refactor(net)!: Path and Relative lose their lifetime - #6843
moq_net::Path<'a> threads a lifetime through every API and wire message that carries a path, with PathOwned, AsPath, and to_owned/into_owned/borrow to move between the borrowed and owned forms. The API has to break before the next release cut anyway, and the lifetime costs more than it saves: owning a borrowed path allocates, and most paths are short.
Approach
Path is one owned 24-byte type (the same size as today) with three representations:
Inline: up to 22 bytes (10 on 32-bit targets) are stored in place. Cloning one copies bytes, with no atomics and no allocation.
Static:Path::from_static("room") borrows a literal.
Shared: a longer path is an Arc<str> plus a u16 start offset, so strip_prefix and clones share one allocation, as owned paths do today. Every path is at most 16 KiB (below), so the offset always fits: a const assertion ties Path::MAX_BYTES to u16::MAX, and the one unchecked constructor debug_asserts the length.
The only unsafe is a from_utf8_unchecked on the inline bytes, with a SAFETY comment. Relative wraps a Path and loses its lifetime too.
has_prefix, strip_prefix, join, relative, and resolve take &Path. AsPath is deleted. Path::new(&str) copies, and Path::from_static is free. Entry points take impl TryInto<Path, ...> per decision 5.
Every wire message whose lifetime existed only for its path drops it. In lite, that is AnnounceBroadcast, PathRef, AnnounceRequest, AnnounceInit, and Tracks. In ietf, it is PublishNamespace, PublishNamespaceDone, SubscribeNamespace, SubscribeNamespaceLegacy, UnsubscribeNamespace, Namespace, NamespaceDone, and SubscribeTracks. The other lifetimes left on internal messages belong to their Cow track names and reason strings, not to paths.
No shims: every PathOwned, RelativeOwned, to_owned(), into_owned(), and borrow() on a path is renamed or removed across the workspace.
✅ Fallible constructors (2026-10-26), following http::Uri.Path::new, Relative::new, join, and resolve return Result<_, path::TooLong>. TryFrom<&str>, TryFrom<&String>, and TryFrom<String> replace the From impls. Path::from_static panics on an oversized literal. Origin entry points (publish, create_broadcast, request_broadcast, scope, mount, follow, routed, ...) take impl TryInto<Path, Error: Into<Error>>, so &str, String, Path, and &Path all still work and a too-long string fails with Error::BoundsExceeded. The slice_from copy fallback is deleted.
Deviations from the decisions:
✅ start: u16, not u32 (accepted; wire paths are capped at 16 KiB, below). On 64-bit both fit in 24 bytes. On wasm32, u32 grew Path from main's 12 bytes to 16 and pushed track::Producer over clippy's result_large_err limit. With u16, Path is 12 bytes there, the same as main.
next_part is not re-added.moq-dev/moq#6744 removed it as unused.
hipstr was measured and rejected.HipStr<'static> matches on size (24 bytes, 23 inline), but its shared form boxes a Vec. That makes a long path built from &str cost two allocations instead of one, and the table shows it losing on every long-path row. It also stores a tagged pointer with exposed provenance.
Path length limit
moq had no byte limit on paths, only Path::MAX_PARTS (32). Lite messages are framed at 64 KiB and the ietf namespace at 4096 bytes, but a lite AnnounceInit (64 MiB frame) or a lite-07 compressed join could still carry a longer path, which a relay then could not forward. This PR caps a path at 16 KiB (16,384 bytes; Path::MAX_BYTES), in both implementations and the draft. 64 KiB would fill the whole lite message limit, so no message carrying such a path could be encoded; 16 KiB leaves the other fields room, and a test round-trips a lite Tracks message at the limit.
In Rust no Path can exceed it (decision 5), so encode needs no check. Decode fails with BoundsExceeded on a wire string over the limit, measured before normalization so padding slashes can't carry a longer one.
