refactor(ci): declare each check module once in the dispatcher - #7356
A module NAME PATTERN [tools=...] [compiles=...] [lane=NAME] [alone] [fix] call fills the scope, tools, compiles, lane, and alone tables the dispatcher already reads, and appends to the check and fix orders. Registration order is the lane start order (slowest first), so the separate modules=(...) lists are gone. Each table's comment moved onto the module it explains; the option meanings are documented once above module. The Bun lane, the shared C++ build lane (cpp and obs_compile), and dart running alone are kept. The scheduler, step, and the CI query output are unchanged.
Three scripts read the dispatcher's source, and all now follow the module form:
sh/js/workspace.py reads the js pattern from ^module js '...', and the workspace.test.py fixture uses the new form.
sh/rs/select.test.py reads the rs pattern through one dispatch_scope() helper instead of three copies of the regex.
sh/gh/test-inventory.py follows each module NAME registration to its just <module> check and fix recipes. It used to parse the modules=(...) lists. Without this change, just gh check fails: it reports the carla, dart, drafts, gh, and go recipes and their scripts as having no CI caller. A new test covers this path, and it fails against the old parser.
No public API or wire impact.
Merge with main (2026-11-01)
The land queue ejected this PR with merge_conflict. I merged origin/main at 88e6990626 and carried main's dispatcher changes onto the registrations:
the python (Ruff) module, between ts_paths and shell;
ktfmt on kt, clang-format on c and cpp, and the sh/clang-format.sh and cpp/obs/.clang-format scope on c and cpp;
main's fix set: go, kt, swift, c, cpp, and python now fix, and py and carla no longer do.
moq-dev/moq#7434 (Biome whole-repo lane) and moq-dev/moq#7501 (em-dash check:text) are still open, not on main, so they aren't in this merge. Whichever of them lands second has to register its module with module, not add a table entry.
Equivalence
I dumped every table (scope, tools, lane, alone, compiles[$verb], modules) from main's dispatcher and from this head for check, ci, and fix. They are identical, except for the fix order below.
Before the merge, 13 representative diffs gave the same ci --query, fix --query, ci-platform --query, and stubbed serial check output. The merge changes no code path those touch.
Choices made without asking
just fix order follows registration order. Main's order: js rs dart go kt swift c cpp obs python markdown shell toml nix justfile. This head's order: rs c cpp js kt swift go markdown obs python shell toml nix justfile dart. The set is the same. One registration order can't reproduce both the check order and a separate fix order. Fix runs one module at a time, and each fixer writes its own file types (clippy on Rust, Biome on JS, gofmt, ktfmt, swift-format, clang-format per package, the OBS fixer, Ruff, and the formatters). rs still runs before toml, so taplo still formats after cargo clippy --fix. The outcome doesn't change. Keeping a separate order would bring back a second ordered list, and removing that list is the point of this quest.
Options are key=value words after the pattern, not --flags. This keeps each registration short and matches how the parsers read the pattern.
alone is keyed by the module's lane. For dart, which has no shared lane, it is the same as before.
Checks
On head 07f1d457a6, on the host and in the Nix dev shell:
python3 sh/dispatch-query.test.py: pass. It covers serial (CHECK_JOBS=1) and concurrent lanes.
sh/changed.test.py, sh/js/workspace.test.py, sh/rs/select.test.py, sh/gh/test-inventory.test.py, and sh/gh/test-inventory.py: pass.
just gh check and just gh test: pass.
shellcheck and shfmt --diff on sh/dispatch.sh, ruff check, and ruff format --check on the changed Python: clean. quest check: ok.
Not run locally: the full just check. Changing sh/dispatch.sh selects every module, including the Rust, flake, and binding builds, and CI runs all of that on this PR.
Online reviews
CodeRabbit (review and review) and the earlier OpenAI review (review) found that sh/rs/select.test.py still read the old [rs]= form. Fixed: all three reads go through dispatch_scope(), as the OpenAI review suggested.
Pullfrog is failing because of a billing outage, not because of this change.
Follow-ups
quest/m2/nix-relay-module.md also edits the module map. After this lands, its change goes in the module rs and module flake registrations.
Dropped: the earlier CHECK_MODULES leak in workspace.test.py. It is already fixed on main, where sh/test_env.py's dispatch_env clears it.
Review
Reviewer: Codex (quest review), gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort.
Head: 07f1d45, round 1 of a new session on the merged branch. The merge reapplied main's dispatcher changes to the new structure and added the test-inventory fix, so it is not a mechanical merge and this head needed its own review.
sh/dispatch.sh registers every module with one `module` call that fills the
scope, tools, compiles, lane, and alone tables and the check and fix orders,
instead of listing it separately in each. Selection and check scheduling are
unchanged; `just fix` now runs its serial fixers in the registration order.

