Plans the follow-ups the maintainer picked on 2026-11-01, from the PRs in the second /quest-complete round.

Decisions (maintainer, 2026-11-01)

The maintainer picked these from grouped lists (✅ planned). Each one's source PR is linked in its quest.

  • m0, flakes and CI:
    • ✅ The moq-tokio quic_client_close_drains_finished_track flake, which ejected two land batches.
    • ✅ The @moq/net lite close-drain flake.
    • ✅ The @moq/net "version without a boundary syncs" flake.
    • ✅ New evidence added to relay-stack-all-features. Withdrawn: moq-dev/moq#7595 finishes and deletes that quest, so this PR no longer touches it.
    • ✅ One nextest pin.
  • m1:
    • ✅ A TS step back smaller than the delay.
    • ✅ The grace deadline isn't armed.
    • ✅ moq-boy's status loop spins hot on an errored track.
    • ✅ JS tests and docs that assume maxAge is retention.
    • ✅ Port session_fanout_threads to release.
  • m2:
    • ✅ Track-state version skips, and Watch for group reads.
    • ✅ TS idle jitter cost.
    • ✅ Route lock acquisitions.
    • ✅ moq auth sign cap flags.
    • ✅ QUIC-LB forward extras.
    • ✅ The audio-only play button.
    • ✅ The relay says why a track ended. Rescoped to its console half, quest/m2/browser-bench-consoles.md; see below.
    • ✅ LongType collapse.
    • ✅ The lite close-wait predicate fold.
  • Dropped by the maintainer:

Not planned because they're already covered

  • MKV truncated finish: quest/m1/mkv-truncated-finish.md is on main.
  • The io_uring test group: quest/m0/ci/io-uring-test-group.md is on main.
  • The #drift timeline walk: quest/m2/perf/hot-path-waste.md.
  • moq-auth's Transport::Iroh: quest/m2/auth-drop-iroh.md, in moq-dev/moq#7468.
  • The publish-ui version-list tests: fixed by moq-dev/moq#7060.

Pending edits

These were picked too. Their target files were being rewritten by queued PRs, so they waited for those PRs to land.

Choices made without the maintainer (review round, 2026-11-01)

These follow the online reviewers' findings. Each one is answered on its thread.

  • relay-end-reason → browser-bench-consoles: moq-dev/moq#7396 already sends PUBLISH_DONE MALFORMED_TRACK for a relay's malformed-track abort. PUBLISH_DONE says why a subscription ended owns the remaining codes. Only the other half of the follow-up is still unowned, so the quest is now "The browser bench keeps its page consoles" (bench/browser captures pageerror but no console).
  • relay-stack-all-features: the evidence cited moq-dev/moq#7363, which never mentions an overflow. fix(relay): keep the resolved configuration off the stack #7595 reproduces the overflow and deletes the quest, so this PR's edit to the quest is reverted.
  • subscriber-fin-fold: on main the predicates still differed for lite-05/06 until moq-dev/moq#7296, so the quest required quest/m1/lite-legacy-close-drain.md. fix(net): lite-05/06 close waits for the subscriber's FIN; drop the legacy close quest #7296 has since landed; see the second merge below.
  • quic-lb-forward-extras: it now requires quest/m2/relay-quic-lb-forward.md (moq-dev/moq#7539 is still open). Its Plan defines the peer-map entry (server ID plus forward socket address), the new optional cluster.api.url peer fields, and which component owns each counter and what increments it.
  • nextest-pin: CodeRabbit's "the Dockerfile is unpinned" was against a stale branch. On main, .oss-scanner/Dockerfile pins ARG NEXTEST_VERSION=0.9.146. The Goal now names that build arg.

Choices made without the maintainer (merge with main, 2026-11-02)

Merging origin/main (96244dd854) needed no manual conflict fixes. I checked every planned quest against main again, and each still names unfinished work. Changes:

  • quic-lb-forward-extras: moq-dev/moq#7539 landed and deleted quest/m2/relay-quic-lb-forward.md, so the quest's Required section is removed.
  • New Required links to still-open quest PRs whose code these quests extend:
    • ts-small-step-back requires quest/m1/ts-reliability/step-back.md (moq-dev/moq#7221 adds Track::steps_back).
    • quic-long-type requires quest/m1/quic-zero-rtt-leftovers.md (moq-dev/moq#7492): LongType::ZeroRtt is still on main.
    • ts-idle-jitter requires quest/m2/perf/export-idle-poll.md (moq-dev/moq#7504 adds the export idle bench it measures with).
  • release-fanout-bench: moq-dev/moq#7493 has landed, so "start after perf(moq-net): fanout subscribers stop contending the shared track lock #7493 lands" now says it landed. release still lacks session_fanout_threads.
  • Checked and kept unchanged: grace-deadline (Copy::retains still passes the grace to may_land with no waiter); audio-only-play (center-play's unsupported is the catalog-version status, not codec support); moq-boy-status-loop (#runStatus still continues on any error); browser-bench-consoles (bench/browser/driver.ts captures only pageerror); auth-sign-caps (moq auth sign has no rate flags).