The lite-07 announce decoder fails with ProtocolViolation when a resolved join exceeds it.
@moq/netPath.encode, Path.decode, and its lite-07 resolver apply the same limit in UTF-8 bytes (Path.MAX_BYTES), with decode also measuring the raw string.
The moq-lite draft states both path limits (32 segments, 16,384 bytes), which it did not before.
Origin entry points fail with BoundsExceeded, and a mount never resolves or presents a name past it. A request whose path overflows the limit under a deep root is refused on its own, in every draft: the publishers log the path beside the root instead of joining it, so the lookup refuses it (an ietf REQUEST_ERROR or SUBSCRIBE_ERROR, a lite stream reset) and the session stays open.
How the fallible constructors landed (about 140 files):
538 literal Path::new("...") calls became Path::from_static, plus about 330 more literals that used to coerce through From<&str> into an impl Into<Path> parameter.
265 Path::new/Relative::new calls on runtime strings handle the error: ? where input comes from a user, config, or the wire, .ok() where the function already returns Option, and unwrap in tests.
Of 54 internal joins, 26 can fail and propagate (subscriber-side joins of a wire suffix, mounts, absolute). The other 28 rebuild a path from a prefix and suffix split off one bounded path, so they call a crate-private rejoin that expects.
40 entry points take impl TryInto<Path, ...>: the moq-net origin plus forwarders in moq-mux (follow::Instances::new), moq-rtc's client, and moq-room's claims. From<Infallible> for Error makes Path and &Path satisfy the bound.
Things that turned out awkward:
origin::{Producer, Consumer}::absolute and announce::Consumer::absolute return Result, since joining the root can overflow.
moq transcode now fails when --output cannot reference the source broadcast, rather than silently publishing a catalog without the source renditions.
Path::try_resolve returns None for both "escapes the root" and "too long". Its callers already treat None as unresolvable, so splitting the cases had no consumer.
Infallible sinks that take impl Into<Path> (stats::Tier::new, session, request, the moq-rtmp, moq-srt, and moq-rtc server entry points, ts::Programs::new, catalog::Echo::new) no longer accept a &str. Callers pass Path::from_static or Path::new(s)?. Making them TryInto would add TooLong to each crate's error type for no current caller that needs it.
moq-relay's auth::Token::new and Lease::new became fallible: a grant naming a root, mount, tier, or label over 16 KiB is refused as Forbidden. --cluster-tier is validated once in Cluster::new, so the LAN peer's self-minted grant expects. Refusal metrics fall back to the default tier and root when the refusal's own label is too long.
Two moq-stats tests overflowed a group with one 32 MiB label. A label can't be that long now, so they use about 2,000 labels of nearly 16 KiB each.
The test that asserted two short paths share one allocation now asserts that long paths share through clone and strip_prefix, and that a short remainder moves inline. Short paths are inline by design, so they have nothing to share. New tests cover the inline boundary (including joins), from_static borrowing and its panic, and every constructor at and just past MAX_BYTES.
The lite-07 announce decoder now joins a base's head as a &str (Path::concat) instead of building an intermediate Path. join sizes its buffer up front, because format! reallocated.
Allocations per operation
rs/moq-net/benches/path.rs (new) counts allocations through the global allocator, so the numbers are deterministic. The "main" column is the same bench on origin/main, adapted only where main needs to_owned(). Short is 10 bytes, medium is 22, and long is 47. Announce rows are per message, and fan-out rows are per cursor per publish+retract.