Declare each check module once in the dispatcher
refactor(ci): declare each check module once in the dispatcher
Oct 30, 2026
The dispatcher now uses a module registration function to store module scopes and configuration, including tool requirements, compile actions, lanes, isolation, and fix eligibility. It selects check or fix modules from the registered lists and maps ci to the check action. JavaScript and Rust consumers and tests now read module patterns from registration declarations. The related planning document and quest item were removed.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 5ce89
The Rust selection tests can fail because two readers still expect the old dispatcher declaration. Update those readers before merging.

Thanks for using CodeRabbit! It's free for OSS, and your support helps us grow. If you like it, consider giving us a shout-out.
No actionable regressions found. Centralizing each module's registration reduces parallel-table drift without replacing the scheduler. Static comparison preserves scope patterns, required tools, compile-action membership, check order, shared lanes, and Dart's isolation. The JS/Rust pattern readers and fixture match the new syntax. The disclosed fix-order change remains serial and retains shared-lane grouping; no concrete order-dependent failure was identified.
The disclosed CHECK_MODULES leak in the nested workspace-test dispatcher is an inherited limitation, not introduced by this refactor. Clearing inherited selection variables in that fixture remains a useful follow-up.
GitHub-only static review of all six changed files, the base dispatcher, and scheduling/query-test context. No scripts, tests, builds, CI jobs, or before/after execution comparisons were run; the author's reported equivalence and check results were not independently executed.

fixer result written
[P1] Update the newly merged scope reader — sh/rs/select.test.py:163.test_relay_nixos_module_selects_the_relay still searches for the old [rs]='...' table entry. This head declares module rs '...', so re.search(...) returns None and .group(1) raises AttributeError. The test is invoked by just gh test (.github/justfile:57), so the merged refactor breaks that gate. Use the same ^module rs '([^']*)' pattern already used at line 167, preferably through a shared reader so the two tests cannot drift.
This is a new base-integration regression since the prior review of b9fc5cb, which had no actionable findings. The registration refactor still reduces duplicated metadata; the relay scope, zizmor requirement and other dispatcher changes from base are preserved. No other actionable regression identified in the focused update review.
Verification: GitHub-only static comparison of the prior head, current head and base, including both scope readers and the test recipe. No tests, builds or scripts were executed.

Update the remaining Rust scope lookup.
Line 167 reads module rs, but Line 163 still searches for [rs]=. The old declaration no longer exists, so test_relay_nixos_module_selects_the_relay raises AttributeError at .group(1). This also fails just gh test, which runs this test file. Change Line 163 to read the new declaration. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

match the new `module rs` declaration in `sh/dispatch.sh` instead of searching

Resolve sh/dispatch.sh onto the module registrations: the python (Ruff)
module, ktfmt and clang-format tools for kt, c, and cpp, the c and cpp
clang-format scope, and main's fix set (go, kt, swift, c, cpp, python;
no longer py or carla). Every scope, tools, lane, alone, and compiles
table matches main's for check, ci, and fix; only the fix order follows
registration order, as before.
sh/js/workspace.py and the three rs-scope reads in sh/rs/select.test.py
take the `module NAME '...'` form in main's Ruff formatting.

…entory
sh/gh/test-inventory.py found the modules sh/dispatch.sh runs by parsing
its `modules=(...)` lists, which the registrations replaced. It then
reached no `just <module> check` or `fix` recipe, and `just gh check`
reported carla, dart, drafts, gh, and go recipes and their scripts as
having no CI caller. It now reads each `module NAME` registration; a new
test covers that path.
sh/rs/select.test.py reads the rs scope through one helper instead of
three copies of the regex.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
CodeRabbit and OpenAI: sh/rs/select.test.py still reads the old [rs]= form. Fixed in 07f1d45. All three reads now go through one dispatch_scope() helper, which reads ^module rs '...'.
Found while merging, same root cause:sh/gh/test-inventory.py parsed the removed modules=(...) lists, so just gh check reported the carla, dart, drafts, gh, and go recipes as having no CI caller. It now follows each module NAME registration. A new test covers this, and it fails against the old parser.
The P1 scope-reader regression from the previous review is fixed: sh/rs/select.test.py now shares dispatch_scope() across all three readers, matching module rs. This also addresses the equivalent CodeRabbit finding.
No new actionable bugs identified in the focused update review. The registration refactor remains a sensible reduction in duplicated dispatcher metadata; the base's formatter modules/tool requirements and fix membership are retained. Updating sh/gh/test-inventory.py:439 to recognize registrations, with a reachability regression test, is the right companion change.
Verification: GitHub-only static comparison against the last published review and current base, including the dispatcher, scope readers and inventory walker/test. No tests, builds or scripts were executed.