Choices made without the maintainer (second merge with main, 2026-11-02)

Merging origin/main (5e327b55f8) needed no manual conflict fixes; quest resolved the link lists. I checked every planned quest against main again. Changes:

m0: three load flakes (moq-tokio close-drain, @moq/net close-drain and
boundary-sync), one nextest pin, and new evidence on the relay stack quest.
m1: TS step back under the delay, the grace deadline, moq-boy's status loop,
JS cache-window assumptions, and the release fanout bench port. m2: track
state version skips, TS idle jitter, route lock, auth sign caps, QUIC-LB
forward extras, audio-only play button, relay end reason, LongType, and the
lite close-wait predicate.

No actionable bugs found in this quest-only change. The direction is sound: separate root-cause flake fixes from performance work, preserve manual-clock validation, and prefer removing redundant reads/predicates over adding new machinery. The version-skip plan appropriately calls out clock/floor changes that cannot be inferred from the track version alone.

Verification: static review of the plans, milestone context, and selected referenced source. No tests, quest validation, or benchmarks were run; reported failure frequencies and performance measurements were not independently reproduced.

ℹ️ Two quest-plan concerns worth a look; nothing blocking.

Reviewed changes

  • m0 flakes and CI: adds ci/nextest-pin.md and test-flakes-2/{tokio-close-drain,js-close-drain,js-boundary-sync}.md, and an evidence bullet to test-flakes-2/relay-stack-all-features.md, plus their index bullets.
  • m1: adds ts-small-step-back.md, grace-deadline.md, moq-boy-status-loop.md, js-cache-window.md, release-fanout-bench.md, plus index bullets.
  • m2: adds auth-sign-caps.md, quic-lb-forward-extras.md, audio-only-play.md, relay-end-reason.md, quic-long-type.md, subscriber-fin-fold.md, plus index bullets.
  • m2/perf: adds cursor-version-skip.md, ts-idle-jitter.md, route-lock.md, plus index bullets.

Verified: every in-repo link target resolves, each index bullet mirrors its quest's # [size] Title, and the cited source PRs support the claims made (including subscriber-fin-fold's premise that waits_for_subscriber_fin equals has_track_stream once #7296 lands).

- relay-end-reason becomes browser-bench-consoles: #7396 fixed
the malformed-track end code and publish-done-codes owns the rest.
- relay-stack-all-features: drop the added evidence; #7595
finishes and deletes the quest, and the #7363 citation was wrong.
- nextest-pin: name the Dockerfile's NEXTEST_VERSION arg.
- quic-lb-forward-extras: define the peer-map fields and counter owner,
  and require relay-quic-lb-forward.
- subscriber-fin-fold: the predicates differ on lite-05/06 until
  #7296 lands; require its quest.

Reviewed commit: 6663097a91c30cf8f4d32995ca0411b9bcb77de4, comparing the substantive plan updates with my prior review at 8e94ada3fbaaeabf5f6c4fe7e521c4bd86729372 and excluding merged base changes.

No new actionable bugs found. The direction is simpler: retain only browser-console collection rather than duplicate the existing end-code quest, and require the legacy-close work before folding predicates that currently differ. The independent duplicate-scope finding and predicate-equivalence finding are addressed by the revised plans. The added QUIC-LB peer-map and counter contract leaves implementation choices open without losing the intended behavior. The Dockerfile pin now matches the description after merging main.

Verification: static inspection of the revised plans, referenced prerequisite plans, current Rust/JS version predicates, cluster peer fields, and Dockerfile. No tests, quest validation, or benchmarks run; implementation and runtime behavior remain unverified.

Reviewed changes

Incremental review of the delta since the prior pullfrog review (8e94ada3fb), covering the merge of origin/main and the "address review" commit 6663097a91.

  • m0/ci/nextest-pin.md Goal reworded — now names the three pinned sites inline: platform.yml's Windows/macOS tool: nextest@0.9.146 and the .oss-scanner/Dockerfile NEXTEST_VERSION build arg.
  • m0/test-flakes-2/relay-stack-all-features.md evidence reverted — the #7363 overflow citation is removed, so this file is again unchanged by the PR (#7595 reproduces the overflow and deletes the quest).
  • m2/relay-end-reason.md replaced by m2/browser-bench-consoles.md — the follow-up is rescoped to capturing page consoles in the baseline harness, with the already-owned end-code half pointing at quest/m2/publish-done-codes.md.
  • m2/quic-lb-forward-extras.md Plan expanded — adds the peer-map entry, the cluster.api.url optional fields, and the forwarded/unknown/refused counter ownership, plus a Required link to the QUIC-LB forwarding quest.
  • m2/subscriber-fin-fold.md premise corrected — records that has_track_stream and waits_for_subscriber_fin still diverge on lite-05/06, and adds a Required link to the legacy close-drain quest.