No row allocates more than main, and the fallible constructors changed no row (rerun on the pushed head). Times were not re-measured: the spike found no difference outside noise except faster clone, new, and join on short paths.
Impact
moq-net (breaking):
Path<'a> and PathOwned are now Path, and Relative<'a> and RelativeOwned are now Relative.
AsPath is removed. Origin entry points take impl TryInto<Path, Error: Into<Error>>, which accepts &str, String, &String, Path, and &Path. Other impl AsPath parameters take impl Into<Path>, which accepts Path and &Path.
Path::new, Relative::new, join, and resolve return Result<_, path::TooLong>; TryFrom replaces From for strings; absolute returns Result. Path::MAX_BYTES and path::TooLong are new.
has_prefix, strip_prefix, join, and relative take &Path.
Path::{to_owned, into_owned, borrow} and the matching Relative methods are removed: drop the call, or clone() a &Path.
Path::from_static is new, and Path::empty is now const.
Path::from_static panics on a literal over 16 KiB, and decode refuses a longer path with BoundsExceeded.
Migrate with rs/moq-net/MIGRATE.md.
Downstream crates (breaking): hang, moq-mux, moq-transcode, moq-rtmp, moq-srt, moq-rtc, moq-stats, and moq-relay signatures name the new types, and their impl Into<Path> parameters no longer take a &str. moq-relay's auth::Token::new and Lease::new and moq-room's broadcast_path return Result. Each has a MIGRATE.md entry.
@moq/net:Path.MAX_BYTES is new, and Path.encode/Path.decode throw on a path over 16 KiB.
Wire: a path over 16 KiB is now a decode error (PROTOCOL_VIOLATION), stated in the moq-lite-07 draft. Only an AnnounceInit or a lite-07 compressed join could carry one before.
Alternatives
hipstr (above).
Keep a PathOwned alias or to_owned shims: ruled out by the decision.
A u32 start: costs 4 bytes per path on 32-bit targets (above).
Checks
just check passes on the merged head (Rust, Python, JS, kt, go, cpp, obs, drill, drafts, quest). Locally, nix flake check failed building the runner VM image (unshare is not permitted in this sandbox), and just dart check reported a generator-version diff in an unrelated runtime template; this PR does not change the FFI surface, so CI decides both.
The allocation bench was rerun after the fallible constructors and matches the "this PR" column on every row.
The wasm32 clippy lane passes, and the drill mutation patches still apply.
just test interop --all passes on the merged head (the path limit is a wire refusal).
Not run: just rs loom, and just rs fuzz (the path fuzz target body is updated and its regressions replay under just check).
Follow-ups
moq-dev/moq#6826 decodes paths straight from wire bytes. With inline storage, that removes the intermediate String for every path, which should drop another allocation from each decode row above.
P3 — benchmark successful suffix stripping for every size (rs/moq-net/benches/path.rs:74–79): the fixed room prefix matches SHORT, but MEDIUM starts with anon and LONG with 1234. Those two strip-prefix rows therefore measure an early None, never the inline/shared suffix paths whose allocations they purport to measure. Derive the prefix from each sample's first segment and assert/unwrap the result; retain a separately named miss case if useful. Otherwise a regression allocating on long-path slicing remains invisible in this benchmark.
Overall direction: the single owned type simplifies the API, and the small inline/static/shared representation keeps the added complexity localized. The checked u16 offset fallback and content-based equality/hash are consistent with that design; I found no actionable production-code bug in the inspected changes.
Verification: static inspection of the representation, normalization/slicing, relative resolution, lite compression, wire/type migrations and benchmark/tests. I did not run builds, tests, benchmarks, fuzzing or interop; the PR's reported check results were not independently verified.

