fix: never publish again under an ended track's name - #6780
Finishes quest/m1/name-reuse.md: no first-party publisher finishes a track and then publishes under the same name again.
Changes
moq-gst sink: a run never publishes a track name it ended again. A reader that saw a clean end (here or at a relay) treats it as final, so continuing the name past it reaches no established reader.
Caps that build the same importer keep the live producer, so its readers continue into the new caps. Video configures in band (h264/h265 byte-stream, AV1, VP8, VP9) and opaque data has no config, so only their media type counts. An audio or text pad builds from its whole caps (codec config, rate, channels, language), so any change there is new content.
Anything that needs a new producer for a name the run ended (new codec config, a pad requested again, a stream resumed after EOS) publishes as the first <name>/<n> the run has not used (live or ended), as js/publish does. The pad's track property reads back the minted name. Before, each of these restarted at group 0 under the old name.
moq-net / @moq/net IETF subscriber: a PUBLISH_DONE other than TRACK_ENDED (SUBSCRIPTION_ENDED on drafts 14-19) still drains the data streams in flight, then aborts the copy with an error. Before, it ended the copy cleanly at its received edge. The track had not ended there, and the copy a later reader subscribes to continues past that point.
moq-mux timeline error path: a report the segmenter rejects, or a record that fails to publish, now aborts the timeline track with the cause. A moq-net error is passed through; anything else becomes StreamError::Internal. Before, the track was dropped (readers saw Dropped) or finished cleanly, which reads as a complete index.
doc/bin/gstreamer.md: says when a track stays live and when it is renamed.
Decisions
Review #pullrequestreview-5642689439 (P1): the maintainer chose to fix it here. An earlier head continued a re-published name past its predecessor's groups; that is replaced by the live-producer / fresh-name split above, and its moq-mux support (finish() after an unfollowed seek, public next_sequence) is reverted.
Same-importer caps keep the whole importer rather than rebuilding it on the existing producer. No caps change leaves the importer's inputs equal yet needs a new importer: video reads its config in band and every video importer re-mirrors a changed config, and every field an audio or text pad reads is decoder or selection identity. So import::Track constructors did not need to accept an existing producer, and no binding changes.
The fresh name covers a re-requested pad and a resume after EOS too, not only a codec change: both followed a clean finish, the same failure the P1 describes.
A minted name is also the catalog rendition key (camera/1), since moq-mux keys renditions by track name. js/publish keeps the catalog ID and sets the rendition's track field instead.
Audited, no change needed
moq-mux timeline re-enrollment: still accepts a producer that restarts its positions. The indexed track can be a new instance of a referenced sibling broadcast, which legitimately restarts at 0 (moq-hls a_replaced_sibling_ends_the_rendition). A failed timeline track is never created again under its name.
moq-cli export --echo retire: each feedback path is a new broadcast with a fresh epoch.
moq-rtsp / moq-rtmp (FLV): tracks use unique_track.
cpp/obs: tracks use generated names (MediaTarget::kNamed), and each start creates a new broadcast.
js/publish: already mints <id>/<n> for a decoder-identity change and keeps each track for the broadcast's life.
Public API / wire impact
moq-gst: behavior only. A named pad's track can be published as <track>/<n> (read back through track); a video or opaque caps change no longer ends the track.
moq-mux: behavior only. A failed timeline track aborts with its cause.
moq-net (Rust) and @moq/net: behavior only. A non-TRACK_ENDED PUBLISH_DONE ends the local copy with an error instead of a clean end.
Wire: none.
Tests
Each test fails without its fix:
moq-gst renegotiation_keeps_an_established_reader (reproduces the P1: the reader subscribed before renegotiation saw the track end), a_new_codec_config_takes_a_fresh_name, an_ended_name_is_never_published_again, a_fresh_name_skips_a_live_one. an_unresolved_pad_resumed_after_eos_publishes_without_new_caps now expects the resumed track as video/1.
moq-mux a_rejected_report_fails_the_timeline now asserts the reader sees StreamError::Internal, not Dropped.
moq-net a_subscription_ended_copy_does_not_linger now also asserts the reader sees an error. @moq/net a SUBSCRIPTION_ENDED PUBLISH_DONE drains, then aborts the track.
Checks: just check passes. Not run: just test interop --all (no wire change).
Suggested follow-ups
moq-mux video importers re-mirror a changed in-band config (profile, level, description) under the same rendition name, which the AGENTS.md invariant says should be immutable. A decoder-identity change in band could move to a fresh track, like moq-gst now does at caps time.
moq-mux container::Producer::finish() after an unfollowed seek(n) still ends at the largest group, below n. No caller relies on it after this PR.
A name always means the same content, so a track published again under
the same name must number its groups past its predecessor's.
- moq-gst: a named pad's track continues past the groups the run already
published under that name (renegotiation, a re-requested pad, a resume).
- moq-mux: finish() after an unfollowed seek ends past the seek, through
an empty group at it, instead of below the predecessor's groups.
import::Track and container::Producer expose next_sequence().
- moq-net, @moq/net: a non-TRACK_ENDED PUBLISH_DONE drains, then aborts
the copy instead of declaring an end the track runs past.

