refactor(moq-mux): parse H.264 SPS with h264-reader and config bits with bitstream-io - #7398
h264-parser and the hand-written SPS VUI/HRD walker duplicate parsing already available in h264-reader; codec config readers also duplicate MSB-first bit reading.
Approach
Parse H.264 SPS/VUI/HRD through h264-reader, and share its RBSP reader with H.265 parameter-set and TS timing parsing.
Use bitstream-io for AAC, VP9, TS Opus layout, and moq-audio's SBR scan. Remove h264-parser from the workspace.
Keep uncapped SEI message framing and hand-written HDR payload decoding; validate recovery-point fields with RecoveryPoint::read.
Delete the completed quest and remove its prerequisites from the AAC and SPS-fuzz follow-ups. Merge main 4a82a6a5f7 cleanly to resolve the stale conflict state.
Impact
Public API: unchanged.
Wire: unchanged. Existing catalog fixtures retain their output.
Base SPS validation is stricter, including the declared level's MaxFS constraint; malformed VUI still degrades to base SPS fields as recorded below.
Alternatives
Keep the old parser and duplicate VUI walker, or expose new moq-mux APIs to consolidate moq-video colour conversion and moq-audio's SBR scan. The migration reuses existing dependencies and keeps those package boundaries.
Choices made without asking
Graceful degradation is kept. h264-reader refuses a whole SPS when its VUI is truncated or breaks a constraint. h264-parser plus the old walker kept the base fields and dropped the VUI. read_sps keeps that behaviour: it retries through a WithoutVuiBitRead wrapper that reports vui_parameters_present_flag as 0, so the codec string and coded size survive. The avc3 fixture used by moq-mux, TS import, and moq-rtc tests is exactly this case (sps_with_a_short_vui_keeps_the_fields_before_it). The wrapper matches h264-reader's field name, and that test pins it.
Trailing zero bytes are trimmed before RBSP decoding of parameter sets and SEI. These NAL units end in rbsp_trailing_bits, and h264-reader would otherwise refuse Annex B trailing_zero_8bits as an emulated start code (sps_ignores_trailing_zero_bytes).
Stricter than before, accepted: the base SPS fields (before the VUI) now go through h264-reader's validation, including the level MaxFS check, so an SPS whose frame size exceeds its declared level is refused where h264-parser accepted it. moq-video and TS timing already applied this same parse to the same streams.
moq-video's decode/vui.rs is left alone. It already reads the SPS through h264-reader and maps to moq-video's own Color with a size-based default. Sharing moq-mux's conversion would need a new public moq-mux API.
moq-audio's declares_sbr stays in moq-audio, now on bitstream-io. Having it call moq-mux's AAC parser would mean exposing the sync extension on the public aac::Config. Its left() < 16 guard is gone: a short read already reads as "no".
Follow-ups
Existing AAC SBR config quest owns exposing the sync extension from moq-mux and removing moq-audio's scan.
Existing SPS fuzzer quest owns rerunning fuzz coverage on the replacement parser.
Existing H.264 intra-refresh quest owns sharing recovery detection with avc1 and carrying recovery counts, after its recovery-boundary decision. No new follow-up or maintainer choice arose in this iteration.
Checks