Walkthrough
This change migrates the repository from lifetime-parameterized Path and owned path aliases to lifetime-free Path and Relative types. Path construction, joining, resolution, and decoding now enforce a 16 KiB limit and return errors where required. Lite and IETF protocol handling propagates oversized-path failures. Dependent crates, APIs, tests, benchmarks, migration notes, and JavaScript path validation are updated.

Decode, encode, the lite-07 compressed join, and origin publish, announce,
and mount refuse a path longer than 64 KiB, as they already refuse one
deeper than MAX_PARTS. Before, an AnnounceInit or a compressed join could
carry a longer path, which a relay then could not forward.

Compared with my previous reviewed head a13b75e; one substantive commit, unchanged base.
P2 — reserve message overhead in the forwarding limit (rs/moq-net/src/path/mod.rs:94–100): MAX_LEN equals the entire lite message-body ceiling (65,535). A path at this newly accepted boundary passes fits_wire() and origin publication, but a Tracks { broadcast: path, epoch: None } already exceeds that ceiling once its string-length prefix is encoded; lite/message.rs returns EncodeError::TooLarge. The new bare-Path round-trip test misses this, so the advertised guarantee that accepted paths can be forwarded is still false at the boundary. Choose a path budget accounting for the relevant message overhead (and validate variable-size fields at their message boundary), and test an actual size-prefixed request/announcement at the accepted maximum.
The new Rust-only resolved-path rejection also disagrees with JS's segment-count-only check; this is already independently reported in the existing thread, so I am not duplicating it inline.
Direction: centralizing bounds is sensible, but keep the protocol policy synchronized and distinguish path bytes from a complete message budget. Verification was static inspection of the four-file delta and relevant Rust framing/JS decoder context; no builds, tests or interop were run.
Path.encode, Path.decode, and the lite-07 announce resolver in @moq/net
refuse a path over 65,535 UTF-8 bytes, as moq-net now does, and the
moq-lite draft states both path limits.

The previously referenced Rust/JS limit mismatch is addressed by the JS UTF-8 byte check, compressed-announcement validation and matching draft change. Sharing Path.check keeps the validation simple; the UTF-16 fast-path bound is conservative. No new actionable bugs found in this delta.
Verification: static review of the six-file delta, byte-boundary tests and surrounding decoder code. No builds, tests or interoperability checks were run.
If a consumer requests a path longer than Path::MAX_LEN under a root dynamic route, OriginScope::resolve returns it unchanged. Consumer::request can then send that path to the origin handler, although path encoding rejects it. Check the named path with fits_wire() before either resolution branch, and return BoundsExceeded for an oversized request.

A 65,535-byte path filled the whole lite message limit, so no message

Addressing the automated review findings in 48c3430:
P2, path budget vs message size: agreed, a 65,535-byte path filled the whole lite message limit. The cap is now 16 KiB (16,384 bytes) in moq-net, @moq/net, and the draft, which leaves 48 KiB for a message's other fields. test_wire_max_len now round-trips a size-prefixed lite Tracks message at the limit.
P3, bench prefixes: each sample now strips its own first segment and unwraps the result. All three rows are still 0 allocations (short and medium move inline, long shares the buffer), and main's borrowed strip_prefix was 0 as well, so the table is unchanged.

Both of my outstanding findings are addressed:
P2 forwarding-boundary case: the synchronized 16 KiB path cap leaves framing headroom, and the added Tracks round-trip covers the concrete maximum-path failure previously identified. Complete-message checks still matter for variable-size companion fields.
P3 benchmark prefix: each sample now supplies its own matching first segment and unwraps the suffix, exercising successful medium/long stripping.
No new actionable bugs found in this delta. Direction is sound: the fixes stay small, with Rust, JS, API output and draft limits aligned. Other reviewers' existing discussions are not resolved by this review.
Verification: static inspection of the eight-file delta and previously inspected framing/benchmark context; I did not run tests, builds, benchmarks or interop.
Path::new, Relative::new, join, and resolve return Result<_, path::TooLong>;
TryFrom replaces From for strings; from_static panics on an oversized literal.
Origin entry points take impl TryInto<Path, Error: Into<Error>>. With every
path bounded, the shared-buffer offset always fits u16, so the copy fallback
is gone.