Publishers never reuse a finished track's name
fix: continue a re-published track past its predecessor's groups
Oct 25, 2026
P1 — Do not clean-finish a track that will continue under the same name (rs/moq-gst/src/sink/pad.rs:597–602, finish at 933–939). build still finalizes the predecessor, declaring its next sequence the permanent exclusive end. A relay/front already consuming that name treats a clean end as final; resume also retains that end and rejects later content at/past it. For groups 0–1 followed by caps renegotiation, the predecessor ends at 2 and the replacement now publishes group 2: an established relay reader still ends instead of continuing. Preserve the live producer across caps changes, retire the replaceable copy without declaring a permanent end, or advertise a new name. Add a regression with a front/relay reader established before renegotiation; the new direct-broadcast tests subscribe after replacement.
This is an incomplete fix of the existing republish behavior, not newly introduced clean-finalization. The Rust/JS SUBSCRIPTION_ENDED drain-then-error changes correctly distinguish subscription termination from track termination; no additional actionable bugs found in the inspected changes.
Verification: static inspection of changed code and surrounding front/resume lifecycle only. Tests and interop were not run.
A rejected report dropped the timeline track, so readers saw Dropped, and
a failed publish finished it cleanly, which reads as a complete index.
Both now abort with the cause: a moq-net error as is, anything else as
StreamError::Internal.

The timeline failure-handling delta is directionally sound: failed publication now aborts the sidecar with its failure rather than declaring a clean end. No new actionable bugs found in this delta. The prior P1 on clean-finishing a same-name GStreamer predecessor remains open and unchanged: #6780 (review).
Verification: static comparison and surrounding timeline/window ownership inspection only; tests and interop not run.
The sink now tracks ended explicit track names within each run and assigns fresh names when producers are rebuilt. It preserves live producers for caps that build the same importer. Subscriber handling distinguishes SUBSCRIPTION_ENDED from TRACK_ENDED. Timeline publishing and recording failures abort tracks with errors. Documentation, tests, and quest entries are updated.

Consume stale pending sequences in finish().
When the largest group is 5 and a pending seek is 3, finish() leaves 3 pending because it only consumes values greater than after_largest() (6). moq-gst records 3 and passes it to the rebuilt producer, which can then reopen at a predecessor sequence instead of continuing at 6. This can recreate an evicted sequence or fail as a duplicate while that sequence remains live.

Merge agent: not landing this yet. The OpenAI P1 from the 5d349e6347 review is still open and needs a design call. The sink still FINs the predecessor (its end becomes the next sequence) and then publishes more groups under the same name. A FIN is final, so a relay or front reader established before renegotiation ends there instead of continuing. Options:
Keep the live track producer across caps renegotiation (re-init the importer on the same producer, no FIN), and give a released-then-requested pad or a post-EOS resume a fresh name, since its predecessor really ended. (Recommended: no FIN is ever followed by more content under that name.)
Retire the predecessor without a clean end (abort), so readers resubscribe and pick up the continuation.
Always publish a new name per instance, as js/publish does with <id>/<n>.
Also open: CodeRabbit's outside-diff finding on container::Producer::finish (a stale pending_sequence at or below after_largest() is left pending and handed to the rebuilt producer). It looks valid and is a quick fix.
A seek at or below the largest group that no group followed stayed
pending after finish, so next_sequence reported it and a replacement
would reopen below the predecessor's groups.