On 67b359e992, quest gate just check origin/main: exit 0, 11,329 Rust tests passed (127 skipped), Rust lint/docs, workflow checks/tests, Markdown, quest, and other selected checks passed. This includes short-VUI preservation, trailing-zero SPS, malformed/empty recovery points, and recovery after a payload over 1 MiB.
Strict quest gate just ci origin/main: exit 1. The flake runner-image build cannot write /proc/self/uid_map on this host. Standard just check probes and skips that unavailable flake build. flake.nix, flake.lock, nix/, .github/, and sh/ are identical to main.
The first attempts also hit the known mbx Cargo shim E2BIG failure, tracked by moq-dev/moq#7594. The passing local run used this dev shell's Nix Cargo directly with the harness BASH_ENV unset for the check process, preventing child shells from restoring the shim. No repository workaround added.
Review
Current head: 67b359e992. No new round: it is solely a conflict-free base merge into the reviewed 6dbaad144e, an explicit quest guide review exemption. The reviewed parser/SEI/HDR code is byte-identical. Existing review sessions and their checkpoint counts are preserved.
The earlier avc1 recovery finding is declined: IDR-only classification is unchanged on main and this branch, and the existing intra-refresh quest explicitly owns the extension after its pending recovery-boundary decision.
Reviewer: Codex, gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort (quest review --base origin/main), new session round 1 on 6dbaad1: no findings. That head merges main d8288e6 into 1f88b90. The merge resolved one prose conflict in quest/m2/audit-deps.md's "Hand-rolled code" paragraph: main had finished relay metrics and this PR had finished H.264 parsing, so the paragraph's "Planned:" list is gone and both items now read as done.
CodeRabbit's outside-diff finding on 1f88b90 (Do not apply WithoutVui to every SPS parse error, review) is refuted in this comment. Main's walker (origin/main:rs/moq-mux/src/codec/h264/mod.rs:256-265) did no VUI range checks and kept the base SPS whenever the VUI failed. Refusing the SPS would lose the codec string, which is the recorded "Graceful degradation is kept" choice.
Earlier rounds: Codex round 1 on 208f269 had no findings. Then came the land fixer's mechanical base merge 238e7fb and quest land's base merge 1f88b90. Codex gpt-6.1-sol medium round 1 on 6eb1c46 found that a recovery point after an SEI payload over 1 MiB was lost to SeiReader's cap (split.rs:284), fixed in 65ceff2; round 2 on 65ceff2 had no findings. An online review (thread) on 65ceff2 found that an empty or truncated type-6 SEI still marked random access, fixed in d932a2b; a new session round 1 on d932a2b had no findings.
…bits with bitstream-io
Drop h264-parser: the SPS, its VUI and HRD come from h264-reader's parse
instead of a hand-written walker, the SEI recovery point from its SeiReader,
and the H.265 SPS fallback, parameter-set ids, and TS HEVC timing read RBSP
through its reader. VP9, AAC, the TS Opus channel layout, and moq-audio's
AudioSpecificConfig scan read through bitstream-io.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
h264-reader's SeiReader refuses a payload over 1 MiB and ends the scan, so
share the HDR scanner's sei_message framing instead.

