests/mutation/mutate.ps1
The runner builds clean code, checks canaries and baseline tests, applies mutations, classifies test outcomes, and restores source files. It also supports timeouts, self-tests, and result output.
Part validation and reporting
tests/mutation/json.ps1, tests/mutation/report.ps1
The JSON helpers convert JSON values to PowerShell values. The report script validates part files and totals, summarizes results, emits annotations, and supports optional failure gating.
GitHub Actions orchestration
.github/workflows/mutation.yml
The workflow plans entries, runs selected shards on Windows, uploads result files, and runs the report job. Pull-request runs are not gated by the report; scheduled and manual runs are gated.

This change adds mutation-testing tooling and a weekly workflow, and it does not affect the shipped product. One narrow case can report a C# mutation as caught when the test was already failing before the mutation. The impact is limited to the accuracy of mutation reports, so the change can be merged with a small follow-up fix.

Full details: Tests For Changed Behavior

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only CI workflow, documentation, mutation-test infrastructure, and hygiene test coverage. It does not change shipped non-UI runtime behavior. No existing test assertions were deleted, skipped, or weakened; the Rust changes expand scanned paths and add a registry-language test.

Full details: No Secrets Or Debug Leftovers

Explanation

The PR adds no private AI files or .env files. Added-line scans found no credential assignments, private keys, personal emails, internal hosts/IPs, or local absolute paths. The only URLs are public Microsoft and WiX schema URLs. No explicit debug calls were added; PowerShell Write-Output is used for intended CI reports and self-test status.

Full details: No Hardcoded Ui Styling

Explanation

The pull request changes only CI, documentation, Rust hygiene tests, JSON registry data, and PowerShell mutation scripts. It does not add or modify XAML, Slint, Fyne, Tkinter, or WPF UI code. The hardcoded UI styling check is not applicable.

Full details: No Obvious Performance Problems

Explanation

No clear performance problem is introduced. The workflow intentionally distributes 745 isolated mutation probes across up to 16 jobs. mutate.ps1 batches baseline test names in groups of 40, while each mutation still requires its own source change, build, and test to produce a valid verdict. The remaining scans and JSON processing are linear over the tracked files and registry, with no UI-thread work, polling loop, or avoidable per-item external call identified.

Full details: System Changes Are Reversible

Explanation

The PR does not add code that changes the listed system state. The new runner launches bounded cargo/dotnet processes and mutates repository source files, with originals saved and restored in finally and recovery handled on the next run. Searches of the added code found no firewall, proxy, network-rule, system-time setter, service, registry, driver, or hooking/injection API. Hook and registry references are mutation-registry data for existing code, not new system-state operations.

Full details: Scope, Duplication And Docs

Explanation

The PR scope matches its title and description: it adds the mutation registry, runner, report, workflow, and related hygiene checks. CONTRIBUTING.md documents the registry, pull-request and weekly behavior, entry creation, and new local mutate.ps1 options. No public API, product CLI, persisted user-data format, or backward-incompatible configuration change is introduced. Repository searches found no existing mutation runner or duplicate JSON helper.

Full details: Desktop Robustness

Explanation

The new mutation runner writes persistent JSON state with File.WriteAllText at tests/mutation/mutate.ps1:511 and :1183, without a temporary-file-and-replace sequence. An interruption can leave the recovery or result file truncated. A corrupted recovery file then reaches ConvertFrom-JsonText at :523 during startup (:1057) without handling, so the runner crashes instead of reporting a recoverable error. The registry read at :186 also propagates missing or malformed-file errors. Other checks are addressed: paths use PSScriptRoot/the repository root, culture is invariant, and process/workflow timeouts and progress output exist.

Resolution

Write recovery and part-state JSON to a temporary file in the same directory, flush it, and atomically replace the destination. Catch missing, malformed, and structurally invalid recovery and registry files; report the path and stop safely without mutating files. Keep an invalid recovery file for diagnosis or quarantine it instead of crashing. Add tests for interrupted writes, missing files, and corrupted JSON.

Full details: Safe File Parsing

Explanation

The new runner trusts JSON paths. Get-RegistryProblems only checks that edit.file is non-empty (tests/mutation/mutate.ps1:149-151). Get-MutatedSources then applies Join-Path $Root $edit.file (line 478) and uses ReadAllBytes/WriteAllBytes (lines 481, 591, 595). A registry value such as ..\outside.txt can therefore read and overwrite a file outside the checkout. Restore-FromRecovery also trusts the deserialized file.path and writes it (lines 523-528). The JSON helper uses unbounded ReadAllText plus JsonDocument.Parse (json.ps1:39-47), so a very large registry or result file can exhaust memory; malformed registry JSON is not caught before mutate.ps1 terminates at line 186.

Resolution

Validate every registry and recovery path before any file operation. Reject rooted paths and canonical paths whose Path.GetRelativePath($root,$full) is .. or starts with ..\/../; reject reparse-point or symlink components, or require the path to be a tracked file under the checkout. Replace raw Join-Path use with this checked resolver and apply the same check in Restore-FromRecovery. Read registry and result files through a bounded stream or enforce a maximum byte length before allocation. Set an explicit JsonDocumentOptions.MaxDepth, catch parse failures for the registry, and return a controlled validation error instead of allowing an unhandled exception.