P2 — fix the Path doctest (rs/moq-net/src/path/mod.rs:90): Path::from_static("/foo/bar/")? applies ? to Path, but from_static still returns Self, not Result. This example cannot compile and breaks the crate's doctest run. Remove that ? or use Path::new.
Direction: enforcing the size invariant at construction is a reasonable simplification of the shared-offset representation; fallible joins make the boundary explicit. My earlier forwarding-boundary and benchmark findings remain fixed. The independent raw-wire-length-before-normalization finding is still applicable: decode still normalizes before checking length; it is not a new finding here.
Verification: static inspection of the constructor/relative-path invariants, origin and protocol call-site migrations, tests and examples. No builds, doctests, runtime tests, benchmarks or interop were run.

Reject an output path that cannot reference the source.
If the source path is near 16 KiB and --output names a different subtree, both paths can pass the new constructors while source_path.relative(&output_path) returns None. The filter then leaves config.source unset. The derivative catalog silently omits the source renditions. Return an error when a non-empty source reference cannot be constructed, rather than treating that failure as an optional source. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Path.decode normalizes raw before check measures its UTF-8 length. A wire path such as "/".repeat(16_384) + "a" therefore becomes "a" and passes validation. overflows the limit under a deep root gets a REQUEST_ERROR instead of a dropped
stream. transcode fails when --output can't reference the source, and the Path
doctest no longer applies `?` to from_static.

Codex P2, doctest: fixed (? removed from from_static).
Raw wire length before normalization (Rust and JS): fixed. Both decoders measure the raw string first.
ietf SUBSCRIBE exits on absolute overflow: fixed with a per-request REQUEST_ERROR and a test that reproduces the old dropped stream.
transcode relative returning None: fixed. moq transcode now fails when --output can't reference the source, rather than silently dropping the source renditions. This also covers a target with a . or .. segment, which was silently dropped before.
just check and just ci pass, and the allocation bench is unchanged on every row.

Compared with cad1350: one substantive commit, unchanged base.
P2 — use the version-aware subscription refusal helper (rs/moq-net/src/ietf/publisher.rs:1364–1370): the new overflow branch constructs RequestError { request_id: None, ... } and sends it through request_stream::reject. This handler also serves draft-14–16 subscriptions through the control-stream adapter, but RequestError::encode_msg requires a request ID on those versions and panics on None. A valid short namespace under a near-limit scoped root therefore panics instead of receiving a refusal. Call self.reject_subscribe(stream, request_id, &err, reason) here: it already supplies the legacy ID and draft-14 message type. Extend the regression test beyond draft-22 to drafts 14–16.
Direction: the early raw-byte checks and explicit transcode reference failure are sound; reusing the existing refusal helper is simpler and preserves all negotiated wire versions. Verification was static review of the five-file delta and surrounding codecs/dispatch; no builds, doctests, runtime tests or interop were run.
… in every draft
An ietf SUBSCRIBE built its REQUEST_ERROR without a Request ID, which panics on
drafts 14-16, and a lite request joined the root while decoding, so an overflow
closed the session. Both now log the path beside the root and let the lookup
refuse the request alone.

After the first requeue, GitHub reported the PR as conflicting, though a local merge was clean. The cause is fix(net): verify the model without async #6851 moving ietf_conformance.rs, refresh.rs, and restart.rs into moq-net-tests, files this PR also edits; GitHub does not follow that rename. I committed the merge of main (fa801da).
Codex P1 (joined announce path): fixed in 0d9cd6c. The JS subscriber now rejects a prefix+suffix join over the path limit with ProtocolViolation, matching Rust. The new test fails without the fix.
Merged main again at 96fd152 and resolved a changelog conflict in draft-lcurley-moq-lite.md, keeping both moq-lite-07 bullets.
On 8d4c558: rs lint/test (9058 tests), js check/test, drafts, and just test interop --all passed. Codex 👍.
Keep both sides' MIGRATE entries, regenerate js/net's API report, and build main's new test paths with Path::from_static.