Parse H.264 and codec config bits with maintained crates
refactor(moq-mux): parse H.264 SPS with h264-reader and config bits with bitstream-io
Oct 30, 2026
P2: The new SEI recovery-point check accepts a type-6 message without validating its payload, allowing malformed input to mark a dependent frame as a keyframe (inline).
The shared parser/bit-reader direction is sensible, and retaining uncapped SEI framing addresses the previously reported large-payload case. Keep that framing while validating recovery-point contents. No other actionable issue found in the changed code and relevant callers.
Verification: GitHub-only static inspection with an independent review pass. Builds, tests and media decoding were not run; reported author checks were not independently verified.
Codec configuration readers now use bitstream-io. H.264 and HEVC parsing use h264-reader and shared Annex-B helpers for RBSP conversion and SEI processing. H.264 SPS parsing retries with VUI parsing disabled when full parsing fails. The changes also update recovery-point parsing, fixtures, tests, dependencies, and quest documentation.
Merge Risk: Low · up to 1f88b
Some reachable H.264 inputs can lose SPS-derived video metadata; correct the fallback before or shortly after merging.

… SEI
The recovery-point check accepted any SEI message of payload type 6, so
an empty or truncated one flagged the next non-IDR slice as a keyframe.
Each type-6 payload now has to parse through h264-reader's
RecoveryPoint::read; trailing extension data is still accepted.
The shared test fixtures carried bytes that only h264-parser's byte-wise
reader took as a recovery point. They now hold a spec-valid payload.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Addressed the one open review thread (discussion). A recovery point now counts only when its type-6 payload parses through h264-reader's RecoveryPoint::read, so an empty or truncated SEI no longer flags the next non-IDR slice as a keyframe. Payload extension data after the fields is still accepted.
Rewrote the shared recovery-point fixtures (split.rs, import.rs, moq-rtsp/src/fake.rs) to a spec-valid payload. The old bytes only parsed under h264-parser's byte-wise reader.
Local Codex review (quest review, gpt-6.1-sol medium) on d932a2b found nothing. cargo test and clippy -D warnings pass for moq-mux and moq-rtsp, and quest check --base origin/main passes.
moq-dev/moq#7401 overlaps codec/h264/mod.rs and some quest files and is still queued. quest land orders the two, and whichever lands second gets re-dispatched on conflict.

Automated review by review (OpenAI)
Reviewed commit d932a2b, focusing on the single-commit update since 65ceff2.
The prior malformed recovery-point finding is addressed: type-6 payloads now parse their required fields before marking random access, with regression coverage for empty/truncated payloads and a malformed message preceding a valid one. The fixture corrections are consistent with the new parser.
No new actionable bugs found in this update. Keeping uncapped SEI framing while delegating payload validation to h264-reader is a focused, sensible fix without unnecessary new machinery.
Verification: GitHub-only static inspection of the delta and relevant surrounding code; builds, tests and media decoding were not run.

Do not apply WithoutVui to every SPS parse error.
read_sps retries every SeqParameterSet::from_bits failure with WithoutVui. h264-reader 0.9.0 can reject a complete VUI because a restriction value such as max_bytes_per_pic_denom > 16 violates its range checks. The retry then accepts the SPS with vui_parameters_present_flag forced to false.
The result drops frame timing, sample aspect, color, HRD, and max_num_reorder_frames metadata. H.264 configuration callers can therefore publish incomplete VideoConfig values, and TS/MKV export can omit SPS-derived timing and reordering information. Restrict the retry to failures caused by truncated VUI data. Do not convert non-truncated VUI validation failures into SPS values with silently discarded metadata.

Update read_sps to retry with WithoutVui only when the initial
SeqParameterSet::from_bits failure is caused by truncated VUI data. Preserve
rejection of other parse or VUI validation failures instead of returning an SPS

Re the CodeRabbit finding Do not apply WithoutVui to every SPS parse error (rs/moq-mux/src/codec/h264/mod.rs:193-200, review): declining. The retry is intentional and is recorded under "Graceful degradation is kept" in the PR body.
The retry only changes the outcome for a failure inside the VUI. A failure in the base fields fails the WithoutVui pass the same way, so read_sps still returns None for those.
Refusing an SPS whose VUI breaks one of h264-reader's range checks (e.g. max_bytes_per_pic_denom > 16) is stricter than main. Main's hand-written walker (origin/main:rs/moq-mux/src/codec/h264/mod.rs:256-265, :400) did no range checks, and it returned the base SPS whenever the VUI failed. Refusing the SPS would also drop the codec string and coded size, so the track wouldn't play at all. Dropping only the VUI fields costs timing, colour, and reorder hints, and every consumer already treats those as optional.
Telling truncation apart from validation would mean matching on h264-reader's SpsError variants. Both cases would still get the same fallback, since neither has a VUI worth keeping.
The avc1 recovery-point finding describes existing behavior, unchanged by this parser migration: avc1_is_keyframe in rs/moq-mux/src/codec/h264/mod.rs:54-60 still detects IDR slices only, just as on main. This PR changes only the SEI fixture in import.rs.
The existing H.264 intra-refresh import quest explicitly owns sharing recovery detection with avc1 and carrying the recovery count. Its recovery-boundary prerequisite must settle precision and publication ordering first. Adding recovery boundaries here would bypass that recorded decision and expand the migration's scope. Declining this finding for this PR; the existing quest remains accurate.
main's #7468 added a parse-amplification measurement to quest/m2/media-fuzz.md,
which this branch deletes. The measurement found three fMP4 cases that need
fixing, so the quest now keeps that remaining work with the numbers instead
of being deleted, and its m2 and import-metadata-policy links stay.
- .config/hakari.toml: exclude moq-mux-fuzz and moq-rtmp-fuzz from the
workspace-hack (#6985), like moq-net-fuzz and moq-quic-fuzz.
- sps-overflow.md: H.264 now parses with h264-reader (#7398).
- mp4-atom-bump.md: its prose wait moves into a ## Waiting section.