Full details: Clear User-Facing Text

Explanation

The new mutation tools add user-facing error text that exposes raw exception messages. tests/mutation/report.ps1:108 appends $_.Exception.Message when a result file is invalid, and tests/mutation/mutate.ps1:1103 includes the exception when the base registry cannot be read. These messages do not provide a controlled explanation and action. The report legend at report.ps1:232 also has unclear wording such as “NO TEST that the filter ran no test” and “ERROR that the test command failed.”

Resolution

Replace raw exception interpolation with controlled, action-oriented text. For example: part $part result file is invalid or unreadable. Check result-$part.json and rerun that part. For the base registry, use: The mutation registry at the selected base cannot be read. Check tests/mutation/entries.json at that commit, then rerun with a valid base. Rewrite the legend as: NO TEST means the filter ran zero tests; check whether the test was renamed or removed. ERROR means the test command failed without identifying a failed test; inspect the part log and fix the command or test.

Full details: No Resource Leaks

Explanation

The added ChronoMockMutation.NativeRun.Run in tests/mutation/mutate.ps1:248-267 leaks resources. Each invocation creates outputEnded and errorEnded ManualResetEventSlim objects and a Process. The two events are never disposed. The process is disposed only when drained is true; the intentional 30-second bounded-drain path can return drained == false, leaving the Process undisposed. The runner invokes this helper repeatedly for builds and tests, so handles can accumulate during a long mutation run.

Resolution

Update NativeRun.Run to use a try/finally lifecycle. On every path, stop or cancel asynchronous output and error reads after the process exits or is killed, wait until the callbacks have stopped, then dispose Process, outputEnded, and errorEnded. Also clean up when process startup or read setup throws. Do not dispose the events until no callback can call Set.

## Building and checking

### Mutation testing

If you add a guard, add the entry that proves it can fail. A local run names its
entries or compares with a base - a run of every entry takes hours and is refused
unless asked for with `-All`:

```bash
pwsh -File tests/mutation/mutate.ps1 -Only "r4-18 sign reversed"
pwsh -File tests/mutation/mutate.ps1 -Base origin/main
418-418: 🚀 Performance & Scalability
The MSBuild-node explanation is contradicted. The Roslyn compiler server is persistent, but its standard-handle configuration is unavailable. Therefore the claim that it keeps this runner’s redirected handles open, and the proposed fix, cannot be decided.
No change is needed for all-NOT HERE parts.
mutate.ps1 initializes built = $true, writes the completed state, and exits before any build when every selected entry is NOT HERE. The report therefore does not add a build failure for this case.
Comment thread tests/mutation/mutate.ps1 Outdated
…ol's output, and a C# baseline that failed without a name is red
- The first run on GitHub reported 197 C# entries as ERROR although each had a named failure and exit
  code 2: on a runner the test platform colours its output even into a pipe, so the summary read
  ESC[31m failed: 1 and no pattern anchored at the start of a line matched it. Every output now passes
  through ConvertTo-PlainText inside Invoke-Native. The same colour hid the names of red tests from the
  baseline.
- A C# baseline batch that exits 2 with no red test the runner could read now takes its entries as
  red, as the Rust branch already did (review finding). Only exit 8, zero tests ran, is not a failure
  of the tree. The rule is Test-BaselineUnclear, so the self test can ask it.
- The self test plants the coloured output as it came from the runner and runs a real child process
  through Invoke-Native that writes colour on both channels and exits with 3. Fifteen reversal probes
  of the runner's functions, the three new ones included, each turn it red.
- The comment on the bounded wait for output no longer states, unmeasured, that a build server holds
  the pipe open (review finding).
…y its address
`held::tests::a_view_is_unmapped_unless_the_session_takes_it` asked VirtualQuery whether anything
was mapped at the address of a view it had just dropped. The tests of the chrono-mech binary map
memory in parallel, so memory another test took there made the question answer "mapped" - red in
the Gates job of donislawdev#112 and in two parts of each full mutation run on donislawdev#113, with no mutation applied.
The test now writes a random, never zero marker into each view and reads it back through
ReadProcessMemory on its own process, which fails instead of faulting when the page is gone, and
only from a committed mapped view. Before the question about the dropped view it maps a new view at
the same address, so the case CI ran into happens in every run. Going back to a question about the
address is red in 50 of 50 runs of the test alone and in 10 of 10 runs of the whole library, the
fixed test green in 100 of 100 and 20 of 20.
A guard failing in `a_target_dropped_before_it_runs_is_ended` no longer leaves a suspended ping
behind.
Six registry entries for held.rs, which had none: the view never unmapped, the view handed to the
session unmapped anyway, the target left suspended, the guard left armed after the hand-over, any
view at the address taken for ours, and a question that sees nothing. All six caught.