Both prior pullfrog findings are resolved. Verified the reworked claims against the tree: the nextest pins, the PeerObject fields (cluster.rs:148-160), the lite version boundaries (lite/version.rs:64,229), and #7135's suggested follow-ups all match; the two new Required link targets exist on origin/main with matching titles, and no references to the deleted relay-end-reason remain.

#7539 landed, so quic-lb-forward-extras drops its Required on the deleted
relay-quic-lb-forward quest. Follow-ups that extend still-open quest PRs
now require them: ts-small-step-back (#7221), quic-long-type (#7492), and
ts-idle-jitter (#7504). release-fanout-bench notes #7493 landed.

Apply the pending edits whose PRs have landed: lite-07 ranges drops its
fetch-range Required (#7545 landed the miss judging and cached backfill)
and records #7207's range-identity question; quic-lock-contention records
#7531's recommendation to keep the Mutex and RefCell.

Reviewed commit: f48a8f3324d2a9d863277e74b13c90f8f033b096, against the last reviewed head 6663097a91c30cf8f4d32995ca0411b9bcb77de4, excluding merged main changes.

No new actionable bugs found in the revised plans. The added prerequisites keep follow-ups behind the code and benchmarks they extend. Recording the range-start identity question while retaining stateless full-list updates is preferable to adopting the larger delta-encoding prototype by default. The QUIC plan appropriately distinguishes the measured recommendation to keep the lock from the still-pending contended-workload decision. Earlier findings remain addressed; this update introduces no runtime API or wire changes.

Verification: static inspection of the changed plans, referenced prerequisite and source PRs, current range messages, miss judging, and QUIC packet types. No tests, quest validation, or benchmarks run; performance measurements were not independently reproduced.

Incremental review of the delta since the prior pullfrog review (6663097a91): the merge of origin/main (96244dd854) and the "align the 2026-11-01 follow-ups with main" commit f48a8f3324.

  • release-fanout-bench.md notes #7493 landed — the "start after #7493 lands" prerequisite now says #7493 has landed on main.
  • subscribe-ranges/lite.md unblocked — records that #7545 landed the miss judging and cached backfill, drops the Required on fetch-range.md, adds #7207's range-identity question, and cites TrackState::miss_grace.
  • ts-small-step-back.md gains a Required — links quest/m1/ts-reliability/step-back.md (#7221's Track::steps_back).
  • quic-lock-contention.md records #7531's verdict — keep the Mutex/RefCell, since the channel costs 5 to 29% more.
  • ts-idle-jitter.md gains a Required — links quest/m2/perf/export-idle-poll.md (#7504's export idle bench).
  • quic-lb-forward-extras.md drops its Required — #7539 landed the forwarding and deleted relay-quic-lb-forward.md.
  • quic-long-type.md gains a Required — notes LongType still has ZeroRtt until #7492 lands and links quest/m1/quic-zero-rtt-leftovers.md.

Verified the new claims against the tree: LongType::ZeroRtt is still present (rs/moq-quic/src/packet.rs:815-819), TrackState::miss_grace exists (rs/moq-net/src/model/track/miss.rs:988), and moq_tokio::quic::driver::forward exists (rs/moq-tokio/src/quic/driver/forward.rs). Every in-repo link target resolves, and each removed target matches a file that is gone (mbx-arg-max, relay-auth-trust, relay-stack-all-features, relay-end-reason, relay-quic-lb-forward). quest/just are not installed here, so the PR body's quest check result was not re-run.

Incremental review of the delta since the prior pullfrog review (f48a8f3324): the merge of origin/main (5e327b55f8) and the alignment commit 49c4523a2.

  • m2/subscriber-fin-fold.md realigned after #7296 — both waits_for_subscriber_fin and waitsForSubscriberFin now delegate to has_track_stream / hasTrackStream on every version, so the Plan folds the alias instead of depending on the deleted legacy close-drain quest, and the ## Required link is dropped.
  • m0/test-flakes-2/js-close-drain.md notes #7296 — the close-drain cases were reworked, so the flake is first reproduced against current main.
  • Merge of origin/main — brings the new main quest set in without manual conflicts; base noise only.

Verified the reworked claims against the tree: both predicates delegate to the shared boundary in Rust (rs/moq-net/src/lite/version.rs:231) and JS (js/net/src/lite/version.ts:376); the Required target quest/m1/lite-legacy-close-drain.md is gone with no remaining references anywhere; the cited js close-drain test still exists (js/net/src/lite/connection.test.ts:360), and every in-repo /quest/...md link in the PR's touched files resolves. quest/just are not installed here, so the PR body's quest check result was not re-run.

Both prior pullfrog threads are resolved and no new issues were found.