Reviewed commit: 0d1b3ef
Compared with reviewed b1e0b5b.
The stale-seek fix in rs/moq-mux/src/container/producer.rs:763–767 addresses CodeRabbit’s existing finding: finishing now consumes pending seeks even when they precede the live edge, so next_sequence() cannot pass a stale sequence to a replacement. The focused regression checks that sequence 5 followed by an unwritten seek to 3 finishes with next sequence 6. This is a small, appropriate correction; no new actionable bugs found in this delta.
The prior GStreamer same-name clean-finalization P1 remains unchanged and open: #6780 (review).
Verification: static comparison with the last reviewed commit and inspection of surrounding seek/cut/finish logic; tests and interop were not run.
Caps that build the same importer (video configures in band, opaque data has
no config) now keep the live producer, so a reader subscribed before the
renegotiation continues into the new caps. Anything that needs a new
producer for a name the run already ended (a new codec config, a pad
requested again, a stream resumed after EOS) publishes as <name>/<n>, since
a reader that saw the clean end never follows the name into a successor.
This replaces the continue-past-the-predecessor approach, so the moq-mux
seek-on-finish and next_sequence additions are reverted.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Re the P1 review: agreed and fixed in 13a4e0ca42. A clean finish is final for any reader that saw it, so continuing a name past its predecessor's groups only reached readers that subscribed after the replacement.
Caps that build the same importer keep the live producer. Video configures in band and opaque data has no config, so a video caps change (such as a resolution) no longer touches the track. renegotiation_keeps_an_established_reader subscribes before the renegotiation and reads into the new caps; on the previous head that reader saw the track end.
Anything that needs a new producer for a name the run already ended (a new codec config, a pad requested again, a stream resumed after EOS) publishes as <name>/<n>, as js/publish does. Covered by a_new_codec_config_takes_a_fresh_name and an_ended_name_is_never_published_again.
The continuation machinery is gone: the run-wide next-sequence map, the opaque pending group, and moq-mux's finish() after seek and public next_sequence.
Re the stale-seek finding: it was valid and fixed at 0d1b3ef2e1, and the code it touched is now gone. moq-gst no longer seeks a replacement past its predecessor (it keeps the producer live or takes a fresh name, see 13a4e0ca42), so the container::Producer::finish() change and its tests are reverted with it.

Compared with reviewed 0d1b3ef, separating incoming main changes from the PR delta.
The prior same-name clean-finalization P1 is addressed: equivalent video caps keep the existing producer alive, while replacements after a clean end use fresh names. This is simpler and more consistent with permanent track ends than carrying predecessor sequence counters; the old continuation/seek scaffolding is removed. The established-reader and EOS-resume regressions target the earlier gap.
One remaining P2: rs/moq-gst/src/sink/pad.rs:70–72 chooses a replacement suffix without considering live explicit names. With camera and camera/1 both active, restarting camera picks occupied camera/1 and reserve_track fails, permanently invalidating the restarting pad. I independently confirmed the same issue already reported here; please include live reservations when selecting the suffix and add that two-pad regression: #6780 (comment). No duplicate inline comment added.
Verification: static inspection of the base-relative diff, naming/build/failure paths and regression tests; tests and relay interop were not run.
A run now records every configured name it publishes, not only the ended
ones, so restarting camera while another pad publishes camera/1 takes
camera/2 instead of failing on the duplicate.

The remaining replacement-name collision finding is fixed in rs/moq-gst/src/sink/pad.rs:64–79: configured names are now recorded while live, and generated suffixes skip every recorded name. The new two-pad regression keeps levels/1 active while restarting levels and checks selection of levels/2. Explicit duplicate requests still fail rather than silently changing identity. This is a focused, appropriate fix; no new actionable bugs found in this delta. The earlier clean-finalization P1 remains addressed by the preceding redesign.
Verification: static inspection of the one-commit delta and surrounding claim/build/finalization flow; tests and relay interop were not run.

moq-gst: same-importer caps (video, opaque) keep the live producer, so established readers continue; anything that needs a new producer for an ended name publishes as the first unused <name>/<n>. The earlier continue-past-the-predecessor approach and its moq-mux support are reverted.
Kept the whole importer instead of rebuilding it on the existing producer: no caps change keeps the importer inputs equal yet needs a new importer, so import::Track constructors and the bindings are unchanged.
moq-net / @moq/net and the moq-mux timeline fixes are unchanged from the earlier heads.
Reviews: the OpenAI P1 and the Codex/OpenAI live-name P2 are fixed; CodeRabbit's stale-seek finding is moot (code removed). The OpenAI review of this head found nothing new.
Checks: just check passed before the last commit; just rs test -p moq-gst and rustfmt passed on it.
Live::finish discards the error from output.finish(). A window group can fail before the underlying track reaches finish, so dropping the retained producer can expose Error::Dropped instead of the finalization error.