Merged main (through moq-dev/moq#6752) in e393c6c, using 6752's head as the merge base so its squash did not replay. Conflicts were the dynamic -> requests rename (#6752) and #6751's stats::Message/Totals/auth::Credential names meeting this PR's lifetime-free Path arguments; resolved by keeping this PR's Path forms under the new names (including RequestQueue<Path, _> in model/origin.rs and lite::Tracks in the fuzz dispatch from #6909). MIGRATE.md Unreleased sections keep every entry. The JS API report regenerated unchanged. just check (every lane but flake, which this sandbox cannot build) and just test interop --all pass. 8213385 then dropped two needless borrows clippy flags in the moq-stats bench.
Port the strict constructor onto the lifetime-free Path: one path::Invalid
error (TooLong, EmptySegment), head(n), and the strict fuzz invariant.

Bump the moq pin to moq-dev/moq@c764ace, past moq-dev/moq#6843, which drops
Path's and Relative's lifetimes. Path::new, strip_prefix, and Relative::new
now export, AsPath and the borrow methods are gone, and only

The exclude list follows the rest of the bump: moq-tokio's tokens moved to

Problem
moq_net::Path<'a>threads a lifetime through every API and wire message that carries a path, withPathOwned,AsPath, andto_owned/into_owned/borrowto move between the borrowed and owned forms. The API has to break before the next release cut anyway, and the lifetime costs more than it saves: owning a borrowed path allocates, and most paths are short.Approach
Pathis one owned 24-byte type (the same size as today) with three representations:Path::from_static("room")borrows a literal.Arc<str>plus au16start offset, sostrip_prefixand clones share one allocation, as owned paths do today. Every path is at most 16 KiB (below), so the offset always fits: aconstassertion tiesPath::MAX_BYTEStou16::MAX, and the one unchecked constructordebug_asserts the length. The only
unsafeis afrom_utf8_uncheckedon the inline bytes, with a SAFETY comment.Relativewraps aPathand loses its lifetime too.Maintainer decisions (2026-10-25), all applied:
Static, andShared { Arc<str>, start }.has_prefix,strip_prefix,join,relative, andresolvetake&Path.AsPathis deleted.Path::new(&str)copies, andPath::from_staticis free. Entry points takeimpl TryInto<Path, ...>per decision 5.AnnounceBroadcast,PathRef,AnnounceRequest,AnnounceInit, andTracks. In ietf, it isPublishNamespace,PublishNamespaceDone,SubscribeNamespace,SubscribeNamespaceLegacy,UnsubscribeNamespace,Namespace,NamespaceDone, andSubscribeTracks. The other lifetimes left on internal messages belong to theirCowtrack names and reason strings, not to paths.PathOwned,RelativeOwned,to_owned(),into_owned(), andborrow()on a path is renamed or removed across the workspace.http::Uri.Path::new,Relative::new,join, andresolvereturnResult<_, path::TooLong>.TryFrom<&str>,TryFrom<&String>, andTryFrom<String>replace theFromimpls.Path::from_staticpanics on an oversized literal. Origin entry points (publish,create_broadcast,request_broadcast,scope,mount,follow,routed, ...) takeimpl TryInto<Path, Error: Into<Error>>, so&str,String,Path, and&Pathall still work and a too-long string fails withError::BoundsExceeded. Theslice_fromcopy fallback is deleted.Deviations from the decisions:
start: u16, notu32(accepted; wire paths are capped at 16 KiB, below). On 64-bit both fit in 24 bytes. On wasm32,u32grewPathfrom main's 12 bytes to 16 and pushedtrack::Producerover clippy'sresult_large_errlimit. Withu16,Pathis 12 bytes there, the same as main.next_partis not re-added. moq-dev/moq#6744 removed it as unused.hipstrwas measured and rejected.HipStr<'static>matches on size (24 bytes, 23 inline), but its shared form boxes aVec. That makes a long path built from&strcost two allocations instead of one, and the table shows it losing on every long-path row. It also stores a tagged pointer with exposed provenance.Path length limit
moq had no byte limit on paths, only