Problem
h264-parserand the hand-written SPS VUI/HRD walker duplicate parsing already available inh264-reader; codec config readers also duplicate MSB-first bit reading.Approach
h264-reader, and share its RBSP reader with H.265 parameter-set and TS timing parsing.bitstream-iofor AAC, VP9, TS Opus layout, and moq-audio's SBR scan. Removeh264-parserfrom the workspace.RecoveryPoint::read.Impact
Alternatives
Keep the old parser and duplicate VUI walker, or expose new moq-mux APIs to consolidate moq-video colour conversion and moq-audio's SBR scan. The migration reuses existing dependencies and keeps those package boundaries.
Choices made without asking
read_spskeeps that behaviour: it retries through aWithoutVuiBitReadwrapper that reportsvui_parameters_present_flagas 0, so the codec string and coded size survive. The avc3 fixture used by moq-mux, TS import, and moq-rtc tests is exactly this case (sps_with_a_short_vui_keeps_the_fields_before_it). The wrapper matches h264-reader's field name, and that test pins it.rbsp_trailing_bits, and h264-reader would otherwise refuse Annex Btrailing_zero_8bitsas an emulated start code (sps_ignores_trailing_zero_bytes).MaxFScheck, so an SPS whose frame size exceeds its declared level is refused where h264-parser accepted it. moq-video and TS timing already applied this same parse to the same streams.decode/vui.rsis left alone. It already reads the SPS through h264-reader and maps to moq-video's ownColorwith a size-based default. Sharing moq-mux's conversion would need a new public moq-mux API.declares_sbrstays in moq-audio, now on bitstream-io. Having it call moq-mux's AAC parser would mean exposing the sync extension on the publicaac::Config. Itsleft() < 16guard is gone: a short read already reads as "no".Follow-ups

Current head: 67b359e992. No new round: it is solely a conflict-free base merge into the reviewed 6dbaad144e, an explicit
quest guidereview exemption.
Reviewer: Codex, gpt-6.1-sol, medium effort (
quest review --base origin/main), new session round 1 on 6dbaad1: no findings. That head merges main d8288e6 into 1f88b90. The merge resolved one prose conflict inquest/m2/audit-deps.md's "Hand-rolled code" paragraph: main had finished relay metrics and this PR had finished H.264 parsing, so the paragraph's "Planned:" list is gone and both items now read as done.CodeRabbit's outside-diff finding on 1f88b90 (Do not apply
WithoutVuito every SPS parse error, review) is refuted in this comment. Main's walker (origin/main:rs/moq-mux/src/codec/h264/mod.rs:256-265) did no VUI range checks and kept the base SPS whenever the VUI failed. Refusing the SPS would lose the codec string, which is the recorded "Graceful degradation is kept" choice.Earlier rounds: Codex round 1 on 208f269 had no findings. Then came the land fixer's mechanical base merge 238e7fb and
quest land's base merge 1f88b90. Codex gpt-6.1-sol medium round 1 on 6eb1c46 found that a recovery point after an SEI payload over 1 MiB was lost toSeiReader's cap (split.rs:284), fixed in 65ceff2; round 2 on 65ceff2 had no findings. An online review (thread) on 65ceff2 found that an empty or truncated type-6 SEI still marked random access, fixed in d932a2b; a new session round 1 on d932a2b had no findings.(Written by GPT-6.1 Sol)