Path::MAX_PARTS(32). Lite messages are framed at 64 KiB and the ietf namespace at 4096 bytes, but a liteAnnounceInit(64 MiB frame) or a lite-07 compressed join could still carry a longer path, which a relay then could not forward. This PR caps a path at 16 KiB (16,384 bytes;Path::MAX_BYTES), in both implementations and the draft. 64 KiB would fill the whole lite message limit, so no message carrying such a path could be encoded; 16 KiB leaves the other fields room, and a test round-trips a liteTracksmessage at the limit.Pathcan exceed it (decision 5), so encode needs no check. Decode fails withBoundsExceededon a wire string over the limit, measured before normalization so padding slashes can't carry a longer one.ProtocolViolationwhen a resolved join exceeds it.@moq/netPath.encode,Path.decode, and its lite-07 resolver apply the same limit in UTF-8 bytes (Path.MAX_BYTES), with decode also measuring the raw string.BoundsExceeded, and a mount never resolves or presents a name past it.
Path::new("...")calls becamePath::from_static, plus about 330 more literals that used to coerce throughFrom<&str>into animpl Into<Path>parameter.Path::new/Relative::newcalls on runtime strings handle the error:?where input comes from a user, config, or the wire,.ok()where the function already returnsOption, andunwrapin tests.absolute). The other 28 rebuild a path from a prefix and suffix split off one bounded path, so they call a crate-privaterejointhatexpects.impl TryInto<Path, ...>: the moq-net origin plus forwarders in moq-mux (follow::Instances::new), moq-rtc's client, and moq-room'sclaims.From<Infallible> for ErrormakesPathand&Pathsatisfy the bound.Things that turned out awkward:
origin::{Producer, Consumer}::absoluteandannounce::Consumer::absolutereturnResult, since joining the root can overflow.moq transcodenow fails when--outputcannot reference the source broadcast, rather than silently publishing a catalog without the source renditions.Path::try_resolvereturnsNonefor both "escapes the root" and "too long". Its callers already treatNoneas unresolvable, so splitting the cases had no consumer.impl Into<Path>(stats::Tier::new,session,request, the moq-rtmp, moq-srt, and moq-rtc server entry points,ts::Programs::new,catalog::Echo::new) no longer accept a&str. Callers passPath::from_staticorPath::new(s)?. Making themTryIntowould addTooLongto each crate's error type for no current caller that needs it.auth::Token::newandLease::newbecame fallible: a grant naming a root, mount, tier, or label over 16 KiB is refused asForbidden.--cluster-tieris validated once inCluster::new, so the LAN peer's self-minted grantexpects. Refusal metrics fall back to the default tier and root when the refusal's own label is too long. The test that asserted two short paths share one allocation now asserts that long paths share through clone and
strip_prefix, and that a short remainder moves inline. Short paths are inline by design, so they have nothing to share. New tests cover the inline boundary (including joins),from_staticborrowing and its panic, and every constructor at and just pastMAX_BYTES.The lite-07 announce decoder now joins a base's head as a
&str(Path::concat) instead of building an intermediatePath.joinsizes its buffer up front, becauseformat!reallocated.Allocations per operation
rs/moq-net/benches/path.rs(new) counts allocations through the global allocator, so the numbers are deterministic. The "main" column is the same bench onorigin/main, adapted only where main needsto_owned(). Short is 10 bytes, medium is 22, and long is 47. Announce rows are per message, and fan-out rows are per cursor per publish+retract.Path::newshort / medium / longclone,strip_prefix(all sizes)joinshort / medium / longrequest_broadcast(&str)local hit short / longrequest_broadcast(&Path)local hit short / longrequest_broadcast(&str)on a rooted consumer short / long&str) short / longNo row allocates more than main, and the fallible constructors changed no row (rerun on the pushed head). Times were not re-measured: the spike found no difference outside noise except faster clone, new, and join on short paths.
